Capte'n Dick Lightburne will eulogize her superior ap nointments in point of freight arrangements and passenger comtorts. it grieves us to contemplate the tact tbat we will not commune with the river frater nity any more until Christmas day, tnd it u difficult to conjecture in what condition the fraternity will be on that day. Of course we w.ll give the day the obsei vance it merits. lhe (jiolden ltule passed up at nine o clock last night on ner way to the Ohio wifi as much as she can wag with. Captain Shinkle is del'ghted with the performance of his new boat under tne pressure ot such a load, feue lost forty-eig- ht Eioura on the trip up by foggy weather. The causeway on the levee from Union street to the elevator has become almost im- passable to vehicles, pnd entirely so to pedes trians. Will the authorities ever do any- thing toward repairing tr;s thoroughfare? The flatboats are the principal sufferers, vet they must come down, with the tin for wharf privileges. The A. C. Donnallv. Captain Henry U. Hs"-t- , is due up to-d- ay for the Ohio. A good packet, othcered bv clever gentlemen and ex perienced 8 team boa tmep, she affords splendid facilities to both shippers and travelers. Ed. A. Donnallv. her cb'ef sci.be. will give all particulars at the desk. Captains Washing- ton and Carter, at the Lee wharf boat, are her agents. We learn that Captain J. J. Darragh left Uairo yesterdav tor Memphis with the i'!r nois, and will arrive here morning, leaving tbe name evening tor Arkopous, re suming her regular tnps. Captain Darragh spent nearly five thousand dollars in repair ing her, and has put ner in splendid order, being repainted inside and out. She now presents tho appearance of a new steamer. Major J. A. ilarpham, agent of the board ot underwriters, reports br telegraph Irom Devoirs Blotf, to President F. M. Nelson, that eight hu ndred and seventy eight bales of the cargo ot the Belle of Texas were con signed to Memphis, and of which two hun dred are afloat in the river, one hundred landed on a sandbar, and two hundred are at Augusta. The Belle of Texas will bring to Memphis what she can, and tbe remainder will be brought around on the Hard Cash All of the cotton will be saved. The Thomiis Sherlock, Captain Lew Kates, passes down for New Orleans at ten o'clock this morning with a good trip of both freight and passengers. Little Rock Gazette, Friday: "To-da- y Cap- tain Harry Jabine will stretch a rope across the raging Arkansas at the foot of Commerce Btreet, and will improvise, by the aid of a couple ot pontoon approaches, a ferry to be used unf il Captain John Jabine shall have ar- rived with his new fenboat. Tb'"s will be quite an advantage to the business of the lower end of tho city. The new boat of Harry Lewis, the hull of which was built near Per-rvill- e, is lying at the Little Rock levee, where she has just had a neat cabin put upon her, and now awaits her machinery. Levee gossip reports that she will bear the eupho- nious title of 'Old Aunt Sally.' " St. Louis Republican, Friday: "'Ship- ments to New Orleans are comparatively light," said a boatman yesterday. 'We are (rone np, sure, if we don't get more boats adapted to the trade. Cincinnati has better boats in the trade, and more of 'em.' Per- haps it is so. It seems also, that a portion of the tonnage that St. Louis has is going to abandon her. The City of Alton is now en route from New Orleans to Cincinnati, her owners intending to keep her in that trade; and the Belle of Shreveport is to load at New Orleans for Louisville and Cincinnati. Mr. Stevens, of the Dyersburg, Tennessee, grist and saw-mill- s, writes that the water is low. Whenever there is sufficient water, the Alf. Stevens will come here with a load of lumber." The muddy, slushy, nasty streets present a picture of disgust now, especially when the necessities of Christmas make it compulsory for indulgent papas, doting mammas, loving sisters and brothers, and sentimental sweet- hearts to wade through thick and thin in pur- suit of something to please the dear little ones. When we gaze on the scene, how every tender, every grand sentiment comes reflected back to us from the beautiful conditions and objects of nature that were once within reach of us, and could have been enjoyed, but were not, becouse of our too fastidious natures. If it be bright sunshine, we are apt to wish for rain; and it the rain-dro- patter a soothing lullaby against the pane, we are longing for the genial sunshine; and so the world comes and goes with us. If our natures go with us into the great hereafter, there will be hardly one of us but will want to suggest some im- provement in the architecture of the abode of the saints. Cincinnati Enquirer, Friday: "Last trip up of the Bostona, a young boy (?) was dis- covered hid under the boilers, trying to evade paying passage. After being hauled out, the story told was that he ( ?) wanted to go home, and for the past two months he ( ?) had been deck-sweep- er on the steamer Ex- press. The general make-u- p of the lad ( ?) excited the suspicions of several of the deck crew, who persisted in paying a great deal of attention to the good-lookin- g youth. After a time he t ?) could stand it no longer, and fled to the cabin guards for protection, where the officers of the boat interfered, and after lock- ing the youth np in a state-roo- m, demanded an explanation. After hearing the story of the deck-cre- the MtYiceg of Dr. Harry Bruce were requested, who pronounced the supposed boy to be a female, masquerading in male attire. She told the officers her name was Geprgw Guthrie, and that she had been lhuliceu to leave home by a man named C. A. Knapp, the proprietor of a floating photo- graph gallery. As she expressed a desire to return to her home in Caticttsburg, the off- icers of the Bostona saw that she was safely left at that place. Mis Annie, daughter of Colonel J. W, Silverthorn, river editor of the Evansville Journal, was married last Wed- nesday to Guy W. Ashley, at the residence of the bride' aunt in Farroington, 111. The as groom is connected with the house of Roach tc Westbrcok, of ETantville. Tt te-o- n light at Shawneetown bar, on the Kentucky aide of tho river, will, on Saturday, December 22d, be moved to the clump of trees opposite the wharfboat, in compliance with the in- structions from the light-hous- o inspector." it grieves us to contemplate the tact tbatwe will not commune with the river fraternity any more until Christmas day, tnd it udifficult to conjecture in what condition thefraternity will be on that day. Of course wew.ll give the day the obsei vance it merits.

lhe (jiolden ltule passed up at nine o clocklast night on ner way to the Ohio wifi asmuch as she can wag with. Captain Shinkleis del'ghted with the performance of his newboat under tne pressure ot such a load, feuelost forty-eig- ht Eioura on the trip up by foggyweather.

The causeway on the levee from Unionstreet to the elevator has become almost im-passable to vehicles, pnd entirely so to pedestrians. Will the authorities ever do any-thing toward repairing tr;s thoroughfare? The flatboats are the principal sufferers, vetthey must come down, with the tin for wharfprivileges.

The A. C. Donnallv. Captain Henry U.Hs"-t- , is due up to-d- ay for the Ohio. A goodpacket, othcered bv clever gentlemen and experienced 8 team boa tmep, she affords splendidfacilities to both shippers and travelers. Ed.A. Tb'"s will bequite an advantage to the business of thelower end of tho city. The new boat of HarryLewis, the hull of which was built near Per-rvill- e,

is lying at the Little Rock levee, where she has just had a neat cabin put uponher, and now awaits her machinery. Leveegossip reports that she will bear the eupho-nious title of 'Old Aunt Sally.' "

St. Louis Republican, Friday: "'Ship-ments to New Orleans are comparativelylight," said a boatman yesterday. 'We are(rone np, sure, if we don't get more boatsadapted to the trade. Cincinnati has betterboats in the trade, and more of 'em.' Per-haps it is so. It seems also, that a portionof the tonnage that St. Louis has is going toabandon her. The City of Alton is now enroute from New Orleans to Cincinnati, herowners intending to keep her in that trade;and the Belle of Shreveport is to load atNew Orleans for Louisville and Cincinnati.Mr. Stevens, of the Dyersburg, Tennessee, grist and saw-mill- s, writes that the water islow. Whenever there is sufficient water, theAlf. Stevens will come here with a load oflumber."

The muddy, slushy, nasty streets present apicture of disgust now, especially when thenecessities of Christmas make it compulsoryfor indulgent papas, doting mammas, lovingsisters and brothers, and sentimental sweet-hearts to wade through thick and thin in pur-suit of something to please the dear littleones. When we gaze on the scene, how everytender, every grand sentiment comes reflectedback to us from the beautiful conditions andobjects of nature that were once within reachof us, and could have been enjoyed, but werenot, becouse of our too fastidious natures. Ifit be bright sunshine, we are apt to wish forrain; and it the rain-dro- patter a soothinglullaby against the pane, we are longing forthe genial sunshine; and so the world comesand goes with us. If our natures go with usinto the great hereafter, there will be hardlyone of us but will want to suggest some im-provement in the architecture of the abode ofthe saints.

Cincinnati Enquirer, Friday: "Last tripup of the Bostona, a young boy (?) was dis-covered hid under the boilers, trying to evadepaying passage. After being hauled out,the story told was that he ( ?) wanted to gohome, and for the past two months he ( ?)had been deck-sweep- er on the steamer Ex-press. The general make-u- p of the lad ( ?)excited the suspicions of several of the deckcrew, who persisted in paying a great deal ofattention to the good-lookin- g youth. After atime he t ?) could stand it no longer, and fledto the cabin guards for protection, where theofficers of the boat interfered, and after lock-ing the youth np in a state-roo- m, demandedan explanation. After hearing the story ofthe deck-cre- the MtYiceg of Dr. HarryBruce were requested, who pronounced thesupposed boy to be a female, masqueradingin male attire. She told the officers her namewas Geprgw Guthrie, and that she had beenlhuliceu to leave home by a man named C. A.Knapp, the proprietor of a floating photo-graph gallery. As she expressed a desire toreturn to her home in Caticttsburg, the off-icers of the Bostona saw that she was safelyleft at that place. Mis Annie, daughter ofColonel J. W, Silverthorn, river editor of theEvansville Journal, was married last Wed-nesday to Guy W. Ashley, at the residenceof the bride' aunt in Farroington, 111. The asgroom is connected with the house of Roach tcWestbrcok, of ETantville. Tt te-o- n lightat Shawneetown bar, on the Kentucky aideof tho river, will, on Saturday, December22d, be moved to the clump of trees oppositethe wharfboat, in compliance with the in-structions from the light-hous- o inspector."
