Inclusive and Adapted Recreation for People with DisabilitiesIn an effort to meet the needs of the community and in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the CSD wants to ensure that all individuals have access to our programs. Adapted recreation classes and programs are offered through Therapeutic Recreation (page 40). Reasonable accommodations for other CSD programs and activities are available and will be determined on an individual basis. To request an accommodation, mark the “Accommodations Needed” box on the registration form. A coordinator will contact you. To assist us in meeting your request, allow at least two weeks advance notice. For more information or to report concerns, call (916) 405-5600.

Gifts for Tomorrow – Today’s gifts are tomorrow’s treasures. The CSD encourages the improvement of parks through the “Gifts for Tomorrow” program giving citizens the opportunity to provide amenities in neighborhood parks, such as trees and benches. For more information, call (916) 405-5300.

Standards of BehaviorFor the enjoyment and safety of everyone, the CSD expects all participants to treat people and facilities with respect and abide by all rules and direction from CSD staff. The CSD reserves the right to refuse service to anyone for failure to abide by these standards.

Staying Connected to Our Community

We at the Cosumnes CSD are proud of our long-standing history of providing excellent service to our community. The cities of Elk Grove and Galt, as well as areas of Sacramento County, are assured of a Fire and EMS team of professionals who are well trained with state-of-the-art equipment to effectively handle emergencies. Our Fire Department also provides numerous community safety services including car seat inspections, life jacket loan program as well as the Vial of Life program.

In addition to planning, developing, and maintaining 87 parks, our Parks and Recreation Department offers special events and recreational programs throughout the year for children, teens, and adults.

While we are proud of our unparalleled level of service, we need to keep the lines of communication open by making sure you know what we are doing. We want to hear your thoughts and opinions. Visit www.yourcsd.com to give us your input at the “How Are We Doing?” link or call our phone line at (916) 714-PARK.

Our newly-implemented communication tools are examples of ways we are making it easier to keep up with the CSD. You can now follow both the CSD Parks and Recreation and Fire Departments on facebook as well as twitter. The Parks and Recreation Department is celebrating the six-month anniversary of their facebook page with more than 520 followers. Create your CSD moment and become a fan. You will receive periodic updates about recreation and leisure programs, special events, and park happenings.

Not to be outdone, the Cosumnes Fire Department has a robust facebook page and twitter account. In addition to receiving safety tips and other interesting news from Jen’s Journal (Jennifer Rubin, Public Education Officer), the facebook page offers links to local fire-related news. Join their twitter account, which lets you know in real-time where our firefighters are responding.

We also want to remind you that the CSD encourages community members to call our maintenance hotline (916) 405-5688 if you notice any problems at CSD parks. The hotline number is monitored 24/7.

Our ability to provide you excellent service depends on keeping the lines of communication open with you. So let’s get—and stay—connected!

Helpful Hints for Swim Lessons: • Make sure you have selected the

appropriate level for your child. Once registered, you can only transfer classes 72 hours prior to the start day.

• It is recommended that children repeat the last level they completed the previous summer.

• Most children remain in the same level for two or more sessions.

• If unsure of which level your child is in, choose the level you know they can do the skills in (refer to Progress Report on website).

• Have a second and third time choice ready when registering or transferring as classes fill quickly.

• Your child will not be moved to a different level or class if registered incorrectly. You may be asked to leave the class without a refund or credit.

• Remember that both the Jerry Fox Swim Center and Wackford Complex offer swim lessons, so if a class is full at one pool, check the other facility.

• Make sure your child has a swim suit, towel, and plenty of sun block. For children in diapers, swim diapers must be worn in the pool.

• Goggles and swim caps can be worn as well.

• Be on time or early to class.

Candle With CareCandles are a common fixture in our society. Their delightful glow offers warmth and cheer in our busy everyday lives. Candles, however, are perhaps the only uncontrolled open flame device still present in homes today. To enjoy them safely, candles must be used properly—always keeping fire safety in mind. NFPA reports that on average, a candle fire is reported to a U.S. fire department every thirty minutes.

Protect Your FamilyReduce the risk of a fire caused by candles in your home by taking the following safety precautions:• Use flameless candles.

They look and smell like real candles.

• Blow out all candles when you leave the room or go to bed. Avoid candles in the bedroom and other areas where people may fall asleep.

• Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn.

• Use candle holders that are sturdy and won’t tip over easily.

• Put candle holders on a sturdy, uncluttered surface.

• Light candles carefully. Keep your hair and any loose clothing away from the fame.

• Don’t burn a candle all the way down—put it out before it gets too close to the holder or container.

• Never use a candle if oxygen is used in the home.• Have flashlights and battery-powered lighting ready to use during a power outage.

Never use candles.

Smoke Alarm AssistanceWorking smoke alarms are essential in every household. Seniors or other individuals within the Cosumnes Community Services District needing assistance with replacing their smoke detector batteries may contact the Cosumnes Fire Department at (916) 405-7100 or (866) 598-FIRE (toll-free) to arrange for assistance.

Mark Your CalendarsNote the activity times, dates, and locations for courses and events.

Pre-RegisterNothing cancels a class faster than low enrollment. Each class strives for a minimum enrollment level that will cover the costs for instruction and facility use. If you see a class you’re interested in, register early and invite a friend. See registration information (page 53) for ways you can enroll by phone, on-line, at a CSD office, or by fax.

ReceiptsIn an effort to keep costs down, we do not send receipts by mail. Receipts are available at the office by request.

What to bring? What to wear?Read the class descriptions for what to bring or what to wear for fitness, dance, sports, or other

special interest classes. Most descriptions include basic expectations the instructor has for apparel and equipment.

RefundsRefunds are granted to cancellations received 72 hours prior to the first class unless otherwise noted in the class description. Failure to attend a class does not constitute grounds for a refund. If you are not satisfied with a program you’ve attended, please contact the program supervisor.

Waitlist ProcedureAnyone can waitlist at anytime for individual classes. Waitlists are not rolled over from year to year, session to session, or class to class. It is the responsibility of the parent to place their child(ren) on the appropriate waitlist(s). If a client withdraws from a class thus creating an open spot, the first person on the waitlist is called and has 24 hours from the time the call was placed to accept or decline the opening.

AccommodationsTo request an accommodation, mark the “Accommodations Needed” box on the registration form. Please allow at least two weeks advance notice.

Supply FeesSome classes require a supply fee in addition to the registration fee. Supply fees are payable directly to the instructor at the first class meeting, so do not include the supply fee with the registration fee. Supply fees cover the costs for supplies needed to present or produce items in a class, vary, and are included in the class descriptions.

Cosumnes Recreation Opportunity FundWhen registering, add OPTIONAL $1.00 to donate to the Cosumnes Recreation Opportunity Fund, formerly Operation Clyde. See page 54 for more information.

Community & Youth Organizations

The mission of the Elk Grove Food Bank Services is to develop, mobilize and provide community resources to assist our neighbors, promote independence, and preserve dignity in the fight against the many faces of hunger and human need.

Serving the greater Elk Grove community since 1974, EGFBS is a multipurpose 501(c)(3) that operates the only food closet and clothes closet in this area and has developed additional programs to serve the needs of seniors, the medically fragile, farm workers, women, and their children.

The Cosumnes Recreation Opportunity Fund (formerly Operation Clyde Recreation Scholarship Fund) provides assistance for individuals to participate in recreation activities offered by the Cosumnes CSD Parks and Recreation Department. The success of this program has given children and adults in need, lifelong learning experiences that promote healthy lifestyles.

It’s your tax deductible donation that supports our efforts in continuing this program. Just add a $1 to your registration or participate in fundraising events that support the Cosumnes Recreation Opportunity Fund. For more information or an application, please call (916) 405-5300.
