For Want of a Nail – Part 1
For want of a nail the shoe was lost; For want of a shoe the horse was lost. For want of a horse the rider was lost; For want of a rider the message was lost. For want of a message the battle was lost; For want of a battle the kingdom was lost. And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.
That fable shows us how even the smallest, tiniest of things can have huge consequences. Because one little nail was missing, that in turn led to the loss of a kingdom. The fable is expressed in the negative – it considers only what was lost. But we can see it also in the positive: even the smallest, seemingly most insignificant things can have great consequences beyond our imaginations, beyond the scope of our vision.
What may be the first instance of evangelization in the history of the Church is when John, Andrew and another disciple met Jesus and stayed with Him for a while. Then Andrew went and found his brother Simon, and introduced him to Jesus. That’s pretty much how evangelization works. We come to know Christ, and then we bring others to meet Him as well. And what was the first thing that happened next when Jesus met Simon? He changed him. At first in name only, but then as we all know, Peter went on to become the first Pope. From this small, simple act of a man introducing his brother to Jesus, the eventual consequence was the Papacy of the Catholic Church. Like the taking of two loaves and a few fish, and feeding 5000 people, or taking twelve Apostles and creating the Catholic Church that has lasted for 2000 years, the Lord has a way of taking something small and converting it into something grand.
Currently in the Catholic Church we have what is called the New Evangelization. We are each called upon to evangelize and bring others into the Church. Some may think that means we all have to be evangelists and we have to stand on street corners handing out tracts, and we have to ask people about their faith and urge them to become Catholic.
Maybe. For one thing, there is no one way to do evangelization, but many ways. Not everyone can do certain things. Some of us just cannot confront others about something as sensitive and personal as God or the Church or faith. Some people can do that. Others have access to greater ways and means of reaching out to others to invite them to meet the Lord. There are authors, professional speakers, bishops, the Pope. And there are people who are gifted to do one on one personal evangelization.
Not all of us are called and gifted in the same way. But we are all called to make the Lord known.
It begins with a disposition of the heart, an attitude, a willingness to serve the Lord and submit to Him. The basis of our relationship with God is not a performance that we do. The basis of our relationship with God is love, the love of a Father and his beloved children. The Holy Spirit is the one doing the performing in evangelization. Our part is to cooperate, and again, we cooperate in different ways according to our gifts.
We see an instance of this in Samuel who says, “Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.” Samuel offers his attention and his service to God. God does the rest and makes Samuel a prophet. Samuel went on to anoint Saul, the first King, whose son was David, with whom God made a covenant of an everlasting Kingdom, the throne to which Jesus, the Son of David ascended and from which He reigns for eternity. Pope Francis calls the church to be permanently in mission. He calls for everyone to be a missionary. We can participate in the mission through prayer; an hour of adoration.
This hour is a great and unrepeated opportunity for a young parent or grandparent to teach their tender lambs our faith and reverence to our most humble Majesty, The Good Shepherd Jesus. Please join us in just one hour of adoration a week out of nearly 124 weekly hours to choose from.
An adorer is needed for:
Friday 12:00 midnight—1:00 a.m.
If you are able to help with this time, please call Veronica Fabro at (830)377-9117.
viernes 12:00 media noche—1:00 a.m.

narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. The new
librarians, Doug and Deborah Harris, are putting our
collection of books by Fulton Sheen in the narthex to
start 2019, and gave me an interesting article by Joseph Pronechen. Here is the second installment:
First Three Falls and Rises
The first time the Church was in dire straits was in
the fall of Rome, the first 500-year period. It had a
rebirth when great saint missionaries like Augustine in
England and Patrick in Ireland spread the faith.
Then came a second “decay” around the year 1,000
with the Moslem invasions and the split of the Church
with a schism in Constantinople.
“It seemed to be the end of everything. And then
we came to life again,” Sheen said.
In the third 500-year period he said the Church
became “rotten” as nuns and priests were defecting.
Then came the reformers who “almost always reform
the wrong things. And they began reforming the faith,
and there was nothing wrong with faith — it was the
morals that needed to be reformed. It’s not renewal —
it’s really a moral reformation that is needed today,
too.” Remember, that was 44 years ago.
All the more so in our day. On just one point, how
many listened to, and took to heart, Humanae Vitae?
Even theologians defected from it.
After that period the Church came to life again,
Sheen said
“And now we’re at the fourth period, and we’re
rotting — we’re spoiled — no great zeal, no great
learning, no great fire.” Yet there’s hope because
“anyone who knows history is not particularly
disturbed.”
Church’s Enemies
“But the enemy in each of the 500-year periods has
been separate and distinct,” he continued. “We had,
and here I am speaking generally of enemies within the
Church, in the first 500 years, false doctrine centering
around the person of Christ…the Christological
heresies. So the Church was just split open, and that
was one of the reasons that made it possible for the
Moslems to develop.”
The next period saw attacks on the head of the
Church, leading to the Eastern Church breaking away.
By the 16th century the attack was on “the body
of Christ, the mystical body, the Church.” It was
Reformation time.
