Unique School Programs/Accomplishments: (Things We’re Most Proud Of)
6-8th Grade Project-Based School. Advisor-guided projects transitioning into student-led projects in 6th grade;
student-led projects in 7th and 8th grades.
Personally designed learning plans for every student, highlighting academic and life goals for the academic
school year and beyond.
100% of LDI students designed their own learning projects guided by the WI State Standards.
LDI students and advisors spoke at multiple conferences including: UW-La Crosse Student WEA, Wisconsin
Mathematics Council Mathematical Proficiency for Every Student Conference, and UW-La Crosse Social Justice
week.
LDI partnered with the School District of La Crosse’s two other charter middle schools to collaboratively engage
in an Innovation Showdown, where students completed design challenges in a short amount of time, working on
the life skills of collaboration, teamwork, and communication.
Successful 1:1 iPad utilization to help develop digitally literate citizens.
One hundred percent (100%) of students at LDI have progressed in at least one measure of life skills from
quarter one to quarter four. These are: collaboration, teamwork, and communication.
LDI students and advisor partnered with UW-La Crosse History Department to learn the history of La Crosse
through works of art, culminating in a show at the Pump House called [art]ifact.
LDI implemented 3 Pre-Showcases, with over 50 community volunteers assisting students from UW-L, Viterbo,
Gundersen Lutheran, RSVP, CRALC Board, and members from UW-L Student WEA.
All students completed a spring passage portfolio conference to demonstrate readiness for the next grade level
and/or high school.
Three showcases held (November, February, May) with over 300 community members and families attending at
each event. Last showcase of the year hosted with 7 Rivers Community High School.
All students use online math program: ALEKS. This program allows students to work at own level anywhere and
at any time they have Wi-Fi.
LDI students hosted two successful fundraising events: LDI Lasagna Dinner and the Not-So-Late Night Show;
both were student-led fundraisers.
Students of LDI successfully design, create, and perform student-led presentations to peers and the community
at least 10 times per year.
Awarded LPEF Grants for Animation Software, National Council Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), Mathematics
Education Trust (MET) grants totaling over $5,000.
Fifth year of existence as a school, LDI hosted 5 PDS students.

Longfellow Middle School- a TRUE “Middle School Philosophy”
Longfellow Middle School named, Apple Distinguished School for 2015-2016. This award is based on the
advanced use of technology for student learning. There are only 4 schools in the State of Wi with this honor.
Transformational learning for all students with the iPad- fourth year of a full 6-8th grade iPad implementation.
Longfellow Middle School is the leader in technology learning for our students in the district.
PBIS School of Distinction- 2014 to present. The Longfellow Way as it is referred to is the systems we have in
place to identify appropriate and inappropriate behavior and to reward our students for aiding our building and sustaining our culture.
Continuation of Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s). These PLC’s drove continuous instructional
improvement for all of our students. A concentration was placed on Tier I Universal Instruction-particularly common formative assessments.
Response to Intervention (RTI) systems set up to respond immediately to the academic needs of our students
based on data and formative assessments. In particular, the Tier II and Tier III students. Concentration on Tier
III services for all students.
Shared teaching curriculum between teachers and pods- Understanding by Design (UBD) Teachers identify what
students should know and be able to demonstrate on the front end of instruction.
Fifth year of Professional Development School (PDS) with UW-La Crosse. Longfellow/LDI Staff worked with 34
clinical I and II students to continue this collaboration.
A school of excellence based on community/global service. Community Services performed at or for: Coulee
Region Humane Society, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Myrick Center, Gunderson Health System, students in Santa Celia in Nicaragua, Haiti Earthquake Medical Relief, Mayo Cancer Center, Homeless Shelters
Seventh Annual School-Wide “5K Running For A Reason” Fund-Raising Project for La Crosse YMCA Live Strong
Program for cancer survivors.
Very active Longfellow Clothing/Food Pantry. This pantry was designed to meet the basic needs of our students.
The focus was on every day hunger and centered on nutritious snacks for our students.
Equal Exchange Fair Trade Project-6th grade entrepreneurs pair up with businessmen in South America and sell
products from these countries. Students corresponded with Peruvian artists through Skype and pen pal letters with their children. The profits were donated.
Our middle school band students were represented at two major events this year: the first performance occurred
at the Rotunda of the State Capitol in March of 2015 and the second was when our students played for the National Band Association (NBA) in Appleton WI in January of 2016.
