CORTICOBULBAR TRACT

IT IS COMPOSED OF THE FIBERS THAT pass from the motor cortex to motor neuron in the trigeminal ,facial and hyoglossal nuclei.

Cortibulbar neuron end either directly on the cranial nerve nuclei or on their antecedent interneuron within the brain stem.

Their axon travels through the genu of the internal capsule the cerebral peduncle to descend with corticospinal tract fibers in the pons and medulla

Corticobulbar tract neuron are pyramidal shape and located in layer v of the cerebral cortex.

The cortical areas from which these tracts originate were identified on the basis of electrical stimulation that produced promt discrete movement.

The pyramidal tract fiber to the motor cranial nuclei(particularly v,v//, x//) contitute the corticobulbar tract.

FUNCTIONS OF CORTICOBULBAR TRACTS.

Responsible for voluntary control of muscles of larynx, pharynx, palate, upper and lower face, jaw, eye etc.

Pseudobulbar palsy is a condition resulting in paralysis or weakness of the muscles which conrol swallowing, talking, tongue and lip movements due to bilateral lesion of the tracts.
