Congratulations Winners & Participants!

Congratulations to everyone who entered the fce contests at the

Wilson County Fair this year. We had 122 entries in Cultural Arts and

15 entries in the Fashion Revue. Several members entered items for

the first time. If you did not get to attend the fair and see the displays,

you missed a wonderful sight! Two clubs had 100% participation in

Cultural Arts: Carroll and Mt. Juliet. Congratulations to both clubs!

This year the judges selected a counted cross stitch as “Best of Show”

in cultural arts. Judges of the Fashion Revue selected a Retro

Design-100% Cotton top and crop lined pant for “Best of Show”.

Alaskan Adventures Suzanne Bell, Former Wilson County fce Member

The beginning of another school year is here and what a whirlwind it has been! After two years with the same kids, I have my first set of new students here in Gambell. I stayed in 2nd grade and have 10 amazing students. I miss my old class but they are right next-door and I get to see them all of the time. My new class loves to read and they are pretty good in math!

We have eight new teachers this year and it has been fun watching them have their new experiences. They think they have seen cold and wind…HA! I am looking forward to watching them go through their first real winter here. We have a very social staff that loves to get to-gether for games and movies. We have already had a game night and this Saturday we are having pizza and movies. Pizza in Gambell, you ask. We get Papa Murphy’s pizza delivered from Anchorage! It takes some planning, but it is a fun treat.

The sun is finally setting before midnight, but it is hard to get to sleep most nights because it is light out so late. Winter will be here before we know it. Till then, berries need to be picked, fish have to be caught, and seals have to be hunted. The ice will bring in the walrus!

Well I hope everyone is rested up from the fair. Thank you for all the entries in the fair and

cultural arts. I hope to see you at the picnic on September 22, at the Fiddlers Grove Pavilion from 4-6 p.m. Bring a covered dish, the meat and drink will be

furnished.

We are now looking forward to our Craft Day, Oct. 4 and

Bazaar Nov. 5. I hope you or your club will have a booth at

the Bazaar. Have a great Fall.

Club Notes Tuckers Crossroads fce Club:

Tuckers Crossroads donated several

flats of flowers to the Lebanon First Church of the Nazarene, for

their youth group yard sale. We were able to help send 9 children

and 3 adults to church camp this year. We are proud to say we

have sponsored a child in the Books from Birth program. We are

still working on the Sun Bonnet Sue quilt, for the Cedar Seniors

Center. Many members are collecting and preparing to make

things for the upcoming Fall Bazaar. Hope to see everyone at the

Craft Day, October 4th, in the East/West Building, Fun! Fun! Fun!

Green Cleaning Tip from Penny West Tuckers Crossroads fce Club member, Penny West has found a great method for cleaning her microwave. This fall, you’ll have tons of reasons to use your clean microwave! There’s several microwave recipes to make that will pair well with football season!

For a super clean microwave:

1. Mix equal parts water and vinegar.

2. Cook in a large glass bowl on high power in the mi-crowave for 5 minutes.

3. Wipe microwave clean with a cotton dish towel!

Apple Crisp

Makes 8 servings

Total Cost: $2.32

Serving Cost: $0.29

Ingredients

4 apples (medium)

1/4 cup oatmeal (quick)

1/4 cup flour

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 tablespoon cinnamon

1/4 cup margarine

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 350

degrees

2. Grease the bottom and

sides of the square pan.

3. Remove the cores from the

apples. Slice the apples.

4. Spread the sliced applies

on the bottom of the pan.

5. Cut the margarine into

small pieces and put in a

medium-sized bowl.

6. Add the oatmeal, flour,

brown sugar and cinna-

mon.

7. Using two knives, cut the

margarine into the mixture

until it looks like small

crumbs.

8. Sprinkle the mixture over

the top of the apples.

9. Bake for 20 minutes.

News from the “Field” Ruth Correll, Ag Extension Agent & County Director

Hello fce Friends:

"It is only the farmer who faithfully plants seeds in the Spring, who reaps a

harvest in Autumn" B. C. Forbes. These are definitely words of wisdom in

many facets of our lives. I have also heard “we reap what we sow” and if we

don’t sow, we cannot reap. We see corn that has matured in the field and is

waiting to be harvested. Soybeans are beginning to lose their leaves as they

stand in the field waiting for harvest.

The leaves on the trees already have a fall appearance even though there

has been no change of color. I have noticed there is an abundance of acorns

and persimmons this year. I have heard folks say this indicates this will be a

cold winter. I have not seen any wooly worms yet and did not count the num-

ber of fogs in August but colder weather is just around the corner for sure

Fall is such a beautiful time of the year with the changing of colors. The

bright colored mums, the beautiful leaves, the pumpkins and fall squash and

the bright red apples on the trees. Fall is beautiful but is a time of transition as

plants go from thriving, flowering and bearing fruit to a time of dormancy.

Fall is also a time to give thanks for our many blessings of the year. We have

had plenty of rain this summer and abundant hay crops. Our corn and soy-

bean producers may have record harvests from the things I am hearing. I am

thankful we enjoy one of the best and safest food supplies in the world. I am

thankful for every farmer who provides our food and fiber.

I am thankful I have a great job and work with so many of you and the citi-

zens of Wilson County. I wish you a great fall and I hope you have the oppor-

tunity to enjoy its beauty and its bounty.
