Meet Illustrator Chris RaschkaNational Library Week, which runs
from April 8 to 14 this year, has thetheme ''You belong@ your library."
Into the artsChris practiced the viola so much
that he injured his hand. He thenworked for an attorney to supporthimself. He started illustratingfor a law magazine and then fornewspapers. On his own, he keptwriting and illustrating picture books.
"Throughout all my days in schooland after school," Chris said, "I wasmore involved in music and art." Henever imagined he could do thesethings for a living.
The Caldecott Medal is presentedeach year to the illustrator otthe most distinguished picturebook for children.
Chris Raschka won this year'sCaldecott Medal for "A Ball for Daisy."Chris has illustrated about 50 books,many of which he also wrote ..He alsowon the Caldecott Medal in 2006 for''The Hello, Goodbye Window."Career change
Chris studied biology in college,planning to work in animal behavior.He took a year off school to work withphysically disabled kids in Germany."Iwas so changed and moved
by that year of work that I was nolonger so eager to continue in animalstudies," Chris said. He decided tobecome a doctor.
Chris Raschka,53, and his wife, Lydie,have a 16-year-old son, Ingo. His wife is afreelance wr.iter whom he met in art classin college. They live in New York City witha cat named Apollo and an aquarium full ofsnails.

Some favorite thingsColor: "I like a mixture of yellow
and purple, which gives you a kindof warm gray. Ilike those kinds ofgrays you get when you mix opposites.Sometimes you can see that color in aleaf in the fall."

Changing careers once moreBefore starting medical school, Chris
and his wife worked at a home forphysically handicapped kids in theU.S. Virgin Islands.
By the time this job was over, Chrishad decided he would rather be apainter than a doctor.
He didn't make a living with artright away. At first, he supported hispainting career by playing viola insmall orchestras.
In "A Ball for Daisy,"a big dog takes '-"-::-"FI"' ....away a little dog'sball. Chris got theidea from a timewhen his son was 4years old and a dogstole his son's ball.

~M Rookie Cookie's RecipeV-Healthy Oat Bran Cookies
You'll need:• 1314cups oat bran• 1 cup whole-wheat flour• 3/4 cup quick-cooking oats• 1 cup dried cranberries• ] cup chopped pecans• ] teaspoon baking sodaWhat to do:1. In a large bowl, combine oat bran, flour, oats, cranberries, pecans, baking
soda and sp ices. .2. In a smaller bowl, beat together brown sugar, egg whites and margarine.
Acid, milk to mix well,3. Stir wet mixture into oat mixture and blend thoroughly.4. Coat cookie sheets with cooking spray and measure dough by rounded
teaspoons about 1 inch apart5. Bake at 350 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes until done. Makes 3 to 4 dozen.You will need an adult's help with this recipe.

Jack said two things made himwant to become a writer: reading andhis family of storytellers.
"When I read a good book, it sortof infected me. It took me over," hesaid. "Books really stuck with me. 1was aware of this as a young boy.
"I didn't come from a literary*family, but from a family of goodtalkers and storytellers. People whotalked well were always listened toand given a certain elevated status."
When he was in elementary school,he said, "1 started to take stabs atwriting."• "Uterary" means related to literature, orbooks.
Jack Clantos,. 60, and his wife, AnneLower, have a 15-year-old daughter,Mabel. Anne works in public relations.They have two cats and live in Boston.
Keeping a journalWhen he was in elementary school,
Jack began keeping a journal.Because he wanted to keep hisprivate writing secret in middleschool, he made matchbox diaries.
He said; "Iwould take matchboxes,throw the matches away, and cutlittle pieces of paper to slide intothe matchbox. Kids would see memessing ..,vithmatches, and I lookedmore like a firebug than a ,,-rriter."By high school, nobody cared that hewas writing in a journal.
He urges all kids to journal. ''Thejournal is kind of a paper mirror,"he said. ''When you take the time towrite, you take the time to reflect."Journaling will help you betterunderstand what you are like inside.
Advice to kids"All kids need to have a bookshelf
