Cornwall School Aged Immunisation Pathways for the 2019/20 academic year

Introduction

This information is aimed to support local practices in understanding school aged immunisations, including changes to the schedule. This information includes:

• An overview of arrangements in your local area • A practice checklist to help understand your responsibilities • Childhood flu pathway • HPV pathway • MenACWY pathway • Td/IPV pathway • Birth dates and year groups • Useful links and contacts

• Influenza: Reception to year 6 • HPV dose 1: Year 8 girls and boys • HPV dose 2: Year 9 girls only this year • Men ACWY: Year 9 • Td/IPV: Year 9

GP checklist

Check that all data on immunisations delivered by the school age immunisation

provider that has been sent to you has been uploaded onto your GP practice patient records.

Check that all data on immunisations you have given in your practice has been sent to the Child Health (CHIS) team. This includes any vaccination from the routine schedule given as a travel vaccination. If you are unsure, send it again or contact the Child Health (CHIS) team to discuss this with them.

You will receive a summary report of any year 10 students who have any routine immunisations outstanding. These children will receive a letter from CHIS asking them to make an appointment with their GP practice.

Review how young people are invited for vaccinations at your surgery and whether this meets their needs. Points to consider:

• Are the sessions outside of school hours? • Can the young people get to your surgery for the appointments? • Consider evening or weekend sessions for parents to be able to attend

appointments too. • Are you sending patient information leaflets (PILs) to ensure young

people are aware of what they are being invited for? • Are you using text messaging reminders?

Make sure you are promoting school aged immunisations through leaflets,

posters and through links on your website.


Vaccination process for HPV

The vaccine will be offered to boys, in addition to girls, in school year 8 (12–13year olds) as part of the school-aged immunisation programme from 1 September 2019. There is no HPV catch up for boys, boys are only eligible in year 8.

Year 8 Children, both boys and girls will be invited to attend a vaccination session for their first HPV dose using information from CHIS. If they miss this session, they will be invited to a mop-up session by the school aged

immunisation provider

Any year 8 child who misses HPV will be called to a mop-up session

run by the school aged immunisation team. If a child can’t be vaccinated by the immunisation team they can receive vaccination

at their GP practice

Information passed to CHIS

Year 9 girls will be invited to attend a vaccination session for their second dose using

information from CHIS. If they miss this session, they will be invited to a mop-up session by the school immunisation team. If a girl has received no HPV

vaccine the school aged immunisation provider will try to deliver both dose during

year 9

Child misses HPV

Any year 9 child who misses HPV vaccination will be called

to a mop-up session run by the school aged immunisation

team. If a child can’t be vaccinated by the

immunisation team they can received vaccination at their

Year 10 and older Children will receive no further invitation from the school age immunisation providers. It is the responsibility of GP Surgeries to Opportunistically complete any incomplete HPV

schedules

INCREASE IN UPPER AGE LIMIT OF HPV VACCINE FOR GIRLS AND YOUNG WOMEN In January 2019, the GPC (General Practitioners Committee) agreed to an increase in the upper age limit of the HPV vaccine, so girls and young women can opportunistically access the vaccine free of charge in general practice if they have missed the vaccinations through the school-based programme. From 1 April 2019, GPs will be re-reimbursed for vaccinating young women (over the age of 18 up to 24 years & 364 days). This will help to further reduce cervical cancer, and rarer HPV-related cancers, such as anal cancer, genital cancers and cancers of the head and neck.

Older groups eligible through opportunistic vaccination Provide Men ACWY vaccination to eligible students on an opportunistic basis or who self-present at the GP practice; unless immunisation is contraindicated. Eligible patients are those who: i. are attending university/further education7 for the first time at the time of

vaccination, ii. are aged 19 years on 31 August 2019 iii. Patients eligible from August 2015 remain eligible up to the day before their 25th

birthday), iv. are vaccinated at any time during the period 1 April 2019 to 31 March 2020; The

patient must be under the age of 25 years at the time of vaccination.


Vaccination Process for Td/IPV (Teenage Booster)

Year 8 or Younger children should be not routinely

offered vaccination until they have reach Year 9 where this will be offered by the school

age immunisation team. Td/IPV should ideally be

given 10 years after the first booster (around 13 years 4

months.) However, there may be circumstance where

young people require this before year 9
