WelcomeIt’s my great pleasure to share with you details of the University of Edinburgh’s 2019/20 Short Courses programme.

In this brochure you’ll find a range of courses designed to spark your imagination, inspire your creativity and perhaps challenge you to do something a little different.

Maybe you’ve always wanted to discover Shakespeare or explore the world of graphic novels and comic book art? Perhaps you’d enjoy immersing yourself in learning a language or taking a field trip with us to learn the skills needed to identify garden birds?

Whether you want to try something new over a few hours or study in more depth over a number of weeks, we hope this year’s programme offers something for you. Our courses are taught by talented and supportive teachers in a friendly and relaxed environment.

You’ll see that some of our courses are offered for credit. This means they include a formal assessment at the end of the course. Credit courses are open to all, not just those on a path to formal qualification, however if you want to take the course but not the assessment that’s also fine – you just need to let us know you’re opting out.

Those studying for credit may be interested in working towards a Certificate of Higher Education. The certificate, offered by us here at the Centre for Open Learning, is an accessible national qualification, recognised by employers and other universities.

Everyone is welcome here and as in previous years, we can offer help with the fees. So please get in touch if you would like to take advantage of this support. You’ll find more information about fees as well as studying for credit on pages 68 & 69 of this brochure.

Finally, a reminder that the Centre for Open Learning offers a year-round programme of free student and staff exhibitions and events, including our popular Open Lecture Series which is a great opportunity to hear from experts from across the University on a wonderfully diverse range of topics. You can find out more about this by visiting www.ed.ac.uk/short-courses and clicking on ‘Events’.

We hope you enjoy exploring the range of courses we have planned for 2019/20 and look forward to welcoming you soon.

Languages for AllDid you know that learning a new language can help keep your brain healthy?

Research has shown that the merits of studying languages can lead to heightened concentration and conversation abilities as well as higher levels of cognitive development including creativity, reasoning and problem solving skills.

But these are just some of the many benefits of language learning…

The practical side of learning another language is the ease in which you can communicate with people from around the world – whether that’s at home or away. Being able to travel or welcome visitors without barriers can lead to more fulfilling interactions and experiences.

Immersion in other languages also enables a deeper understanding of other cultures and opens up a whole new world of books, film, art and music.

And of course, language learning, in small groups, with hands-on communicative activities, is fun!

At the Centre for Open Learning we have the largest selection of language courses in Edinburgh. These are offered from Beginners level and many continue through to advanced levels.

So whether you’ve always dreamed of learning a language, want to refresh your skills or become a more confident speaker, there really is something for everyone!
