ANTIQUE SLIDESHOW ON: History of South Shore Decoys and Bird Carvings

On Thursday, August 31 at 1:00 pm The South Shore has received national attention for its rich tradition of whittling decoys and creating decorative bird carvings. Focus will be on the era from 1870 to 1940, but a few later craftsmen will be mentioned. We will overview the range of men who either made decoys for friends or per-sonal use as well as men and companies who made birds for commercial sale. We know the identity of some makers, but the identity of many mak-ers is undetermined. The speaker will be antiques writer Bob Jackman. If you have an antique decoy from the South Shore, bring them to the show, and Bob will be happy to offer comments. While the talk will be organized around a sequence of 70 slides, the atmosphere will be informal with ques-tions and answers throughout the presentation. Expect to learn a bit, share some laughs, and have a good time. Admission is free but please sign up as refreshments will be served.

Nutritional Facts and Resources for Older Adults. Food insecurity is growing among older adults. The food insecurity rate for all senior households was 8.3% in 2015, down slightly from the year before but up from 5.5% in 2001. At the same time, the percentage of seniors facing the threat of

hunger has more than doubled. There are many local options that help people to combat food insecurity. (Source NCOA) SNAP The SNAP program, (formerly Food Stamps) provides credits on elec-tronic cards that enable recipients to buy nutritious food at participat-ing stores. In the U.S., over 4.8 million low-income adults over age 60 rely on SNAP to stay healthy and make ends meet. On average, they receive $108 per month to help put food on the table. If you are inter-ested in more information contact the Marshfield COA. The Local Food Pantry The Marshfield Food Pantry is now located at Library Plaza and open every Tuesday and Friday from 9:30 – 12:00 noon and Wednesday evenings from 6:30 – 8:30 PM. Participants receive food and personal care items. The amount of food a family receives is dependent upon the number of people in the family. A family receives food for approxi-mately 5 days of breakfast, lunch and dinner. Home deliveries are available for the homebound and disabled. The Marshfield COA bus can provide rides to the food pantry. Congregate Lunch The Old Colony Elder Services (OCES) Nutrition Program enhances the quality of life for older adults by providing nutritionally sound and satisfying meals. Meals are available Monday through Friday at noon at the Marshfield Senior Center. In addition to enjoying a nutritious meal, the community dining gives you opportunities for socialization and education. There is a nominal suggested donation. Meals on Wheels If you are unable to prepare nutritious meals at home, you can receive home-delivered meals through Meals on Wheels (MOW). MOW gives you a connection to the community and also serves as a safety check. The OCES monthly menu is planned by a registered dietician. They also offer therapeutic meals for those who have special diets. Council on Aging (COA) The Marshfield Council on Aging has a breakfast club program on Monday and Thursday mornings. Snacks and refreshments are also offered at various events at the Senior Center. The COA also provides educational programs on healthy eating such as the one being offed this month in conjunction with OCES. The COA bus provides transpor-tation to supermarkets at least three times per week and also daily transportation to the congregate lunch program at the Senior Center. If you have any questions or need assistance with accessing any of these programs or benefits, please contact the COA.
