MAJOR GROUPS JOIN COX-OWNED VENTURE After more than a year in beta, Videa will officially launch its supply-side programmatic platform at today’s TVB Forward Conference in New York. Videa, owned by Cox Media Group, automates the buying and selling of full schedule, forward reserve, local broadcast television inventory and, the company says, it “infuses the process with data and analytics to optimize results.” Videa says it is integrating with TV stations and groups, demand-side platforms and data partners to bring more advertising dollars to local TV. Currently, Videa has more than 250 signed stations and will begin market cluster launches during the fourth quarter of this year. In addition to Cox Media Group, the company boasts relationships with leading broadcast station groups including, Graham Media Group, Gray, Hearst Television, Raycom, E.W. Scripps Company, Tegna, Media General and more. Videa is also working with major buying agencies, including Carat and its business unit, Amplifi, Starcom, Empower MediaMarketing and U.S. International Media. Shereta Williams (pictured), President of Videa, told us her team learned a lot during the beta test, including what level of automation is acceptable for the local TV selling process. Through the experience Videa has developed better sales tools and ways for stations to manage their sales on the platform. Although some programmatic platforms have incorporated TV inventory, Williams says Videa is the first platform designed by broadcasters for broadcasters. “It is a truly end-to-end automated platform, but does have screens and tools for people to be able to control the process where that makes sense,” she noted. Rather than monetizing unsold inventory through an auction—the digital model—Williams says Videa sells inventory weeks and quarters in advance, allowing advertisers to buy any time period and any audience. “We understand that selling TV is different from selling digital advertising,” she said. That said, some clients are asking to incorporate their TV-related digital inventory on the Videa platform. That’s a future target. “We want to be able to sell all inventory,” Williams said. Effective with today’s launch, the broadcast inventory from stations on Videa will also be available through Mediaocean’s Spectra and STRATA’s media buying platforms. AMAZON SET FOR HOLIDAY DOMINATION Ahead of the critical 2016 holiday season, where e-commerce is predicted to grow 13.6%, a new study from personalization platform company BloomReach, conducted by Survata, found that Amazon has grown its lead as the place where consumers first search for products. Now, 55% of online shoppers begin their search on Amazon when shopping for products online. The second-annual State of Amazon study, which surveyed 2,000 U.S. consumers over Labor Day weekend, found that search engines and retailers lost almost equal ground, coming in at 28% and 16% respectively. Amazon increased its share by 11% in one year following BloomReach’s inaugural State of Amazon. The study found that by Labor Day weekend, 42% of consumers had started gift shopping, and of the remaining majority who hadn’t—61%—will start on or before Black Friday. A majority plan to do more than 50% of their holiday shopping online. An astonishing 94% plan to shop on the Amazon this holiday season. In addition, BloomReach says consumers seem to view Amazon not only as a place to buy gifts, but also as a place to get gift ideas. When holiday shoppers know what gift they want: 59% will start on Amazon, 24% will start on a search engine and 16% will start at a retailer that has that product. When holiday shoppers don’t know what gift to buy: 49% will start on Amazon, 28% will start on a search engine and 26% will start on a retailer the gift recipient likes. An overwhelming majority of U.S. consumers recognize Amazon as the dominant player in e-commerce currently, and the State of Amazon study revealed that nearly one in five consumers was concerned about the company’s dominance relative to other retailers. How can retailers counter Amazon? Ensuring high-quality site experiences continues to be a prime reason why shoppers pick a retailer’s online site. Approximately 58% of U.S. consumers noted they’ve left a retailer’s site for Amazon after having a poor experience. This stands in stark contrast to the reverse scenario. Only 30% of consumers noted a bad site experience on Amazon had led them to shop with another retailer.

THIS AND THAT Here’s some good news: Consumer Confidence was up again this month and the index now stands at 104.1, the best number in nine years. The Present Situation aspect of the index rose from 125.3 last month to 128.5, and respondents stating jobs were “plentiful” rose to 27.9%. The Expectations part of the index, where respondents are asked to project conditions six months into the future, rose from 86.1 to 87.8. Only 10.2% of respondents now expect business conditions to worsen in that period……Factory orders for big-ticket items were flat in August. The report by the Commerce Department was a bit better than predictions of a slight decline......The Wall Street Journal reports that Japan’s Takata Corp. is in negotiations with U.S. prosecutors to settle possible criminal charges from its air bag ruptures.
