PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
Knowledge and competence in your field of research are the foundations for a successful doctorate. Equally important, not only for your academic development, but also in other professional contexts, are a range of key competencies, such as communicating adequately in different settings, organizing yourself and your work, and mastering IT. The fact that only one out of ten doctoral researchers are able to continue their career in academia highlights the need for a varied, and well-developed, professional skill set.
Our Professional Development Program takes this into account and helps you to prepare for different career paths.
Academic Performance courses provide guidance on the way to your doctorate and help you to successfully navigate academic life. On the basis of the principles of research integrity, the workshops in this section are designed to develop your reading, writing and teaching skills and to support you in presenting and publishing your research as well as in defending your dissertation.

Management Competency courses give you the opportunity to acquire and improve additional skills that complement your academic performance and help you in your future career. You will find workshops focusing on a range of IT tools, support for motivating and organizing yourself, as well as strategies for improving your networking skills.
Each career requires individual planning. Our Career Development program offers courses that support you along the way, from exploring options and choosing career paths to applying for jobs. You also get a chance to gain new perspectives, for instance by getting acquainted with the basics of economics.
TRAINING – COACHING – MENTORING
Within the Professional Development Program you can choose between different educational formats that cater to your individual needs and career goals.
Training sessions make up the largest part of our program. In their interactive workshops our experienced trainers instruct you in various fields and techniques, such as self-presentation, academic publishing, teaching at university level, or time management.
Coaching in small groups helps develop personal awareness and power. Here you can reflect on your existing skills and knowledge and find the best ways to enhance your performance. Our qualified coaches not only guide you in learning, practicing, and evaluating strategies for your doctoral degree; they also help you to determine your professional potential and to devise a suitable career strategy.
Our mentoring program supports female doctoral candidates in exploring and pursuing their career options by pairing them with experienced professionals who offer guidance, encouragement and support. Mentors and mentees meet regularly throughout a one-year program during which they participate in specially designed workshops, coachings and networking events.

Date Thu. 07 June 2018, 09:00 - 17:00
Venue Dahlem Research School, Hittorfstraße 16
Objectives The complex and multifaceted character of academic work presents a particular challenge. Intricate research projects are spread out over an extended period, often with few external deadlines, and project structures are made even more complicated by the expanding and shifting nature of research questions. It’s easy to feel like you’re standing at the base of a mountain piled high with unread articles, tangents to explore, and pages to write, with more questions than answers in your head, unable to see the peak of the mountain through the clouds. In situations like these, project management tools can be a valuable resource. They help you to reduce complexity and divide overwhelming tasks into small, easy-to-manage steps. In this workshop you’ll learn the basics of project management and apply project management tools to your own doctoral or research projects.
Content • Defining concrete project goals, examining and understanding motivation, and developing successful strategies for defining project scope
• Managing project tasks and phases, creating work breakdown structures, and defining work packages
• Effectively using timetables, milestones, and processes to steer projects successfully
• Analyzing project risks and preparing risk management plans• Monitoring progress and identifying (potential) delays far in advance of
the deadline• Effectively applying project management tools to participants’ projects in
the framework of the workshop
Methods The workshop will be presented in an interactive and engaging style with ample opportunity for participant questions and involvement. Methods used include interactive group activities, small group collaboration, coaching pairs, and input.

Objectives For most people, job hunting can be a daunting and demoralizing task. This is especially true if you are not sure what career you want to pursue. Many people job hunt with a CV and covering letters, but CVs and covering letters don’t tell you where to apply. Content The workshop will teach you how to:• Discover and realistically assess your marketable skills• Reliably determine the company / sector / next step that is right for you• Access the hidden job market of unadvertised positions• Actively manage the progress of your search (rather than send your CV
and hope for a positive response)• Give yourself the edge over others who use the more traditional methods
of CV and covering letter• Become the “preferred candidate” or even have positions created
specifically for you.• Gather the information needed to aid the job hunt and salary negotiations• Job hunt in a way that is interesting and not demoralizing
Methods The agenda is flexible and set by the attendees. The workshop willbe very interactive. Expect to be asked lots of questions, expect tobe challenged, expect to participate!

DRS PRO BUSINESS UND DRS PRO TRANSFER — VON DER WISSENSCHAFT IN DIE WIRTSCHAFTTraining for the Job

Objectives The complex and multifaceted nature of many tasks – from scientific research to publishing projects, assignments at work, or even personal transitions – can present us with a challenge. It’s easy to feel like you’re standing at the base of a mountain, unable to see the peak for the clouds, with more questions than answers in your head. Where should I begin? What do I need to do?
In situations like these, project management tools can be a valuable resource. They help you to reduce complexity and divide overwhelming tasks into small, easy-to-manage steps. In this workshop you’ll learn the basics of project management and apply project management tools to your own doctoral or research projects. Our goal for this workshop is to plan a personal project or part of a project (depending on the scope) per participant.
Content • Using project management tools for your own projects• Defining project goals• Creating work breakdown structures and defining work packages• Planning milestones, procedures, and timetables • Planning resources• Analyzing project risks• Monitoring progress

Objectives Peer mentoring is a powerful tool for you to stay motivated and to work continuously throughout the different stages of your doctorate. During the 4 sessions led by an experienced trainer, you will meet regularly with 4-6 doctoral candidates (= peers). In every session, you will report on your progress and then ask your team for feedback or input (ideas, methods, advice). Based on the input of your team and your current situation, you will then set a new goal to achieve until the next session. The trainer will provide you with different listening and questioning techniques to help you get the maximum of support out of your team. After the 4 sessions, the team can continue to conduct peer mentoring sessions among themselves, without the supervision of an external trainer.
Content The workshop will cover the following topics:• How to structure and conduct sessions of peer mentoring based on the
success team concept• What peer mentoring offers? The importance of asking the right questions
in effective peer mentoring• Support others: How to listen and ask helpful questions - basic
questioning and listening techniques• Variation in the process: Different methods for group consultation• Working with diversity: group organisation and dynamics• Possibilities and limitations of group mentoring

BLEIBEN ODER RAUS AUS DER WISSENSCHAFT? HOCHSCHULKARRIERE UND ALTERNATIVE WEGECareer

Datum Mo., 28. Mai 2018, 09:00 - 17:00
Ort Dahlem Research School, Hittorfstr. 16

In this case, the number of course days that you are entitled to will not be reduced. If you have paid the course fee yourself, the fee will be refunded.
Cancellations due to illness of you or your child are accepted only with a valid medical certificate, which must be sent by mail or email within one week after the end of the course. In cases of documented illness you or your doctoral program will not be charged.
Our Professional Development Program consists of high-quality courses taught by expert trainers and coaches. To cover their fees, the Dahlem Research School asks for a contribution of € 100 per participant and course day. DRS doctoral programs of Freie Universität Berlin often cover this contribution for their doctoral candidates and postdocs.

The number of courses you can book free of charge may be limited by your doctoral program. If you want to exceed the designated number of course days, you may ask your program coordinator if there is additional funding available. If there is no funding available, you have to pay the course fee yourself. In this case, we can only accept your registration if we receive full payment before the start of the course via bank transfer. You will be first put on the waiting list and asked to transfer the course fee. You will receive the confirmation for participation after we have received your payment. There is no limit to the number of courses you may register for.
Doctoral candidates and postdocs who are not funded by a DRS program have to pay the course fee themselves.
We suggest that you ask your department, your supervisor or the gender equality officer of your department if there is funding available for your course participation.
To receive a confirmation of participation, you must attend and ac-tively participate in at least 80 % of the course sessions. You can download your confirmation of participation on the DRS Course Booking Platform two weeks after the course has taken place.
Dahlem Research School offers and administers its interdisciplinary course program but does not itself award credit for the courses. Each doctoral program has its own rules for awarding ECTS credits for courses taken at the DRS. Individual training records are made available by the DRS to program coordinators at the end of each semester. After you have completed your doctoral studies, your program coordinator will issue a transcript of your records, including all courses taken as part of the curriculum of your doctoral program. As a rule, one course day (7-8 hours) corresponds to 0.5 ECTS.
Participants’ data is stored for the purpose of recording attendance, providing statistical information and maintaining records. Individual training records are made available to the institution funding your participation in DRS courses. This may be your doctoral program or, in some cases, your department / Fachbereich.Non-personal data is used for quality management and control.
