havinG just returned from a dealer conference in Chicago, Morgana Systems M.D. Quen Baum announced that sales in the U.S. for the six months to June 2010 were significantly ahead of the same period last year. “We had intended to launch our Pro range – first seen at IPEX – to the North American market at Graph Expo in October”, he explained, “but existing stocks had sold out and we had to bring the date forward – hence the quickly arranged dealer meeting.”

With a similar story in Europe, where sales in France over the same six month period exceeded the total for 2009, production at Morgana’s Milton Keynes factory will now be at full capacity until October at least and additional staff has been taken on.

“The Chicago event was attended by 22 dealers and was a great success” said Quen Baum. “There was a lot of enthusiasm for the Pro range with its greater productivity and Smart-Screen ease of use and in the week since the conference we have taken firm orders for nearly $500,000 worth of equipment”

The Morgana Pro range consists of two new AutoCreaser models, the DigiFold and DocuMaster Pro and an entirely new innovation in the shape of the AutoFold Pro which combines with any creaser – not just Morgana machines – to form a complete creasing and folding station. The entire range was shown in Chicago backed up by all the marketing collateral needed for sales and presentation. For further details contact Morgana Systems, tel 01908 608888

almosT a year to the week after they had their very first HP latex printer installed, nationwide digital print centre JKN Digital have become the first UK company to purchase and install the latest HP Scitex LX800 printer through large format reseller City & West End Solutions.

The3.2m HP Scitex LX800 was installed at their Preston site in July, joining their existing latex family of two LX6550 and two LX2550 printers. Peter Nicholls, MD of JKN Digital was invited by CWE Solutions to the product launch event in Barcelona which was held prior to the FESPA show. He was so impressed by the advancements and refinements HP had made, he placed an order immediately on his return.

He explains, “The functionality on the new and existing products provides us with the tools to add flexibility and speed that would increase our production output and service offering massively. By having a machine in-house that can offer 3.2m wide, dual-roll printing and is able to print one off jobs without de-webbing, means our ROI is realised

a lot faster than some of the other printers we looked into.”

In addition to the new features, JKN Digital’s business has evolved with the advent of this greener technology; moving away from direct print and solvents and embracing benefits such as the lack of waste on rigid media, recyclability and excellent print quality on a massive range of media.

The HP Scitex LX800 uses water based HP latex inks, producing prints that are odourless, eco-friendly and said to be scalable for printing graphics up to 3.2m (126in) in width, with production speeds of up to 88m2 per hour.

From an excellent start to 2010, Peter says, “Our

aim is to continue to increase production but also push the business forward into market-sectors we previously didn’t have the flexibility to approach.”For more information contact JKN Digital on 01772 722735 or email [email protected].

Duplo short listed for marketing accoladeDuplo UK has been shortlisted for the B2B Marketing Awards 2010. The print fi nishing supplier received the nomination in the ‘Best Product Launch Campaign’ category for the launch of their Alpha Saddle.

This year’s winners will be announced and trophies awarded at a glittering gala dinner to be held on November 25 at the HAC in the City of London. Duplo face competition with other nominees including Microsoft, LinkedIn, Nectar and RBS.

Duplo created a unique sample box containing 5 different booklets, all finished on the Alpha Saddle, ranging from an A4 landscape, right down to an ultra-small 90 x 95mm book. If the samples weren’t memorable enough, the method of delivery certainly was. Dressed to impress, Duplo staff visited over 150 of the top UK printers to hand deliver the sample packs.

One of the recipients, Gary Marchant of Lynhurst Press commented: “We were surprised to say the least to see our Duplo sales rep arrive at the door dressed for a cocktail party, however it was something we will not forget and has highlighted to us the number of customers who are asking for A4 landscape booklets. We have been customers of Duplo for over 10 years and continue to be impressed with the quality of their products and service and also by the innovative ways they market them to us.”

The campaign achieved 60 demonstrations at IPEX, leading to fi ve sales, generating over

£700,000 in orders. Marketing Manager at Duplo International, Peter

Jolly commented: “Having won numerous awards as a manufacturer, it is fantastic to be nominated for awards in regards to the way we market these products. The Alpha Saddle launch was a great challenge for us, and something new to Duplo, however the end result has been far beyond our initial expectations and has set the bar for future product launches.”

Earlier this year, Duplo received recognition for its 10 Year Award as an Investor in People, as well as being listed in the Sunday Times Best Companies to work for in the ‘One to Watch’ category. www.duplouk.com, tel 01372 478205

PICT a winner in London to Cambridge cycle ride

malcolm Lane-Ley and a team of cyclists from PaperCo and Howard Smith Paper Group have raised over £4,500 for the Paper Industry Charitable Trust (PICT) and Breakthrough Breast Cancer after completing a strenuous 60 mile cycle between London and Cambridge.

Malcolm Lane-Ley is President of PICT. It is a role that complements both companies corporate responsibility stance. PICT has played a role in providing assistance to members and their families in times of special need for many years and is now expanding its remit to include support for educational ventures linked to the trade and schools. As the organiser of the bike ride was promoting Breakthrough Breast Cancer it was deemed fair to split the money raised 50-50 between the charities.

Malcolm Lane-Ley says: “I decided to continue the tradition of a sporting themed fundraising event but not being built for marathons (except eating them) I decided a cycling event was more fitting. A few other victims, er volunteers, were required and in no time colleagues David Darwood (Precision Publishing) along with Robin and Ben Watkinson (WebCo) were signed up.”

The cycle started at 8.30am with 4,500 riders sent off at timed intervals. Despite initial congestion the pace soon settled down and the atmosphere and event which took place in splendid sunshine with a refreshing wind carried the intrepid crew along and through the finishing line at 4pm.

“As we got to the final ten miles the tiredness was evident but the camaraderie and adrenaline carried us along. Thankfully the final stages were nice flat roads and the ride to the finishing line was a little easier on the legs, The feeling going across the finishing line was fantastic. We had achieved our goal and had averaged 12mph in the saddle, excluding resting time. I quite fancy doing it again.”

Of the money raised £1,000 was from individual staff donations and the rest from support within the trade. It is not too late to boost the total by e-mail to Martin Webster, head of marketing services at Howard Smith [email protected]

Konica Minolta colour bizhubs get the full monty from BLIKonica Minolta colour multifunctionals have received outstanding recognition in the prestigious Buyers Laboratory Inc Summer 2010 ‘Pick’ awards honouring outstanding A3 multifunctionals, with Konica Minolta earning the coveted awards in mid to high-speed range.

The Konica Minolta bizhub C652/C652DS, C552 and C452 underwent a combined 600,000 impressions of durability testing by BLI with a total of just six misfeeds and no service required. In fact, the flawless reliability performance of the bizhub C452 was the best among business colour models in its speed range since late 2005.

Superior image quality is another hallmark of the award winning bizhubs. “Colour print quality is a big differentiator for Konica Minolta, as unlike the majority of business colour models we test, all three of these models produced output that received high marks for both business graphics output and photographic image output,” said BLI Managing Editor Daria Hoffman. For more graphics intensive environments, an EFI Fiery controller is also available for all the devices.

The bizhub C452 also made an impact on BLI testers in terms of energy efficiency. It received an Outstanding Achievement award that BLI gives to the most energy efficient models tested in the past half year. Testers noted that the bizhub C452 features significantly lower than average projected annual energy consumption. It also uses a lower than average amount of energy in most running and non-running modes tested. BLI pointed out that users can set the device to its lowest energy using modes without sacrificing productivity, as the bizhub’s recovery times from energy save and sleep modes are significantly below average, too.

For Konica Minolta Business Solutions (UK), Wayne Snell, Group Product Manager, said “We’re delighted to have achieved the new awards from the BLI 2010 Summer Picks. Last year we also won the BLI Pick award for the bizhub C220, C280 and C360. You could say we now have won the full monty! As an independent evaluator of business equipment, BLI’s awards are highly prized and well respected so this is an outstanding independent endorsement of Konica Minolta’s colour, mid to high bizhub range.Konica Minolta Business Solutions (UK) Ltd., tel: 01908 200400, e-mail: [email protected], web: www.konicaminolta.co.uk

FirsT impressions are important and Heiko Goetz, owner of MTex Goetz + Goetz knows how to create a good one. Customers entering his print shop are greeted by a large showroom where a gallery of impressive prints and applications are on display. Originally founded as a print shop for textiles, apparels and “just a few” large format prints, over the last nine years MTex has evolved into a well respected print shop in the Hamburg region, with a reputation for high quality large format prints and innovative applications.

The company’s growth and market reach was further boosted when MTex invested in the new HP Designjet L25500 Printer. “When we heard about the new HP Latex technology and specifically the HP Designjet L25500 Printer, we had to try it for ourselves. We wanted a replacement for our solvent printer that offered the same or even better quality for photographic printing, yet without the environmental issues,” explains Heiko Goetz, owner, MTex. “As the machine requires no special ventilation and the inks contain no HAPs * it has created a much healthier working environment for my employees, who immediately commented on the improvement in their working conditions.”

The L25500 is capable of printing a wide range of applications – from

indoor point of purchase displays, exhibition graphics and interior décor like wall murals and fabrics to outdoor banners, bus shelters and vehicle wraps. In addition, the optimised media selection offers 19 substrates, including seven recyclable substrates and several PVC free alternatives. HP even offers a free, convenient programme for recycling Original HP ink cartridges and printheads and prints produced on HP recyclable media.

“The printer’s high speed and the ability to print on various media including photo paper, canvas, films and textiles were a decisive factor in our decision. We have been looking for a large format printer that can do anything and everything that is required by our customers,” said Goetz. “We no longer have speed or quality issues and our customers are more than delighted when they receive their jobs.”

The outstanding image quality of up to 1200 dpi and wide colour gamut helps to create eyecatching graphics with rich hues and vibrant tones. The prints also have a durability and display permanence of up to three years outdoors without lamination comparable with eco-solvent inks. Printing with odourless water based HP Latex inks can be applied to indoor and outdoor applications. Latex inks are environmentally friendly and reduce or

eliminate many of the health and safety issues of conventional solvent and eco-solvent printers. Integrated heating and drying units help ensure that prints are instantly dry and can be processed instantly thus shortening turnaround times.

These attributes helped MTex secure jobs, which it could not previously have won. The company recently won the job of printing a series of in store graphics for Porsche. “Several print service providers were asked to print a night time image of a Lamborghini racing through an Italian town, showing the reflection of a Madonna on its bonnet,” explained Goetz. “We printed the tests using our L25500 on several different substrates. The customer was speechless on seeing the depth of the black, the vivid colours and consistent, high quality print across all of the substrates. It won us the prestigious job hands down.”

Speeds of up to 22.8sqm/h and a maximum resolution of 1200 x 1200 dpi as well as HP’s Double Swath technology result in elimination of swath-to-swath banding and accurate and vivid images, with a fast turnaround time. In addition, the machine maximises uptime by offering user replaceable printheads.

On one occasion Goetz recalls that a group of photographers were looking

for a new print service provider that could offer fast turnarounds whilst maintaining an extremely high, photographic quality output. MTex’s new L25500 printer exceeded expectations, and now the company prints exclusively for this group of photographers. Recently MTex won the account to print for Photohaus, an art gallery, gaining the artists trust enough to allow them to print and distribute orders direct to their customers.

The L25500 has revolutionised MTex’s business, allowing it to break into new markets by being able to offer innovative applications and high-quality prints with environmental credentials.

“We have been printing everything and anything on the L25500 including textiles, films, backlit and cast vinyl and all the results have been stunning — be it car wraps, motorbike helmet prints, backlit and other applications. We have not found anything that it can’t print with stunning results,” continues Goetz. “I predict that anyone who runs more than a pure copy shop will love this machine. The ease of use, high-quality and environmental friendliness, as well as longer lasting printheads, are just some of the benefits that have resulted in a constantly growing customer base at our company.”

Duplo International & Fujipla Europe Announce New UK Partnership

in a significant product development, Konica Minolta Business Solutions has launched the bizhub C35, a compact A4 colour multifunctional that will be available to customers on a cost per copy price plan from Konica Minolta direct and through its authorised dealership network.

The new bizhub C35 offers all the sophisticated functionality of the outstanding bizhub colour range, but with a small footprint making it ideal where space is at a premium. With its print, copy, scan and fax capabilities as standard, the multifunctional bizhub C35 can serve as a single, central hub for small businesses and workgroups. Output speed is 30 pages per minute for both colour and black and white. The bizhub C35P is a print only variant of the bizhub C35, for customers who do not require the scanning, faxing or copying facilities.

To simplify complex print jobs the bizhub C35 features Konica Minolta’s unique Emperon™

print technology. The Emperon™ controller has an 800MHz processor, and standard 1.5GB RAM with a 120GB hard drive and PCL, PostScript, XPS and PDF 1.7 support. For network connectivity standard gigabit Ethernet is supported with the added flexibility of USB 2.0 peer-to-peer connection.

The highly productive bizhub C35 has a first page out speed of under 13 seconds for network printing and copying. Full 30 page per minute productivity is maintained for copying from the ADF and duplex output. Print quality is excellent thanks to the use of Konica Minolta’s patented Simitri HD polymerised toner. With smaller, smoother, more uniform toner particles Simitri HD allows fusing at lower temperatures and produces high quality images with a wider colour gamut.

Document scanning is fast and simple to email, FTP, HDD, SMB and USB. Scan formats include PDF and compact PDF, XPS as well as TIFF and JPEG. The Super G3 fax functionality includes analogue and PC fax capabilities, with convenient sending and receiving of faxes via the PC.

Standard paper capacity is 250 sheets from the main drawer plus a 100 sheet bypass. This can be increased with an optional two further paper drawers, each with a 500 sheet capacity. Paper sizes from A6 to A4 and paper weights between 60 and 210gsm are supported.

For efficient management of the bizhub C35, Konica Minolta’s PageScope Enterprise Suite is available providing a suite of integrated software applications and utilities. www.konicaminolta.co.uk

KONICA MINOLTA’S BIZHUB C35 OFFERS COST-EFFECTIVE A4 OUTPUT

DUPLO LAUNCHES NEW FEATURE-RICH BINDER

Duplo International has officially announced the launch of the DB-280 Desktop Perfect Binder which features case binding for hardcover books; a first time in their entry-level range. The machine, previewed at IPEX, is an updated model of the popular DB-200 of which Duplo have sold over 1,000 units since its launch in 1999.

The new entry-level DB-280 is a compact, single clamp perfect binder capable of tape binding, padding and case binding as well as perfect binding. It also comes with a double pass notching feature, which allows deeper glue penetration and gives a stronger bind.

“The new DB-280 is an extremely significant launch for us. Whilst in recent years we have expanded our binding range upwards, with the introduction of the DPB-500 hotmelt and PUR models, our desktop binders are extremely relevant and still in massive demand with the trend toward shorter runs,” comments Peter Jolly, Marketing Manager, Duplo UK. “The machine features all the automated precision features of the popular DB-200, ease of use, accurate output, good adhesion with some nice additions that make it hugely relevant for 2010.”

The binding process includes a double pass over the unique notching system to ensure excellent glue penetration. The DB-280 now uses a wider notching blade that will cut deeper and wider notches into the book block to enable the glue to penetrate further into the grooves, this in turn creates a stronger bind.

The DB-280 features two glue drums which provide additional glue capacity. Combining this with a wide notching tool results in a more durable bind.

The DB-280 is able to produce an array of applications. Soft cover binding, case binding, tape binding and padding can all be created with a quick push of a button. Both tape binding; binding loose sheets with a strip of tape, and case binding; loose sheets together directly onto a hard cover, are new to the DB-280.

The new features come as a result of extensive market research amongst Duplo’s dealers and end-users.

“We took our time to get the product right. Our customers were telling us they wanted a stronger bind with a wider capability of applications to meet the increasing demands of the print buyers. However, they were keen to point out they liked the usability of the old model, where you do not necessarily need to be a skilled bindery expert to run the machine.”Peter concludes “As a result we have produced a binding solution that is ideal for those printers with consistent but short run binding work, helping them save on unnecessary outsourced cost. We also believe that the DB-280 can feasibly be run by press operators, helping alleviate bindery ‘bottle necks’, as the finishers just need to apply a final 3 knife trim.”

The DB-280 retails at £6,495 and includes a dust extractor to cater for the extra notching capability.Duplo UK 01372 478 205 www.duplouk.com

Duplo International has been named as a new UK distributor for Fujipla laminators. The Fujipla deal means Duplo add another name to their already impressive line up of print finishing equipment from the likes of Eurofold, IDEAL, Uchida and of course, their own brand Duplo kit. Duplo plan to sell the Fujipla equipment through their UK dealer network.

Announcing the agreement, Angela Osborne, Head of Duplo’s newly created Digital Finishing and Office Division commented, “I’m thrilled to be adding the Fujipla products to our portfolio. Our dealers have been feeding back for a long time that they wanted a good laminator and now they’ve got it.”

Initially, Duplo will focus on marketing the multi-functional AL-MEISTER ALM3220 which offers single and double sided laminating as well as four edge trimming as standard. It can be loaded with a stack of sheets and will deliver a complete stack of trimmed laminates the other end in just a matter of minutes.

Mike Kilcoyne, UK Sales Manager for Fujipla Europe added “Duplo are one of the most respected names in print finishing. They have a reputation for cherry picking only the best products so it is a great

endorsement for Fujipla that they want to work with is. We know our laminators are reliable so this is a great deal for both parties.”For further information please contact: Duplo International, tel: 01372 468 131, www.duplouk.com

XeroX has announced two new additions to the mid range Xerox 6279 Wide Format Printer; an optional high capacity stacker and Xerox Freeflow Accxes software as a standard, no extra cost, feature.

The new high capacity stacker increases the output capacity of the Xerox 6279, allowing stacking of up to 400 prints as well as enabling customers to run the system unattended for

long periods of time. The second new addition is the Xerox Freeflow Accxes software suite; Accxes

Indexer, Copy and Control will now be standard on all 6279 multifunction products and Accxes Control standard on 6279 printer only devices. This leading range of Xerox software enables customers to manage workflow effectively between devices, route documents to the right device, manage print queues, as well as ensuring that colour files are printed only on a colour device, and black and white prints on a black and white device.

“Customers working in more demanding environments are requiring more capabilities from their investment.” said Howard Witt, Wide Format Manager, Xerox Europe, “The optional new high capacity stacker and standard Xerox Freeflow Accxes software further enhance the mid range Xerox 6279. Xerox continues to add features and capabilities to its wide format devices to enable customers to get the very most out of their products.”

Konica Minolta Business Solutions has launched the bizhub 423 series, with four new monochrome systems added to the bizhub mono multifunctional range. The bizhub 223, bizhub 283, bizhub 363 and bizhub 423 offer a mono output of 22, 28, 36 and 42 pages per minute respectively. Most significantly

the new bizhub 423 mono series also offer colour scanning as standard with comprehensive and flexible colour input functionality.

As true A3 multifunctionals each of the bizhub 423 series provides complete office communication support with print, scan and copy, as standard, and can

be optimised with Konica Minolta’s comprehensive range of office solutions, which enable the user to tailor and streamline each bizhub model to the specific demands of their workflow.

Efficient and flexible, the bizhub 423 series improves on Konica Minolta’s existing mono range and in fact shares a lot in common with the bizhub colour series, such as an improved and dynamic operating system, open API and a larger hard disk, now with 2GB RAM. The new models are also lighter and offer a smaller footprint than previous mono systems.

Each of the new models also has the capacity to scan up to A3 size originals in colour and black and white with a scan speed of up to 70 originals per minute. There is also inbuilt support for all relevant formats with scan to email, FTP, SMB, user box (HDD required), USB and TWAIN as standard, with the further options of JPEG, TIFF, PDF, compact PDF, XPS and compact XPS available.

The bizhub 423 series also features bEST, Konica Minolta’s bizhub Extended Solutions Technology, enabling the user to tailor and streamline each bizhub with ultimate input flexibility to meet the requirements of their workflow. For example the bizhub 423 series can be optionally upgraded to provide extensive document capturing and distribution capabilities such as OCR implementation and conversion to specific file formats such as PDF.

“We understand that colour output is not always required, but at the same time colour input via scanning can be essential to workflows”, commented Wayne Snell, Group Product Manager for Konica Minolta Business Solutions (UK). “The bizhub 223, 283, 363 and 423 have been designed with this in mind, and with numerous optional enhancements and support for extended applications, the bizhub 423 series are the perfect tools in any environment that requires versatile colour scanning with monochrome output.”Konica Minolta Business Solutions (UK) Ltd , tel: 01908 200400, [email protected], www.konicaminolta.co.uk

Autobookie wins SOTMcoveted CSN site of the month award for September

auTobooKie pro case sTuDyThe Autobookie Pro from Duplo was a timely addition to our Beta test site as we were faced with manually folding and stapling 12 double sided sheets of A4 with a very glossy cover.

We have used similar machines in the past but always experienced problems with gloss paper stock which have simply slipped in the rollers and jammed leaving us to finish the job by hand so in all honesty we expected the same problems.

However…this machine is speedy, easy to use and happily coped with the shiniest paper without a single problem. It is now installed in our finishing department in regular use and we may have a job to locate it when the test is over and we have to return it!

Most digital printers slow down considerably when folding and stapling on line which is fine if there is no other work in the queue, so with the Autobookie we can finish off line and keep the production line working at full speed.

We are thrilled to secure such an iconic venue as the Tate Modern.”

“We do understand, however, that there needs to be a very good reason to come to any print machine show, especially after an IPEX, and we believe the Finishing Alliance partnership is that reason. We have the widest range of automated and precise finishing equipment available under one roof. We encourage print companies to come along with their finishing needs and issues; as an Alliance we can find the right solution from all our ranges that suit specific requirements.”

Onsite will be a live ‘Finishing Alliance Zone’ showcasing an example of how the equipment within the three companies can work together to turn print into finished product.

Peter Morris, Managing Director at

THE HISTORY OF UCHIDAIn 1910 Kotaro Uchida founded Suitaigo the precursor to Uchida Yoko. The company sold surveying equipment, drafting and offi ce supplies, and developed original new products, establishing a business foundation for selling wholesale to retailers. In 1917 it became Uchida Yoko, and in

1925 entered into a domestic sales contract to market the Hemmi Bamboo Slide Rule which was to become its fl agship product, and until the electronic calculator age was an indispensable tool for engineers. Indeed it was the network built up in these early days that was used to enter the school market with science materials many years later.Following some years undergoing a ‘development

phase’ their fi rst Offi ce Equipment Catalogue appeared in 1927.I953 saw the development of an innovative new

product – the permanent marker – which was soon exported all over the world.1963 saw the company respond to the shift from

wooden to steel desks and the Toho Desk System was introduced. In 1968 Uchida worked on improving OHPs.1992 saw an award for their ergonomic

offi ce chair. It would seem that we may have been

using Uchida products under different names for some time.

CSMA visit Lloyds Research into specific insurance cover required for frontline print providers has been rewarded by our introduction to AXA through our brokers Lucas Fettes. We can now all ‘Go Compare’ with a non obligatory like for like quote, whilst having the opportunity of having our present policies reviewed for both short comings and unnecessary cover being paid for.

hisTorically members have paid over- the -top for requiring a

mixed off the peg policy to cover being part shop, part office and part industrial. Even a combined shop and commercial policy will need to be made to measure. Our members steering committee has highlighted cover required and options to be considered.

The saving in the tuning to actual requirements rather than fitting into a category of business that nearly describes some of your business activities can be substantial.

What is the worst policy? Paying for cover you do not need, or not being insured for risks required?

Most of the ingredients have been included from the feedback of our members steering committee. However we need to check our findings with a cross section of printers and suppliers to ensure we have not missed anything vital and to highlight any options required for consideration. Sharing best practice in all our research has proved that we can all benefit from each other.

Free panTone sWaTch GiFTOur Premier CS Insurance scheme is supplied by AXA through our brokers Lucas Fettes and Partners.

An initial marketing budget allows us to reward the members involved in the next stage of measuring our findings. We have secured a limited supply of Pantone swatch set gifts for print shops able to ‘Go Compare’ their existing policies with our proposed format. We will find cover being paid for non-existent risks and no doubt highlight a few shortcomings in existing inclusions.

A free broker service, direct from Lucas Fettes will offer a like for like comparison and point out any ‘for’s and against’ in comparison with our proposed group scheme.

Absolutely no obligation and you get to keep your free Pantone gift regardless of whether you take up your print bespoke policy or not. All we need is a copy of your existing business insurance policy to check we are on the right track.

csma ThinK TanK FeeDbacK noTeDInsurance is a minefield and if you don’t fit neatly into one category you can end up being over insured.

You must be adequately insured but why pay for cover for something you don’t need?

Shop windows for example – if you haven’t had a window broken in twenty years do you need that cover?

Despite the digital age you may still be entrusted with original artwork. What happens if it is lost or damaged? This cover is specific to our industry so we need an insurance scheme that has been created with ‘US’ in mind.

Some printers will have chemicals on the premises, others will not, so in the past you may or may not have been covered.

You need a policy tailored to your specific needs – fine tuned for YOUR business.

The cheque was presented this month during a visit to the Lloyds building which included a tour of the trading floors and the Adam room relocated in its original form from the previous site. An amazing comparison of architecture that reflects the tradition and history of the insurance industry,

Originally designed by Robert Adam in 1763 as part of Bowood House, the

Adam Room was inspired by a visit to Rome, leading Adam to create a look of classical antiquity.

Inside the Adam Room at Lloyd’s. The whole room was purchased by Lloyd’s and now provides a striking contrast with the post-modern architecture of the present Lloyd’s building.

Today Lloyd’s is the world’s leading insurance market, housed in an award-winning modern building in Lime Street in the City of London. Its origins, however, lay in the more modest surroundings of a 17th century coffee house.

In the 17th Century London’s importance as a trade centre led to an increasing demand for ship and cargo insurance.

Lloyd’s coffee house became recognised as the place for obtaining marine insurance. From its first beginnings in Edward Lloyd’s Coffee House in 1688, Lloyd’s has been a pioneer in insurance. Starting with its roots in marine insurance, Lloyd’s has grown over 300 years to become the world’s leading market for specialist insurance.

From 17th century shipping and Lord Nelson’s victory at the Battle of Trafalgar, through the devastation of the San Francisco earthquake in 1906, and on to the emergence of space satellite technology in the late 20th century, the story of Lloyd’s is both a long and an interesting one.

a GreaT many things have changed since then, more than just

the relocation of offices. The whole way we capture, present and publish images and information has been profoundly transformed. The majority of images taken are not printed at all, but shared electronically in many different ways. Once the office buildings were full of typewriters, and people walking back and forth with sheets of paper. Now the view from the incoming train is a sea of computer screens and ranks of people barely stirring as they gaze into cyber world.

The old print moguls may have moved out, but the new masters of the internet are there in their scores, crammed into every inch of space. It may be a brave new world, in

apparently solid construction, but its foundations are potentially very fragile. All our work is now dictated by instant communications, and we rely on it. But a lost link, a broken cable, a message not received, and all is chaos.

All of this high technology still relies on some very basic concepts. A small image snatched from the carriage window illustrates the contradictions. A huge crane, only one of dozens that lurch over the rooftops, is lowering an immense steel wall of many tons into a tiny plot that would otherwise be barely home for a rabbit. No doubt it has all been scientifically worked out, loading, leverage and stress on some computer simulation. It may be aiming for its plot by satellite navigation. But below, directly in its path, a workman is guiding

it into its final resting place with nothing more sophisticated than a length of string.

All the calculations in the world can’t prevent it ultimately swaying in the wind, and the only practical solution is a human being using judgement, balance and experience, to complete the task. That and a certain amount of nerve in this case as his only protection from certain oblivion potentially descending upon him is a ludicrously inadequate plastic hat.

The train moves on across the Thames and into Blackfriars station before I see the conclusion of the task, but I can only hope it was achieved safely. Although safety in the construction industry has moved on since medieval masons built the great cathedrals,

or the Victorians the railways and bridges, it does illustrate the dilemma of Health and Safety precautions. There are sensible precautions, but if we remove every conceivable element of risk, there is a real danger we would never achieve anything. Calculating risk, taking chances, are very much part of the human desire to experiment and therefore evolve. Taking risks, and accepting the consequences are very much a part of learning.

Fortunately our ancestors invented fire before the Health and Safety Executive otherwise we would still be hiding in dark caves.

There are those predicting that in the not too distant future all calculations will be done by artificial intelligence. But just as clever and capable machines have yet to introduce us to a life of leisure and wealth, I’m not sure it’s a future that holds a great deal of promise for the human race.

Had the workman with his steel slab on a lead got it all wrong he could easily have sent it crashing into one of those glass fronted offices, or perhaps dropped it on a cable taking out communications for a whole city block until another human comes out with a repair kit.

We are stuck with this dilemma weekly - not in a dramatic life-threatening way perhaps - but in a disruption of vital workflow when a machine comes to a grinding halt. Well actually not so much grinding, as you rarely get any obvious noises to let you know what part has failed. Now you get the ubiquitous error code, unfathomable to a mere mortal, and cause of a sharp intake of breath to an engineer. It does seem that the more sophisticated machines become, the more prone they are to be stopped, not by a major mechanical failure, but by a tiny piece of paper blocking one of innumerable sensors. It’s no good trying to tell it there is nothing to fret about, nothing will move till it’s sorted, and it will still come down to a human with those clever fingers that first learned to bang rocks together to make tools, to prize the offending item out of its hole.

The latest fashion for printers talking directly to manufacturers computers is all very well, but unless the problem can be solved remotely, it is not a lot of comfort when something goes wrong, as it usually does, on a Friday, and can’t be sorted till Monday at the earliest. Then there is the possibility of the printer’s software itself going down rather than the hardware. One of our plan printers seized up completely when it was offered too much information and couldn’t be restored until a magical code convinced it to stop trying to complete a task it couldn’t possibly complete.

I am rambling round the houses, as I usually do, but as ever in the direction

The Truth is in the PrintUp to Holborn to Canon’s London showroom, perched like an eagle’s nest on the edge of a tower block with a broad view of the city skyline. Bit of a nostalgic journey for me taking the stroll from Blackfriars, via Ludgate Circus, and past Fleet Street, where I started my professional career, fresh out of university, and where many of the newspapers and magazines of the day were still produced.. DIGITAL IMAGING

of this month’s subject, and the reason for my visit to chez Canon, I am to be introduced to the new 24 and 44 inch inkjets, the imagePROGRAF iPF6300 and imagePROGRAF iPF8300.

We tested the previous two-footer, the 6100, two years ago and although many people liked it, to be honest I was not a great fan. This was not because of the quality of the printing, which was magnificent, and the highly colour accurate 12 colour system it retained. No, the problem with the 6100 was the controls, what they like to call the interface, where the human meets the machine, and the issue being the machine always wins.

It’s not that I was unfamiliar with the Canon’s controls. I’d been operating a previous model, the 8400, for some time before, and that uses the same type of “one touch does all” toggle switch. This is probably fine if you do nothing else but use that system alone for selecting functions, working in a calm environment, and even then only once in a while.

But in print on demand you may have to change paper five times a day, and anything that is more than simple to use can be a frustrating liability. When it’s all too easy to make a mistake choosing options, it’s more likely to happen, and then there’s no going back. For probably very good safety reasons, the printer locks up and prevents you opening the hood or flicking the paper release lever until its gone through its due process even if you know it’s not going to like it and reject the load.

By the time you’ve done this a few times, and had a customer on the phone wanting to know when the print is going to be ready, you are starting to look around for a large axe to teach the printer a lesson. Or is that just me ?

Not surprisingly, the first thing I looked at on the new model was the control panel, and was pleasantly surprised to see that although the toggle switch is still there -I can guess tooling to redesign the whole console would have been too expensive - its major operating functions have been assigned to some sensible user-friendly buttons. In the pressure cooker of nearly instant print, a back button is a big help.

As before, the new printer will take both roll and sheet paper, with thicker paper, up to 500gsm being fed from the front, and the new controls should

surely help loading and aligning which were previously a chore. This will certainly help Canon gain more ground on market leaders Epson who have to be fair, a wider range of machines, and an established reputation with professional photographers.

Certainly, listening to Trevor Dodsworth, Head of Professional Marketing and Manager for these products, Gill Mussell, they are aiming aggressively for Epson on price and product. A wide-ranging brief on the European market overall indicated that the large format area has been relatively recession proof because of serving demand in a number of different specialities, including art, photography as well as signage and short term promotional advertising.

This has certainly been our experience at the coal face of copy shops in Brighton, but we have had the advantage of a solvent printer from Roland, enabling the production of banners and waterproof paper. No doubt Canon’s developing relationship with Oce will help their brand presence in this market.

Canon have always puzzled me in that, as probably the major manufacturer of cameras, they have not made more of their dominance in the world of imaging, alongside their printers. They seem to have been guilty at previous photographic shows of underselling their printers and scanners - perhaps to Epson’s benefit- and at print shows to have a token mention - “by the way we also do cameras”. Well now they seem to have made the connection.

The new direction is now Canon Capture and Print, and alongside the corporate presentation, was an opportunity to meet and compare notes with Clive Booth, a professional photographer using exclusively Canon products. With all due respect to the Canon personnel, it was Clive with his hands-on experience that was most interesting to listen to. A good call by Canon to put an independent voice in the mix, and one with a genuine innovative and inspirational display of images.

Of course having brilliant images to print from can flatter any printer, but it’s no different to the samples presented at any print expo which you know have been selected and worked on to produce absolute perfection. I’ve always

pointed out that the output from any quality printer was never really an issue compared to the quality of the input. A photographer with control of his printing is master of his art, much like the old darkroom days, and the direct personal feedback between pressing the shutter and the print button benefits both processes.

Clive shoots with top of the range Canon camera and lenses, using continuous lighting which helps the tonal range available. He also shoots entirely in RAW more, discussed here before, which gives him an additional advantage in precise control of colour, density and sharpness. He also was not shy of admitting that he generally preferred to print on Hannemuhle papers rather than the Canon media - an expensive choice not always an option in the high street. This professional investment

and expertise is beyond the scope of most copy shop customers, so the expectations of the printer to make that magical different to often very ordinary images is increased.

Refreshingly, he came up with a statement that was not a corporate dictate and could easily apply to any print and printer in our business in that a quality print is not only a satisfaction in itself but most importantly the only way of truthfully representing an image.

Good or bad, it’s the print that tells the true tale, which is why, thankfully for our business, there will always be a demand for it. No amount of multi-colour swap on internet sites, mobile phones and the like will faithfully reproduce the potential quality and accurate consistency of a professional print. Long may it be so.

International Paper secures EU Eco-label for Rey Adagio rangeinTernaTional paper, has

demonstrated its commitment to environmental sustainability by achieving EU Eco-label status for its Rey Adagio range of tinted papers.

The Rey Adagio tinted product range consists of a variety of pastel, deep and flouro tinted papers for use on laser and inkjet printing equipment, Rey Adagio is manufactured at International Paper’s

Saillat mill, a production facility renowned for its environmental excellence.

International Paper launched nine new shades in the tinted paper range earlier this year - Bonbon, Sky, Pistachio, Sand, Leaf Green, Spring Green, Cinnamon, Lavender and Pumpkin. Having the EU Eco-label accreditation now complements the Rey Adagio’s existing environmental accreditations, which include the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certifi cation (PEFC) Chain of Custody schemes, guaranteeing that a product is made from sustainably managed forests.

The EU Eco-label is a voluntary environmental label created by the European Commission, established in 1992 to encouraged businesses to market products and services that are kinder to the environment. Products awarded the Eco-label carry the flower logo to allow consumers to identify them easily. UK and Ireland country manager Mike Robertson says: “Having the Eco-label flower logo on the tinted range allows us to demonstrate how seriously International Paper takes our

commitment to the environment.”As part of the EU flower assessment criteria, manufacturers must also meet a

wide range of environmental and sustainable requirements. International Paper had to show the origin of all fibres as well as demonstrate that 10% of fibres are sourced from certified sustainable managed forests.

Being able to demonstrate environmentally friendly manufacturing techniques was key to gaining EU Eco-label status and International Paper’s Saillat production site is an environmental leader in this area with 85% of its energy requirements being met by the on-site production of green energy (biomass) due to its combined heat and power plant – This is significantly better than the paper industry average of 53%, according to the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI). The Saillat mill has also reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 78%, again beating the paper industry average of 27%.

The Saillat mill is a clear industry environmental leader, a fact endorsed by its environmental certifications, which include ISO 9001/2000, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) Chain of Custody and now of course the EU Eco-label.

Robertson concludes: “The EU flower is also extremely beneficial for showing customers that our tinted paper range is not only environmentally sound but also reflects that we have met a whole range of environmental criteria to achieve the status.”

The EU Eco-label logo will also appear on the new Rey Adagio packaging, which is scheduled to be available from October 2010 onwards. For more information on International Paper and its product ranges visit www.internationalpaper.com

presTon baseD GranThams is the first UK company to sign up as a reseller for IGS

UK’s Elements green series of wide format printing systems. The long established supplier of solutions for the display industry had been looking for more environmentally friendly options to suit its growing customer base, and the Atom 24 and Atom 44, which incorporate Epson MicroPiezo TFP print-heads, ticked all the boxes for durability, totally safe operation and cost effective ease of use.

Granthams was founded 114 years ago and is a supplier of sign making and display products throughout the country. A policy of only off ering the best solutions, for which full support is included, has led the company to gain a high reputation for sales and service with leading brand aqueous and solvent

based printers, consumables and accessories. The addition of IGS UK’s Elements range now satisfi es the demand for an essential green option for users wanting to produce durable displays.

Kirsty Reader, general manager of Granthams, states: “Our growing client list comprises large and small businesses, including many offi ces and organisations who want to produce their durable display print in-house. Until now this hasn’t been practical because of the odours and hazardous chemicals inherent in most solvent based printing systems.

“The Elements Atom 24 and Atom 44 printers, combined with H2O inks, matched Krypton Eco-Media and specially confi gured Chromium RIP, result in a neat, clean and green system

which produces high quality output onto a range of materials, including semi-rigids and, even aluminium composites,” Reader continues. “This turnkey solution also incorporates full support for users, plus minimal maintenance. We believe it is certain to appeal to fi rst time printer purchasers as well as those who want to incorporate eco-friendly options into their existing range of services.”

With size options of 610 mm (24 inches) and 1117.6 mm (44 inches), the Elements Atom duo is based on industry-proven Epson Stylus Pro printers, modifi ed to facilitate the use of Elements H2O’s proprietary outdoor durable heat-cured water based resin inks. Epson’s MicroPiezo TFP (Thin Film Piezo) technology ensures that precise dot placement is matched with high performance criteria and excellent print-head durability.

Managing director of IGS UK, Nick Wintle, adds: “Although we’ve only recently launched our Elements family of products, the interest has been exceptionally high from resellers eager to adopt a water based green wide format print solution. Granthams was fi rst past the post and we’re pleased to be working with such a high profi le, well established specialist.”

Denmaur launches new Amadeus Recycled rangeDenmaur Independent Papers recently held the launch of the new Amadeus Recycled range at one of London’s oldest and most prestigious wine merchants, Berry Bros and Rudd opposite St James’s Palace on 22 July.

Guests were greeted from 6.30pm in the wine shop, funnily enough with some refreshments, which included samplings of Italy’s finest red wine, Sassicaia, specially selected for the occasion.

The launch party was a partnership event between Denmaur Independent Papers and its long standing supplier, Italian paper manufacturer Burgo Group, producers of the new Amadeus Recycled range.

Denmaur Managing Director Mike Gee welcomed all guests, including overseas partners, members of the press and Martyn Eustace from the Two Sides campaign.

In his opening speech to celebrate the launch, Mike said, “This exciting opportunity has come about due to the increasing consolidation of larger groups in our industry, and their rationalisation of the suppliers and products they deal with. Sometimes, in my opinion, without enough consideration being given to the long-term relationships in place and the quality of the products on offer.”

“The Burgo Group, with its long history of papermaking and some 35 years experience in recycled paper production, has become a first class partner to Denmaur, a relationship which extends back over more than 25 years,” said Mike.

He continued, “Our long established Amadeus brand has already been very successful and as an extension of our relationship with Burgo we are now able to add a portfolio of excellent quality recycled products. These products will be available with different recycled percentages from 25% to 100% and in different finishes, from Gloss and Silk to Matt Triple Coated.”

The new Recycled range will be available in the following stock elements; 50% Gloss – 115-300gsm plus CutStar reels, 50% Silk – 115-350gsm, 75%

Matt – 115-150gsm, 100% Silk – 115-300gsm and 100% Offset 80-150gsm plus reels. Some items will be held in UK stock for immediate delivery and others supplied as indent. Amadeus Recycled is part of Denmaur’s Best of Both Worlds range and has high environmental attributes which include elemental chlorine bleached process (ECF), Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) chain of custody and ISO 14001 for manufacturing.

Mike pointed out that Denmaur were indeed one of the first UK paper merchants to gain environmental credentials in the paper industry, and the company continuously seeks to promote and sell environmentally friendly and recycled products. “As well as the coated product range we are also launching new uncoated products, which include both 50/50 and 100% recycled offset, further adding to the Amadeus offering.”

Whilst Denmaur’s roots are publishing papers based, Mike revealed that Denmaur has over the last two to three years expanded its activities gaining many new corporate, government and end user clients. “We believe that this project along with our partnering mills, will significantly further our expansion in these areas,” he stated.

“We realise as do most of us that the current economic conditions are not without their challenges, but Denmaur believe that papers with sound environmental credentials must form an important

part of a sustainable future. Denmaur will as always try to deliver these products in a competitively priced manner to the markets we serve.”

Burgo UK Managing Director Jeremy Martin said the launch of Amadeus Recycled was a “Major step” in the long-term relationship between the two groups. He said although the sector had changed in terms of distribution, the UK market was still one of the largest in Europe for recycled products. He said Amadeus Recycled was, “A huge leap forward” in terms of products for the recycled papers

market, and one that should fit every demand.Mike concluded by stating that Italy not only has a

fine history of papermaking, which he said was second to none in Europe, but is also famed for its fine wine and food production. The assembled guests then enjoyed the range of Italian fine wines on offer with an organised wine tasting, together with some Italian styled canapés.

A more comprehensive version of the Amadeus Recycled range swatch will be produced in time for the arrival of the new Amadeus Recycled stock in August/September. The swatch will also be available to view on Denmaur’s website, together with the technical specifications for Amadeus Recycled.

Denmaur Independent Papers Marketing Director, Peter Somerville said that, “With the major competitor products of fully coated recycled now all coming from a single manufacturing source, the launch of the new Recycled range gives Denmaur Independent the opportunity of continuing the company tradition of providing choice to the market and our customers.”

The guests then departed into the London evening each with a generous goodie bag, courtesy of both Denmaur and Burgo. For further information on Denmaur Independent Papers and its services, contact Denmaur Independent Paper’s Marketing Director, Peter Sommerville or visit www.denmaur.com

an environmentally sound paper that can be litho pre-printed and subsequently laser or inkjet over-printed is being launched by PaperCo.

9lives Preprint is manufactured in France at an ISO 14001 accredited mill using 100% post consumer waste and the product is FSC, NAPM and EU Eco label certified.

It is the ideal stock for hybrid printing jobs, typically used for business communications, transactional documents, corporate stationery, direct mail, flyers and reports.

“This is a paper that will be attractive to our Government, designer and printer customers because in addition to its ‘born again’ sustainability factors, it has a high bright white look, prints consistently well and gives good bulk and opacity,” says Charles Eaton, head of

marketing at PaperCo.“It is quite clear that both litho offset and

digital printing technology will continue side by side for the foreseeable

future and many printers now house both

technologies and are seeing an

increase in demand for

products which use both processes. This new addition to

the 9lives family fills this gap with a product that sustains the range’s reputation

for sustainability, printability and availability.”It will be available from member merchants

During his visit we discovered that they do not have a minimum order quantity which came as a pleasant surprise to us as we have been asked for small quantities of plastic cards in the past and been told it was not possible. They are a definite ‘find’, so if you have a customer who needs just a few cards call 01634 811455 and speak to Cheryl – you’ll be pleased with the profit you can make.

When it came to season ticket card holders it was a case of starting from scratch and hitting the internet, where we were lucky to find Ricky Humphrey of East Coast Plastics who helped us through the whole process even advising that the original style we requested was not the most practical. Needless to say we and the club were ‘over the moon’ with the results. Phone Ricky on 01692 403461

Lanyards – no problem! Preseli came to our aid there. Phone Dave or Mark on 01352 73006

And finally! Where else but Sense Creative for the fixture cards? Phone Tim on 08450 580579

O.K. we’re footie fans in the CSN offices but these are all great profit opportunities and we promise to gag the editor if he fills the magazine’s pages with too many ‘latest results’ during the current season.

CAFÉ BANNERS TAKE BLACKPOOL BY STORM!BLACKPOOL BY STORM!We talk to Shaun Bennett, Director, of Links Signs and Graphics about the café culture in Blackpool.

❝I was aware that the council had had European funding to help develop the areas where a lot of cafés were based, and that the traders were being encouraged to be involved.

I then heard about a trade show advertised in our local press being put on by a private consortium. It was aimed at the leisure industry and held in Blackpool. It made sense for us to have a presence there to support the show and also to promote ourselves. Local businesses were invited to attend the show and together with Plex Display Ltd., we demonstrated the Café Banner range to the traders.

Whilst exhibiting, one of the café owners, who noticed we were showing café barriers asked me ‘ did I know what the Council had instigated - you may be interested?’ At that point the owner explained what all traders had to do if they wanted to retain seating outside, which was to apply for defined areas outside their premises which must be sectioned off. Café Banners seemed to me to be the answer.

The owner of the Peppermill Café, an existing client, also showed interest in the Café Banner range and told me more about the rules and regulations on outdoor seating that had now been updated. All traders had been made aware of compulsory permits coming i n t o f o r c e should outdoor café and seating areas be used in the town. The council were introducing a scheme that incentif ied the traders in the first year.

I took the opportunity of recommending that c o m m u n i c a t i o n between the traders could form a small buying group leading to a collation of orders and the best possible pricing on the hardware. (This is what tended to happen for businesses trading on the same street).

Another way I secured orders was from businesses, who used their own Design Agencies and Branding companies, some were already existing customers, I made them aware of the packages I could offer and the orders came through recommendation.

Some customers had already seen the products at the show so had an idea

of what they were after and some have since ordered additional products.

To promote my business and secure the orders I took to the streets and went around quoting each individual job. In each instance, I took samples of both the Espresso and Primo posts so that customers could feel the weight, inspect the quality and decide on the best product to suit their needs – my customers loved it and so did I!❞

SALES DEMONSTRATIONA salesman was leaving the offi ce one evening when he found a product manager standing in front of a shredder with a piece of paper in his hand.

“Listen,” said the manager, “this is a very sensitive and important document here, and my secretary has gone for the night. Can you make this thing work for me?”

“Certainly,” said the salesman. He turned the machine on, inserted the paper, and pressed the start butt on.

“Excellent, excellent!” said the manager, as his paper disappeared inside the machine. “I just need one copy...”

QUICK THINKINgA salesman won a new Mercedes and was out on the motorway for a nice evening drive. The top was down, the breeze was blowing through what was left of his hair and he decided to open her up. As the needle jumped up to 80 mph, he suddenly saw fl ashing red and blue lights behind him. “There’s no way they can catch a Mercedes,” he thought to himself and opened her up further. The needle hit 90, 100... Then the reality of the situation hit him. “What am I doing?” he thought and pulled over. The policeman came up to him, took his licence without a word and examined it and the car. “It’s been a long day, this is the end of my shift and it’s Friday the 13th. I don’t feel like more paperwork,

so if you can give me an excuse for your driving that I haven’t heard before, you can go.”

The clever salesman thinks for a second and says, “Last week my wife ran off with a policeman. I was afraid you were trying to give her back!”

“Have a nice weekend,” said the offi cer

DO yOU NEED PET INSURANCE?

A man takes his hamster to the vet, and aft er a short look at the creature the vet pronounces it dead. Not happy with the vet’s diagnosis the man asks for a second opinion. The vet gives a whistle and in strolls a Labrador dog. The dog nudges the hamster around with its nose and sniff s it a couple of times before shaking his head. “There” says the vet,” Your hamster is dead”. Still not happy the man asks for a third opinion. The vet opens the back door and in bounds a cat. The cat jumps onto the table and looks the hamster up and down for a few minutes before looking up and shaking it’s head. “It’s defi nitely dead sir”, says the vet. Convinced, the man enquires how much he owes. “That will be £1000, please”. “A £1000 just to tell me my hamster is dead” fumes the man. “Well”, says the vet, “There’s my diagnosis, the lab report and the cat scan”.

PATERNAL ADVICE

The young son of a family of three balloons was still small enough for him to sleep with his parents in their bed. Then the time came when he became too big to fi t in the bed and his father told him to sleep in another bedroom. During the night the son was afraid and went back to his parents but could not fi t. He undid the knot in his father balloon to let out just a litt le air to make him smaller and create some space, then re-knott ed it. This didn’t quite work so he did the same to the mother balloon, still no joy, so he did the same to himself and eventually managed to snuggle in. The next day the father woke up and saw his son was back in bed with him and his mother and very angrily he said, “Son you’ve let me down, your mother down and worst of all you’ve let yourself down.”

TOO TRUE TO LAUgH ABOUT

The copy shop boss was concerned that his employees weren’t giving him enough respect, so he tried an old fashioned method of persuasion: He brought in a sign that said “I’m the Boss” and taped it to his door. Aft er lunch, he noticed someone had taped another note under his. “Your wife called. She wants her sign back!”

ANOTHER NO BRAINERAn engineer, a salesman, and a physicist were standing around the university fl agpole when an English professor wandered by. “What are you doing?” he asked. “We need to know the height of the fl agpole,” said one, “and we’re discussing the formulas we might use to calculate it.” “Watch!” said the English professor. He pulled the pole from its fi tt ing, laid it on the grass, borrowed a tape measure and said, “Exactly 24 feet.” Then he replaced the pole and walked away. “English professor!” sneers the salesman, “We ask him for the height, and he gives us the length.”

CURSED FOR LIFEAn old man goes to the Wizard to ask him if he can remove a curse he has been living with for the last 50 years. The wizard says, “Maybe, but you will have to tell me the exact words that were used to put the course on you.” The old man says without hesitation, “I now pronounce you man and wife.”

HONEST BIDSelling at an auction was halted when the auctioneer announced, “Someone in the room has lost his wallet containing £2,000. He is off ering a reward of £500 for its immediate return.” Aft er a moment of silence, there was a call from the back of the room, “£550.00”

I NEED MORE RAMTwo elderly couples were enjoying friendly conversation when one of the men asked the other,” Fred, how was the memory clinic you went to last month?” “Outstanding,” Fred replied. “They taught us all the latest psychological techniques: visualisation, association, etc. It was great.” “That’s great! And what was the name of the clinic?” Fred went blank. He thought and thought, but couldn’t remember. Then a smile broke across his face and he asked, “What do you call that flower with the long stem and thorns?”

“You mean a rose?” “Yes, that’s it!” He turned to his wife,

“Rose, what was the name of that memory clinic?”

CLEVER KIDA young child walked up to her mother and stared at her hair. As mother scrubbed on the dishes, the girl cleared her throat and sweetly asked; “Why do you have some grey strands in your hair?”

The mother paused and looked at her daughter. “Every time you disobey, I get one strand of grey hair. If you want me to stay pretty, you better do what I ask you occasionally.”

The mother quickly returned to her task of washing dishes. The little girl stood there thinking. She cleared her throat again. “Mother?” She sweetly asked again.

“Yes?” Her Mother replied. “Why is Grandma’s hair all grey?”

HOW TO gET A NEW BIRD!Bob, a 70-year-old, extremely wealthy widower, shows up at the Country Club with a breathtakingly beautiful and very sexy 25-year-old blonde-haired woman who knocks everyones socks off with her youthful sex appeal and charm and who hangs over Bob’s arm and listens intently to his every word. His buddies at the club are all aghast. At the very first chance, they corner him and ask, ‘Bob, how’d you get the trophy girlfriend?’ Bob replies, ‘Girlfriend? She’s my wife!’ They are knocked over, but continue to ask. ‘So, how’d you persuade her to marry you?’ ‘I lied about my age’, Bob replies. ‘What, did you tell her you were only 50?’ Bob smiles and says, ‘No, I told her I was 90.’

CHOOSE yOUR OWN OBITThree buddies die in a car crash, and they find themselves at the pearly gates.

They are all asked, “When you are in your casket and friends and family are mourning you, what would you like to hear them say about you?

The first guy says, “I would like to hear them say that I was the greatest doctor of my time, and a great family man.”

The second guy says, “I would like to hear that I was a wonderful husband and school teacher who made a huge difference in our children of tomorrow.”

The last guy replies, “I would like to hear them say... LOOK!!!

HE’S MOVING!!!!!”

SPOTTED DOg IN CHECKA man went to visit a friend and was amazed to find him playing chess with his Dalmation dog. He watched the game in astonishment for a while. “I can hardly believe my eyes!” he exclaimed. “That’s the smartest dog I’ve ever seen.”

“Nah, he’s not so smart,” the friend replied. “I’ve beaten him three games out of five.”

ALWAyS WEAR CLEAN UNDERWEAR IN PUBLICESPECIALLy WHEN WORKINgUNDER yOUR VEHICLE.

From the Daily News comes this story of a Leicester couple who drove their car to ASDA, only to have their car break down in the car park.

The man told his wife to carry on with the shopping while he fixed the car.

The wife returned later to see a small group of people near the car.

On closer inspection, she saw a pair of hairy legs protruding from under the chassis.

Unfortunately, although the man was in shorts, his lack of underpants turned his private parts into glaringly public ones..

Unable to stand the embarrassment, she dutifully stepped forward, quickly put her hand UP his shorts, and tucked everything back into place.

On regaining her feet, she looked across the bonnet and found herself staring at her husband who was standing idly by watching.

The RAC mechanic, however, had to have three stitches in his forehead.

HOW TO LOOK BRIgHTWhile living in Manchester the weatherman said, expect 10 to 12 inches of snow tonight so park on the right side of the road so we can plough the left side. The salesman’s wife ran out and parked on the right side. The next week the forecast called for another 10 to 12 inches of snow, but this time he said park on the left side. So the salesman’s wife ran out and parked the car on the left side of the road. The following week 16 inches of snow actually fell, the lights went out and all power was lost. The salesman’s wife said, my goodness, now I don’t know where to park the car. “Why don’t you just leave it in the garage!” the clever salesman said.

IN THE SERVICEA man was being interviewed for a job. “Were you in the service?” ask the interviewer.

“Yes, I was a Marine,” responded the applicant.

“Did you see any active duty?”“I was in Vietnam for 2 years and I

have a partial disability.”“May I ask what happened?”“Well, I had a grenade go off between

my legs and I lost both testicles.”“You’re hired. You can start Monday

at 10 am.”“When does everyone else start? I

don’t want any preferential treatment because of my disability.”

“Everyone else starts at 7 am but I might as well be honest with you. Nothing gets done between 7 and 10. We just sit around scratching our balls trying to decide what to do first.”

THE yOUNg BUSINESSMAN

A young businessman had just started

his own firm. He rented a beautiful

office and had it furnished with

antiques. Sitting there, he saw a man

come into the outer office. Wishing to

appear the hot shot, the businessman

picked up the phone and started to

pretend he had a big deal working.

He threw huge figures around and

made giant commitments. Finally he

hung up and asked the visitor, “Can I

help you?”

The man said, “Yeah, I’ve come to

activate your phone lines.”

NEW SECRETARy

Two guys were discussing the new

secretary at their office. John to George:

“Man, I dated her last Tuesday and we

had wonderful sex. She’s a lot better in

bed than my wife!”

Two days later. George to John: “Well,

I dated her too and we had sex as well,

but I still think your wife is better in

bed!”

A STORy ABOUT EVERyBODy

This is a story about four people named

Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and

Nobody.

There was an important job to be

done and Everybody was asked to do it.

Everybody was sure Somebody would

do it. Anybody could have done it, but

Nobody did it.

Somebody got angry about that,

because it was Everybody’s job.

Everybody thought Anybody could do

it but Nobody realized that Everybody

wouldn’t do it.

It ended up that Everybody blamed

Somebody when Nobody did what

Anybody could have done.

Two strands of DNA… were walking down the street. One says to the other, “Do these genes make me look fat?
