The Santiago Bernabéu stadium was once again filled with solidarity for the most recent edition of the Corazón Classic Match, under the title ‘Our commitment’. The Real Madrid fans delighted in the football played out on the pitch by Real Madrid Legends and Ajax Legends, in game that finished with a 3-1 win for the Whites. “All the funds raised will go to Caritas’ programme for the homeless. We’re talking about people without a home, who spend much of their time out on the streets, and whose lives are touched by suffering” said Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, during the presentation of the Corazón Classic Match 2016.

ThrillS and fine fooTBallThe football on display from Real Madrid and Ajax didn’t let anybody down. Nor did the result, a 3-1 win, with goals from

Figo, McManaman and Butragueño. The Madrid fans got to see, once again, Raúl’s skills, Roberto Carlos’ mighty strikes, Figo’s crosses and Guti’s backheels. It was, though, Ajax who opened the scoring. A move down the left from Overmars saw Roberto Carlos clear, but it hit Seedorf and went in. Despite going behind Real Madrid were the better side. McManaman, Guti and Figo were linking up well just outside the box and putting the Dutch goal under threat. The Portuguese forward was one of the most incisive players on the pitch, and after a couple of close efforts he got his reward to make it 1-1, slotting home a rebound in the box. The Whites continued to press, and just after were in front. Raúl sent the ball wide for Figo to cross and McManaman beat Van der Sar with the header: 2-1 at half-time. The second half saw the usual round

Corazón Classic Match2016

of substitutions for both sides. Among them, Seedorf, who played the first half for Real Madrid and the second with Ajax. Meanwhile, Madrid’s strikers continued to enjoy themselves. Figo, after a great move from Raúl and Roberto Carlos, came mighty close to the third. The minutes went by and somehow there were no goals from either side, despite a host of chances. Ronald de Boer tried for Ajax; Solari replied for Madrid. There were numerous

displays of quality from the legends and the fans responded with a Mexican wave. Ajax were close to levelling it late on, but it was Butragueño who killed things off, making it 3-1. All in all, another successful edition of this charitable festival of football, which also paid homage to Johan Cruyff.

the Real Madrid Foundation’s work to help society’s most vulnerable individuals, in this case homeless people cared for by Cáritas España. In previous editions of the Corazón Classic Match Real Madrid Legends have played veterans from iconic sides (AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Juventus, Inter Milan, Liverpool…) raising funds for investigation into sudden cardiac death; the Real Madrid Foundation’s social sports project in Africa; charity snacks for more than 5,000 boys and girls living at risk throughout Spain; social sports activities in children’s shelters; and to help children at risk within the Promoting School Success programme from the Spanish Red Cross.

The boys and girls give real Madrid legends a guard of honour.

Tribute

Organised by the Real Madrid Foundation, the Luis de Carlos Forum paid a special tribute to the club’s legendary former player in an event that saw him joined by Santamaría, Pachín, Miera and Serena.

luis de carlos forum

The latest instalment of the Luis de Carlos Forum, entitled Gento: la Galerna del Cantábrico (‘Gento: the Gale of the Cantabrian Sea’), honoured a figure who is nothing short of a Real Madrid great: Paco Gento, the only player to have won six European Cups and 12 Spanish league titles. The event was held in the Grand Presidential hall of the Hotel Villa Magna in Madrid, where the star of the show was accompanied by the Real Madrid Foundation’s executive vice-president, Enrique Sánchez, and

opposition running all over the place. He would run 20 metres, then stop dead and the player who was tracking him ended up flying past him without being able to stop him”.

Leadership on and off The fieLdMiera emphasized his admiration for Gento as a person: “He’s one of those people who stands out for his great kindness, and you can’t put a price on that.” Pachín, like Miera also from Gento’s region of Cantabria, moved to underline the player’s qualities as a human being too. “Different class both on the pitch and off it,” he declared – adding that as a fellow Cantabrian, he was hugely proud to have played with him for nine years – and went on to provide an instructive example of the mark of the man: “If you misplaced a pass to him, he’d never have a go at you.”

Finally, Serena had no hesitation in classing Gento as one of the best in the world during his playing days. “He was so good that we all had total faith in him,” he noted. “There’s not much left to say about Gento that hasn’t already been said over all these years. He wasn’t just quick, he also possessed incredible power running down the wing. I’ve always admired him, and as a teammate he was exceptional,” he concluded.

The tribute saw Gento surrounded

by ex-teammates, who highlighted

his greatness as a footballer and his

generosity of spirit on and off the pitch

by fellow former Whites footballers José Emilio Santamaría; Enrique Pérez, known as ‘Pachín’; Vicente Miera; and Fernando Serena. A very special evening was topped off by an exclusive exhibition put on by the Real Madrid C.F. Historical Heritage Centre.

Winning aTTiTudeLooking back over many trophy victories he was a part of, Gento highlighted the team’s spirit and sense of pride as the key factors in achieving them. “We didn’t

like to lose games,” he explained, before revealing: “The most special piece of silverware for me was the club’s sixth European Cup, because no one believed that we could win it.” He also spoke of traits that have transcended the different periods of Real’s history: “We’ve never played for a draw; we’ve always gone out there to win and that’s why we’ve had so much success.”

Naturally, there was also an opportunity for the men who had turned out alongside Gento to offer their thoughts on such a special player. Santamaría stressed Gento’s calibre as a footballer. “He’s right up there with the best I’ve seen,” he said. “He had the

The Real Madrid Foundation and

Microsoft have extended the collaboration agreement they signed in May 2013, which aims to help introduce children and young people to technology and provide access to training on computing and programming as part of the YouthSpark initiative run by the tech giant. The renewal of the partnership was signed in the Santiago Bernabéu boardroom by the president of Real Madrid, Florentino Pérez, and Orlando Ayala, chairman of emerging

markets at Microsoft, who were joined by Pilar López, country general manager at Microsoft Spain, Real Madrid Foundation executive vice-president Enrique Sánchez, and Emilio Butragueño, Real Madrid’s director of institutional relations.

Butragueño commented: “Microsoft brings us something that’s absolutely fundamental: reinforcing the education that young people get through technology. We’ve established a hugely solid alliance that we have now extended for a further three years. Moving forward, this is a global alliance that is going to have a positive effect on all the children at the social sports schools that we have across the world.”

Speaking in the same vein, Ayala declared that the partnership between the two organisations plays its part in giving greater opportunities

to the students of the Real Madrid Foundation’s schools, in the process “reducing the digital divide and providing thousands of kids with the chance to carve out a brighter future.”

López added: “We share the values that the Foundation represents and

During his visit, Carvajal had words of thanks for the efforts of all those who make

this programme possible, in doing so ensuring that many children’s education is something that stays closely linked to sporting activity, describing it as a “healthy initiative that will help them to grow up with a stronger future.”

He also touched on his own experiences as he emphasised humility, hard

work and desire as values that are fundamental to achieving your dreams and, in this vein, had words of encouragement for the students: “When I was young, I played football with the dream of one day being a Real Madrid player and, with a bit of luck and plenty of hard work, I can now say that it’s a dream that has come true.”

Also in attendance at the event was the mayor of Leganés, Santiago Llorente, who expressed his delight at the existence of this project and thanked Carvajal for his commitment towards making sure it remained “in better shape than ever”. Llorente declared: “Leganés is represented at Real Madrid, and that’s an example for thousands of children in our town to follow, because it shows that effort and dedication can take a kid from Leganés to the very highest level of the sporting world.” He also highlighted the work the player does to give something back to society, both with Real Madrid and in his daily life, “to help us meet the goal of inculcating the values of sport in our kids and in families going through tough times.”

The continual development of the coaches at the social sports schools that the Real Madrid Foundation has in every part of the world is vital to the education and integration of its beneficiaries. And that process of teaching teachers comes down to its trainers.

The Real Madrid Foundation’s training team passed on the practical and theoretical know-how offered by the course They play, we teach in a range of locations across the globe. The first stop for the programme was Cali, Colombia. There, the Foundation’s trainers shared their expertise and methodology with 40 coaches from the social sports schools that are operated in collaboration with the Fundación Revel in the locations of Cali, Bogotá, Villavicencio, Villamarín and El Pasto.

The chief theme of the theoretical sessions was the implementation of values and using football to develop the youngsters’ education and recreational habits. The practical sessions were attended by 80 children from one of the poorest parts of Cali. The city has more than a thousand students spread over 14 schools.

The city of Niterói in Brazil was

the next destination. The course saw the participation of six coaches, two project directors and two social activities coordinators from the three social sports schools that the Foundation runs in Brazil - located in Sao Paulo, Niterói and Jacarezinho-Rio de Janeiro – in partnership with the NGO Misones Salesianas. These visits guarantee that the coaches receive ongoing guidance and resolve the most common doubts arising in training sessions, so as to perfect their activities and to ensure they follow as closely as possible the Real Madrid Foundation methodology.

The social sports schools in Brazil mainly work with children and young people from disadvantaged family backgrounds.

The course was given twice in Ecuador. First, in Quito, it was imparted to the coaches at the two social sports schools in the city, run in collaboration with the Universidad de las Américas and the Universidad SEK, and to the trainers at the school in Ambato, which is supported by the town’s chamber of commerce. The second was held in Guayaquil for the coaches of two schools operated with

the Colegio Internacional SEK and the Fundación Cecilia Ricadeneira, and for the facility in Manta, which is backed by the CAF Núñez learning centre. The participants took a closer look at the tools and strategies for planning the different contents that should make up a training session.

In Panama, the 22 coaches from the social sports schools in Panama City, Tolé and Chitré participated. The course was held at the facilities of the Parque Omar Torrijos, which is the administrative and sporting site for the social sports school in the capital.

The schools cater for youngsters aged between five and 17 who live nearby and who, in addition, reach an average grade of 3 out of 5. As well as doing sport, the students receive psychological care and periodic medical check-ups, and benefit from vaccination drives.

The course They play, we teach also travelled to Mozambique, to the region of Boane, where its trainers worked with 15 coaches from the Casa do Gaiato, Khandelo, Massaca and Hulene social sports schools. The contents of the programme were divided into four theoretical blocks and one practical section, covering methodology and sports instruction, planning and programming, didactics and pedagogy, and health education. The Foundation’s local partner, Crusade for Children, teams up with Casa de Gaiato, which was founded by Father Américo Monteiro de Aguiar to shelter, educate and integrate unaccompanied minors. The beneficiaries of these schools are children in a situation of extreme vulnerability who, as well as doing sport, also receive food supplements.

The team’s final trip took it to Milan, where it gave its third training course on football to 15 coaches on the pitches of the club Borgolombardo. The visit also allowed the Foundation to monitor the progress of the social sports school, which got up and running in 2011 in collaboration with Soccerland Italia. The school is an example of integration and peaceful coexistence between a range of nationalities.

In their theoretical and practical

sessions, the training courses focus

on the implementation of both the Real

Madrid Foundation's values and its

methodology as students play sport

If there is one thing the teenager Steven Bustos knows, it’s the importance of effort and respect. Two attitudes that ensure dreams come true. Steven is from Heredia, Costa Rica, and since he was a young boy (he’s now 15), he wanted to play football. While he tells us his story he’s wearing a shirt his hero, Keylor Navas, gave him during

Due to his family’s economic situation he couldn’t play football until he was accepted in a social sports school. “The head of the school and my teacher have helped me a lot”, he says. Along with other teammates, he greatly improved his football at the Real Madrid Foundation social sports school. So much so that he’s now played for a number of local sides.

His tale involves a lot of humility and hard work. Just like his hero, Keylor. “My dream was always to be a footballer. I think it’s important to be patient and stay humble, to pay attention to what the teachers say, to be respectful and responsible…” stresses Steven. He’s learnt a lot at the school, and something more: he’s improved his attitude and now feels better about life. Back in December he was told he was going to Madrid. “I was stunned” he says. His biggest dream was to see Keylor and give him a special gift: his boots. “I’d had them for

Both now have solid future plans. Ayoub is going to first go to Morocco with his aunt and uncle, then to France. He wants to be a computer technician, because he’s good with mobiles, he says. “My dream is to have my own shop”, he notes. Meanwhile Carmen has learnt to communicate better and analyse

situations in order to find a solution and not let her impulses get the better of her, and not be “so cocky”. When she’s older she wants to be a stallholder and once she’s earned enough, to have her own vineyard in Bogotá. “I’ve got so many dreams and I’m sure I’ll fulfil them because I’m hard-working”, she says. stories from the heart 39

The basketball activities run by the Real Madrid Foundation have their own stories from the heart, like those experienced by coaches Dilmi, Mohamed and Ezzedami from Algeria and Azouz, Khalis and Lahmidi from Morocco during a series of training sessions in Madrid.

They began with a “really interesting” theory section, say the coaches, where they learnt about aspects of the sport they hadn’t seen before. But it was the practical part that was of most use in terms of bringing the goals of the Foundation to their schools. They visited a number of schools and saw the

methods and messages employed, and how they are adapted to the age of each group. “We enjoyed the training a lot”, they said.

During the course they learnt how to prepare their training sessions alongside Foundation trainers, who also answered all their questions. Now they know how to design a complete session, from planning the educational objectives to doing the exercises. They also highlighted how transmitting values was mixed with playing sport in order to educate and instil in the children concepts such as equality, self-sufficiency and respect, and how to teach these in the exercises.

One of the main problems children between six and 10 face in Algeria is the social situation they live in and the coaches work to teach them how to channel any aggression they have through sporting values.

Tools for inTegraTionAccording to these six coaches, “the Foundation’s philosophy helps children to integrate”. They learnt the importance of communication with their students and their role in motivating them. No matter what a person’s capabilities, everyone has their part to play in society.

Thanks to the efforts made by everyone, particularly the trainer Jorge Franco, there was no language barrier, and the six friends returned home with a new perspective.

For Dilmi, Mohamed, Ezzedami, Azouz, Khalis and Lahmidi, “it was a unique experience” that taught them that sport “is valuable so that children in the future can be well-rounded people”, they said.

“Sport is valuable so that

There were lots of fun moments, such as when one of the coaches gave his sweatshirt to a student for their birthday.

The training provided a backdrop for the coaches to pool the experience and expertise accrued from their efforts within the diverse Foundation projects and to share in the methodological advances imparted to them by the organisation’s Values Group. The practical section of the course was held on the courts of the Josep Tarradellas primary school

Educational toolThe training days saw the participation of Ramón Rico, an expert in organisational psychology from the Department of Social Psychology and Methodology at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, and Richi Serrés, a basketball coach and former member of staff at the ACB, the organisation that runs Spain’s major professional league. On hand to close out the training was Rafael Rullán, head of the Foundation’s basketball activities. He highlighted the importance that the sport is taking on as an educational tool: “To be successful, the training that the coaches receive is fundamental, because they are our hands, eyes and ears on each of the courts where we work with a range of social groups.” The event also saw the presentation of the minutes book of the inaugural Coaching Course in Values and Basketball.

More than 50 professional coaches came together at the Santiago Bernabéu, where they attended the latest instalment of the training days organised by the Real Madrid Foundation’s basketball section. The central theme of this sixth edition of the course was the resolution of conflicts within teams. This will see more than 2,000 beneficiaries get the benefit of the learning and specialisation gained by these coaches, who are part of the 70 projects currently being run in the Foundation’s different programme areas: social sports schools, summer camps, initiatives at penitentiary facilities, etc. All of this work is carried out within the

Being part of the Real Madrid Foundation clinics is so much more than just sport. All the dreams and efforts of the participants translate directly into future opportunities, through social projects, for other groups of children who find themselves in less favourable situations. Their participation directly supports our social projects around the world: encouraging education and promoting equality, playing sport and an education in sporting values.

Gentogifts his sporting memorabilia to Real MadridLa Galerna del Cantábrico (The Gale of the Cantabrian Sea), Paco Gento, has given over 1,500 items related to his playing career at Real Madrid. “This stadium started to believe that no conquest was impossible thanks to men such as Gento”, said Florentino Pérez during the presentation at the Santiago Bernabéu.

The story of Paco Gento at Real Madrid is far more than an accumulation of titles: six European Cups, 12 Ligas, two Copas… There’s more to it even than the memory of 18 years of incredible sprints down the wing before putting over a cross just before running out of pitch - it’s the story of a man who left his mark thanks to the humanity he showed on the field and continues to demonstrate off it.

An AuThenTic MAdRid sToRyGento, the Galerna del Cantábrico, is one of the most important assets the club has. Now, his generosity sees him share with every madridista another treasure, one made up of precious objects, which he’s built up over the course of his sporting life, and which he’s given to Real Madrid so the fans can enjoy them. There

are more than 1,500 items, some of which will be on display in the Real Madrid Museum. “I’m proud to give my sporting memorabilia to the club which gave me everything. My wish is that young and old alike enjoy it”, said Gento during the official hand-over.

The event was presided over by Florentino Pérez in the Presidential Box at the Santiago Bernabéu, accompanied by members of the board and Gento’s former teammates such as Santamaría, Pachín, Amancio and Vicente Miera; as well as veterans

Thank you, dear Paco, for your generosity, for letting us, all the madridistas who love you, share part of your life. You are a symbol of the values of Real Madrid. This latest gesture, of sharing your story, is another example of your commitment and dedication to Real Madrid”.The protagonist of the event also wanted to give thanks, for the happy

moments he enjoyed as a player and the fact he has the chance to still delight in the team. He was also grateful to the teammates who helped him during his 18 seasons at the club, and all the Madrid fans for their continued demonstrations of affection. To conclude he expressed a desire shared by every madridista: “I hope that the team of today enjoys good fortune from here to the end of the season and continues to increase the club’s list of honours”.

Pedro de Felipe left us on 12 April this year, at 71. Florentino Pérez in an official statement explained the enormous sadness of every madridista for the loss of an “emblematic and unforgettable” player.According to the Real Madrid president, “everyone who had the luck to meet him will always have him in our hearts, due to his passion for Real Madrid and for his immense human qualities”. “He was a defender who represented the character of our badge and our shirt. He was a brave, solid central defender who had the responsibility of taking over from the legendary Santamaría at the heart of the Madrid defence. At just 21 he became a starter in the Madrid team that won the sixth European Cup. He won it in that historic final in Brussels, where alongside Araquistáin, Pachín, Sanchís, Zoco, Velázquez, Amancio, Gento, Pirri and others, they put Real Madrid once again at the pinnacle of European football, with a win over Partizan. That was, maybe, his most special trophy, but not the only one in a successful career that saw him also win five Ligas and a Spanish Cup between 1964 and 1972, during which time he played 170 games for the Whites, before moving to Espanyol, where he finished his career.
