Before you register for first-year classes take time to plan what your first year will

look like using our Academic Calendar. Make sure you give yourself time to figure out

which courses you need to take and what electives you’d like.

The Academic Calendar contains course descriptions, program and

graduation requirements, as well as Saint Mary’s University regulations and policies.

Make sure to check out the recommended first year courses for your program. The

list is available on page 3 of this brochure.

VOCABULARY YOU SHOULD KNOW

Term is the timeframe during which courses are offered. Not all courses are offered each term.

Fall Term: September to DecemberWinter Term: January to AprilSpring Term: May to JuneSummer Term: July to August

Credit hours represent the number of classroom hours per week in a term that a course is taught. Students must complete a certain number of credit hours to graduate from a degree program. Most courses are valued at 3 credit hours (1 term) or 6 credit hours (2 terms).

Academic Advisors are faculty representatives who can assist you with course slection and developing a successful academic plan. Advisors also help you understand the University’s rules and regulations.

Self-Service Banner is a site that allows students to look up and register for courses, access course and exam schedules, and view their academic transcript. Students can access Self Service Banner on the Saint Mary’s homepage, smu.ca.

Your first-year classes will provide a solid foundation to your degree program.

You can follow this easy step-by-step guide to register for your first-year classes.

Register early to make sure you get the optimal schedule.

THINGS TO CONSIDER• Don’t put all classes on a two-day cycle. Spread them out over the week so you

have time between classes to prepare for the next one. It also helps come exam time,

as you won’t have multiple exams on one day.

• Courses ending in XX and YY are full-year courses. XX indicates the fall term and

YY the winter term. You must register for both parts at the same time. Check out the

registration process for instructions on changing terms.

• Refer to the Academic Claendar for course description and pre-requisites.

Check your course requirements (see page 3).

Select your courses. Go to smu.ca/ar-choose-your-courses for detailed

instructions.

Register for courses by using Self-Service Banner. Visit smu.ca/selfservice

and select Enter Secure Area.

Enter your User ID (example: A12345678).

Enter your PIN (first-time users will default to date of birth in DDMMYY format).

Go to the Student Tab and click on Registration.

Go to Look up Classes and select the term you wish to register for. To register for

September, select September-December 2019. To register for winter courses, go

back to the Registration tab, Select Term and change to January-April 2020.

Once you’ve registered for your courses, go to Week at a Glance to see your

schedule.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

When you register for classes you hold a

seat in each course. Courses have a financial

and academic component and the University

has set withdrawal deadlines and payment

due dates. We do not require a confirmation

deposit; however, it is extremely important

you finalize your registration and commitment

to Saint Mary’s University before these

deadlines to avoid financial or academic

penalties. Check out smu.ca/registration

for more information.
