Hello Everyone,

The Senior Center Building Expansion is closing in on completion! All the major systems are up and run-

ning and will be undergoing testing throughout the next few weeks. The exterior, as you can see if you’re a

user of the Center, is nearly complete with just some landscaping and lighted bollards left to go. The interior

is just plain gorgeous. The bathrooms are bright and cheerful, the rooms are closing in on their punch lists,

and the temporary barrier between the two structures will be coming down soon. The final heavy construc-

tion is the main stairway connecting the two floors in the main lobby. These elements are scheduled for de-

livery in October and we expect the stairway to be finished by November. Did we say gorgeous? We think

everyone will be extremely happy with the new addition. The Building Committee representatives have been

working on the tedious job of wayfinding signage, furniture, and final window treatments. This work may

continue for a few months after the Town takes ownership of the addition. This is the penultimate newslet-

ter, we hope that you have enjoyed watching your center getting ready to serve our community for the next

fifty years!

Q & A ~ Will the national supply chain issue affect the finish date?

Answer, yes. The supply chain will affect the delivery of most of our furniture and some finish lighting and

millwork products. While these issues are difficult for the team to deal with, they should not delay the pro-

ject from completion.

DIRECTOR’S CORNER

Greetings to Everyone,

We are happy to report that we anticipate opening the new wing of the Senior Center by the end of No-

vember. We will start with a soft opening and gradually use our new spaces for activities and programs. We

will also be planning a grand opening celebration once the furniture arrives and the finishing touches are

complete. We are actively working on hiring a food service manager to run our new café which we hope will

be up and running within the next couple of months.

November brings with it many holidays and marks the beginning of the major holiday season. November

7

th

marks the end of daylight savings. November 11

th

is Veteran’s Day where we recognize Veterans for

their sacrifice and service to our country. Marshfield will hold the annual Veteran’s Day Parade on November

11

th

and will also celebrate the grand opening of the new Veteran’s Home at 2033 Ocean St. Please see

front page for all the details.

Thanksgiving is perhaps the most popular of the American Holidays where families gather and celebrate

with traditional Thanksgiving foods such as turkey, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pies and football games. The

Council on Aging is especially thankful to all of you for helping us to get re-established since the pandemic.

We are also grateful to the town for their foresight and support for expansion of the Senior Center.

Warm Regards for a happy November, Carol Hamilton, Marshfield Council on Aging

ART MATTERS VIDEO PRESENTATION

On Monday, November 29 at 1:00 pm

culture, an event, or the experience of youth or

age. It can tell stories, be self-revealing or serve

as a commentary of social values or political insti-

tutions. Join us at the Senior Center for a look at

the many possibilities of the Portrait in art.

The US Lifesaving Service, Coast Guard, and others

saved hundreds of lives along the Massachusetts

coast, in part by utilizing specialized equipment. A

slideshow will be presented on Artifacts Used by

Coastal Lifesavers. The program will survey equip-

ment from the colonial era up to 1940. It will in-

clude objects seen in dramatic illustrations such as

the boats, breeches buoy, and Coulsen flares, and

also overlooked or smaller objects that were crucial

to enterprise such as halfway huts, watch clocks,

and watch tokens. While there will be an attempt

to cover nationally used lifesaving equipment, the

emphasis will be on artifacts that were used along

the New England coast. The speaker will be an-

tiques writer Bob Jackman. The slideshow program

will be offered on CABLE TV and on the INTERNET.

To watch on your television, tune into Channel 13

for Comcast customers or Channel 34 for Verizon

customers. To watch on the Internet, call the Sen-

ior Center at 781-834-5581 to obtain a link that

will be active for 48 hours after initial broadcast.

November Nutrition Notes

Diabetes Awareness Month By

Marcia Richards, MEd, RD, MCHES

November is American Diabetes Awareness

Month! Diabetes Awareness Month is an annual

campaign to bring awareness to the growing prev-

alence of diabetes. What is Diabe-

tes? Diabetes is a condition that

causes your blood glucose (sugar)

level to be higher than it should

be. This prevents your body from

being able to use the energy that

comes from the food and beverages consumed.

Uncontrolled blood sugar increases the risk for

nerve damage, cardiac issues, and vision prob-

lems. Why is American Diabetes Awareness Month

Important? To learn more, go to diabetes.org for

information and resources.

TECHNOLOGY CORNER

2021 MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT

OCTOBER 15 DECEMBER 7

It’s hard to believe that time of year is rolling

around again! Open Enrollment is the time of

year that Medicare Beneficiaries should review

and possibly change their drug plan or Medicare

advantage plan. Due to the unknown changing

environment of the virus and variants, we will

once again be doing appointments over the

phone. To get an appointment, please complete

an intake form posted in last month’s newsletter

(call if you need one) and we will get back to you

with an appointment time. Please be patient on

waiting for a return call. We will get to you as

soon as possible, but may take up to 7-10 busi-

ness days. When you tell us what plan you cur-

rently have, be as specific as possible. Many of

the companies (Wellcare, Silver Scripts, Humana

etc.) have multiple plans. It’s helpful to know, for

example, if you have the Wellcare Value scripts

or the Wellcare Wellness plan. Again, we will not

be able to help non-Marshfield residents. Call

your local COA or the regional SHINE office at

508-946-2490 for assistance. Thank you once

again for your trust and patience! We truly hope

you have all been well and look forward to speak-

ing with you! SHINE team, Judy, Ken, Alan & Jim

NEWS RELEASE—Social Security and

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

benefits for approximately 70 million

Americans will increase 5.9 percent in

2022, the Social Security Administration an-

nounced today. The 5.9 percent cost-of-living

adjustment (COLA) will begin with benefits paya-

ble to more than 64 million Social Security bene-

ficiaries in January 2022. Increased payments to

approximately 8 million SSI beneficiaries will

begin on December 30, 2021. (Note: some peo-

ple receive both Social Security and SSI bene-

fits). The Social Security Act ties the annual CO-

LA to the increase in the Consumer Price Index

as determined by the Department of Labor’s Bu-

reau of Labor Statistics. People may create or

access their my Social Security account online at

www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount. Information

about Medicare changes for 2022, when an-

nounced, will be available at

www.medicare.gov. For Social Security benefi-

ciaries receiving Medicare, Social Security will

not be able to compute their new benefit amount

until after the Medicare premium amounts for

2022 are announced. Final 2022 benefit

amounts will be communicated to beneficiaries in

December through the mailed COLA notice and

A NEW AND VISUAL WAY TO SUPPORT

YOUR SENIOR CENTER-The Booster

Board has been investigating ways to

raise money for the changes that need to

happen to the original Senior Center building to

create a smooth transition into the addition and

create one campus rather than two separate build-

ings. There will also be expenses involved in sup-

porting new and expanded programming as the

addition will almost double the space for holding

both new and multiple offerings of current pro-

grams. All of this comes with costs and the Boost-

ers want to be ready to meet the needs of all the

seniors who will soon enjoy the expansion. A Giv-

ing Tree has been proposed to be on permanent

display in the new entrance to the Senior Center.

It will be an attractive bronze and acrylic multi-

dimensional sculptural piece and will be covered

with different colored metal leaves that are en-

graved with messages from the donors. Peg Davis

and Suzanne Allmendinger went on a field trip to

Boston to view three different Giving Trees at vari-

ous nonprofits in the city to be sure we would pur-

chase a high-quality tree sculpture that will en-

hance our Senior Center. We are still working on

pricing and procurement of the Giving Tree and

will have more information next month.

Lastly, thank you to Lorraine Lawn for donating

her extensive plant collection last month to help

the Boosters raise over $100.
