Two years ago, Spoden- Bolz’s aunt, Joann, who orig- inally owned the property for 27 years, was looking to get it off her hands. After con- tracting polio at a young age, it was becoming difficult to enjoy the lake without assis- tance. That afternoon, Eric sustained a fractured skull on the left side of his head and bled on two areas of his brain while cutting down trees for firewood. Massmann, his parents, Duane and Ruth, and his fiancée, Emily Mergen, milk 100 cows in a double-8 parallel parlor on their farm near Richmond. On Dec. 5, Eric and Duane were busy cutting firewood for the winter. Duane was in the skidloader while Eric was running the chainsaw to cut down a 70-foot-tall, 24-inch-diameter ash tree. Eric had already cut 4 inches from the center on one side of the tree and was starting to cut in on the other side of the tree. He had gotten 3 inches from the center of the tree, when it split in half 15 feet above him, kicking the tree, along with Eric and his chainsaw, 15 feet away. “It just popped. It happened so fast,” Duane said. “I got out of the skidloader and called for Eric to see where he was. He didn’t answer. All I heard was the chainsaw idling.” Duane followed the sound of the chainsaw and found Eric face down with his head on the chainsaw with a large portion of the tree on top of his right arm and shoulder. “I immediately shut the chainsaw off so it wouldn’t start running,” Duane said. “I noticed his arm was stuck and knew I had to get the tree off of him.” Taking action right away, Duane moved the chainsaw out from under Eric’s head and began cutting 4 feet away on each side to roll the tree off of his arm. “After I got the tree off of him, he was moaning but not responsive,” Duane said. “I got him kneeling up, and I saw Lake life on a budget Spoden-Bolz builds dream cabin LAKE CABIN continued on page 5 PHOTOS BY JENN JANAK Jackie Spoden-Bolz stands near her 820-square-foot cabin, which is located on Knaus Lake in Cold Spring. One evening in mid-April I found myself at an area Dairy Queen. As I waited for my order, there was a nice young mom with a couple little girls wait-ing in the booth next to me for their food as well. I didnt mean to eaves-drop, but my interest was instant-ly piqued when I heard her praising the older daughter, who might have been about seven or eight, for what a wonderful job she had done picking rocks that day. Dad, still in his work clothes, brought them their food and sat down. By that time my mind was al-ready back to the rock-picking days of my youth. If you grew up on our farm or any farm at the time you picked rocks every spring from the time you were old enough until you moved away. We lived on a farm south of Sauk Centre, where it seemed there was always plenty of rocks to be picked. Every year a new crop had grown, and I always wondered if the earth would ever run out. It didnt. Some fields were worse than others, though none of them as bad as areas farther north, where it looked like you could walk across the field on the rocks without ever touching the ground. Picking rocks was always exciting to meat

first. Wed get home from school about 3:30 in the afternoon, go out and pick a load before supper, and again after milking. On Saturdays and after school was out for the summer, wed put in much longer days. We had a large enough family to have a decent crew of two or three on each side of the wagon sometimes more if our cousins got into the action. We took turns driving the tractor. We had an old two-wheel trailer that was quite close to the ground, which helped when we carried our armloads of rocks to the wagons. Throwing rocks onto the wagon was strongly discouraged, and luck-ily I dont recall anyone ever getting hurt, except for occasionally getting a finger smashed between rocks. When we came to an exceptionally big rock, Id always try to get to it first in hopes of being able to lift it. After all, it was a matter of pride to carry a rock to the wagon that weighed half as much as you did! Oftentimes, someone bigger than me would come over and order me to get out of the way so they could do it. Rocks that were too big were left behind, to be dug up with the loader tractor later. Unloading the wagon took a little while and was a nice break from picking. There was a tiny lake at one end of the farm, which was my favorite place to unload. Wed skip rocks on the water if we found the right ones, but then it was time to go again. As the days went on, everyone just wanted to be done. It was no longer fun, and I no longer ran to get to that big rock. Towards the very end of the rock-picking season, I always looked forward to the treat at the end of the tunnel a trip to the Dairy Queen. When we were done, we all loaded up in the car and went to town. We each got an ice cream cone, and truly appreciated it. Looking back, picking rocks was one of the best things we could have done. We were out in the sun-shine and fresh air. We experienced nature. Things like a killdeer protecting her young. I was always amazed at the ferociousness and courage of those tiny birds in the face of gigantic humans and trac-tors. Every once in a while youd find a treasure. My dad once found a meteorite, and my own kids came across a well-used Native American stone hammer,

which sits on my desk to this day. The Stearns Histo-ry Museum has confirmed it as a hammer used by the Sioux. You learned what hard work was and how to get along with others even when the fun of what you were doing was gone. Sure, there were occasional squabbles, but nothing too extreme. At the end of the day, you were covered in dirt, including in your nose and ears, and even your teeth more or less depend-ing upon the wind that day. I wish all kids could go through at least one sea-son of rock picking. Theyd never forget it. Its some-thing so basic and simple, but teaches so much. And I would love for them to savor a Dairy Queen cone after weeks of hard work, a reward to celebrate a job well done.

PHOTOS BY DIANE LEUKAMRock piles like this often line the groves of farm sites and represent lots of hard work. This one is never-end-ing, going the entire length of the grove.

Sometimes treasures are found while picking rocks, like the large meteorite (above left) found many years ago by my dad, and the Native American stone tool found by my daughters. The Stearns History Museum has confirmed it as a hammer used by the Sioux.

This was our first cabin on the lake, she said. We had a lot to learn about building regulations. After working through many reg-ulations and variances, the Bolzes were finally able to build their lake cabin. The couple was looking to erect the smallest legal cabin. They drew plans to construct a 17-by-30-foot

building, with the remaining area being used for a porch. Once com-pleted, the project would consume a 34-by-24 and 1 1/2-inch area on the property. At first we didnt realize the porch was a part of the total square

Spoden-Bolz was able to find items to furnish her cabin at discounted prices. We found a man on Craigslist who was selling materials for a cab-in, she said. We bought 17 win-dows from him, and our table and chair set came from a garage sale. She also reused items, such as old doors, to create the window seats she desperately wanted. Its crazy to think of the deals there are all around, Spoden-Bolz said. It was interesting to see where stuff comes from and how much we were able to save. As last summer drew to an end, the Bolzes had almost completed their project. They still needed to put final touches on the interior, but the

cabin was livable. In September, Spoden-Bolz brought her aunt out to see the reno-vated property for the first time since her niece took over the property. The most exciting day was when we were able to show Joann the cab-in. I didnt want her seeing it until it was nearly complete, Spoden-Bolz said. She cried when she saw it. Im excited to bring her out again this summer. Step by step, the Bolzes have cre-ated their dream cabin. Although the building process and legalities were a headache for Spoden-Bolz, she is looking forward to having her small living quarters on the water. After the cabin is complete, the couple plans to build a new dock for their pontoon. We can really do a lot of stuff, Spoden-Bolz said. Weekends will be a lot of fun. We have seven chil-dren and six grandkids who will all be able to come visit and sleep over. For Spoden-Bolz, her new life on the lake will be a small, but luxurious one. Its so peaceful to just sit and watch the lake. You cant beat that, Spoden-Bolz said. Our small cabin has the same view as a million-dollar house down the road thats some-thing you cant buy.

    DIRECT INJECTION

his cheek was turning black, blue and green. But when his head dropped and I saw the cut on his head, I knew I was going to need some help. Instantly, Duane called his two nephews, Kurt and Al, to help bring Eric in the yard. Once they got Eric in the yard, Kurt ran to the house and asked Ruth for the address so he could call 911. I asked him what happened, and he told me that Eric got hit by a tree in the head, Ruth said with tears in her eyes. It still gets to me. My heart stopped. Shortly after they made the call, the Richmond Chain of Lakes rescue squad and the Paynesville ambulance responded and took Eric to the St. Cloud hospital. Ruth called her daughter, Jennifer Leukam, to tell her what happened and told her to call Emily. When I got the phone call from her, I knew something bad had hap-pened because she never calls me at work, Mergen said. When she told me what happened, I handed my phone to someone and told them that I was going to the hospital. Eric underwent surgery right away. They put in a plate to correct the skull fracture on the left side of his head, stopped a subdural and an epidural bleed on his brain and put in 57 staples to close the incision. Besides the fractured skull and two blood clots a subdural and an epidur-al bleed on his brain, the only other injuries Eric had were bruising on his arm, chest and back and a cut on his head from the accident, which they closed up with seven stitches. I dont know if it was the tree or the chainsaw that made that cut, Eric said. I may never know. For the first four days, Eric was kept in an induced coma in the inten-sive care unit (ICU). Once he woke up, he stayed in the ICU for two more days. They wanted to make sure he was able to respond to commands like mov-ing his feet, squeezing something and opening his eyes, Mergen said. After he was cleared, Eric was transferred to the Neuro Progressive Unit on Dec. 11. He had one-on-one time with a patient care assistant there, Mergen said. They also evaluated what he was going to need for therapy. On Dec. 17, Eric began physical, speech and occupational therapy in the hospital. It was hard core, Ruth said. They did three 45-minute sessions every day with him, but he progressed well. Both Mergen and Ruth stayed in

the hospital with Eric. Duane came in every day, but also went home to get chores done on the farm. Thankfully, Duane didnt have to do it alone. His other son, Adam, and Jennifer and her husband, Erik, took time off of work to help on the farm and visit Eric in the hospital. The Massmanns

also had many neighbors, friends and family step in to provide meals and even help with feeding and milking the cows. We are so grateful for all the prayers and help they all gave us, Ruth said. It meant a lot. After three weeks in the hospital, Eric was released the day after Christ-mas. It was a relief to go home, Eric said. But being at home did have its lim-itations at the beginning. I wasnt able to lift anything over

15 pounds, I couldnt drive and for the first two weeks, someone had to be with me at all times, Eric said. It was frustrating. I knew I had to be careful, but I was going stir crazy. With Eric back home, Mergen took the journal she kept while he was in the hospital and the photos from the acci-dent and his recovery and made it into a book. I wanted him to have something to look back on, Mergen said. Ruth even appreciates the book. Its a really nice book, she said. A month after he was released, Eric was out helping in the barn again. It felt good to be back out and helping with milking occasionally, he said. Now, almost five months after his accident, Eric is back to working full-time on the farm. I still feel the plate a little bit, oth-erwise I feel 100 percent now, Eric said. Im back to normal. Seeing her son back in the barn has been a relief for Ruth. Hes so glad to be back helping like he used to, she said. It feels like a miracle. Even with a full recovery, Eric re-

LITTLE SAUK Each year during the spring, the Fearings see rabbits, birds, deer and many other different types of wildlife on their property. But on May 3, the one thing Sharon and Jim Fearing werent expecting to see was a black bear at their home near Little Sauk. I was purely astonished to see a bear like that, Sharon said. Jim was equally surprised. Most people who live among bears never see one, he said. They are usual-

ly scared and shy creatures. In the early morning hours of May 3, Sharon and Jim were sound asleep with the windows of their bedroom open to let the cool morning air in. Sharon was awakened early that morning from a sound outside. I heard a blood-curdling scream from an animal, she said. Of course, going back to sleep at that point wasnt an option. As she stayed in bed for a few more minutes, she heard her two dogs begin to growl. It started out as a soft growl and eventually got louder with a bark, she said. So, I decided to get up and see what was going on. As I walked out there, I could hear coyotes howling. I figured thats what they were barking at, so I sat on the couch to relax for a little

bit. But as she sat on the couch, she could hear the metal dish she set out for the cats the night before mov-ing on the deck. At first I thought it was my imagination, Sharon said. But when I heard it again, I figured it was probably a raccoon since weve had a lot of those around late-ly. Hoping to chase off the rac-coon, Sharon went to turn on the outside light, and saw a 6.5-foot black bear standing there in-stead. I was frozen for a minute, I sat there and thought, what do I do, she said. It was a little too close for comfort for me. Surprisingly, the bear continued to eat from the bird feeder on the deck with his paws on top of it, his nose over the top and his tongue pulling mouthfuls of the sunflower seeds and nuts from the bird feeder. I was shocked he didnt do any-thing when I turned the light on, Sharon said. I just left him alone as he sat there and kept eating. After a few minutes of watching the bear and keeping her dogs calm, Sharon decided to go wake up Jim. I didnt tell him it was a bear, but I told him he had to come and see this, Sharon said. When Jim looked out the window to see the black bear, he was equally as sur-prised as Sharon was. I thought, oh my goodness that is one big bear. He was a wow thats for sure, he said. I hunted bear for 40 years and that was by far the biggest one Ive ever seen. But what also surprised Jim was how close the bear stayed after Sharon turned the light on. This one was exceptionally bold. Normally they are afraid of you, Jim said. But he wasnt aggressive. We werent even six feet from him and he just went about his business. He couldnt have cared less. After carefully capturing a few photos of the bear, Jim opened the door enough to try and shoo the bear away.

I hollered and clapped at him, and he just got up slowly and walked down the steps, Jim said. He was so big that when he was walking down the steps, his butt just barely fit between the railings on both sides of the steps. Although the Fearings were able to get the black bear to leave that morning, he reappeared for three nights in a row after that. We were at a ball game the other night and we didnt get back until 10 p.m. When we pulled up, there he was again, Jim said. He even broke our bird feeder. Jim knows the bear keeps coming back for food. Theyve just come out of hiber-nation, so they are hungry this time of year, he said. They have the best nose of any animal. They can smell food from miles away. Knowing that, the Fearings have re-moved the food availability. Hell go away once he realizes there is no food for him here any more, Jim said. But, the Fearings alerted their neigh-bors about the bear and told them to lock their garages up at night and make sure to keep food, like dog and cat food, tucked away, too. The best thing you can do is leave them alone and keep the food tucked away, Jim said. Looking back on their experience, it is one that will stay with the Fearings for a while. Its not something you expect to happen, Sharon said. Its something I wont soon forget.

A meal that takes 16-18 hours to cook better taste darn good, right? For those who have been to a pit barbeque, they know that the savory taste of beef brisket is well worth the wait. Steve and Suss Kluver, along with friends Mark and Gwen Kranz, all of Sauk Centre, have hosted such a party the past five years. It started off as a fish boil, a popular trend they learned of while visiting Door County, Wis. But the past two years they turned to pit barbequing.

I got the idea from an old wild game cookbook, said Steve Kluver. It was something I always want-ed to try so we decided to go for it. Steve got digging. He dug a 4-foot by 4-foot pit four feet into the ground on his three acres just off the shores of Fairy Lake. He laid cement block around the base and up the sides, and created a ledge a foot off the bottom for a grate to sit on. With the pit ready, the Kluvers and Kranzes pre-pared the meat. They purchased up to 70 pounds of beef brisket from Schaefers Market in Sauk Centre and covered it with a special homemade rub. Once the meat was rubbed down with spices, it was cov-ered in wet paper bag material, which was then cov-

ered with wet newspaper. Meanwhile, a fire had been started in the pit as hot coals began to fill the bottom. Kluver aimed for a foot of hot coals before placing the wrapped meat on the grate and lowering the grate onto the ledge. Once the grate was in place, Kluver placed a piece of plywood over the hole, placed a canvas over the ply-wood and then shoveled dirt over it all to make it airtight. What it does is shut off the flame, just like turning the burner off on the stove, he said. Those coals then stay at a nice, low even temperature when the flame is out. After covering the hole, its time to sit back and wait. Timing is everything, said Klu-ver. Usually we will put the meat in about midnight the night before so its ready when people start coming the next afternoon. The method of pit barbequing is an age-old tradition that began with the indigenous people who cooked their meat and vegetables in earth ovens.

The method is believed to have originated in California by Native American tribes. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, at the end of cull-ing and leather tanning season of large cattle herds, the remaining meat would be cooked in large pit barbeques. After California became a state in 1950, the tradition was continued for outdoor fi-estas. Today, meats usually barbequed using the pit method are beef, pork and goat. Kluver said it is a fun process that doesnt take a lot of work or money. It took me about a half day to dig the hole, he said. Its definitely not rocket science. Its a lot of sweat, but doesnt cost a lot to do. And people can make their pits a lot smaller than ours. All you need is a little real estate where you dont mind digging a hole. Kluver said he dug a large pit be-cause his party has grown to about 100 people. Two years ago when he took his first try at the pit method, he was nervous. I had 100 hungry people standing

around and raised 60 pounds of meat out of the ground that I didnt know if it was going to turn out or not. It turned out to be a success. When you take the meat out of the hole its almost cool to the touch on the outside, he said. But the meat inside is the perfect temperature. The two families also serve pota-toes boiled over a campfire and supply the rest of the food to make for a mem-orable event. Its a lot of fun, Kluver said. Usually a few people bring a bottle of wine and the past two years weve had a keg of beer. Families bring their kids out and we play kickball and volley-ball. Sixteen to 18 hours might seem like a long time to wait for a meal. But when surrounded by friends, family and fun activities, the time goes by fast. Soon enough, everyone is enjoying the mouth-watering taste of traditional pit barbeque. Its fun and its well worth the wait, he said. Its incredible how it

Country View How long have you lived in the country? We have both lived in the country all our lives. This is Leos home place where his family raised dairy cattle, horses, pigs, chickens, geese, ducks and even some sheep at one point. Bernadine also grew up on a farm. As we grew older, we both did some work off the farm. Bernadine did some babysitting for a week or two at a time and Leo worked at a hospital in Hennepin County for a little bit, but in the end we both came back to the farm and the country. Life in the country is for us. Describe your place in the coun-try. We still live on Leos home farm and own 211 acres of land that reach-es Rooney Lake. We rent 100 acres to other farmers to grow their crops on. The other 111 acres, which used to be pasture for the cows, has turned into a wildlife area where our grandchil-dren go deer hunting. Besides deer, we also have started to get wild turkeys, pheasants and fox on that land. We re-ally enjoy it. We still have the old barn and buildings on the farm, too, but we dont use them. What is your favorite thing about living there? We enjoy going out and enjoying the beauty of the earth with everything growing. We also love the privacy we have out here. What is your favorite activity to do at your place? Bernadine likes to take walks down to the lake while Leo enjoys riding the four-wheeler around to check on the crops his renters are growing and see how they are doing each year.

Whats been your most memora-ble country living experience? Our grandkids would come out here and spend the summers with us. The most memorable things for us was watching them enjoy their time out here and see-ing what they would get into. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Leo enjoys going fishing and doing woodwork. Hes made flow-er planters and even a spinning wheel.

Bernadine enjoys working in several of her gardens she has on the farm. She grows strawberries, raspberries, grapes, potatoes, corn and everything else people can think of. She also en-joys quilting. Together, we enjoy play-

ing cards or relaxing in the house. Tell us something about yourself that most people dont know. There is not much people dont know about us. We are pretty plain and ordinary people.

PAYNESVILLE Wally and Darlene Thyen of Paynesville have spent 52 years on Lake Koronis. During that time, the lake has been central to their lives, especially with the role it played in raising their two children, Mike and Cherie. Mike would get home from school and he would run into his bedroom, change, grab the key and be in the boat in a minute and a half, tops, said Darlene, pointing to the spot on the counter near the door where the keys were always kept. When the kids were growing up, young people were always gathering there, many of them from sur-rounding towns. They water skied, went tubing and swam. If the sun was shining, they were in the water. If it rained, they played Monopoly, shot pool, and even cooked and baked, said Darlene. Along with the kids, adults, too, gathered at the Thyens. A pastime they often enjoyed as a larger group was tying any number of boats together into a flotilla, as they called it, and floating around the lake. Boating could also offer challenges. A favorite photo of the Thyens is from circa 1976-77, and shows Mike and his friends, in their high school years, ac-complishing a water skiing pyramid. It took them quite a while. They could never get it. As they got bigger, it took two to three boats (start-ing out) to pull them, said Wally. The kids from the outside boats would pull alongside and feed on to the middle ones. Then theyd kick off their skis and start climbing. Eventually, they accomplished their pyra-mid. Swimming was a family affair, with Darlenes fa-vorite place to swim being the middle of the lake, pre-ferring not to touch the bottom. Many times that is where I had my lunch, said Wally. He put in long hours as owner of a grocery store in Paynesville, Wallys G & T Foods. There werent many advantages to owning the store, but I abused a few of them, taking a long lunch hour. Darlene would have lunch ready and theyd head out on the lake to enjoy it. Winter life on the lake was important, too. Id take the walk-behind snow blower and make a hockey arena-sized skating rink. Wed put lights in the trees for night-time skating. Id flood the rink to make it smooth. It was a lot of work but it was fun work, said Wally. Some years, when there was no snow, theyd just skate all over. Snow and ice also played a part in their first house on the lake. It started as a cabin which was towed across the frozen lake during the winter. Through the

PHOTO BY DIANE LEUKAMWally and Darlene Thyen have enjoyed life for the past 52 years on Lake Koronis near Paynes-ville.

years, they added on to the original cabin which is basically gone now. Other things have changed too. Mike and Cherie are adults

now and have families of their own. Now it seems everything is about our grandchil-dren, said Wally. They have four grandchildren three boys and a girl. Wally always enjoyed fishing with their young grandchildren from the dock. It was always catch and release, said Darlene. The kids were tenderhearted when it came to the fish. If a fish died they felt so bad they quit. Wally and I never fished. We were always more inclined to go to the shallow areas and look at the fish under the water. We always just enjoyed the nature part of it, she said. Swimming followed through the generations. All the grandkids are such good swimmers, said Darlene. They had no fear of the water. We told them if they had trouble to just go down to the bottom and bounce back up. That lack of fear was demonstrated by the grand-kids jumping from the Tower of Terror, which is what they nicknamed a platform in the water at nearby Bug-Bee Hive Resort. I would be filling the boat up with gas and the kids would go jump off the tower, said Wally. Theyd climb up and jump off, then do it again.

They didnt waste any time up there, and the (15-20-foot) height didnt bother them, said Darlene. Another aspect of lake living the Thyens enjoyed as onlookers: sailing. Sailboats add so much personality to the lakes. Im glad when they sail by, said Wally. We just love the look of the sailboats on the wa-ter, said Darlene. Once in a while theres a regatta on the south side of the lake, with 10-15 boats. Wed ride up to watch from a distance, said Wally. About living on Lake Koronis, Wally summed it up, saying simply, Weve enjoyed the lake over the years, thats for sure.

How long have you lived on the lake? 56 years; in this home, which we built, since 1978.Tell us about your lake home. Our lake home is a split level with a walk-out basement. The main floor had two bedrooms one of which we con-verted into a home of-fice. The basement has two bedrooms, and there is also a summer porch over the garage that has five beds. We need a lot of room because almost all our family lives out of state. Weve had 20-some people staying at a time. What are some of the little moments that occur at your lake home that you treasure? The quiet, sitting on the dock, and going for walks with the grandchil-dren. Having our family/grandkids come to visit and spend weekends with us. When our grandkids were in high school they would come with their friends. Also, we had a daughter move back to Minnesota, and once a year she invites all her high school friends over. Some stay for the day and others for the weekend. What is the best experience youve had living on the lake? Our 60th wedding anniversary celebration, because we had nearly all the family, all the grandkids, and lots of people here.Tell us about some of the biggest events you have at your lake home. Weve had a couple of weddings here, and again, our 60th wedding anniversary. What are some of the improvements youve made to your lake home? Wally: We added a porch on the back several years after we built the house. Other than that we havent done anything. Betty designed the house and she did it right so we didnt have to make changes.

ing smores and talking about our past and future. Some years ago, we had a big thunderstorm with lots of rain with people sleeping in tents. The tents got blown over and everybody had to come into the house to sleep. We moved all the furni-ture together and put chairs on the table so people could sleep on the floor and under the tables.

What are some of the improvements youve made to your lake home? Explain. In 1993, when we sold the Hardware Hank store in Mel-rose, we completely gutted the inside of the house. We re-plumbed, re-wired and re-insulated everything. We changed part of the floor plan to add an extra bathroom and changed the third bed-room into a formal dining room for our antique table, chairs and buffet that are over 100 years old. We also found an old light fixture to use the globes from Johns mom s house in Minneapo-lis when they remodeled in 1961 to place in our dining room. Then, we added the third bedroom above the garage, doing all the work ourselves. We put in all new windows, plus a 12-foot patio window including the door facing the lake. We

had help from our friend, Howard Carstens from Carstens Industries and some of his employees, to install the bow window in the living room, picture window in the formal dining room and patio window and door. Our family helped us install the dormer window in our bedroom above the garage. Our neighbors, the Wanders, helped us install the car siding ceiling throughout the house. We had LeClarie Electric install electric heat in the floor throughout the house. JCT Construction installed the kitchen and bathroom cabinets plus all the closets. We added air conditioning installed by Phil Osendorf. We re-varnished and re-used a lot of the old pine car siding and Marie did all the varnishing and staining of the windows, doors and woodwork. John installed the tile in the bathrooms and entryways. All this was done in nine months while we were living here. In 1995, we put in a 21- by 24-foot deck on the backside of the house. We also installed a 16- by 30-foot patio using pavers on the lakeside of the house. Depending on the weather, its usually nice on one of the sides. We also landscaped the shoreline with rocks to save from erosion and planted shrubs along the roadside. Plus, we put in an underground sprinkling system and new sod. In 2010, we replaced our sewer to a mound system across the road, so we couldnt have any strawberry or raspberry patches and no more garden spot. We call it our elephant graveyard.

How long have you lived on the lake? We moved here on Aug. 15, 1988.Tell us about your lake home: Our yard is a small 50-foot-wide by 375-feet-deep lot with a 1,000-square-foot house. We didnt want a big house when we were ready to retire. We have a shed across the road where John does wood-working. He makes things for the kids, grandkids and craft shows. Crosses and jewelry boxes are his favorite. He also makes fold down tables for campers and computer desks. What are some little moments that occur at your lake home that you treasure? One day, just before the lake froze over, we saw 13 bald eagles catching fish from an area, which started to freeze over. We watched them dive to catch fish and they would sometimes drop them be-cause they were too big and dove again until they could fly away with their catch. We have a loon nest not too far away from our house so we can watch them when they are on the nest laying their eggs. When they hatch, its great to see the mom and dad feeding the babies. Once they start swimming, the mom and dad are very protective of them. They catch minnows and feed them. One year in the fall, a goose couldnt fly south, so the neighbor and Marie fed the goose because they felt sorry for it. Boy what a mess the goose left on the yard. One day, Marie decid-ed it was enough and called the game warden. He came out and walked up to the goose and, lo and behold, it flew away. The following day, John called the game warden because the goose came back and told him we have a goose that cannot fly not knowing that he was out the day before. He had to laugh and asked John if we do not communicate because he was there and the goose could fly.

What is the best experience youve had living on the lake? Living on the lake, John can go fishing anytime he wants and Marie likes to kayak early in the morn-ing when the sun rises and the lake is calm, with the loons and ducks swimming and the bald eagles flying around. The sunrise and moonrise are absolutely beau-tiful shining across the lake because we face northeast. When the grandkids were smaller, they would come at least three to four times a week to swim and fish off the dock. It is also great to watch them go tubing and kayaking. Tell us about some of the biggest events you have at your lake home? Having family gatherings gives many of our relatives and us great memories with water fighting, fishing, boating, skiing, paddle boating, kayaking and camp fires mak-

How long have you lived on the lake? Eight years. We are both originally from small towns in Wisconsin, then Brooklyn Park. We had been coming up here for 40 years. Tell us about your lake home. This has always been our dream, to have our own home on the lake. We have two, one-acre lots, with a pole barn on the one across the road. And now we have a garden. One day, Rob was out fishing with his brother (from Virginia) when they spotted this home. Rita and her sister-in-law went out and found this place right away. We fell in love with it.What are some of the little moments that occur at your lake home that you treasure? The birds. We have ev-ery kind of bird imaginable. We start every day out making a pot of coffee, playing hand and foot (a card game) and watching the birds. There are very few days we miss. We also like watch-ing the people where they go to fish. Gardening with our neighbor, a widower who shares his garden space with us. We cant tell you how much we love it here. The people here are so friendly, and one of the best things is a traffic jam is five cars.

What is the best experience youve had living on the lake? It doesnt happen enough, but we have three daughters and eight grandkids, and we love to have them visit. Ron takes the kids fishing, and Rita takes the girls out to places like Carlos Creek Winery. The girls have coffee on the deck early in the mornings. When Rita has a girls weekend, Rob has to leave. Once he even stayed at a hotel after their house in Brooklyn Park sold and kept himself entertained by golfing with his buddies.

Tell us about some of the biggest events you have at your lake home? We dont have any big events. Again, when the kids come home is big. What are some of the improvements youve made to your lake home? Explain. We put in new kitchen cabinetry, with one full cabinet for spices. The cabinet maker didnt think wed fill it, but ended up adding two more shelves. We added a pantry, ceramic flooring and carpeting, and painted most of the house. We also finished off the laundry room with an area for quilting for Rita, who has sewn over 200 quilts since moving here. We finished the basement, painted it Green Bay Packers colors and made a pool room out of it. A large leather couch pulls out to a king-size bed for guests. Also in the basement, we turned the room where the former owner raised his plants (he was a master gardener), into a library/craft room. Outside, we havent done much, but have plans for a larger, maintenance-free deck, stone on the front of the house and a new front porch with a place to gather.

How long have you lived on the lake? This Oc-tober will be three years. Tell us about your lake home. Our lake home is a bit deceiving. From the road it appears as a smaller cabin type home. Living on the lake we quickly realized people dont feature the home on the road side, but the lake side. Walk around to the lake side of the house and you see the win-dows with the wonderful lake view and you re-alize the house is much bigger than it appears from the front. Our upstairs floorplan is the same as the downstairs, equaling four bedrooms, 2.5 baths, two kitchens, two living rooms, a sunroom and mancave. The basement has a homey cabin type feel, making it comfortable and easy when we have friends or family over, especially with the extra living room and kitchen. The property is just over an acre and we have 150 feet of san-dy lake shore (great for fishing and swimming). We also have a cement patio walkout from the basement and a deck facing the lake, and main-tenance free cedar siding. We are situated so we can enjoy both the sunrises and sunsets. What are some of the little moments that occur at your lake home that you treasure? Jason: The lake is full of little surprises and treasures. The wild life is a treasure we really enjoy. The water draws a lot of visitors so its always fun to see what critters will show up next. There is nothing better than sitting on our dock in the evenings listening to the loons. The sunset is amaz-ing, absolutely one of our favorite parts of the day. Our home faces west so we get a great lake sunsetbeautiful colors reflecting off the water. The giggles and laughter are also a treasure. Our kids really enjoy living on the lake. Many giggles and much laughter are created by the lake.fishing, swimming, wa-ter sports, snowmobiling, sledding down the hill to the lake. I treasure the way our kids view the lake. It has become such an important part of their lives and it will help mold the people they become. They enjoy the lake as much as we do. We also treasure the changing of the seasons. Each season brings distinct changes in the lake and we enjoy watching them all. Minnow: Watch-ing our boys jump off the end of the dock on a hot summer day, fishing off shore and hoping you have enough minnows in the minnow bucket, listening to the waves hit the shoreline and splashing against the rocks, the smell of a bonfire with smores and stars reflecting off the lake, swaying in the hammock on a windy day, the loud echoes from our state bird just before sundown, fish rings spreading across the lake when its glass, turtles laying eggs in the yard, ducks and ducks and more ducks, the lake transformation from season to sea-son, whitecaps, watching a storm either delicately or with rage make its way across the lake, shoveling a homemade rink and ice skating, and how your backyard turns into a village of fishermen during the winter.

What is the best experience youve had living on the lake? Jason: The lake is full of good experiences so its hard to narrow it down to one. Fourth of July really stands out as a great experience. Each summer we have friends over for the 4th of July holiday. Our house and yard are filled with friends and kids! It seems like the perfect summer gathering...yard games, food, music, water sports, fishing, and of course a great fireworks show. Sauk Lake has one of the best fireworks shows in the area. Minnow: We appreciate a new, best experience everyday which is the sunset that God paints us each night! Tell us about some of the biggest events you have at your lake home? Jason: Two big events correlate with the changing of the seasons. The lake freezing is always a big event. We can now ice fish, make a skating rink and snowmobile. Another big event is the ice coming off the lake. We can now get ready for the summer season! Minnow: Putting the dock, boat lift, water slide and tire swing out in the water is always a big deal its the

official kickoff to summer. And we thank our hard-working friends for helping with what we call a victory lap on the pontoon around the lake with some cold beverages! We really en-joy 4th of July with our friends some tent it and some claim rooms in the house, but the yard is always full of kids playing or swimming and the fireworks show is spectacular with music! Were starting a new snowmobile weekend tra-dition with friends and familybegin and end on the lake. Each summer we have a swimming/bbq birthday party with family and friends that we look forward to as well. Fishing opener is always a big deal! We use the lake for both rec-reation and fishing were hoping they keep a nice balance between the two. Our backyard is always open to friends and family. We have visitors often and very much enjoy it when they stop by, relax and appreciate Sauk Lake with us! Were lucky to have this lake as a part of what our community has to offer! What are some of the improvements youve made to your lake home? Explain. Jason: We are always working on something. Ive been

very surprised with the amount of work that goes into our lake home and lake shore. When we moved in our home had a boat landing, we had that removed right away as we will never use it. We put our boat in the lake in the spring and take it out in the fall, we dont have any reason to travel to other lakes. We continually try to improve our lakeshore. Adding rock and vegetation to prevent erosion has been important to us. My wife really likes nice grass, so weve been working hard to get grass established in places that it wasnt grow-ing so well. We have cut down some dead trees. We have added new kitchen cabinets and counter tops. Minnow: We decided to remove our private boat launch and replace it with sod to give more room for our kids to play. With help and advice from the Sauk River Watershed District we resolved some erosion issues on both sides of our house. Weve made some improvements to our home and look forward to finishing off some three-season rooms to four season. We also put in two fire pits to have an option on windy days.

How long have you lived on the lake? Since 1981Tell us about your lake home: The house is on the east side of the lake and is a two-bedroom home with plenty of windows and a deck to give lots of lake views. I have a great view of sunsets from the house. What are some of the little mo-ments that occur at your lake home that you treasure? I have so many memories of animal life by the lake. I watch the wood ducks in the spring and see lots of cardinals in the winter. I once caught about eight rac-coons stealing birdseed. About once a year I seem to have a memorable thing happen with animals here. What is the best experience youve had living on the lake? I used to do quite a bit of walking in the woods nearby and once had a grouse follow me for three days in a row along my walk. It was such a funny thing and I will never forget that. Tell us about some of the biggest events you have at your lake home? There arent many big events I can think of, but many small events over the years. Each year I enjoy the boat parade put

on by the Two Rivers Lake Association and I always enjoy the gatherings the association has at the homes of the members. My neighbors are great and they keep me socializing, which I enjoy. What are some of the improvements youve made to your lake home? Explain. I have not had to change much since the house was purchased aside from general upkeep, but we planted all the trees that are on the property and just this spring I planted another group of ev-ergreens and started a new flower garden in the front yard.
