This is a matter neither of oversight nor prejudice. It is the contingent effect of a conjuncture' (1982: 14). Burgin explained that work such as Laura Mulvey's on film, or Griselda Pollock's on painting, was not specifically photographic and Jo Spence's photographic work be- longed to a different cultural- political project. None the less, he acknowledged the importance of the women's movement's insistence on the politics of representation. The particular historical con- juncture which marked the publi- cation of Thinking Photography was the post-68 emergence of a critical photographic practice and criticism which was theoretically informed by Marxism, structuralism and psycho- analysis. Thinking Photography made available to photographers and cultural historians new perspec- tives which radically challenged tra- ditional understandings of the medium. 'Radical cultural practice of the seventies seemed to experience the weight of regulative ideological power in cul- ture and hence felt the need to prac- tice a negative deconstructive aes- thetic as a strategy of resistance.' (Pollock in Tabrizian, 1990) But by the eighties what had emerged was something 'less disciplined by a prac- tice of disidentification and negation and more willing to address the power of fantasy and the destabilis- ing force of pleasure.' (Pollock in Tabrizian, 1991) Correct Distance offers a map of the ways in which the debate on sexual difference and photographic practice developed during the eight- ies. It is through this broader femin- ist project, with its emphasis on the sexual politics of representation and the questions of desire and pleasure, that the work should be read. The eighties saw an explosion offeminist cultural publishing which has made work more widely available. One of the most significant contributions of feminism has been the refusal to accept traditional disciplinary boundaries. duced (and only has meaning in re­lation to the term 'man'). Thus Mitra Tabrizian's work draws upon the conventions of photography and film, on popular and mass culture, on semiological, structuralist, psycho­analytic as well as feminist theories.

If, since the 1980s, psychoanaly­sis has had particular importance for feminism, then it is firstly because of the realization that the view of femi­ninity as either biologically deter­mined or simply socially constructed was inadequate. The unconscious, like the term 'difference', represents a space between the biological and the social which is not reducible to either. Secondly, as Victor Burgin has said elsewhere, the whole point about ideology is that it is not a matter of false consciousness, nor even a matter of consciousness. Ideology is profoundly unconscious. In this volume, five pieces of work are reproduced which trace these debates. The first two, 'College of Fashion' (1980-1) and 'Governmen­tality' (1981-2), represent an in­vestigation into fashion and adver-

tising as two of the primary sites for the construction of gender and sub­jectivity. Both use black-and-white documentary photography but the images are accompanied by text drawn from different discourses. It is between these two symbolic systems in the space between image and text that meaning is produced: 'represen­tations are neither reducible to a referent outside . . . nor to an origin in a subject.' (Tabrizian, 'Govern­mentality', 1982)

The last two works, 'The Blues' (1986-7), on the complexities of race, gender and class and 'Surveillance' (1988-9), a recent history of Tab­rizian's native Iran, both raise other questions and present perspectives which challenge the dominance of the West. In one image from 'The Blues' entitled 'Double Edge' two men (one black, one white) stand on either side of a door. The black man holds a piece of paper on which is written: 'Your problem is you want to be in two places at once. You want everything the whites have got. And you want to destroy everything the

whites have got. My problem is that I'm the woman of no colour. Does that make us different or the same?' (Tabrizian, 'The Blues', 1987)

The questions of race and his­tory and their complex relation to gender have become increasingly im­portant. The final work, 'Surveil­lance', takes the form of a panorama and, unlike the earlier work which examines a synchronic layering of femininity, it is diachronic in struc­ture.

Pivotal to these arguments, placed between the two sets of ear­lier and later work and providing the book's title, is the centrepiece of the book: 'Correct Distance'.

In 'Correct Distance' (1984-5) the style of film noir with its femme fatale comes to represent an under­world, a dark place, a dark continent: the place of the unconscious and woman. It is also the place where the rigid binary oppositions of male and female have not yet formed. In the fictive space of the cinema, or within the photograph's frame, the specta­tor like the infant can move between active and passive identification. The femme fatale represents a powerful figure both desired and feared. Within the narrative, the price she must pay for both appropri­ating masculinity and reminding the male of his feminine side is that she will be punished, forced to submit to the law and returned to her place within a system of binary opposites.

The problem here is precisely one of achieving the 'correct dis­tance': 'far enough not to awaken the man's secret and dangerous identifi­cation ... yet close enough not to let the feminine side be forgotten' (Tab­rizian, 'Correct Distance', 1985). This also takes us back to the open­ing page ofTabrizian's book where a quote taken from Levi-Strauss's Structural Anthropology appears: 'It would be better if you went upstream and built your own village, for our customs are somewhat different

from yours. Not knowing each other's ways, the young men might have differences and there would be wars. Do not go too far away, for people who live far apart are like strangers and wars break out be­tween them. Travel north only until you cannot see the smoke from our lodges and there build your village. Then we will be close enough to be friends and not far enough away to be enemies.' (Levi-Strauss, 1972: 254-5) It is the symbolic- culture, language, representation - which places us in relation to others and which gives us a sense of place in the world and the ability to speak and be understood by others.

While in Correct Distance the reference is primarily to the differ­ence between men and women, it stands as a metaphor for all differ­ence - cultural, sexual and racial. It is a testament to the need for the other and, as the unconscious con­stantly reminds us, the other is not only outside, elsewhere, but within ourselves.

Within feminist practice the question of distance and closeness, the need for analytic frameworks while not rejecting 'the feminine side', remain urgent political issues. In the no man's land between the two camps, feminism has sought to chal­lenge those binary oppositions which have constrained us within all too narrow definitions of what it means to be a woman and, more import­antly, have constrained us all- men and women- within too narrow defi­nitions of what it means to be human.
