Getting You Back to Practice: Panel Discussion with Members of the ODA

Return-to-Practice Working Group

RCDSO QA Program Category 2, 2 CE Credits

Speakers: David Stevenson, DDS — Chair, ODA Return-to-Practice Working Group (RTPWG) and ODA Past President Janet Leith, BSc, DMD — Chair, ODA Health Policy and Government Relations Advisory Committee Deborah Saunders, BSc, DMD, FICD, FACD, FPFA, FADI, FIAOO — Medical Director, Dental Oncology, Health Sciences North (Sudbury)

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed our world. Ontario’s dentists need guidance on how we can safely return to practice and sustain our ability to meet the needs of our patients. We all have questions about the future and what our new normal will look like. The ODA Return-to-Practice Working Group (RTPWG) was formed to help answer those questions. Our objective has been to develop viable solutions and to deliver to members concrete information, protocols and other resources based on the best evidence available. This panel session, led by the RTPWG Chair Dr. David Stevenson, will outline the processes by which information is gathered, evidence is considered, decisions are made to provide clarity and guidance to dentists.

Learning Objectives:• Learn how the evidence and expertise gathered so far — and infection prevention and control precautions currently

recommended for dental offices — will shape the “new normal” for dentistry for the next few months, and beyond.• Learn what we have heard from ODA members and how the group is working for you during COVID-19.• Find out how to help staff get comfortable returning to work and patients feel safe coming back into the dental chair

The Return-to-Practice Working Group represents the diverse perspectives of Ontario’s dentists across regions, years of experience and types of practice. The RTPWG includes or consults with external subject matter experts, general practitioners, dental specialists, public health, researchers, and epidemiologists to get a complete picture of what’s out there and what’s needed to get dentists back to providing safe, sustainable access to care.

Classification and Diagnosis of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions: Putting The New Classification

System Into Practice

RCDSO QA Program Category 2, 2 CE CreditsSpeakers: Siavash Hassanpour, HBSc, MSc, DDS, MSc(Perio), FRCD(C) Ryan Schure, DDS, MSc (Perio), FRCDC

A classification scheme for periodontal and peri-implant diseases is necessary for clinicians to properly diagnose and treat patients as well as for researchers to investigate etiology, pathogenesis, natural history, and treatment of the diseases and conditions. The previous (1999) classification system has been widely utilized for the past twenty years, but since this was developed, substantial new information has emerged about these conditions and diseases. The analysis of this evidence has prompted the development of a new classification framework for periodontitis. This 90 minute lecture-based course will review the proceedings of the World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-implant Diseases and Conditions from 2017, where the former classification was revised and expanded.

Dr. Siavash Hassanpour graduated from the University of Toronto in 2008 with a degree in cellular and molecular biology (HBSc). In 2010, Dr. Hassanpour entered the Doctor of Dental Surgery program at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto. In 2017, Dr. Hassanpour received his degree in periodontics (MSc Perio) from the University of Toronto. He is a part-time clinical instructor at the University of Toronto’s Graduate Periodontology Clinic.

Dr. Ryan Schure earned his doctor of dental surgery degree from the University of Toronto in 2010. He completed his master of science degree with advanced training in periodontology and implant surgery at the University of Toronto. His research on the relationships between cardiovascular diseases and periodontal diseases has been published and presented at international meetings. Dr. Schure is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.
