Like many in the post World War II era, Charles Martin found work in the booming industrial scene in Ohio. He retired from Armco Steel after 30 years, and had no real plans to return to his native Kentucky. Then mutual friends, and his Kentucky family, introduced him to Yvonne Otis, who had been widowed six years when they met.

Yvonne said with a grin, “He started driving to Kentucky every weekend.” They were married in 1986 and have divided their time between Stanton and Florida, where Charles has a daughter, Deborah, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He also had a son, Charles Lewis, who died in 2005. Yvonne has two sons, Greg and Bentley, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Charles has owned Martin Roofing Supply for 58 years and continues to be busy. He also had Middletown Termite Control for about 8 years before coming back to Kentucky. He has been a member of the Lions Club for 30 years, the Masonic Lodge 54 years, and was Master in 1972. Both he and Yvonne are members of the Stanton Presbyterian Church. Yvonne is a past member of the Stanton Woman’s Club.

Both have been active in their community and with the Lions Club, particularly during Fair Week at the popular hamburger booth.

Congratulation Charles and Yvonne, and thank you for your service to your community.

FOOD PRESERVATION *When selecting canned products to be entered in the

Fair, check these points:Jars should be standard canning jars of glass and

correct size.Jars and lids should be clean – no rusty bands. (A

vinegar solution can be used to wipe off the jar and remove the lime deposit.)Liquid should cover the product and be free from

sediment. Air bubbles should be worked out.Jars should be filled to within ½ inch of the top. Do not

select jars that are packed too heavy.A dull, grayish tinge indicates an old product for canned

fruits.Canned fruit should not float, not me mushy and there

should be no darkening of fruit at the top of the jar. There should be a good proportion of berries and juice.Vegetables should be covered with liquid, hold their

shape and not appear mushy.Canned tomatoes should be free from white veining or

white or green spots.Canned meats can be any kind. Tomato juice should have a strong clear red color. Juice

should be free from seeds, pieces of skin or any core.Sauerkraut should have a light creamy color. White

color indicates no fermentation. Dark color results from exposure to air or spoilage. Pink streaks indicate uneven distribution of salt. Must be sealed.Always check for seal of jar. The center lid should be

firm and not click when pressed with your finger.Select jars of products that are pretty well uniform in

size and shape.Jelly should “quiver” or shake when turned sideways in

jar. It should be clear throughout when held to the light; no pieces of fruit.Dark color in preserves indicates over cooking.Syrup for preserves should be thick enough to move

slowly, with a definite pull when jar is turned to side. The pack is largely fruit, but thoroughly distributed in syrup.Small to medium size cucumbers should be used for

pickles.Pickles should not be shriveling. All jellies should be free of mold and sealed.

RULES:Only standard jars with standard lids will be accepted

for entry. Example: No peanut butter or mayonnaise jars.Only 1 jar per immediate family may be entered in the

same category.Pints, quarts, or standard jelly jars should be used.
