Graduation RequirementsIn order to receive a Leavenworth High School diploma, a student must attend 7 semesters in grades 9-12 in an accredited junior and/or senior high, of which the final semester must be at Leavenworth High School. Summer school attendance will not be counted as a semester of attendance.

Entering senior students must earn at least three credits from LHS.

All students must be enrolled as full time students during their period of attendance at LHS. Freshman and sophomore students must be enrolled in 8 credits. Junior and senior students may be enrolled in a non-credit teacher helper per semester if their cumulative GPA is 2.8 or higher.

Dual-enrollment/AP Course Information

LEAVENWORTH HIGH SCHOOL DUAL-ENROLLMENT/Advanced Placement© COURSE INFORMATION MAKING A DECISION

Deciding whether to take advantage of dual-enrollment opportunities, Advanced Placement (AP©) testing, or both can be a challenging decision for students and parents. The LHS Dual-Enrollment/Advanced Placement table outlines which LHS courses are offered for dual-enrollment, which are AP©, and which are both.

Definitions:

Dual-enrollment - Dual-enrollment means that a student is dual enrolled in high school and a college/university. To receive college credit through dual-enrollment, a student must pay tuition to the university for the course, generally each semester. Students must be sophomore, junior or senior status or a freshman student with a gifted IEP.

Advanced Placement (AP©) - AP© courses offer students (grades 9-12) an opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while in high school with the potential to achieve college credit or qualify for more advanced classes when they begin college. To achieve college credit for an AP© course, students must earn a passing score (score range 1-5) on an AP© exam scheduled each May. Each college/university has its own credit policy for AP© courses.

The following considerations are important in formulating a sound decision:

•Check with the admissions department of the college/university you plan to attend to see if dual-enrollment credits will transfer, as well as how AP© exam scores are handled (how each university handles AP© credit can be examined at www.collegeboard.com/ap/creditpolicy).

•The college major you plan to pursue may affect your decision as well. Check the requirements of your college major.

•There is always value in taking challenging courses even if students/parents decide not to invest in dual-credit options or Advanced Placement testing. Assuming you do well in the course, your admissions/scholarship applications are always strengthened by taking AP© and dual-enrollment courses even if you are not paying to earn credit through one program or the other.

DUAL-ENROLLMENT INFORMATION

•To enroll in dual-enrollment courses, students must first complete the online application process at apply.kckcc.edu. Successful completion of this step will generate a student ID number to be used for the enrollment procedure.

•Students who do not already have a qualifying ACT score (23 or above in the reading, English, and math) must take the AccuPlacer test to meet the course placement score requirements. Student may take the AccuPlacer test at LHS or at the Pioneer Career Center, 2001 Spruce St., Leavenworth. Students will need their KCKCC student ID number to take the AccuPlacer test.

•Students and parents must complete the KCKCC High School Concurrent/Dual Enrollment Form. These forms are available online at kckcc.edu/ad-mission/concurrent-dual-enrollment, from the student’s counselor and/or may be obtained from their specific dual-enrollment teacher.

•Completed first-semester KCKCC dual-enrollment forms are to be turned into the dual-enrollment teacher or to the LHS Guidance Office by Friday, August 31. The deadline for second-semester forms will be announced at a later date.

•Fees for dual-enrollment courses are $87 per credit hour. Contact KCKCC for billing deadlines and questions.•Fees for courses can be paid online through KCKCC’s Webadvisor portal at wa.kckcc.edu. Fees may also be paid at Pioneer Career Center, or mailed

directly to KCKCC (payment by check only).•Dual-enrollment forms will be processed by your guidance counselor.•Additional information for the dual enrollment program is available at: http://www.kckcc.edu/admission/concurrent-dual-enrollment •You may also contact your guidance counselor or the course teacher if further information is needed. •In addition to dual-enrollment courses offered at Leavenworth High School, students may pursue dual credit options through other post secondary in-

stitutions. They must obtain approval from their counselor and the building principal (paperwork is available in the guidance office) to enroll in a course or program. A three credit hour college class equals 0.5 high school credits. A five credit hour college class equals 1 high school credit.

REGISTERING TO TAKE AP© EXAMS

•Because of significant changes by CollegeBoard for the 2020-21 school year, sign-ups for AP© exams will begin shortly after the start of school, with a deadline of November 2, 2020. Exam fees for the upcoming school year are currently unavailable; however, the fee for each exam in 2019-20 was $94.00. As long as funds are available, there is no fee for students receiving free/reduced lunch. Exam orders and fees are due to the LHS Book-keeping Office.

•Students with disabilities may be eligible for accommodations on AP© exams. If you are a student with a documented disability through an IEP or Section 504 Plan, see your school counselor early in the school year to complete necessary paperwork. January 2021 is the final submission deadline for accommodation requests. This process takes time, so speak to your student’s counselor well in advance of this deadline.

•Students receive a score of 1-5 on the exam. Colleges and universities handle credit and placement policies differently for AP© exams. Students/par-ents should visit www.collegeboard.com/ap/creditpolicy to review the credit and placement policies of nearly 1,000 colleges and universities.

•Get additional information concerning the AP© Program, exams, exam schedules, etc. at http://www.collegeboard.com/apstudents. Students can also get information from their AP© teacher or Mrs. Shepard, LHS AP© Coordinator.

Policies/Course Offerings by Grade Level

Graduation Procedure for International/Foreign Exchange Students•International/Foreign Exchange students can

graduate Leavenworth High School if they provide a transcript translated in English their previous school or a government agency.

•They meet all Leavenworth High School grad-uation requirements.

Accredited/Non-Accredited Private School PolicyAccredited Private Schools•Students who have attended a private school

that is accredited by the Kansas State Depart-ment of Education or another state department will receive credit and grades will be granted as listed on their transcript.

Non-Accredited Private Schools/Home Schools•Students who have attended a Non-Accredit-

ed Private School or Home School may earn credit through the following process:

•Students’ transcripts and documentation will be reviewed by the building principal and de-partment representatives. Credit will be grant-ed and grades issued based on their review and recommendation.

Make-up/Replacement Credits•Make-up/Replacement credits may be earned

through the Credit Recovery program accord-ing to the following guidelines:1. Students must have prior approval their LHS counselor.2. Students cannot earn credit through this institution for required coursework unless they have already failed the course and there is not room in their schedule to retake the course at LHS, or if the student needs more than 7 credits which is the amount typically earned in a school year.3. Students cannot earn credit to replace a requirement that they are currently enrolled in and failing until the semester is completed. 4. Exceptions to these guidelines can be made with approval of the building principal.5. Make-up/replacement credit work must be completed by the conclusion of each respective semester or an "F" will be earned for any incomplete course.

Dual-Enrollment via Post-Secondary Institutions•Students may earn dual credit through post-

secondary institutions if: 1. They are sophomore, junior or senior status or a freshman with a gifted IEP. 2. They obtain approval of their counselor and the building principal (paperwork is available in the guidance office). 3. A three-hour college class equals one high school credit. A five-hour college class equals two high school credits. 4. A student may elect to take one college block in their schedule per three-hour col- lege class; two blocks per five-hour class. 5. Students are responsible for submitting their college grade to their counselor as soon as possible (not to exceed two weeks) or an “F” will be posted on their transcript.

Transcript Translation Procedures•Leavenworth High School translates tran-

scripts according to the following guidelines: 1. Leavenworth High School has a weighted grading system for all Advanced Placement courses.2. (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) coursework on the following basis: A (5.0), B (4.0), C (3.0), D (1.0), F (0.0). All other classes, including Pre-AP, Pre-IB, and Honors classes are based on a 4-3-2-1 system. Rank in class is figured on a cumulative GPA for all classes. GPA is computed by the total number of units attempted. 3. If a sending school posts transcripts using letter grades, those grades are honored regardless of the sending school’s grading scale. 4. If a numeric grading system is used and the grading scale is printed on the transcript the sending school, this scale is honored and letter grades are issued according to the sending school’s scale. 5. If the grading scale is not indicated on the transcript, Leavenworth High School contacts the sending school to obtain the grading scale and issues letter grades according to the sending school’s scale.

Class Drop Procedure•Should a student decide to request a change

in the student’s course selection for this year, it must meet one of the following criteria:1. The need for the school to balance class size.2. Errors made by the school in developing the schedule. 3. Medical reason with documentation.4. Placement by the school for students with academic difficulties.5. Request to take courses in order to qualify for the Kansas Scholars/Board of Regents.6. Request to add a course required for post-secondary admissions (wiith docu mentation required from the college).7. Adding a required course in lieu of an elec tive class.8. Administrator approval of student enroll ment in a higher-level course.9. Failure of a course required for graduation.

10. Failure of a prerequisite, i.e., anything that would prevent a student from going on to a requisite course as published in the Course Guide (e.g., failing Honors Algebra II prevents a student from enroll ing in PreCalculus).11. Second-semester senior schedules may change as a result of qualifying for short ened day.If your request meets one of these criteria, you may submit a Schedule Change Request form (available in the Guidance Office). All chang-es are subject to administrator approval. The deadline to submit the form to the Guidance Office is by the end of of the first full week of each semester.

Kansas Scholars Curriculum & State Scholar Quick FactsKANSAS BOARD OF REGENTS

Completion of the Kansas Scholars Curriculum is one of the requirements Kansas residents must meet in order to receive State Scholar designation. This occurs during the senior year of high school.

What are the other requirements to become a State Scholar?

• Students must have taken the ACT between April of the sophomore year and December of the senior year.• Students must be a Kansas resident.• Students must have their curriculum and 7th semester GPA certified on the official roster by the high school counselor, registrar, or similar official.

English - 4 years One unit to be taken each year. Must include substantial recurrent practice in writing extensive and structured papers, extensive reading of significant literature, and significant experience in speaking and listening.

Mathematics - 4 years Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and one unit of advanced mathematics-- suggested courses include: Analytic Geometry, Trigonometry, Advanced Algebra, Probability and Statistics, Functions or Calculus. Completion of Algebra I in 8th grade is acceptable for the Kansas Scholars Curriculum, but not for Qualified Admissions.

Science - 3 years One year each in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, each of which include an average of one laboratory period a week. Applied/technical courses may not substitute for a unit of natural science credit.

Social Studies - 3 yearsOne unit of U.S. History; minimum of one-half unit of U.S. Government and minimum of one-half unit selected from: World History, World Geography or International Relations; and one unit selected from: Psychology, Economics, U.S. Government, U.S. History, Current Social Issues, Sociology, Anthropology, and Race and Ethnic Group Relations. Half unit courses may be combined to make this a whole unit.

Foreign Language - 2 yearsTwo years of one language. Latin and Sign Language are accepted.

What is the benefit of completing the Kansas Scholars Curriculum?

Students that complete this curriculum and meet the other requirements, may be designated as State Scholars, which makes one eligible to receive the Kansas State Scholarship as provided by the Kansas Legislature. The academic profile of recent scholars include an average ACT of 30 and an average GPA of 3.91. State Scholars may receive up to $1,000 annually for up to four undergraduate years (five, if enrolled in a designated five-year program), based on financial need and the availability of State funds. Financial need is measured by federal methodology using data submitted on the FAFSA.

Five of the six state universities in Kansas, including Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, Kansas State University, Pittsburg State University, and Wichita State University, use the standards below to review applicants for undergraduate admission. The University of Kansas has different admission standards from those listed below, visit admissions.ku.edu for more information. Standards are set by the Kansas Board of Regents.

ACCREDITED HIGH SCHOOL If you are a Kansas resident who will graduate from an accredited high school during the 2015-2016 academic year or later, you can guarantee admission to five of the state’s universities by completing the Qualified Admissions or Kansas Scholars curriculum with a 2.0 GPA and by meeting one of the following requirements:

- ACT score of at least 21; OR - SAT score of at least 980; OR - Graduate in the top 1/3rd of your class.

If you enroll in college courses while you are in high school, it is also required that you achieve a 2.0 GPA or higher in those courses.

QUALIFIED ADMISSIONS PRECOLLEGE CURRICULUM Kansas Course Codes are used to identify courses that fulfill Qualified Admissions curriculum requirements. A complete list of courses is available at the Kansas Board of Regents website: kansasregents.org/qualified_admissions. Additionally, your high school counselor has a list of courses at your high school that fulfill these requirements.

Technical Certificate Programs

Construction Technology

Students will prepare for careers in carpentry, plumbing, electrical,

and mason work. Apprentice opportunities with various skilled

craft unions.

Criminal Justice & Cybersecurity

These programs give an

insight into possible jobs like U.S. customs, immigrations, Private Investigation. They also cover topics on how to keep networks secure and respond to data breaches.

Culinary Arts

Students will master the

fundamental skills of food service in hotels, restaurants,

hospitals, catering, etc. Opportunities to receive

practical experience in food service preparation for public

meetings and banquets.

Heating & Refrigeration (HVAC)

Training is comprised of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and

refrigeration. Silver brazing, electrical and mechanical troubleshooting are also

practiced. Program approved for EPA 608 refrigeration certification.

Electrical Technology

Students will develop basic electrical skills, technical knowledge and related occupational information to prepare for entry-level employment in the electrical trade.

This is a one-semester course which prepares a high school senior, or a student after high school, to become a Certified Nursing Assistant who provides direct patient care.

Subject JROTC 11OTC is open to all physically fit students 14 years or older. The purpose of the program is to motivate young people to be better citizens. 11OTC is an Army supported activity. Students do not incur any obligations to serve in the military. The ROTC cadet is required to participate in physical fitness training, drill, ceremonies and academic training. ROTC cadets are invited to participate on special teams such as: honor guards (drill teams), rifle team, drum and bugle corps, raiders, color guards, cadet chorus, saber team, and the junior guard program.
