Itʼs service to my own need to feel good. If your heart is calling for you to be gentler with yourself as you go through changes, yelling “Try harder! You can do it!” in your head may not be as helpful as you think. How is the world calling you to be of service? Generosity in Action As many of you already know, an anonymous donor has stepped forward with a wonderful gift. This person will match up to $10,000 (yes, that’s four zeros!) in donations from the congregation to replace the carpeting in Sibley Hall and the entranceway of our building. Any money left over will stay with the capital campaign and be used to do major maintenance on the building. So anything you give through the end of October will be doubled! Please just write “matching gift” on your check or envelope and we’ll make sure the money goes to the right place.

Welcome Fall!

In Service to the WorldOur theme this month is Service

to the World. Now, depending on how you read this, it can feel overwhelming or wonderful. Sometimes, in spite of everything, service to the world feels too big and too hopeless. Thatʼs because weʼre trying to save the world rather than serve it.

Itʼs not our job to save the world. Let me repeat that – itʼs not our job to save the world. The world does not need saving. Thereʼs a story told in a TED talk by Ernesto Sirolli about how he learned how to be of service without imposing any of his own “stuff” on those he was serving. When he first started out, he went to a third world country and taught them how to garden. They had a beautiful garden, although getting participation from the community was hard. And then the season changed,

the garden flooded and a group of hippos came and ate everything overnight. Ernesto noticed that the locals seemed unsurprised. When he asked why they didnʼt tell him that this happened every year, their response was, “You didnʼt ask.” And so the talk was titled, Want to help someone? Shut up and listen!

To be in service to the world – whether itʼs the Divine world that exists within you or the physical world that is all around you – requires that we first get quiet and listen to what is needed. I might be

great at baking bread and want to teach you how to do it. However, if you donʼt like bread, or canʼt eat it, it is not actually service to you when I teach that. Itʼs service to my own need to feel good. If your heart is calling for you to be gentler with yourself as you go through changes, yelling “Try harder! You can do it!” in your head may not be as helpful as you think.

How is the world calling you to be of service?

Generosity in ActionAs many of you already know, an anonymous donor has stepped forward with a wonderful gift. SeptemberBirthdays

Back to SchoolSeptember means Labor Day,

back to school, the beginning of the end of summer and the autumnal equinox all rolled into one very eventful month. A new slate of classes is being offered at the Center and it is a good time to rebuild your Foundation of Science of Mind with some personal growth. I have taken Foundations with three different teachers, learning something new from each experience.

Somehow I have been out of town for our monthly Leadership meetings on the first Sunday of the month. I will be back for the September 4th meeting and hope that you will join our circle to learn about the many interesting activities happening. Examples include Landscape, Hospitality, Youth, Volunteer Coordinator, Building Facilities, Bookstore, Office and more! One of the newest areas we would like to bolster is our Cyber outreach. This includes Facebook, Twitter and other on-line social

media outlets where increasingly, people are discovering Science of Mind. Do you enjoy email, posting tweets or little stories, grabbing an occasional photo on your phone? If so, ask one of the board members or Eileen about how you can join in the fun.

The fall also is a time to harvest from the summer; have you noticed how green the fields are after the monsoons. The earth loves to grow if it is just offered a little water. Likewise we see the Center blossoming with new people stopping in to learn about our philosophy. Join me in welcoming visitors; you can be a spokesperson telling about your experiences and changes observed.

The best way is still word of mouth so as we go about our lives in the world, that “presence” seeing the good in people can be contagious. Someone will notice and you can proudly say “I learn this on Sundays at the Center for Spiritual Living across from Embry-Riddle out on Willow Creek; come join us. We welcome everyone as we see the “world that works for all of us.” Watching the Olympics has been a wonderful example of seeing people from all over the world focus on excellence. It is an inspiring event demonstrating the thousands of years that we have sought the best for all willing to reach for their dream.

Thank you for shining your light, it brightens the world.

– Dr. Jon C. Haass2016 Board President

YOUTH AND FAMILY MINISTRY

4

Anattitudeofgratitudeismostsalutary,

andbespeakstherealizationthatweare

nowinheaven.–ErnestHolmes

Right now kids are in a big transition, starting their new school year with new teachers, classrooms, and peers. Transition is an important part of life for kids and adults alike; it means letting go of the old ways of doing something and trying something new as a way to grow and learn. The Youth and Family ministry is also in transition. We have recognized the need to move away from the director as a volunteer and into a true job at the center. We

know that this is exactly what is needed so the necessary time and energy can be put into the program for it to grow. While this transition may take some time as we hammer out the details, we will continue to offer a high-quality and love-based curriculum for any child who wants to join us on Sundays.

For the rest of the month we will be learning from nature. What “God qualities” can we find in plants and animals? How can we integrate

the principles of nature into our lives? On the last Sunday we spend the day outside connecting with nature and each other at a garden party. Spread the word!

In September, we will shift our focus to service. The children will learn about people who have “stuck

their necks out” in service of the world, especially when it wasnʼt required. Then we will begin to develop a service project of our own so we can give back to the community as a whole.

We promise to keep you updated as new and wonderful things unfold. And if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

With love and joy,Erin Smith

PRACTITIONER'S VIEWPOINT

“For it is in giving that we receive” – St. Francis of Assisi

“Petting emergency!! Petting emergency!!” My cat Sweetie seems to have this experience daily, generally when I’m sitting in front of the computer, trying to get work done. She’s not shy in letting me know either, jumping up on the desk, swishing her tail in front of the screen, unshaken in her confidence that there is joy in giving (me) and there is joy in receiving (her).

As I stroke her silky fur, I reflect on this month’s theme on service. Whether it’s petting a cat or volunteering to take on a task, each of us every day serve, giving our unique gifts that only we can give.

Each day Life invites us to give of ourselves – to our family, our friends, our work and our community.

But the larger question for many is, “How may I spiritually serve?”

We are expressions of God’s presence; God’s DNA is our DNA, divine nature and action. Within ourselves, beams of God’s love and light shine brilliantly through, reflecting the essence of who we truly are. To spiritually serve is the greatest gift of all. Molly Parkes, a Usui Reiki/Seichem Master, suggests some ways in how to go about it:• Honor the uniqueness and energy in every living

thing.• Act honorably and use gentle regard without

judgment.• Realize that the personal journey of all is a

unique process perceived from their own perspective which is their growth path to a higher consciousness.

• Find the positive in each situation.• Walk through fear and judgements.• Welcome change as an opportunity.• Take responsibility for your actions.• Use the power of intention and positive

thought.• Do not intrude on anyone’s free will.• Balance receiving and giving.• Self-empower people in their path of self-

discovery.• Use kindness. • Understand that we are all one.• Understand that everything has value.• Come from love in all things. As we work to create light for others, we naturally light our own way. - Mary Anne RadmacherNamasté, Hazel Bowman, RScP

VISITATION MINISTRYDuring the month of July, 2016, 11 team members reported

visiting (actual or telephone) 11 separate individuals. A total of 26 visits were made. Team members held three separate individuals in Virtual Prayer during a medical procedure they were having. A Virtual Prayer Circle is where each member goes into prayer at a designated time, wherever they are, for an individual undergoing a medical procedure.

Would you like a visit, telephone visit, Prayer Circle or Virtual Prayer Circle by the Visitation Team for yourself or another? The team will, upon request, provide food and transportation where needed for those being visited. If this is for you, please contact the Pastoral Care Coordinator, David Sharer, RScP at (928) 771-2791. The team loves to serve by making visits and praying with you.

Love & Light,David Sharer, RScPPastoral Care Coordinator

I AM ALWAYS GLADI will be light-hearted as a bird

and live with God.– Emerson

I sing a song of joy today, of praise, and gratitude. I know that my health, my physical well-being, my mental poise and peace are drawn from the infinite Source. Today I know that the healing presence of Life is within me, forever restoring my mind and body. Body and mind are one in Spirit. Physical health is a state of wholeness in mind, as well as in body. My body is a servant of the Spirit within me. My mind is an offspring of pure Spirit. There is a silent reaction going on between the Spirit within me, which is God, my mind, which receives impressions from this Divine Source, and my body, which is the servant of the Spirit. Today I hold communion with the invisible Presence that peoples the world with the manifestation of Its Life, Its Light, and Its Love. I withdraw the veil that hides my real self and draw close to the Spirit in everything and in everyone. I anticipate everything that is worthy of the soul; I accept everything that belongs to the Spirit; I claim everything that partakes of the nature of the divine Reality.
