What a merry month May has been for Cougar spring sports!

HNA’s Ultimate Frisbee team advanced to State for the first time in the program’s young (six-year) history, while the track & field and softball teams brought home their respective Metro Champion-ships. The golf team sent a record six players to Districts; one competed at last week’s State golf tournament, finishing 18th overall.

The tennis team qualified five athletes for Districts, and two lacrosse players made the All-Conference team, with one being named All-State! Four softball players were named Metro All-League, while Cougar crew triumphed at the Northwest Youth Championships, and is sending a record 25 rowers to compete next week at the USRowing Youth Nationals in California.

SOFTBALL: Metro Champs! Cougar softball finished the regular season with an 11–4 Metro League record, tied with Bainbridge for the Mountain Division’s top seed in the Metro tournament. A coin flip gave Bainbridge the tour-nament top seed and HNA the second spot. After an 11–1 win over Ingraham, the Cougars faced previously undefeated Garfield in the semifi-nal game. In a 7–6 thriller, our young women beat the Bulldogs, avenging an early-season loss, and sending the Cougars into the championship game against Bainbridge and a 6–4 victory for HNA’s second consecutive Metro championship!

Two losses in the SeaKing District Tournament ended the Cougars’ season with a final record of 16–9 (13–7 in the regular season). Four Cougars were named to the All-Metro team by a vote of league coaches: outfielders Nicole Johnson ’19 and Molly Jones ’19, infielder Emily Flora ’19, and pitcher Logan Luebbe ’19. Two other HNA athletes were voted to the All-Mountain Division team: Kristina Johnson ’18 and Devon Chapman ’18.

LACROSSE Standouts: Midfielder Isabella Holmes ’19 led the Cougars with 31 points, while Emma Cutner ’18 contributed 23 points; Macallister Ballaine ’19 scored 13 points and led the team with 31 draw controls this season. Haily Santorsola ’18 was team leader in ground balls (36) and in caused-turnovers (20).

All-State, All-Conference: Congratulations to Haily Santorsola for being named to both the All-State and All-Conference teams, and to Isabella Holmes, who was named to the All-Conference squad. Cougar lacrosse finished the season 4–7–1.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE: First Time to State Highlights: For the first time in the program’s six-year history, HNA’s Ultimate team qualified for the State bracket! On Tuesday (May 29), the Cougars fell to the State host team, Seattle’s Roosevelt HS, marking the end of a season in which the players made extraordinary strides forward. After playing close games at the beginning of the season, the team put in the work and began to play more solidly against teams that had earlier beaten them, most notably in the second game against Bainbridge Island. The biggest improvement for the team has been on defense, primarily using zone to generate turns and fast-breaking immediately for scores.

Standouts: Notable players in recent weeks were Lyra D'Souza ’19 and Nori Catalano ’19, who have remained con-sistent and taken on big roles. Steadfast Alana Ross ’20 was solid in the backfield, while Carmen Sidler-Dever ’21 worked hard to earn blocks and goals, consistently running hard on every point she played.

Coach Molly McKeon ’05 is tremendously proud of this team and the individual work every athlete put in.
