September 14, 2016 | Wednesday, 5.30 p.m. - 8.30 p.m.

Dr. Ryan Schure D.D.S.M.SC. (PERIO.), R.C.D. (C)

He continues to maintain strong affiliation to the University of Toronto as a lecturer and part-time clinical instructor in Periodontology, where he contributes to the clinical and didactic training of graduate and undergraduate students.

Course Outline:

With an aging population, loss of cervical tooth structure is now a routine finding during clinical examinations. This loss of tooth structure is often multi-factorial, and all potential etiologies of the wear must be considered before tackling the restorative process. The treatment of these lesions is compounded when the cervical lesion is accompanied by gingival recession. This lecture presents an interdisciplinary approach to treatment of cervical tooth defects where treatment is based on the severity of the tooth surface defect, the extent of root exposure present, and the classification of the gingival recession.

Course Objectives:- 1. Understand the etiologic factors behind carious and non-carious cervical lesions. 2. Review when non-carious cervical lesions should be treated. 3. Discuss the restorative and surgical treatment options available. 4. Develop a decision-making process to aid in treatment planning for non-carious cervical lesions.

"A Periodontal-Restorative Team approach To the Treatment of Cervical Lesions" Speaker: Dr. Ryan Schure

Dr. Ryan Schure earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Toronto. He went on to complete his Master of Science degree with advanced training in Periodontology and implant surgery at the University of Toronto. His research on the relationships between cardiovascular disease and periodontal disease has been published and presented at international meetings. Dr. Schure has participated in many continuing education courses and is one of the few Periodontists in Canada certified in the placement of Ceraroot ceramic dental implants. Dr. Schure is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. He is an active member of the Ontario Dental Association, Canadian Dental Association, Ontario Society of Periodontists, American Academy of Periodontology, and Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity.

“Applied Ethics in the Dental Practice- RCDSO” Speaker: Dr. Barry Schwartz

Barry Schwartz

DDS and MHSc

He was awarded the Fellowship in Teaching Innovation Research Award at the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Schwartz has been recognized as a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and a Fellow of the American College of Dentists for his contributions in dental ethics.

Course Outline:

Interactions between dental patients, dental staff and the dentist can often create complicated ethical and professional challenges for the dentist. Discussions in this seminar will examine several cases which highlight ethical conflicts and help integrate the RCDSO Codes and guidelines as well as other relevant workplace legislation into dental practice situations. How should a dentist deal with major value differences that impact on treatment? What should dentists say when questioned about unsuccessful recent dental treatment by other dentists? How does one deal with sexual issues with staff and patients? Issues such as child neglect, domestic violence and insurance co-payment can often confound many dentists when they try to do the right thing. By following a patient-centered perspective and careful analysis of the factors that may impact on the profession and the community, dentists should be better prepared to deal with a wider variety of professionally challenging issues. In this session, we will examine some cases and have an interactive discussion about the professional implications involved.

Barry Schwartz is Assistant Professor at Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, London Ontario and is Course Director for Practice Administration where the focus is on critical thinking, interpersonal-communications and applied ethics. He received his DDS and MHSc in Bioethics from the University of Toronto. Dr. Schwartz was in clinical practice for 25 years. He conducts ongoing research projects at Western and has published many articles both nationally and internationally on the subject of dental ethics. Dr. Schwartz has been a presenter at the ODA ASM as well as the keynote speaker at Manitoba Dental Convention, The College of Dental Surgeons in Saskatchewan, and the First Nations Dental Therapist Conference in Edmonton. He has presented papers on his research both nationally and internationally at dental conferences.
