Praying Through the Produce Aisle

Fruit is an amazing thing. It takes on almost every conceivable size, color, texture, and taste. Fruit can be large

or small; red, blue, yellow, green, or any combination; pitted or smooth; and sweet, tart, juicy, or tangy. But

for all the many differences, fruit everywhere in the world has one thing in common—it holds seeds. The very

definition of fruit, according to Merriam-Webster, is “the part of a plant that has the seeds in it.”1 When we

look at Genesis 1:11, we find that definition literally goes back to the beginning of time, “and the fruit tree

yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself” (KJV).

People have a lot in common with fruit. We, too, come in almost every conceivable size and skin tone. Our

personalities have varying textures, and we all leave a unique flavor in the lives of the people we spend time

with. But for all our many differences, people around the world have one thing in common—the need of a

Savior. Romans 3:23 tells us, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (KJV). Every person

on earth needs to hear the Good News of Jesus.

So what does all this have to do with the produce aisle?

The produce aisle is a fascinating place. Samples of food from far-away corners of the earth are piled in bins

and lined up in neat rows. Have you ever considered turning the produce aisle into a science lesson? How

about a history and geography lesson? What about a life lesson in changing the world? Here is a way you can

do all three.

Before you visit the grocery store or produce stand, explore a fruit (or vegetable) you know you will find there.

Consider the following questions. Older students may enjoy answering them on the themed notebooking pages

included in the packet. Younger students may enjoy simply hearing about the facts you discover and coloring

the picture of the fruit or vegetable.

Science Facts

Step #1: Identify if the food is a fruit or a vegetable.

Step #2: Explore what types of climates and soil it grows best in.

Step #3: Determine how new plants are begun, if they are started by seeds or another method.

Step #4: Identify any other special or interesting characteristics of the food. For example, the strawberry is not

truly a berry, it is rich in vitamin C, etc…

History and Geography

Step #1: Identify what countries the fruit or vegetable is grown in.

Step #2: Choose a country to learn more about.

Step #3: Ask basic questions about the country you’ve chosen. Where is it located? What countries and/or

bodies of water border it? What is the capital of the country?

Page 4: Copyright © 2014 by Bonnie Rose Hudson

Life Lessons

Step #1: How many people live in the country you chose to study in history and geography? What are some of

the people groups who live there?

Step #2: What is the religion of the majority of people living there? What percentage of the nation’s population

is Christian?

Step #3: What languages do the people of the nation speak? What languages have had the Scriptures translated

into them?

Step #4: What are some of the various prayer needs of the people?

There are various resources for finding the answers to the questions above. Encyclopedias and maps can an-

swer most of the science, history, and geography questions. Resources such as the Joshua Project, the Ethno-

logue, and Operation World can answer many of the life lesson questions.

Once you’ve studied a type of food in this way, it becomes much more than a tasty fruit or vegetable. It

becomes a window into another world and a reminder to pray for the people who live there. I’ve included

some notebooking and coloring pages to get you started exploring.

I hope you and your family enjoy discovering more about the fruits and vegetables you enjoy and take every

opportunity to pray through the produce aisle!
