Pardon Our Dust: WRVO Public Media, Under Construction

- Michael S. Ameigh, General Manager, WRVO Public Media

Summertime, and the livin’ is easy. Well, maybe for Porgy and Bess, but not for WRVO staff. A major renovation of technical systems that has been underway since early this year really got rolling over the summer. We replaced 35-year-old guy wires on our main tower at Oswego and installed new systems for downloading and streaming programs, managing membership data and organizing news content. And, we updated our website to provide a higher degree of interactivity and functionality. Many of these changes required hours of staff planning and training. Our goal is to bring all our technical systems up to industry standards before the end of the year.

You will notice we have adopted the name WRVO Public Media. While our network of broadcast stations continues to be our primary means of distributing programs, many WRVO members listen on digital devices - iPhone and Android smartphones, iPads, as well as desktop and portable computers. In fact, two of our program streams, WRVO-2: Public Radio Remix and WRVO-3: WRVO International, are only available online and on mobile Wi-Fi devices (WRVO-2 is available on broadcast HD channels in the Oswego and Syracuse areas).

Our updated name reflects the reality that many listeners are shifting to new ways of receiving our signal. There is an emerging generation of media consumers that rarely if ever listens to conventional radio. Because WRVO Public Media is committed to serving listeners wherever they may be, we will continue to diversify our platforms.

I am delighted to report that WRVO recently partnered with Syracuse Opera to bring four extraordinary artists to the far reaches of our coverage area for live performances. Standing ovations and shouts of ‘Bravo!’ punctuated performances at the Clayton Opera House, Earlville Opera House, Smith Opera House in Geneva, and in Oneida and Utica. Thanks to those of you who came by. I very much enjoyed meeting you and hearing your comments about WRVO. WRVO Public Media partners with many arts organizations in an ongoing campaign to get the word out that our region is home to many cultural and artistic treasures. Let’s all support them.

And, please note that Fergus Nicoll, distinguished international journalist and commentator on The World Today, the most listened to program on the BBC World Service, will be our guest October 10th as moderator of a WRVO Community Forum at City Hall Commons in downtown Syracuse. Listener feedback indicates BBC World Service broadcasts are increasingly popular with you, our listeners, and we are grateful to Public Radio International (PRI) for funding Mr. Nicoll’s visit. The forum is being held in conjunction with Caravanserai, a week-long series of events at SUNY Oswego featuring performances and lectures on Islamic art and culture.

Finally, I want to thank you for your ongoing financial support. We are here because you make that possible. Please renew your pledge this month and help strengthen this critically important service to the Upstate New York region.

Two SUNY Oswego students spent the summer working with WRVO staff to advance new initiatives. Adam Wolfe and Leah Landry were awarded summer-long stipends by the SUNY Oswego Summer Scholars Program. Adam worked with New York Sea Grant staff to prepare environ-mental reports. Leah worked to promote WRVO's new smartphone and iPad apps that allow access to WRVO pro-gram streams from anywhere Internet and mobile Wi-Fi are available. Adam and Leah presented posters describing their accomplishments during a summer scholars event on the SUNY Oswego campus September 9th.

WRVO's list of summer projects included the launch of the WRVO Discovery Tour, a periodic series of excursions to exciting destinations around the region. On July 19th more than 50 opera fans boarded the first WRVO discovery tour to the Glimmerglass Festival near Cooperstown for a stunning performance of Bizet's famous opera Carmen. The trip included a backstage tour, private preview, catered lunch, and seats at the matinee performance. A second sold-out tour to Glimmerglass Festival August 15th enjoyed the classic Broadway musical Annie Get Your Gun starring Deborah Voigt. A third excursion, to the Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute in Utica, included a private tour of 'Wedded Perfection,' a widely acclaimed traveling exhibit featuring 200 years of wedding gowns from the collection of the Cincinnati Art Museum.

Planning is underway for the first-ever WRVO seven-day Autumn cruise scheduled for September 8-14, 2012. Passengers will board the elegant Caribbean Princess in New York, sail to Halifax, Nova Scotia, then stop at St. Johns, Bar Harbor, Boston, and Newport on the return to New York. Passengers will have the option of roundtrip transportation by tour bus

from Syracuse. This is a great opportunity to get connected with WRVO. We’re planning on-board lectures and other events of particular interest to fans of NPR and other public radio programming. The WRVO Fall cruise, like the Discovery Tour series, is a fundraiser for WRVO technology support. As we indicated in the last newsletter, recent federal budget legislation in Congress eliminated the long-time Public Telecommunications Facilities Program (PTFP) that has provided matching funds for transmitter maintenance and upgrades for most public broadcast stations for many years. A portion of the all-inclusive per person cabin fee will be a tax deductible donation to the WRVO technology fund. Mark your calendar now for September 8-14, 2012, and watch WRVO.org for more details.

SUNY Oswego Summer Scholars Make a Positive Difference at WRVO

The New York State Broadcasters Association recently honored WRVO for two outstanding public affairs programs aired during 2010. One, a Community Forum on the science of hydrofracking recorded at the SUNY Oswego Metro Center in Syracuse in 2010, won in the category ‘Outstanding Public Affairs Program or Series.’ The second award was for a feature story on the health risks of eating too many fish. That story won in the category ‘Outstanding Feature Story.’ The awards were presented to WRVO Public Media General Manager Michael Ameigh by NBC News anchor Brian Williams during the annual NYSBA meeting in Lake George, N.Y. June 27th.These honors capped an extraordinary year in which WRVO received a total of nearly 30 awards from the Syracuse Press Club and the Associated Press of New York State. Particularly notable is the Steve Flanders Award, a tribute to the radio station in New York State that received the most first place awards for news and public affairs coverage.
