May is here and we have so much happening in this issue. However, May also brings about, a very special day, for mums! There is not a gift in this world, more precious to a mum than the gift of a child.

As a mother now myself, I finally understand what my own mum meant when she would say, When you have a child of your own, you will understand!

At the time I thought, it was just an excuse for not allowing me to do the things I wanted. Now when I repeat the same thing to my son, I know he is thinking the same thing I did, and it makes me smile.

    The love you have for a child is one that could never be compared or explained, however this quote comes close;

Making the decision to have a child its momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.Elizabeth Stone

I would like to wish all the mums and dads, out there a wonderful Mothers Day, and I hope your gift, is a gift of time with your family.

For my own mum, I would like to thank you for all the sacrifices you have made and the love you have always given. You taught me that being a good mum is not about how much you have to give in life, but to give all you do have with a whole heart, and above all else to love with conviction.

    Happy Mothers Day Mummy!

    Enjoy May

    WHAT GRINDS YOUR GEARS?

Charging customers extra to use Eftpos really grinds my gears!I can understand if you want to have a minimum spend for customers to use Eftpos/Credit but charging an extra $0.50 and $1.00 when a customer is buying products from you or has used a service you provide seems unfair.

It might be easier to work out the costs to cover yourself and put into to the price of the product or service instead of charging extra when a customer should be entitled to use Eftpos for free.

KELLI PEIPPO, OWNER, BELOW THE ROOF,

Men wearing singlets that are 5 x to big while at the gym.

    WHAT GRINDS YOUR GEARS?

The first thing that pops in my head when I think about the sentence What Really Grinds My Gears, is the episode from Family Guy, where Peter Griffin has a segment on TV in which he rants about random things that annoys him. Hilarious.

People who feel the need to be rude and insulting to others, really dose grind my gears. Working in the service industry, I often come across this, but I have to say, that I see it more from the people working behind the counters, who are meant to be servicing the clients, than I do from the customers. I think we need to remember that without customers, we wouldnt have jobs, and we are paid to ensure that the client is always happy. If you cant do this, find another job!

Also, when I have to deal with people who pretend to know it all! Even though its not their area of expertise. These people tend to give you allot of free advise even if you dont ask for it. All I would like to say is Thanks but, No Thanks!

    WHAT GRINDS YOUR GEARS?

Being pregnant I find a tone of things grind my gears! However something I have found to really get me going on a rant are how some people work out at the gym. I hate it when you are trying to do a session at the gym and all you can hear is a guy in the background making extremely loud and unnecessary noises when lifting whilst wearing a singlet that is 5 x to big.

Its almost like it is cool to have at least one nipple show at all times especially when at the gym. I have a tone of other gym hates but that is by far the biggest!

    HASTINGs DEERING...PRODUCT, PEOPLE, COMMITMENT

ON HASTINGS DEERINGS COMMITMENT TO GENERAL CONSTRUCTION AND TRANSPORT SECTORS

Hastings Deering Mackay has relocated its General Construction Service and Truck workshop from Hastings Park to a brand-new facility on Turbo Drive, Paget. The highly skilled and passionate team manage the sales, support, rental and maintenance for a large part of the Caterpillar family for customers who are primarily from non-mining related industries such as construction, infrastructure and transport.

The workshop is already attracting attention with its sky-high ceilings and state-of-the-art specialised Caterpillar tooling. The new space is lined with seven bays hosting the latest electronic, manual and computer-generated diagnostics to service everything from on-highway trucks to all sizes of earthmoving and civil construction equipment.

The massive glossy murals lining the back wall of the new workshop reinforce the sheer size and force of the Caterpillar family. And even the smallest of vehicles seems to swallow the maintenance crew working below.

Hastings Deering Construction Manager, Garth Smith, told Core Life the new centre was designed specifically around the needs of customers to ensure they experienced the industry-leading service that Hastings Deering strives to deliver.

We moved into this new facility to provide an opportunity for our civil, construction and truck customers in the area to gain an industry-specific approach to our services, Smith said.

The facility is easily accessible from Turbo Drive and has both a front and back office to ensure all aspects of a customers experience are catered for on-site.

Garth said the maintenance team are highly trained to work on all types of vehicles and machinery, such as small, medium and large Cat construction equipment, as well as Cat on-highway trucks and other makes powered by Cat engines.

Typically, from a construction market point of view, we work with customers from a range of individual businesses and industries. We get to work closely with the owners of the machines and form relationships with them. Thats why its important we have a facility that focuses on and caters especially for the relevant customer.

Garth says Turbo Drive is now a one-stop-shop for customers.

ON HASTINGS DEERINGS COMMITMENT TO GENERAL CONSTRUCTION AND TRANSPORT SECTORS

    GARTH SMITH,

With close to three decades experience with Hastings Deering, Garth Smith is more than qualified to oversee the companys new Paget-based Construction facility on Turbo Drive.

Garth talked of his passion for the Cat brand during a recent tour of the new workshop.

Q: Tell us a bit about your role at Hastings Deering.

A: Im the Construction, Infrastructure and Transport (CIT) Manager and I oversee operations for the area that links markets in Mackay with our CIT facility. We work with vehicles and machines that are involved with various industries including civil and construction, agriculture, marine and power generation. Personally, my career includes both Mining and Construction backgrounds throughout various branches of Hastings Deering.

Q: Whats kept you with the company for 28 years?

A: Quite simply, my passion for our Product, People and Commitment. I have enjoyed the challenges across my career path within the organisation.

Q: Whats your approach to customer service?

A: We know the product. Really, what customers want is after-sales service value and thats where the difference between our competitors and us lies. Our claim to premium service can be justified based on our commitment to everything from sales to technical and after-sales support. We work with all products from any industry - from quarrying and construction to marine, power generation and agriculture.

Q: When youre not talking Caterpillar, where can we find you Garth?

A: On my days off I go back to my home in Airlie Beach. I moved there for a sea change and enjoy spending my weekends with my family relaxing.

    CAT EXCEL IN CUSTOMER SERVICE

  • POINT OF CONTACT MEET THE SERVICE SUPERVISOR

One of the first people on the scene at Hastings Deerings new General Construction Store and Truck Centre is Service Supervisor Marshall Watson.

The passionate people person says working at Hastings Deering is the perfect job for him and the new premises make coming to work all the more exciting

Q: Whats your role at Hastings Deering?

A: Im responsible for the full after-sales experience. I work with customers to support their needs and manage the general construction team.

Q: How long have you been with the company?

A: Ive been with Hastings Deering and this division for five years and before that I worked in the mining industry for about 10 years. Im a diesel fitter by trade and have taken the opportunity to progress through Hastings Deering to a Service Supervisor role.

Q: How does your team support customers in non-mining related industries across the region?

A: We have a highly skilled team who provide an exceptional after-sales experience. Our workshop and field service team spans from Whitsundays to St. Lawrence, and west to Moranbah and Dysart. Our guys live in the towns and are part of these communities, so they are the one-stop Caterpillar shop. That saves them sending the work into town and gives the customer a more personalised service. They are mobile and have fully equipped service vehicles.

Q: What do you think of the new workshop?

A: It separates our business from mining and allows us to focus solely on general construction, infrastructure and transport customers. We think of this new facility like a small family-owned business with the Hastings Deering reputation and the leading brand of earthmoving equipment behind it. Its about personalising service for our customers.

Q: What is something people might not know about you?

A: I raced karts all my life and was a former Australian kart champion. Im also a passionate NQ Cowboys supporter.

With major developments at The Waters - Ooralea and Settlers Rise, Cougar Developments required a complete system for

    completing their projects.

Machine reliability and product support, including machine servicing, gives CD peace of mind regarding their earthmoving

equipment. CD has also invested in the latest AccuGrade 3D GPS Systems, allowing accurate, cost effective site preparation

    and bulk earthworks.

The ten member Field Service team at Hastings Deering spends every day on the road. They are available around the clock, seven days a week, to service customers across the region.

Service Supervisor, Marshall Watson, says the team are the best of the best, with a combined service history of more than 100 years.

We really value the expertise of the guys; four of them have been with the company for more than 15 years, Marshall said.

They are on-call 24 hours a day and are highly trained to service all types of machines outside of the workshop. Were confident we have assembled the right team for this important role.

Marshall says preventive maintenance technicians, based in Mackay and Moranbah, work alongside the Field Service team.

    THE BEST OF THE BEST

When one machine goes down in a one machine operation, it is imperative that the repair process is carried out in a logical, methodical, and timely manner and is done right the first time. A lot of our Construction customers rely on one Cat machine for their sole income stream.

They depend on us to have them up and running quick time, says Peter Simpson, Supervisor for Construction Field Service and Preventive Maintenance (PM).

    PETER SIMPSON, FIELD SUPERVISOR

Q: Describe your role at Hastings Deering?

A: Im the Construction Field Service and PM Supervisor and lead a team of highly skilled and experienced Field Fitters as well as our Preventative Maintenance Servicemen.

Q: How long have you been with Hastings Deering?

A: I have a combined total of 21 years with the company. I started as an Engine Reconditioner in the Rockhampton Branch in the late eighties and then progressed throughout Branches in the Northern Territory and Queensland mainly in field service roles.

Q: Do you have any special interests within your area?

A: I am particularly keen to further develop our marine engine support. We have marinas in Mackay, Abel Point, Port of Airlie and Hamilton Island, all full of Cat powered vessels. We have fleets of tugs and workboats at Hay Point, Abbot Point and Dalrymple Bay and our team of Fitters know these engines intimately. As a qualified Master and marine engine driver myself, I have a deep appreciation that when everything goes south at sea and particularly in heavy weather, the last thing you want to be worrying about is whats going on down in your engine room.

Q: How will the new workshop benefit Field Service Operations?

A: We share a lot of the same customer base. If diagnosis out in the field reveals the need for a major repair, we can assist with recovering the machine and then hand it over to Marshall and his team.

Q: How do you relax after the week is over?

A: If my family and I arent cruising and fishing through the Cumberland or Whitsunday Island groups, youd possibly find me in the kitchen. Im very much a foodie and just love preparing and sharing all manner of fresh Queensland seafood.

    HOUSING:

The number of residential building approvals rose 3% from February, with alterations & additions lending reaching an all-time high. New housing approvals are now averaging 13,000 per month (based on the last three months).

If this trend continues, will see an annualised level of 160,000 starts over the next 12 months.

    NEW SPENDING:

Retail trade rose by 2.5% during the first two months of 2013, making it the strongest start to a calendar year since 2001. The strength in retail activity was broad-based with sales rising in 19 out of the 20 categories.

A word of caution whilst the lift in spending is great news, deep discounting partly contributed to the pick-up in retail activity.

    INTEREST RATES:

The cash rate remained on hold at 3% and for the fourth straight month, but for mine, interest rates are now on hold for the next six months or so. Where they go next will depend largely on the domestic front for new housing starts.

The RBA thinks that the interest rates are historically cheap and to paraphrase, sooner rather than later, lock in your interest rates.

    POPULATION GROWTH:

Australias population growth rose by 102,000 over the last three months to be 382,000 higher than 12 months ago.

New dwelling construction is currently averaging 142,000 per annum which is well below the current population growth of 382,000 & underlying housing demand of about 170,000 per annum.

    HOUSEHOLD WEALTH:

The new financial wealth of Australian households rose by $63 billion last quarter, a record high. Per capita, this equates to $71,430, which is up 22% on this time last year.

Australian households hold $759 billion in cash and deposits, which represents 23% of all household assets. Home buyers are also well ahead in their repayment schedules.

    HOUSE PRICES:

The best news comes last. According to RPData-Rismark, capital city home prices rose 1.3% in March to stand at 2.4% higher than a year ago.

Whilst variable mortgage rates are around 6.45%, our clients are enjoying variable rates as low as 5.43% or fixed two years at 4.99%

We want to make it easy for clients to access our services, said Alicia, business administrator. NB Industries specialises in auto-electrical services, mechanical and fleet servicing, labour hire and spare parts for earthmoving, trucking, agricultural and mining companies.

The Paget workshop was designed to cater to current fleet service customers physically based in the area. Whether you have a small vehicle or a 20-wheel truck, the workshop will be equipped to handle it. We can address mechanical, electrical or any air-conditioning issues and we now offer wheel alignment and diagnostic services, said Michael.

While construction on the Paget workshop was underway, Michael spent the last eight months negotiating with Bosch to become their exclusive Bosch Authorised Service Centre and Bosch battery dealer. NB Industries will be the only service provider in Mackay to roll out the Bosch KTS scan tool, the latest technology in auto electrical and diagnostic fault finding technology.

Im very excited about the Bosch KTS diagnostic tool. Engine faults, ABS issues, airbag faults and more on cars and trucks can be diagnosed via Bluetooth or USB. It communicates with all major car, truck and trailer models and has a 100m range which means you can be driving and someone is behind a laptop diagnosing your fault, said Michael.

In addition to the Paget workshop, NB Industries will continue to run their Rural View workshop for clients based in the Northern Beaches suburbs. What sets us apart is our one-on-one support and integrity, said Michael. We always follow through on our commitments, even if it means we have to put in extra hours.

Putting in extra hours was the norm for Michael and Alicia when they first established NB Industries. These days, the husband and wife team have a toddler and newborn baby at home. Alicia juggles work and home life by writing a daily task list, delegating activities to her team and having set office hours.

CUSTOMER CONVENIENCE IS THE TOP PRIORITY FOR MICHAEL AND ALICIA SELBY OF NB INDUSTRIES. THIS AUTUMN THEYRE OPENING A STATE-OF-THE-ART AUTO ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL SERVICE CENTRE IN PAGET. ITS THE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN THE AREA, SAID MICHAEL, WHO FOUNDED NB INDUSTRIES IN 2005 AFTER EIGHT YEARS IN THE AUTO-ELECTRICAL INDUSTRY.

Whether you are travelling for workdays or holidays, Mackay Airport is committed to providing passengers with the best experience possible as part of your trip.

Between 2011 and 2012, Mackay Airport passenger surveys identified a number of trends. 46% of passengers are travelling for leisure or to visit family or friends, another 44% travel for business with a significant 14% of business passengers being Fly-In-Fly-Out (FIFO) workers. This amounts to more than 160,000 journeys every year undertaken by FIFO workers using the variety of flight schedules to Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and our regional flights up and down the coast.

The Virgin Australia and Qantas guest lounges at Mackay are some of the most popular in regional Australia with regular passengers taking advantage of these services before or after their busy week at work.

While reading your CORE Life Magazine at the airport, keep an eye out for in-terminal competitions where you can win great prizes like motor bikes for you or the kids. Check out the range of newspapers, magazines, books and gifts at Relay; the delicious offerings at Deli Marche and Aromas cafes, grab a beer at the Barra Bar, or a coffee at Lavazza Caf near the baggage carousel.

In 2013 you wont want for options to affordably connect to the Whitsundays or the coalfields. Were pleased to introduce new shuttle connections direct to Airlie Beach. Ocean Breezes departs the airport 2:00pm every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; and Whitsundays 2 Everywhere departs at 12:30pm Tuesday and Thursday, 11:00am Wednesday and 11:45am Fridays. Tell your family and friends to take advantage of the 10 minute free parking in the Short Term car park.

Through the year you will hear more from us at Mackay Airport with announcements in CORE Life of exciting new routes to support leisure, business, visiting friends and family travel, as well as new initiatives we plan on rolling out to reward our regular customers.

  • JCB has introduced its largest wheel loader ever the 467 ZX, featuring a 4.2 metre bucket and weighing 24 tonnes.

Recently weve seen an increase in waste management businesses and a growing focus on recycling waste for roads and other infrastructure related projects, said Greg Sealey, JCB Construction Equipment Australias Materials Handling Product Manager.

Our new 467 ZX wheel loader is not only built to meet this increased capacity with its large bucket and powerful engine, its also designed to last. Prior to its introduction, we undertook rigorous stress testing with 1.2 million cycles completed in the hardest digging and dump conditions.

The 467 ZX wheel loader has been designed from the outset to reduce operating costs. Its optional five speed transmission increases cycle times and reduces fuel costs. An automatic engine shutdown prevents fuel waste

during idling, while the load sensing hydraulics only consume power on demand.

Ease of use and operator comfort adds to the overall package.

The electro-hydraulic multi-lever service controls allow for fingertip control of the bucket, which makes the machine much easier to operate. Ground level access to daily check points and key engine components make it easy to service and maintain the loader.

Exceptional visibility is a feature of the spacious, air conditioned cab while the optional Smooth Ride load suspension delivers a more comfortable working environment.

    WITH THE BAREFOOT FISHERMAN

CORE LIFE CAUGHT UP WITH DAVID HODGE 42, OR BETTER KNOWN TO MANY ANGLERS, AS THE BAREFOOT FISHERMAN, TO DISCUSS HOW HIS PASSION AND LOVE FOR THE SPORT, HAS TURNED INTO A SUCCESSFUL AND FULFILLING CAREER.

Q: Im sure you get asked this all the time, but I have to know, why The Barefoot Fisherman?

A: I suppose it came from years of stalking animals and fish. The fact that I could feel every little twig under my foot made it dead quiet to walk through the bush. Plus I couldnt really afford quality shoes and if I did buy them theyd last a really short time. Just easy and comfortable I guess would some it up.

Q: Fishing is something most men love to do, how did you turn this passion into a successful career?

A: I had no appreciation for money really, and going bush cost bugger all. Eventually I was asked to work on the Super tank. Thats a 14m long fish tank that is seen at many of the expos. After working on that for 4 and a half years, I resigned and started to do demos at the expos and seminars for fishing clubs etc and just loved teaching the art of fishing and also learning from others.

Q: Tell me about the Barefoot Adventure serious, which aired on Foxtel. What did you love most about the experience?

A: Probably being able to show people how easy it really is to get away from the city in a relatively standard 4WD and enjoying the bush and some of the amazing fishing you find along the way.

Q: I hear that you are a master at casting, some would say the best in Australia! Do you have any tips to share?

A: If I had to sum it up in as few words as possible, Id have to say, use a rod that loads under the weight of the lure as you cast. Use a good quality reel, and ensure you wind the lure right up to the rod tip to eliminate any room for error and then its just time on the water and even practicing in the back yard.

Q: Does your family have the same passion for fishing and the outdoors?

A: My boy Tannhym definitely has the same obsession at five but the missus likes Myers [laughs].

Q: What is your favourite style of fishing, and your favourite fishing spot?

A: Definitely casting at big fish close to structures and then trying to get them out, and Id reckon I couldnt go past Cape York.

Q: What are your thoughts on conservation, and the impact this sport has on our environment?

A: Its a touchy one, but extremist Greens just piss me off. I am probably the biggest conservationist you could find, but I love to eat fish that I have caught myself. I kill, bleed and chill them as soon as they leave the water and then put them on an ice slurry. The quality of the flesh is so much better than commercially caught, and I love the hunt. I can choose the size and species of fish I want to eat and release anything that isnt needed immediately for tucker, because long time frozen fish isnt as good on the plate. If we catch 50 fish in a session only a couple of these will be taken for food.

When it comes to the catch and release angler ethics debate, as to whether fish feel pain or not, its just a joke. Depending on the species, theyre diet consists of items that we could never even look at putting in our mouths due to the pain and injury we would suffer. Bream crush and eat oysters, which would be like us chewing on a broken bottle. Nearly every Estuary Cod you catch in a river regurgitates a reasonable mud Crab. I would like to see an extreme Green put one of them in their mouth, but thats just my opinion.

Q: When you arent fishing or travelling the world, what are some of your other passions?

A: Spending time with family either just having a picnic by the water, or 4WD exploring for little remote spots in the bush, to go and fish later.

Q: What is your most memorable fishing moment?

A: Around 10 years ago in Cape York. I cast a lure for the first time on a private properties river and was instantly hit by a small Barra about 60cm. As it was coming in a Bull shark about 5 foot long ate him. I was almost ready to land him and a Croc around 10 or 12 foot long launched off the opposite bank, bolted over and annihilated the shark. To see the pecking order in such a close quarters, crystal clear environment was awesome.

Kevin joined the US Air Force 11 days before 11 September 2001. He has accomplished a lot in the past decade. I earned two degrees, became a Commercial Pilot, travelled the world to places no one would ever think of, and also completed a diesel mechanic apprenticeship, said Kevin.

During his service, Kevin was honoured with the Air Force Achievement Medal and Air Medal for over 350 flights in a combat environment. He was also inducted into Boeings 2,000 hour club.

Up to this day it is very difficult to explain my typical day because there was never one. I remember once saying hi to a neighbour as he left for work on a Thursday morning then once again Sunday night. Within that timespan, I had dinner in Germany, delivered supplies to troops in Afghanistan and walked the beaches of Spain, said Kevin.

Kevin moved to Airlie Beach in late 2011 to start a new life with his fiance, now wife, who had already settled in the area. Within a year he founded Airlie Beach Aviation.

There are already outstanding aviation businesses geared towards tourism in our area. I would like to focus more on our local community. By June our CASA-approved flight simulator will be installed and ready for training our future Airlie Beach pilots, said Kevin.

Kevin grew up in Trinidad, the southernmost island in the Caribbean, and spent his school holidays in New York. As a U.S citizen living in Trinidad, New York was somewhat home since my mother and sister lived there, said Kevin.

Soccer was a major part of Kevins youth. Although Kevin was selected for the Trinidad national soccer team, he was not able to play. My dad was in favour of me getting educated first and worrying about soccer later, said Kevin. I thank him for that. Im enjoying being a pilot first.

KEVIN ALEXANDER, NEW PROSERPINE UNDER 8S SOCCER COACH AND FOUNDER OF AIRLIE BEACH AVIATION, HAS THREE PASSIONS: FLYING, TRAVEL, AND SOCCER.

Kevin was excited to accept the opportunity to coach the Under 8s team. The age group is prime for development in all aspects of the sport. They are already great players but at the same time they are very receptive to new techniques, said Kevin.

    LUCKY FIFTEEN TATTOO STUDIO EMERALD

Over the past 10 to 15 years a significant change in public perception, social acceptance, stringent regulatory requirements and studio design has led to a far greater acceptance by the wider community who are having incredible tattoo artwork carried out in state of the art tattoo studios.

Driven by a long standing desire to see the industry, and its overall acceptance grow and flourish, the new owners of the Lucky Fifteen Tattoo studio in Emerald embarked upon a mission to create such a state of the art facility offering excellence in artwork, application and surroundings. Premises offering tattoo and body piercing facilities should be designed around cleanliness, relaxation, comfort and privacy for the customer and this was a key factor in determining the interior design and functionality of the studio, said Kerrie Trimmer, Manager of the Lucky Fifteen Tattoo Studio in Emerald.

More than often a persons first tattoo will be something of significant importance to them in their life, for example; the loss of a loved one, celebration of their children, family heraldry, amongst many other personal and emotive drivers. Therefore it is vitally important that the client and artist have time to sit and discuss their desired outcomes so as to ensure they are met and ultimately exceeded.

To this end, Lucky Fifteen Tattoo has been able to secure the services of one of New Zealands most highly respected tattoo artists known in the industry as Gazza. Gazza has been tattooing for over 30 years and his work encompasses a wide cross section of styles, especially intricate tribal artwork. Two further artists shall also join the team later in the year.

Lucky Fifteen Tattoo Emerald is a totally new studio with new owners and artists and they are determined to ensure their clients achieve total satisfaction from their tattoo or piercing investment. The industry has come a long way over the past 15 years and it is the goal of the owners, management and staff to take it to the next level.

The new Studio is located right in the heart of Emerald, pop in and see us, give us a call on 4987 4624 or follow us on Facebook. Hope to see you here soon.

HISTORICALLY THE ART OF TATTOOING WAS RELEGATED TO THE PERCEPTION OF UNSAVOURY STUDIOS, UNREGULATED ARTISTS AND ANTI-SOCIAL CUSTOMERS CULMINATING IN AN INDUSTRY DESIGNED TO MEET THE DEMANDS OF A VERY SMALL CROSS SECTION OF THAT COMMUNITY.

Customers need to feel comfortable and relaxed when coming into the premises. The ability to discuss their designs with the artists in quiet and relaxed surroundings is paramount to ensuring an overall exciting and enjoyable experience.

Many people dream about commuting to and from their home via their own helicopter. For one of Mackays wealthy individuals, this dream could soon become a reality. A house just listed with Ray White City solely occupies the top of arguably, Mackays most prominent hill top location. In addition to direct helicopter access, this home also boasts a long list of jaw-dropping features.

Arriving at the house you could be forgiven for thinking you had entered the set of a James Bond film. A large waterfall and a series of LED lit bubbling water fountains flank the driveway and combine to create an ambiance of both tranquillity and sophistication. The house appears to be entrenched into the top of the hill and a series of electric garage doors at the rear of the ground floor provides access to the oversized showroom style vehicle parking areas. A large six-metre high glass facade provides viewing into the house, which is dominated by an oversized set of uniquely designed timber and steel framed stairs, providing a hint of the perfectionism that lies within. Entry to the house is gained via fingerprint recognition and a large glass panel sliding door.

On the ground floor there is a private guest quarters, gym area, study and built in wine storage display. The ground floor also demonstrates the importance given to the buildings services with two tank rooms, a pump room, automation and control area. The tank rooms harvest water from 500sqm of roof area and the entire house can be run from rainwater. The automation controls all aspects of the house and a residents iPhone can control music to any room in the house.

When you reach the top of the stairs you enter a spectacular main living, kitchen and dining area. A 4m high glass wall of bi-folding doors and motorised glass louvers blur the boundaries between inside and out. Here the sense of panorama is breathtaking with views spanning from the port of Hay Point, to the Whitsunday Islands and to the mountain range to the west. With the touch of a button, louvers open and the glass doors are replaced by full width motorised insect screens opening up the house so that its occupants can experience the full beauty of the surrounding environment.

To the south of the main living area is a series of block-work blade walls dividing the individual bedrooms, which project past the building envelope to offer more private and sheltered spaces for each of the bedroom zones. The blades also add further protection from the sun and rain while the full height glass bi-fold doors and private balconies

Mackay needs more than an annual festival, Adrian believes, so he formed 4eva Young Entertainment to bring artists to the city year-round. CORE Life quizzed Adrian on how he got started, what it takes to be a festival coordinator and his dream for Mackay.

Q: What was your path to developing River Sessions?

A: Back then, I wanted to bring a few bands to town so I could party with my mates and listen to good music. Today its the largest single day non-touring regional festival in Queensland. Now music and event management is my full time career. Im loving it.

Q: How has River Sessions evolved since 2009?

A: It has grown from under 1500 people to an expected 10,000 this year. The festival went from a small stage to two major stages with some of the biggest production seen in Mackay.

Q: What other events are you involved in?

A: I have done major tours in Queensland, including two tours with The Hilltop Hoods. At the moment Im working on getting a major music event happening as part of the River to Reef Festival on Saturday 5 October. Im

also working with Go Wake on the World Championship Series Event.

Q: What does a day in your life look like?

A: It depends on the time of year. Most of the time its waking up early for a big breakfast then I go into the office. I try to get to the gym or take the dog for a walk most days.

Q: What are the most and least glamorous aspects of being a festival coordinator?

A: The least glamorous is usually the lack of sleep for 48-72 hours prior to a major event as well as putting up temporary fencing. After-parties are glamorous but with the lack of sleep, I usually fall asleep on a couch. As a festival coordinator, I have met many great people, musicians and artists.

Q: What is your vision for the Mackay music scene?

A: I think the scene is coming along well. A few bands from Mackay are touring and making an impact around Queensland. There are some talented artists, such as Ashleigh Cordingley, that I think could go a long way.

SMALL-SCALE CONCERTS WERE THE NORM IN MACKAY UNTIL ADRIAN YOUNG CAME ALONG. ADRIAN FOUNDED THE RIVER SESSIONS FESTIVAL IN 2009, WINNING THE SUPPORT OF LOCALS AND GARNERING PROMOTION FROM NATIONAL BROADCASTER TRIPLE J.

    EVERMORE LIVE AT MAGNUMS

    3rd MAYFRIDAYMAGNUMS HOTEL

Evermores journey from three home-schooled brothers in New Zealand to taking over the Australian charts with the debut album Dreams in 2004 is almost the stuff of indie-rock folklore.

Self-recorded, produced, mixed, and released, the new album is aptly titled Follow the Sun. As Jon describes: Id always had this idea to take a mobile studio to inspiring places around the world and record the results, so thats exactly what we did. We went to LA, Buenos Aires, Paris, Jerusalem, Spain and Morocco. It was an amazing trip, so many experiences Ill never forgetgetting patted down for weapons by cops on the side of the freeway outside Los Angeles after we ran out of gas, getting completely lost in the maze of ancient streets and incredible food that is Marrakech.

The results are Evermores most accomplished effort to date sitting somewhere between early U2 and Simple Minds expansiveness, bluesy late Beatles jams and driving 70s folk, all connected by a mesh of hopeful, engaging lyrics.

Jon and Pete will take the new album to the live stage while brother Dann continues his work in their Stables Studio working on his new project, Danco.

Asked what the dominant theme of the album is, Jon replies, This album is all about connection. The things we have in common between the three of us as brothers and friends. The common threads of life that everyone experienceslove, loss and friendship.

Their new album is one of boldness and hope, existing at that horizon point in the distance where the sun appears impossibly large but undoubtedly real.

EVER SINCE IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT SUPER-TALENTED GUY SEBASTIAN WAS TOURING AROUND AUSTRALIA AND STOPPING IN MACKAY, THE CORE OFFICE HAS BEEN A-BUZZ.

WE WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO SCORE A LITTLE CHAT WITH THE ONE AND ONLY GUY SEBASTIAN. HERES WHAT HE HAD TO SAY

Q: Youve had some pretty big collaborations do you have a favourite of all the people that youve worked with?

A: Id have to say Lupe Fiasco, you know its the most recent one. Ive had the pleasure of working with people like Brian McKight, Robin Thicke, Jordan Sparks actually Jordan was a sweetheart as well.

Q: Youve released 7 albums, 6 of which were in the Top 5 in the ARIA Charts how do you find the success affects you?

A: Ive just had [recent album] Battlescars go GOLD in the US, so I never expected that to happen.

I definitely find it humbling, I mean I dont really think about it that much and just get on with it. Its a weird concept to stand by and praise yourself and pat yourself on the back. To me, thats a waste of time, Im always just thinking of other things I can do!

Q: Lets talk about XFactor what drew you to be involved in the judging panel for that particular mentoring program?

A: Umm I guess it was just such an exciting prospect for me having come through a very similar process on Idol. For me, almost a decade later, to be that guy who provides that guidance.

Q: Do you find yourself sugar-coating your critique of someones performance, or do you prefer to have it all out on the table?

A: Ive found that Ive been pretty honest I try to be honest. When someones not great, I tell them. I dont think theres ever a need to embarrass someone or make fun of them, but at the same time, youve got to be careful not to build peoples hopes up when in reality its a very, very hard road after the show which is really the test.

Q: Youre heading to Mackay in early June, are you looking forward to coming back to the area?

A: Absolutely its been a while since Ive been there. I think the last time I was in Mackay; I did a charity walk for cancer and went fishing in the Pioneer River. Im about to embark on this 48-Dates Tour and travel around in a Winnebago so I can take Hudson and Jules. But the bands sick my drummers just awesome and a crazy guitar player and bass player and Lenny Kravitz trumpet player.

Q: What are you expecting of the Mackay Crowd?

A: I think Im going to be pleasantly surprised. Im looking forward to playing a few regional shows. In the cities, Im playing quite big venues of 4000 5000 people, so its going to be a lot more intimate.

FRANKENSTEIN is an astonishing adaptation and it was a huge hit for the National Theatre in 2011. Director Mark Kilmurry explains, The play gives the Creature a voice - this is a Creature that talks, that can be articulate about the way he feels - and the way he feels is very angry. Weve got some exciting young talent on stage in this piece - its going to be something very scary indeed.

A troupe of actors arrive to put on a play of Frankenstein. These actors dance, juggle, act and tumble. They set the bare stage: a scenic design capturing the gothic darkness of Mary Shelleys novel; flaming torches light the back walls; actors exit and enter the acting circle, while other actors watch their scenes; make up is applied; blood, dirt; a cello player, half human, half creature plays stirring music; the creature comes to life in a burst of light and steam; the images of anatomy flash back on the walls; heartbeats pound in the darkness...another flash of light... the creature tries to speak! and the play begins.

Getting into weekend mode is easy with resident singer Le-Anne Cowell performing every Saturday night. She has a classic, contemporary style perfect for sitting back and relaxing over a good bottle of red with friends and family.

Good quality local produce is obviously a key ingredient to this restaurants success. Some of my recommendations would have to include the Chilli Mint Quail for entre served with bok choy, oyster sauce and chilli jam, for main the Sticky Rack of Lamb served with roasted capsicum, baby spinach, potato gratin and red wine jus, or my personal favourite, the Prosciutto Chicken served with wild mushroom risotto, basil oil, sun dried tomatoes and Persian feta. Dont miss dessert here because everything is made daily on the premises and are a real indulgence. Try the Violet Crumble Torte which is ultra-decadent with double cream.

Dietary requirements are often felt to be inconvenient when dining out, but here they are only too happy to cater to your needs. Allergies such as nut, dairy or celiac are no problem for the chefs to cater for and the utmost care is taken with these meals. Vegetarian is a main dietary requirement and the menu reflects this choice. Try the Roast Pumpkin Ravioli filled with goats cheese and pine nut sage burnt butter for main and for dessert, Traditional Chocolate Brownie baked daily and served with double cream. Guaranteed to not disappoint.

All meal options can be complemented by the beverages menu. Only recently updated, it is proving to be very popular. The cocktails on offer are way too easy to drink and always leave you wanting more. With their generous selection of local and international beers on offer, you wont go away disappointed. Every wine to suit every palette available, just ask the friendly bar staff to guide you through your selections.

Quality of service seems to be of utmost importance here. The staff are faultlessly groomed, with a can do attitude. They seem happy to go that extra mile to ensure you not only enjoy a meal out but have a true dining experience. Attention to detail is obvious and the overall persona of this restaurant is amplified in the happy nature of the staff.

FOR MANY YEARS NOW, SPINNER BAITS HAVE BEEN VIEWED AS A SOUTHERN TYPE LURE FOR SPECIES SUCH AS BASS, GOLDEN PERCH AND THE MIGHTY MURRAY COD.

Since our move north to work at Akwa Marine in Townsville, I havent been able to go and throw what I consider one of the best freshwater lures available in Australia. Not knowing any of the hidden pockets to go and fish yet, I just had to go flush some of the salt out of my veins and the Burdeken river near Charters Towers seemed like the easiest location for a newbie to the area.

I have caught heaps of Sooties in the past on small divers like the 50mm Poltergeist, and Tilsan Basses, but this time opted for on a small quarter ounce Bassman with a green, black and white skirt and double Colorado (round) blades and in minutes had my first Northern Sooty of around 42cm laying on the sand at my feet.

They share a lot of characteristics with the southern Bass thats for sure, and anyone who has chased Bass in the past will just need to employ the same techniques to get amongst the Sooties.

Its amazing how many people in the north have never heard or seen a spinnerbait before. But you can back it, they will be very well accepted in the Sooty and Saratoga waters for the uninitiated. For the slower and deeper pools, working a tandem quarter or 3/8 with a slow retrieve will bend your rod, and casting upstream and winding back with the current is best done with the double Colorado, as the round blades grab more water and rotate with less pressure and speed.

Down Ssouth youd be mad not to use a spinnerbait with a stinger hook attatched, but with the Sooties, the attack is so aggressive and the strike so centralised that stingers do not seem necessary on all but the hardest fished waters. Soon to be stocked in Akwa Marine, come in and get hold of the latest releases in the Bassman range specifically designed for the Sooties and Togas, not to mention some of the salty lures being currently developed.

    Hodgie - the Barefoot Fisherman.

CORAL TROUT are without a doubt the most targeted fish in northern Queensland and why wouldnt they be? Firstly they taste fantastic, and that is not just my opinion. They fetch big dollars as live export to Asia and are highly sought after by professional fishermen. But as any local would agree, a fresh fillet of Coral Trout lightly dusted in a bit of flour and shallow fried in butter, it doesnt get much better. The good thing with Coral Trout is that they are widely distributed, with fish found inshore along the coast and bays all the way out to deep shoals towards the continental shelf.

Coral Trout, as with most fish, hang around some kind of structure. Coral Bommies, reef edges and drop offs, wrecks, jetties, even something as simple as a mooring block can be a possible location on catching a trout.

Generally speaking, the best time to target Coral Trout is first thing in the morning. Trout are not night feeders, they hide during the dark hours so this makes them hungry come first light in the morning. Although they can be caught when there is little tide movement. When fishing for trout always keep the flow of the current in mind, as this will indicate the best spot on the reef to fish for them. Trout will almost always be sitting on the bottom on the pressure face of the reef/bommie or structure.

BEST BAITS/LURES: Coral Trout will eat almost anything. Although I believe fish bait is generally best, we have caught plenty of good fish on squid also. Pilchards, fresh cut baits, Tuna and Trevally strips work well along with live bait. Live Herring or Mullet dont last long on the bottom if the Trout are around! Trout are also very aggressive towards lures, jigs and soft plastics. Trolling hard-bodied deep and shallow divers around reef edges can produce quality fish. It always amazes me the size of the Trout that will attack a lure trolled past its territory, sometimes the lure can be half the fishs size but territorial instinct says attack! Jigs and soft plastics bounced on the bottom also produce quality fish.

RIGS: As with most fishing, you should always try and use the lightest rigs possible. This will give you more bites and hopefully more fish caught. Sometimes if the fish are a little shy I will go down in leader size to 60lb but anywhere from 60-100lb should suffice. A running ball or bean sinker is preferred if the current is not too strong, otherwise you may need to use a paternoster rig with a larger snapper lead on the bottom with your hook 3 feet up from there.

THE FIGHT: Coral Trout are cunning! Trout will always swim towards any structure once hooked and the unaware angler has to do his/her best to stop them in their tracks! Once hooked up you have a fight on your hands getting them up for the first 5 metres, after this the Trout will generally give up. Keep constant steady pressure on and the fish will come to the surface for boating.

Trout, as with most fish, are best to be bleed immediately and put in ice slurry to maintain its perfect condition. Although it is hard to beat fresh Coral Trout, it does freeze well. Place in an airtight back and in the freezer, you will be eating one of the oceans best another day!

SPANISH MACKEREL are also a highly sought after species and with good reason. They also taste great, they put up a pretty good fight (especially the big ones) and they just look impressive! With razor sharp teeth and their long sleek body, its any wonder they are one of the fastest fish in the sea.

Spanish Mackerel are also one of the most accessible species to anglers here in the Whitsundays. They can be caught along the coast and bays all the way out to the Continental Shelf. They can be caught all year round but the best times are winter and spring.

Although they turn up in some unusual spots, Spanish Mackerel are usually found around reefs/shoals and island headlands. They feed on all sorts of

THESE QUESTIONS ARE OFTEN ASKED WHEN FISHING THE WHITSUNDAYS SO THE FOLLOWING IS A BRIEF RUN DOWN ON 2 OF THE MOST POPULAR TARGET SPECIES AND WHERE/WHEN TO TARGET THEM.

  • fish like Garfish, Flying Fish, Reef Fish and Ribbonfish (Wolf Herring).

BEST BAITS/LURES: The bigger Spanish Mackerel are generally taken on live baits whilst bottom fishing. Fusiliers or a Stripey Sea Bass under a balloon out the back is an excellent way to catch a big Spaniard, they just love them. Trolling is another method to target Spanish and they will readily take hard bodied lures and rigged dead baits. Garfish are my favorite for fishing at the Great Barrier Reef and the Ribbonfish is the pick of the baits around the islands and inshore reefs and headlands.

Pressure points on the reefs/island headlands are the likely spots to find Spanish, these spots are also where jigging metal knife jigs can be successful.

RIGS: All rigs need to have wire at the hook or lure end to prevent bite offs from the Spaniards razor sharp teeth. A 2-hook rig for live baits is the norm with 1 hook placed behind the head and the other in the tail. Mackerel always bite the tail off their prey first. Rigged troll baits must be rigged on gang hooks that run back to the tail of the bait also.

Once hooked, Spanish run hard and fast sometimes, stripping 200 metres of line in one burst. This will normally tire all but the biggest mackerel out. Keep constant pressure on and a cool head and you should be able to pump and wind the fish to the boat for capture. Also remember to bleed and ice immediately for best quality.

There are plenty of good spots to target Spaniards around the Whitsundays. Here are a few that produce fish every year; Dolphin Point on the northern tip of Hayman Island, False Nara Inlet on the western side of Hook Island, Hannah Point on the northern end of North Molle Island, Pioneer Rocks, Leeper Shoal, the Edwards Island group and the entrance to Shute Harbour.
