Course Selection 2018-2019

Course Request Materials

You should make sure you have the following materials:

1. 11th Grade Course Request Form (Blue)2. Your Transcript3. 10th, 11th, 12th Grade Elective Course List (Bright Yellow)4. COHS Graduation Requirements (Blue)5. Online Course Selection Instructions6. Your completed Pre Course Selection Worksheet (from previous advo

lesson)

You need to fill out a COHS course request form even if you plan to attend a different school next

year. We will be able to send your course request information to your new school.

To begin, follow the steps outlined below:

1. Fill in your Name and ID # at the top of the form AND along the right side.

2. Fill in your phone number in the event we may need to contact you in the future regarding the courses you have selected.

*means that you must have taken a course prior to enrolling in this course. Look up the course in the online course catalog for the details.

**Requires application, interview and acceptance

**Means that you must fill out an application, interview and be accepted into the program in order to take the class.

Does not meet a-g college eligibility requirementIt may however, meet EGUSD graduation requirements.

Required Courses Section

We will go through the Course Request Form one subject at a time.

You will be selecting 1 course from EACH of these subject categories, unless you have completed your World Language Requirement.

Remember! You will

be enrolled in 80 total

credits divided

between required

courses and electives.

English

Circle one English class:

AP Seminar is an ELECTIVE class. It will NOT take the place of an English 11 course. If you choose AP Seminar as an ELECTIVE, you MUST ALSO choose

AP English 11. If you have any questions about AP Seminar or the Capstone Program, see Ms. Baird (in room HL-7) or your counselor.

OR

**Students who wish to enroll in AP Seminar will need to select “Academic Competition” in the online input screen.

IMPORTANT!

Social Science

Circle one Social Science class:

AP US History has the option of an elective “skills” class that is used to reinforce the AP

concepts taught in the class and to prepare for the AP exam. It is an optional class for those taking

AP US History.

Science and Math go together!

In order to take Chemistry or Physics you should have already taken and passed or plan to take Math II. (see pre-course worksheet)

Criminalistics (non A-G) does not have a math requirement and should be used for students who plan to attend a 2 year college after graduation.

AP Science Notes—Elective Option

AP Biology and AP Chemistry have the option of an elective “support” class that is used to reinforce the AP

concepts taught in these class and to prepare for the AP exam. It is an optional class for those taking AP Biology

or AP Chemistry.

Mathematics

Circle your Math class:

Combo math classes allow you to complete two math levels in one

year. These classes will use 20 of your

available 80 credits.

World Language

If you are currently enrolled in a World Language class and have earned a C or better, you can advance to the next level.

Remember:You might not need to take World Language in the 11th grade.

All students need at least 2 levels of World Language for college (3 levels is recommended)All students need at least 1 year of World Language for graduation.

Combo Spanish classes allow you to complete two Spanish

levels in one year. These classes will use 20 of your

available 80 credits.

**Note: If you choose an academic class that is worth more than 10 credits, it

will reduce the number of electives

you may choose.

Reference the bright yellow elective sheet.

Remember, if you choose a course you may be scheduled into it even if it is your last choice.

If you are in an academy or pathway choose those program electives.

If you are in a program (band, choir, Hype, Yearbook, AVID) choose those as electives.

Please write the name for your elective courses on the elective course lines.

Repeating Classes

If you need to make up grade in a class other than Math or World Language, you will have to repeat the class in Summer School.

Summer School registration will be available at the end of Term 4. Check the COHS website for enrollment form and dates.

Not all classes are offered during Summer School. Class offerings will be listed on the summer school form.

Additionally…

Sign the bottom of your form (Student Signature)

All students should check one of the boxes at the bottom of the form to indicate your current goal after high school. This will help your counselor verify that your courses fit your plan.

Final check…

Is your name, ID#, phone number at the top of your form?

Did you choose a class in each Required Courses category? English

Science

Math

World Language (remember not ALL students need this requirement)

Did you select at least 6 elective options? Did you verify you have met prereqs for all your selections? You will not be placed in a class

for which you do not qualify.

You’re done with the first part!

Give your Advocacy teacher the top copy of your form TODAY.Do not leave advocacy today with both copies of your course form.

Your counselor will keep your paper course selection copy in order to verify your online course selection courses.

Online Course Selection

Between TODAY (February 6th) and Friday, February 16th, you need to log on to StudentVUE and input your classes.

Your course selection options will not be processed until you complete this final step.

You can do this from a school computer or Chromebook or at home anytime during the open window.

*Please note: Wednesday, Feb. 7th counselors will be available until 6pm in order to help parents or students who are not

available during the day.
