Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercol-legiate conferences.

The first major step came in 1977, when based on a grow-ing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II.

The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich history, adding full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the one associate.

All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level.

Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its

teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the member-ship’s success has yielded 42 NCAA team and 228 indi-vidual title winners.

While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 par-ticipants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s.

Although all 16 current institutions are members of Divi-sion II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 students and claim over 670,000 alumni, including 430,000 who reside in Pennsylvania.

Academics and Athletics

Shippensburg University shapes its athletic program to fi t within the overall academic goals of the university—maintaining a balance between athletics and academics.

Since 1984, the university’s Offi ce of Institutional Research has monitored the progress of our athletes in the classroom. The original study found that Shippensburg was ahead of many institutions in meeting the standards of Propositions 48 and 64 — two NCAA resolutions designed to set minimum educational levels in collegiate athletes.

Proposition 64 of the NCAA established a mini-mum score of 700 in the SAT and a 2.0 grade point average in 11 core curriculum courses in high school. Proposition 48 carries these minimums even further and outlines availability of scholarships to freshmen athletes based on their school performance.

Incoming freshmen athletes show preparation levels comparable to those of all incoming students. In 2006, the average SAT score for incoming freshmen athletes was 1006, only slightly below the SAT aver-age for new incoming students of 1015. Both groups average in the upper two-fi fths of their graduating high school classes.

Today Shippensburg University athletes continue to uphold the study’s fi ndings. The quality point aver-age (QPA) for all athletic teams in 2006-07 was 2.67 on a 4.0 scale. The 10 women’s teams had a 2.93 overall average while the eight men’s teams averaged 2.82. This can be compared to the fall 2006 fi gures: the total student body QPA averaged 2.82, females were slightly higher at 2.98, and males were slightly lower at 2.66.

Shippensburg’s athletes continue to show high six-year graduation rates. Seventy-one percent of those receiving athletically related fi nancial aid gradu-ate within six years of enrolling. The 2005 NCAA Graduation Rate Report found that nationally,

among public Division II schools, the graduation rate was 45 percent with athletes graduating at 54 percent. Retention studies by the Offi ce of Institu-tional Research and Planning show male athletes at Shippensburg graduated at 55 percent and those receiving athletically related fi nancial aid graduated at 54 percent. In addition, female athletes graduated at 79 percent and those receiving athletically related fi nancial aid graduated at a rate of 81 percent.

Since 1975, 44 athletes have earned Academic All-America honors and four athletes have earned NCAA Postgraduate scholarships. Many more of Shippensburg’s fi ne athletes have been nominated for these and other regional and national honors.

Although the academic standards are stringent at Shippensburg, the 20 athletic teams have won about 60 percent of all their contests since 1975. Twelve university teams have won 56 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championships in the same period.

Bertie LandesHead Coach11th seasonLock Haven ‘70

Lady Raider head coach Bertie Landes has established the mod-ern tradition of fi eld hockey excellence at Shippensburg University and cultivated a consistent and winning formula that has been nurtured over the last 10 years. She has won at least 12 games in every season at Shippensburg and never lost more than eight games during her tenure as Shippensburg’s head coach.

Landes is the 15th winningest coach in NCAA fi eld hockey history, having recorded 338 victories in 29 years as a head coach at Shippensburg and Philadel-phia Biblical. Among active fi eld hockey coaches at the Division II level, Landes ranks second only to Bloomsburg’s Jan Hutchinson in career victories.

She begins her 11th season as the head coach of the Shippensburg fi eld hockey team. While at the helm of the Lady Raiders, Landes has won more than three-quarters of her games, posting a record of 159-50-1 through 10 seasons. She has been named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Coach of the Year three times in 1999, 2003 and 2005 while earning National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) South Region Coach of the Year honors twice in 1999 and 2005.

Just last season, Landes guided the Lady Raiders to the national semifi nals for the third time in school history after earning the program’s fi rst-ever NCAA tournament victory at IUP. The Lady Raiders posted an 18-5 record, the best mark in three seasons, while having three players named to the Longstreth/NFH-CA All-America teams. The fi eld hockey program has had 13 unique All-Americans while under the direction of head coach Bertie Landes and has had 20 total selections since 1999.

In 2005, Landes was selected as the 2005 Dita/Na-tional Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II South Region Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Raiders to a school-record 20 wins and the programs’ fi rst-ever PSAC Championship. It was Landes’ third coach of the year award as she was also voted PSAC Coach of the Year and NCAA Di-vision II Coach of the Year by womensfi eldhockey.com. She also earned NFHCA South Region Coach of the Year honors in 1999.

Not only did Landes coach her team to a conference title and a 20-win season, but her Lady Raiders were ranked No. 1 in the NFHCA Division II Coaches’ Poll for the entire season. Her team was a national semifi nalist and played host to the NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championship. Shippensburg also set a new school and conference record with 108 goals that season, surpassing the old mark of 100 set by the 2003 team that also advanced to the NCAA semifi nals. The Lady Raiders led the nation in scor-ing all season long and fi ve of Landes’ players earned either First or Second Team All-American honors.

In 2004, Landes guided the Lady Raiders to a 16-6 overall record and an 11-3 mark in the PSAC which tied them with Bloomsburg and Indiana (Pa.) for fi rst-place in the regular-season standings. As a result, the team advanced to the NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championship for the second con-secutive season before losing to Indiana (Pa.), 2-0, in the quarterfi nals.

Shippensburg has competed in the PSAC Field Hockey Championship nine times in 10 years under Landes, including the last eight. The team has been in the championship game in 2003, 2005 and 2006. The team has also fi nished among the top three teams in the regular-season standings in eight of the last 10 seasons, including three-straight fi rst-place fi nishes from 2003-05.

In 2003, the Lady Raiders advanced to the NCAA Division II championships for the fi rst time in school history, but like the PSAC championship, lost to eventual national champion Bloomsburg.

In nine seasons with Shippensburg, Landes has amassed a record of 75-29 in the PSAC, a winning percentage of .721. Over the last fi ve seasons, she has won 54 out of 72 conference games.

Landes, who reached her 200th victory as the head coach at Shippensburg in 2005, reached her 300th career victory on Sept. 24, 2006 with a 5-0 shutout over Mercyhurst. She became the 19th coach in NCAA history among Divisions I, II and III to win 300 career games.

Her squads have always thrived academically. Last season, nine members of the fi eld hockey team were selected to the NFHCA Division II National Aca-demic Squad, bringing the program’s four-year total to 26. Additionally, Landes has coached the South squad in the NFHCA North/South Division II Senior All Star Game for three consecutive seasons, while 21 of her players have participated in the an-nual postseason game over the past fi ve seasons.

Lady Raider standout Dani Haas replaces Angie Loy as the team’s primary assistant coach while seeking her bache-lor’s degree in elementary education and a minor in coaching. Haas was an NFHCA Senior All Star and a three-time member of the NFHCA Division II National Academic Team.

Haas totaled 23 goals and 14 assists for 60 career points as a Lady Raider. She appeared in 76 games and made 50 starts, including all 43 games over her fi nal two seasons. Dani scored fi ve career game-winning goals.

Perhaps her most impressive campaign came as a senior, where her rock-solid defense and her intimidating presence on penalty corners helped her earn an award as an NFHCA Division II First Team All-American. She fi nished second on the team with 10 assists despite her position in back and completed her tenure as one of the most valuable and intimidat-ing defenders in school history.

Haas was a part of the fi rst PSAC Championship squad in school history when Shippensburg defeated Bloomsburg in 2005 and made three appearances in the NCAA Division II playoffs. During her playing career, Shippensburg recorded an overall record of 67-22 and averaged 16 wins per season.

2009 Roster

Lady Raider Field Hockey 11

Thirty years ago, a group of 15 fe-male athletes guided by Jane Goss hit the fi eld at Princeton Univer-sity and achieved something that no other Shippensburg team has ever been able to accomplish in any sport: win a team national championship. The 1979 AIAW Division III Championship squad earned a 1-0 victory over Franklin & Marshall and earned the right to call itself the best team in the nation.

Last season, the Shippensburg University fi eld hockey program achieved one of its greatest feats in program history with the school’s fi rst-ever victory in the NCAA Tournament. In 2009, the Lady Raiders will look to the highlights of past seasons with the hope that these previous feats can be used as building blocks to achieve even greater milestones.

The Shippensburg fi eld hockey program has won at least 12 games in each of the 10 seasons under head coach Bertie Landes and has consistently been one of the top 10 teams in the nation. In addition to eight consecutive PSAC Tournament appearances and fi ve NCAA Tournament appearances over the last six years, the Lady Raiders have maintained their role among the top teams in the conference and the South region.

One diffi culty will be the loss of one of its strongest senior classes in history. Kim Davies, Dani Haas, Carolyn Swift, Natalie Faith and Jenna Blain fi nished their Lady Raider careers having played in 393 career games and making 257 starts while combin-ing for 110 career goals. Two forwards, two defenders and one midfi elder have now moved on and the opportunity has emerged for new leaders to take their place.

The setting for victory remains treacherous in the ever-compet-itive PSAC, which has emerged

into one of the most legitimately competitive leagues in America. Shippensburg enters the season ranked second in the PSAC Western Division Coaches Poll behind IUP, while the likes of Bloomsburg, Kutztown and East Stroudsburg are making great strides.

The 2009 squad will once again be under the careful direction of Landes, the 15th winningest coach in NCAA fi eld hockey history. She begins her 11th season with the team and enters the preseason with 13 returning players. Seven seniors lead the list of veterans while as many as 35 players have been in preseason camp competing for spots on the fi nal roster.

“This group has bonded so well, and there is a sense of focus and purpose with this year’s group,” Landes said. “Our goals are obviously once again to earn a conference championship berth and make an NCAA Tournament berth, but those goals can be at-tained if this group reaches its full potential.”

FORWARDIt would be tough for any squad to make up for the departure of a program’s second-leading goal scorer in history, but the gradua-tion of Davies has Shippensburg attempting to do just that. Along with the graduation of Faith, a total of 82 career goals and 206 career points have departed the roster from just two players.

Bolstering the offense in 2009 will be sophomore Kristina Taylor, the 2008 PSAC Western Division Rookie of the Year and an All-PSAC West First Team forward who posted the second-best season for any freshman in program history behind Davies.

Taylor scored 14 goals and recorded seven assists for 35 total points in 21 games and was the woman responsible for the game-winning goal in Shippensburg’s classic NCAA Tournament win. She continues to work on her of-fensive game and her sensational stick work will once again be on display this season.

Senior Jamie Doughty also adds a veteran presence up front that can cage goals with the best of them. Doughty totaled seven goals and seven assists last season and was one of just seven players to start in all 23 games last season. She will be counted upon once again along the front lines.

Fellow senior Laura Wylde has continued to progress in her time with the Lady Raiders and will also provide some offensive punch. Wylde has 17 career goals and 41 career points to her credit and her experience will help Shippensburg this season.

Junior Amanda Strous has tallied six career goals in 34 games as a reserve forward and has really stepped it up during the pre-season. She will be a key fi gure in the forward rotation this season for Shippensburg.

Sophomore Katie Pufnock, the daughter of 1979 national champion Peggy Pribish Pufnock, made a strong impact last season with two goals and seven points in 18 games. She will be a contribu-tor up front as well this season.

A group of talented freshman will be vying to make an im-mediate impact. The group of new forwards includes Emily Kohlbus (York), Sam Langone (Lampeter-Strasburg), Jordyn Beam (Shippensburg), Kerry Senderling (North Penn) and Jena Hanebury (North Penn). All of these newcomers boast an incredible amount of talent, and the individuals that harness their ability the best could see a fair amount of playing time up front this season.

MIDFIELDThe loss of Carolyn Swift will be signifi cant, but a group of veterans will be stepping up this season. Senior Mariah Wooters stepped up and became a signifi -cant player for the Lady Raiders with valuable defense and a timely knack for pushing the ball up the fi eld. Wooters appeared in all 23 games last season and has 15 career points to her credit.

Senior Kim Tully returned to the team last year and displayed her impact with an All-PSAC West-ern Division First Team selection at midfi eld. She started in 22 of the team’s 23 games and her fi rst career goal happened to be the game-winner in the fi nal game of the regular season that put Shippensburg into the postseason.

A trio of talented recruits could make an impact this season and at the least will provide much-need-ed depth throughout the midfi eld. Taylor Jones (Mechanicsburg), Jamie Levy (Lower Merion) and Ashley Hallowell (Quakertown Community) are among the candidates vying for a spot this season.

Season Outlook

DEFENSEReplacing the defense of Dani Haas and Jenna Blain will be very diffi cult, but a talented mixture of veterans and up-and-comers will be ready for the transition this season. Among the leaders will be senior Lauren Hollingsworth, a stalwart back line player who truly came into her own last season while starting in every game.

Senior Lois Kaschenbach and ju-niors Kristen Brooks and Emily Fulton were reserves last season but all three players are compet-ing for a starting spot this season. Kaschenbach had 10 appearances and one assist last season, while Brooks has made 33 appearances over the last two seasons. All three players will be counted upon for signifi cant production this season.

Freshman Ashley Taylor (Cum-berland Valley) has led a strong group of freshmen defenders in camp. Taylor is expected to see signifi cant playing time this season, while Kayla Harshman (Palmyra) has also impressed the coaching staff and has earned playing time. Christina Gaudio (Upper Merion) and Amanda Burridge (Ephrata) will also be ready to compete at the next level. The defenders might just be the biggest highlight of a talented re-cruiting class that Coach Landes has mentioned is the most athletic in her tenure as SU’s head coach.

GOALKEEPERSenior Amanda Houser fortifi ed the cage last season en route to an All-PSAC Western Division Second Team selection. Her 18-5 record last season along with 112 saves were just some of the out-standing statistics she recorded, and her outstanding ability to make stick stops and blocker pad saves will make her a key fi gure in back this season.

Sophomore Alyssa Stefanadis and freshman Ciarra Delost will compete for the backup spot and playing time this season.

Lady Raider Field Hockey Ranked No. 4 In Preseason Division II Coaches PollThe Shippensburg fi eld hockey team was ranked at No. 4 in the preseason edition of the 2008 STX/NFHCA Division II National Coaches Poll. The Lady Raiders were the third-highest ranked program from the PSAC, behind only Bloomsburg and Indiana (Pa.).

The Lady Raiders have now consistently been ranked among the top fi ve teams in the nation during each of the past six seasons under Shippensburg head coach Bertie Landes. Since the start of the 2003 season, Landes and the Lady Raiders have won at least 13 games per season and totaled 84 victories over that span.

Shippensburg’s Kim Davies Named PSAC Western Division Player of the WeekSenior Kim Davies was chosen as the inaugural PSAC Western Division Player of the Week by the conference offi ce. Against Southern Connecticut State, Davies broke a 2-2 tie in the second half with what proved to be her sixth-career game-winning goal by scoring off a penalty corner in the 43rd minute. She added another goal less than four minutes later.

The next day against No. 6 Bentley, a team that made the national championship game just two years ago, Davies scored two goals for the second consecutive day, including the game-winner in the 27th minute to open the scor-ing. Of her fi ve shots on goal, four found the back of the cage.

Jamie Doughty Named PSAC Western Division Field Hockey Player of the WeekJunior Jamie Doughty earned her fi rst career PSAC Western Division Player of the Week award after completing a two-goal performance at Robb Sports Complex. Doughty helped the No. 3-ranked Lady Raiders defeat No. 7 Mansfi eld in a 7-0 victory by scoring two goals, includ-ing the game-winner, to give Shippensburg its fi rst PSAC West win of the year.

After Shippensburg had been knocked off by IUP earlier in the week, Doughty saw to it that it did not take long for the Lady Raiders to rebound as she scored the fi rst goal just 81 seconds into the game. Doughty was particu-larly effi cient as well against the Mountaineers, scoring her two goals on her only two shots of the game.

No. 4-Ranked Lady Raider Field Hockey Upsets No. 1 Bloomsburg, 3-2Senior forward Kim Davies scored two goals to lead the Shippensburg fi eld hockey team to a 3-2 upset victory over Bloomsburg in a PSAC crossover contest at Robb Sports Complex. Bloomsburg, the No. 1-ranked team in Division II, lost for the fi rst time since Oct. 27, 2007 in the PSAC Championship game. Shippensburg entered the game knowing that Bloomsburg had outscored its opponents by an impressive 62-3 margin, but remained undaunted and matched the output of the previous eight Husky opponents on one sunny afternoon.

Kim Davies Named PSAC Western Division Player of the Week For Second Time This SeasonKim Davies was named the PSAC Western Division Field Hockey Player of the Week fol-lowing her two-goal performance on Saturday in Shippensburg’s 3-2 defeat of No. 1 Bloomsburg. Davies netted the game win-ner against the Huskies to help Shippensburg earn its first home victory against Bloomsburg since the 2005 PSAC Championship. It was the first loss for Bloomsburg since October of last season.

Kristina Taylor Named PSAC Western Division Field Hockey Player of the WeekFreshman forward Kristina Taylor was named the PSAC Western Division Field Hockey Player of the Week by the conference after a three-goal week. She was the third different Lady Raider field hockey player to receive a weekly award this season.

Taylor scored two first-half goals, including her first career game-winner, to help the Lady Raiders earn a 4-1 victory over PSAC Western Division opponent Mercyhurst and extend the team’s winning streak to six. Earlier in the week, Taylor scored a goal on her only shot against Slippery Rock in a 6-0 victory.

Tully Scores Overtime Winner To Send Lady Raiders To Eighth-Straight PSAC TournamentJunior Kim Tully completed a two-goal comeback by scoring with 3:04 remaining in overtime to give the Shippensburg field hockey team a decisive 4-3 victory over PSAC Western Division op-ponent Mercyhurst that secured the team’s eighth consecutive trip to the PSAC Tournament.

Shippensburg finished its best regular season since 2005 with its seventh consecutive victory but in doing so had to withstand a severe test from Mercyhurst, who lost for just the second time at home this season and had previously defeated No. 1 Indiana (Pa.).

Trailing 1-0 in the first half, senior Dani Haas scored off an assist from junior Jamie Doughty. However, the Lakers responded with a pair of goals to take a 3-1 lead late in the half. A crucial tally came with just 17 seconds re-maining in the first half, as senior Kim Davies scored a goal off an assist from Haas.

The trip to overtime was made possible by Davies, who beat Mercyhurst goaltender Jen Macri. Junior Lauren Hollingsworth had the assist. Davies finishes the regular season with the second-most goals in a single season in school history, having totaled 26 through 20 games.

Davies Named PSAC Western Division Player of the Week For Third Time This SeasonKim Davies was named the PSAC Western Division Player of the Week by the conference once again; her third weekly award won by Davies this season. Davies scored in all three of Shippens-burg’s victories during the final week of the regular season and finished the five-day stretch with seven goals and one assist for 15 points.

Lady Raider Field Hockey Falls to No. 1 Bloomsburg In PSAC Semifinals, 7-2The Shippensburg University field hockey team put forth a vigilant effort against the No. 1-ranked Huskies of Bloomsburg in the semifinals of the 2008 PSAC Field Hockey Champion-ships, but the Lady Raiders could not overcome a two-goal deficit in the second half and dropped a 7-2 decision at Sports Stadium.

Shippensburg tied the score early in the second half when junior Jamie Doughty ripped in a loose ball off a shot from senior Natalie Faith. Unfortunately, senior Jamie Vanartsdalen responded less than one minute later with her 34th goal of the season to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead.

Bloomsburg extended the lead to 3-1 off a penalty corner, when Chelsea Due fired a shot past Houser off an assist from Ashley Miller. Undaunted, senior Kim Davies narrowed the Shippensburg deficit to one in the 53rd minute by tipping in a shot from Faith from inside the crease.

Davies Named PSAC West Player of the Year To Highlight Seven All-PSAC West SelectionsShippensburg senior forward Kim Davies was named the 2008 PSAC Western Division Player of the Year by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) to lead a group of seven Lady Raid-ers honored by the conference.

Additionally, freshman Kristina Taylor was named the PSAC Western Division Rookie of the Year and joined Davies as two of Shippensburg’s conference-leading six fi rst-team selections. Davies is the fi rst SU fi eld hockey athlete in school history to be chosen as a PSAC player of the year.

Seniors Carolyn Swift and Dani Haas earned their fi rst career all-conference honors with fi rst-team selections, while junior Chelsea Zook was chosen to the fi rst team after being selected as a second-team representative last season.

Junior Kim Tully was the re-maining fi rst-team selection for Shippensburg, who combined with IUP to complete the entire Western Division First Team. Junior Amanda Houser tied with Mansfi eld’s Brianna DeLuca as a second-team selection at goalkeeper.

Taylor’s Double-OT Goal Sends Lady Raiders Into NCAA Semifi nals With 2-1 Victory Over IUPIt took two overtime periods and more than 90 minutes of play, but the Shippensburg fi eld hockey team avenged two regular season losses to the Crimson Hawks of IUP with a goal from freshman Kristina Taylor in the 91st minute to give the Lady Raiders their fi rst-ever NCAA Tournament victory by a score of 2-1 at Miller Stadium.

Shippensburg got the goal from Taylor with 9:13 remaining in double overtime. The PSAC Western Division Rookie of the Year deftly defl ected a long through ball over the top of drawn-out IUP goalkeeper Lydia Dolly to send the Lady Raider bench into jubilation.

Defensively, junior Amanda Houser made 18 saves for the Lady Raiders. All of the Lady Raiders delivered outstanding performances, with particu-larly excellent midfi eld play from senior Carolyn Swift and great work along the back line from senior Jenna Blain.

No. 3-Ranked Lady Raider Field Hockey Program Drops 3-2 OT Decision to No. 1 BloomsburgThe No. 3-ranked Shippensburg fi eld hockey team took the No. 1 team in the nation to overtime in the semifi nals of the 2008 Division II National Champion-ships but could not hold off the top-ranked Huskies, dropping a 3-2 decision on a misty afternoon from Sports Stadium.

for her third goal of the game on a penalty corner opportunity by deflecting a shot from Chelsea Due into the cage.

The contest was the epitome of a Division II Championship con-test, with two of the best teams in the nation battling tooth and nail to the final whistle. Both teams constantly exchanged the territo-rial advantage and emotions were rampant before a raucous crowd of 447 fans at Sports Stadium.

“I’m really proud of where we’ve come,” said head coach Bertie Landes, whose Lady Raiders finished as national semifinalists for the third time in school his-tory after earning their first-ever NCAA tournament victory last weekend at IUP. “The passion and the purpose that we played with is unparalleled, and we played a very even contest against the best team in the nation.”

Shippensburg took a 2-1 lead with 22:51 remaining in regula-tion when senior Dani Haas blasted a shot into the cage off an assist from fellow senior Carolyn Swift on the team’s first penalty corner of the game. The Lady Raiders fought off a fevered at-tack from the Huskies until the 8:17 mark, when Bloskey scored her second goal of the game off an assist from Jamie Vanartsdalen to the tie the score at 2-2.

“We’ve come a long way from the beginning of the season,” Landes said. “I’ve been in coaching for 36 years, and this is the most fo-cused, hardest working team. I’ve been coaching at Shippensburg for 10 years, and this Bloomsburg team is the strongest I’ve seen in a long time, but today we went toe to toe with the best team in the nation.”

Field Hockey Program Earns Three Selections to 2008 Longstreth/NFHCA All-America TeamsShippensburg seniors Kim Davies, Dani Haas and Carolyn Swift were named to the Long-streth/NFHCA All-America teams. Davies and Haas received first-team honors while Swift was chosen to the second team.

The honors mark the first time since the 2005 season in which Shippensburg has had multiple first-team representatives on the NFHCA squads. The field hockey program has had 13 unique All-Americans while under the direction of head coach Bertie Landes and has had 20 total selections since 1999.

Davies, who earned her second consecutive selection to the first team, was the 2008 PSAC West-ern Division Player of the Year after finishing with the second-most goals in a single season in school history by totaling 28 through the team’s 23 games.

She is just the third different player in SU history to total at least 20 goals in a season, and fin-ished just two goals short of the school record of 30 in one season that was set by Ashley Watt in 2005. For her career, Davies is second in school history with 72 goals and 171 points, having played in 88 career games and making 74 starts.

Haas totaled 23 goals and 14 assists for 60 career points as a Lady Raider. She has appeared in 76 games and made 50 starts, in-cluding all 43 games over the last two seasons. Dani has five career game-winning goals to her credit, was second on the team this sea-son with 10 assists and one of the most valuable and intimidating defenders in school history.

Swift appeared in 75 career games and made 51 starts, including 43 consecutive dating back to the start of the 2007 season. Swift finished with 12 points this season, having scored two goals and recorded eight assists. She has also scored five career goals. Her leadership and valuable presence in the midfield has been integral to the success of the Lady Raid-ers.

Shippensburg finished the season as national semifinalists for the third time in school history after earning its first-ever NCAA tour-nament victory at IUP. The Lady Raiders posted an 18-5 record and have compiled a .760 winning percentage under Landes over the last 10 seasons.

Nine Lady Raider Field Hockey Players Named to 2008 NFHCA Division II National Academic SquadNine members of the Shippensburg University field hockey team were recognized by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) with selections to the 2008 Divi-sion II National Academic Squad. The Lady Raiders have had 26 award winners from 2006-08.

Three Lady Raiders, seniors Kim Davies, Dani Haas and Carolyn Swift, were recognized for the fourth consecutive year by the NFHCA. Other student-athletes recognized included senior Jenna Blain, sophomore Kristen Brooks, junior Jamie Doughty, junior Lois Kaschenbach, sophomore Erica White and junior Laura Wylde.

The National Academic Squad recognizes student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2008-09 academic year.

36 Shippensburg University

30 Years of Champions

The 1979 Shippensburg University fi eld hockey program, under the guidance of Jane Goss, is the fi rst and only Shippensburg team to win a national title. With a 16-2-3 record, the Lady Raiders set numerous school records and survived four games in the fi nals of the national championships to claim the triumphant title.

The team set the school record for most wins in a season with 16. That mark was not tied until 1992. The Raiderettes also set the school record for most shutouts in a season with 14 – a mark that still stands today – along with consecutive shutouts in a season with seven. Three of the shutouts came in the four-game national championship fi nals.

Defense was the key to success. An example of that was in the fi rst round of the national champion-ship fi nal when Shippensburg beat Lynchburg 1-0. Shippensburg did not allow a single shot to be taken by Lynchburg.

During the entire seven-game AIAW tournament, including the three games played at the Mid-Atlan-tic Regional, Shippensburg allowed only one goal during regulation or overtime play. The seven goals scored against Shippensburg at the regional were the result of penalty strokes used to resolve tie games.

Shippensburg made it to the PSAC championship fi nal but lost to Lock Haven, a squad competing at the Division I level that was ranked fourth in the country and had beaten Penn State during the regular season.

The only other loss was in the AIAW Regional fi nal, when Shippensburg lost to Franklin & Marshall 4-3 in a shootout after the two teams played to a score-

less tie during regulation and overtime. Two teams advanced from each regional, and Shippensburg ex-acted its revenge in the national championship game.

Six contributors to the team are in the SU Athletic Hall of Fame (Fichter, Wilcox, Miller, Maddock, Pribish and Goss). Dorothy ‘Dee’ Fichter-Cross, the Field Hockey News “Player of the Year” for the AIAW Division III, scored 17 goals during the season. That record was not broken until Melissa Nash scored 18 goals in 1994.

History

Field hockey is the second oldest sport for women at Ship pens burg Uni ver si ty. It was organized prior to World War I. From 1918-40, the team was relegated to in tra mu ral status with the exception of a few years during the 1920’s when the team engaged in some in ter col le giate com pe ti tion.

During World War II, the team invited outside com pe ti tion on campus for what was then known as “Play Days.” In 1944, a regular in ter col le giate schedule was revived.

Shippensburg enjoyed an undefeated season in 1967, winning fi ve games with one tie. The team went un- de feat ed in 1968 with a record of 8-0 and the Lady Raiders’ undefeated streak came to an end in 1969 at 20 games (18 wins, 2 ties). In 1971, the team was undefeated again with a mark of 5-0-3.

In the mid-1970’s, an un de feat ed streak was es-tablished at 27 games without a defeat (22 wins, 5 ties). Ship pens burg was 9-2-3 in 1976, winning fi ve and tying three times in its last eight games. Led by freshman star Dorothy Fichter, Ship pens burg was 11-0-2 in 1977 and 9-4 in 1978.
