For the month of December we

will be working on an algebra unit

in sixth grade math. We will be

learning the following skills: writ-

ing and evaluating

algebraic expres-

sions, solving one-

step equations using

basic operations,

and analyzing and

creating algebraic

equations from ta-

bles and graphs.

Our classes have just finished the

unit on fossil evidence and plate

tectonics, and will be taking an

assessment on Dec. 8 - 9. We will

be beginning our unit

on earthquakes soon.

Students have been

assigned a First Se-

mester Project, and

have been given in-

formation related to

the project.

We are learning about the econ-

omy. We are discussing the differ-

ent ways in which goods are pro-

duced, distributed, and con-sumed. We are also examining

the various economic systems

throughout Europe. We are focus-

ing on three different economic

systems: traditional, command,

and market. In order to empha-

size the differences between each

system, the students created skits

describing each economic system.

Accessing Blogs

All teacher blogs can

be accessed by visiting

the school website. If you navigate to

www.gscs.org, you can

select Kennedy Road

from the link under

our schools.

On the Kennedy Road

website, hover over

the link for facultyand staff. You may

then click on the link

for 6th grade teach-

ers. On this page, you

will find a link for

each teachers’ email

address and his or her blog. The

blog will give you a daily update of

what is occurring in each class.

6th Grade Mathematics—Coach Sanders & Ms. Evans

To encourage and reinforce good

behavior, 6th grade teachers have

implemented the Stars and Strikes

program. Each class period, stu-

dents have an opportunity to be

chosen as receiving a star or a

strike, based on classroom aca-

demics and performance.

Students who earn stars are given

special incentives, such as a “Fast

Pass,” which allows the student to

jump to the front of the line at

lunch, good behavior celebrations

for up to 15 students, lunch with

the principal, or cougar bucks.

On the flip-side, stu-

dents who receive 3

strikes are put on a be-

havior plan that limits

movement throughout

the day, locker breaks,

and designates the stu-

dent to silent lunch. While stu-

dents can remove strikes by earn-

ing stars, as students earn more

strikes the consequences increase,

which could include a parent con-

ference or having a parent sit with

the student

for part of the school

day.
