The recognition assessment process at a glanceThe flow chart below shows an overview of the recognition assessment process at Inspire Education:

How recognition assessments work
What is a recognition assessment?
Recognition assessments are often referred to as:● RPL (recognition of prior learning) assessments or● RCC (recognition of current competence) assessments.
What you need to know about recognition assessments● Recognition assessments are evidence-based
You must be able to provide evidence of your skills and knowledge for an assessor to deem you ‘competent’
● You will be assigned a qualified assessor who will be available to answer questions and support you throughout the recognition process
● You may be assessed in one of two ways:1. Written portfolio only—In this case, compile your portfolio of
evidence and submit to Inspire Education, or2. Recognition interview—In this case, compile your portfolio of
evidence and submit to Inspire Education. Inspire Education will then arrange a suitable date and time for a verbal recognition interview with your assessor
● Enrolling as a recognition candidate doesn’t guarantee that you’ll be successful in your application for recognition. We recommend discussing your options with an Inspire Education Trainer and Assessor before enrolling in recognition assessment.
8 Inspire Education RPL Information Kit – No TAA - Version v1.2
Recognition assessment is a process that allows a candidate—you—to attain a nationally-recognised qualification or statement/s of attainment
based on skills and knowledge gained through previous experiences, including formal and/or informal learning.
TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment RPL Information for candidates without TAA40104
What is a portfolio of evidence?
Evidence: ‘show and tell’When deciding what evidence to include in your portfolio, consider the ‘show and tell’ (or rather, ‘tell and show’) approach:
Tell us(anecdotal evidence)
You tell us… what you know what you can do what you have done
Someone else tells us (verifies) what you know, what you can do, and what you have done. This is a called a ‘third party report’. Examples of third party reports include a reference letter, a performance review report, a questionnaire completed by a workplace supervisor, etc.
Show us(workplace documents, perhaps DVDs, etc)
Documents or other forms of evidence that demonstrate what you can do and have done.
Here, choose evidence of both products and processes. For example, when compiling evidence of your ability to design and develop a learning program:
An example of a product as evidence is the finalised learning program plan.
Examples of processes as evidence may include:
– documents showing training needs analyses undertaken
– copies of emails showing collaboration with others throughout program development.
Inspire Education RPL Information Kit – No TAA - Version v1.2 9
A Portfolio of Evidence is the term given to the collection of documents and other evidence
that you compile and submit as proof of your competence.
When compiling your portfolio, you’ll be asked to submit evidence that:
● tells us what you can do and have done (from you and from at least one credible ‘third party’ referee)
● shows us what you can do and have done (i.e. samples of work and other relevant documents).
RPL Information for candidates without TAA40104 ● TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
What is quality evidence?Quality evidence is evidence that is:● Valid
It is relevant to the skills and knowledge being assessed.● Sufficient
You must provide enough evidence to demonstrate competence. The Application Template tells you more about how much evidence is ‘enough’ evidence.
● CurrentThe evidence must demonstrate your competence ‘today’. Generally speaking, evidence should be drawn from projects/work samples that are no more than five years old, and include evidence of work completed within the past 12 months. This is a general guide only.
● AuthenticYou must be able to prove that the evidence is your own work.
Examples of quality evidenceTypes of quality evidence include (but aren’t limited to):● samples of work completed● certified copies of relevant qualifications and/or training completed● certified copies documents confirming your participation in relevant
training programs, workshops, professional development events, etc.● certified copies of reference letters from supervisors, colleagues, or
other relevant people (a third party report)● descriptions by you of relevant experiences● copies of emails that demonstrate training and/or assessment-related
processes undertaken● DVD or video of you demonstrating the skills being assessed● any other ‘evidence’ that you feel will adequately demonstrate
competency.
10 Inspire Education RPL Information Kit – No TAA - Version v1.2
The Application Template lists evidence to submit for each unit.
We are flexible! If you can’t provide the evidence listed, consider other forms of evidence that
provide similar information. Contact your Trainer and Assessor at Inspire Education for guidance, if needed.

Frequently asked questions about recognition assessments
May I apply for recognition assessment for some TAE40110 units, and enrol in training for others?Absolutely! This combined approach is a great way to formally acknowledge your existing skills and experience (recognition), and update your skills with training where appropriate. Contact Inspire Education if you think a combination of training and recognition assessment is right for you. We can help clarify your choices.
What are the possible results of a recognition assessment and what do they mean? The only possible assessment results you can get are:
Result Code
What this result means
Competent C Celebrate! You have submitted enough of the ‘right’ evidence for your assessor to find you ‘competent’ in the units of competency assessed.
Not yet competent
NYC The evidence presented suggests that you have not as yet achieved competence the units being assessed. You may get a NYC result because:
● The evidence you submitted was of a satisfactory standard, but not all the required evidence was submitted (in this case, all you need to do is submit the remaining required evidence)
● The evidence you submitted was not of a satisfactory standard
If you attain a NYC result, your assessor will work with you to devise a suitable action plan to achieve competence.
Remember that we are not here to ‘fail’ you—our intent is to keep working with you until you achieve competency. If more than one re-submission is needed, an additional assessment fee may apply.
How do I present my portfolio of evidence? You have two options:1. Present your portfolio to your assessor personally, at a recognition
assessment interview

General Comments
Portfolio was well-organised and easy to work through.Generally evidence provided was of a very good quality. Particularly impressive was evidence relating to assessment units. Candidate’s extensive experience as an assessor stood out.Need more evidence before I’m able to assign a ‘competent’ result for TAEDES401A Design and develop learning programs. For details of evidence required, see detailed report for that unit.

1 Program 1: Background informationProvide background information about this program—e.g. Why training was needed, who the client and learner group was, what was trained and how (delivery mode).
Program title: Researching the MarketThis is a 2-day face-to-face program that I developed for our senior sales staff. They need to be able to research our market to determine suitable target clients for each new product our company introduces. I developed this program 1.5 years ago and ran all existing senior sales staff through it. Now we run the program once every six months for senior management who are new to the role. I didn’t initially develop this program to be competency-based, but have researched the NTIS website and identified the unit BSBMKG408B Conduct market research as being relevant. So I have shown how program content addresses this unit.See attachment 7 for a copy of this unit.
2 Program 2: Background informationProvide information about program 2 as above.
Program Title: Time managementThis is a 1-day face-to-face program that is not competency-based. I developed this program 3 months ago for our sales team. Program purpose is to help learners organise their diaries so that they achieve the required number of client visits each week, and still complete

8 Step-by-step description of what you did: Choose one of the two programs submitted above. Give a detailed, step-by-step description of steps you took to identify training needs, then design and develop the learning program.
1. To identify training needs, I asked a few senior sales team members what they thought they needed help with. I also spoke to the General Manager, Sales, to ask her opinion.
2. We agreed on face-to-face training so that we could ensure all would complete the program.
3. I designed the developed the program content and structure over a

four-week period.4. When finished, ran the final draft by my own manager for review. I
also asked the General Manager, Sales for her approval. The GM had one or two requests for minor change, but nothing major.
5. I made the changes requested and we ran the program three weeks later.
9 Feedback and self reflectionSummarise feedback you have received as a learning program designer. If possible, submit written feedback (e.g. feedback form or email). Discuss your strengths as a learning program designer and identify opportunities for ongoing improvement.
See attachment 12—email from my manager showing her comments about the learning program. I have no workplace documentation specifically discussing my general skills as a program designer.Self-reflection:I have designed a developed an average of about 3 new learning programs each year for the past 4 years. I think that I have strong instructional design skills, and can set up a learning process that will promote learning. For ongoing improvement, I want to develop my skills in designing learning programs to reflect a blended delivery mode. I normally just develop learning programs for face-to-face, classroom delivery, and I want to learn more about self-paced and on-line learning options so that I can incorporate these into future learning programs that I develop.

Assessor comments (if result is ‘Not Yet Competent’ use this space to list additional evidence needed)
Although the result is not yet competent for this unit, very little additional evidence is needed for a competent result.
● Competency-based learning program plan was laid out well and easy to interpret. The plan reflected a logical learning progression with content divided into small chunks. The assessment was a ‘written test’. I recommend adding a practical assessment component (may be during or after training) to ensure competence. Resources were not listed on your plan, but I asked you what resources were used in our telephone conversation on 19 July; you were able to name the resources and explain that they were developed in-house. I suggest modifying your learning plan template to list resources required.

If possible, feedback forms or equivalent should also be submitted.
● Second program looks excellent. Very practical program, with small chunks of content at a time. Well done.
● Third party report was a well-written reference letter dated 5 June 2012. It listed numerous specific examples of different types of design, delivery and assessment activities undertaken and will be useful for multiple TAE40110 units.
Additional evidence required: Please re-submit a competency matrix that clearly shows the link between each session of your competency-based learning program and the relevant competency standard (BSBMKG408B Conduct market research). As part of the competency based learning plan you submitted, there was a heading called ‘competency matrix’. This section of the learning plan simply states that the program content aligns to BSBMKG408B. It doesn’t specify which parts of the unit are addressed in each session. Contact me if you have any queries.
