Francisco “Frank” R. Esquivel, 59, was called into eternal rest at his home in Mammoth, Arizona on Tuesday, April 10, 2018. He was born in San Manuel, Arizona on Feb. 19, 1959 and grew up in Mammoth. He went to school and worked in the area most of his life. Frank was a loving father, tata, son, brother, uncle and friend. He was very friendly and easy going so he had many friends. He especially loved music and enjoyed watching his favorite artists live. He loved to

hang out and spend time with friends and family. Frank will be forever remembered by his daughter, Alicia and son in law Gelacio Zazueta; sons, Francisco Esquivel Jr. and Fabiyan Esquivel; his parents, Francisco M. and Velia Esquivel; brothers, William Esquivel and Angel (Betty) Esquivel; sister, Delores Esquivel; four grandchildren, Alexis, Freddie, Amar and Izayah; great=granddaughter, Amaya; and many nieces, nephews, friends and primos!

After her mother’s death, she became a resident of the Arizona Training Center in Randolph. There she was greatly loved and cared for by the loyal and faithful staff: Veronica Simms, Sabrina Hernandez, Laura Escarcega, Megan Thompson, Maira Martinez, Ashley Martinez, and Eloisa Thoreson. She is preceded in death by her parents, Camerino and Mercedes; nephews, Lawrence Lopez and Gary Kent Lopez; sister-in-law, Becky Jo Lopez; niece, Krista Lopez;

and great nephew, Mark Anthony Gomez. She is survived by brother and sister-in-law, Hector and Sandra; sister, Gerry; brother and sister-in-law, Camerino Jr, and Judith; and brother, Steve. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family. Services will be held on Saturday, May 5, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Superior, Arizona. The viewing will be at 8:30 a.m., the Holy Rosary at 9:30 a.m., Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery. A luncheon will be provided at St. Mary’s Center immediately following the interment.

Mr. Michael Napien-tek, District Music Director for the Ray

Unified School District, has the right idea. Start young. He has a beginner group, an intermediate group, and the high school band. At the annual concert a few weeks ago, the “start young” procedure was clearly evident. I have been to many school concerts over the years, and this was one of the best. It was best because the two younger bands show such promise. I expected bad notes, bad intonation, and question-able rhythms. Some of these things are to be expected. But my ears pricked up when I saw the groups paying attending to Mr. Napientek, following his cues, and forming a unified

whole. My ears also pricked up when the younger groups demon-strated the abilities to swell the music up and down, to play legato (smoothly) and staccato (short, crisp notes), and to keep time and make appropriate entrances. This tells me that the music program is in good hands, and that we have much to look forward to. This is a good band program founded on sustainable principles. Two weeks from now, on Thursday, May 17, Old Time Pizza is working with the school music program to raise money for band uniforms and instruments. The high school band will give a concert in the open area next to the pizza parlor, holding forth from 6 to

There is also a GoFundMe site to raise money for uniforms, and donations to the music program (tax deductible at that) may be made at the dis-trict office. Uniforms aren’t cheap. They are made of good materials to last many years, and they are also cut in such a way that re-peated alterations can be made

to extend their lifetime. I only hope that enough uniforms will be ordered, because I predict that pretty soon we will have a much bigger high school

CVIT-ASARCO Manufacturing- Welding Technology Internship Program located in Ray High School gets recognition and grant funding from Arizona Science Founda-tion supported by the JP Morgan Chase Foundation. On March 20, 2018, Arizona Science Foundation announced recipients of grant money up to $21,000.00 each. One of the four institutions recognized was Cobre Valley institute of Technology- CVIT JTED. Another three are Estrella Mountain Com-munity College (EMCC, Mesa Community College, Arizona Advanced Manufacturing Institute (AzAMI) and Yavapai College, (YC). Science Foundation Arizona (SFAz) is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization initiated in 2006 by Greater Phoenix Leadership, Southern Arizona Leadership Council and the Flagstaff Forty, in conjunction with the executive and legislative branches of state government. SFAz serves as a catalyst for high-wage, knowledge-based job creation and economic diversity through admin-

istration and strict oversight of research, development and education grants to public education and other non-profit research performing institutions. Internship program will fund up to 10 students. Each internship will last six weeks and interns will receive $2,000 stipend for participation. This program is in support of Ray High School Welding Program under leadership of Professor Colton. Mr. Sam Colton established his welding program in 2017-2018 school year. The program opened its doors to students from neigh-boring school in Hayden. Hayden High School students are being transported each day to participate in instruction and in SKILLS USA, student organization. The CVIT- ASARCO Manufacturing- Weld-ing Technology Internship Program helps to develop strong partnership with local industry and give the students opportunity for paid on the job training with option to apply for permanent position at ASARCO. In six weeks student will put the skills they learned in school to work. They will be

able to see mining operations comprehen-sively, including tours of all departments, Q&A sessions with department heads and General Manager. Students will spend time mastering welding skills and take in house welding test. The internship will be open to two students from CVIT- Gila Community College (GCC) program in Miami, AZ. Stu-dents from Globe, Miami, Superior and San Carlos participate in CVIT-GCC program. CVIT would like to thank Mike Kotraba- ASARCO General Manager- Ray Opera-tions, Kristen Benedict Central Arizona College- Department Chair CAC Advanced Technology Division, and Michael A. Pastor Workforce Training Director Gila Com-munity College and Roy Sandoval- Gila County Schools Superintendent for gener-ous letters of support. CVIT also would like to recognize Nicolas Montague- Chief Deputy of Gila County Superintendent for data support on a very short notice. Special recondition goes to Professor Sam Colton, welding teacher and CTE director in Ray High School for vision and drive to see this

project through. The program would not be possible without visionary leadership and devotion to students of two local Superin-tendents, who come together in education to provide better futures for children in Copper Corridor, Curt Cook- Superinten-dent of Ray Unified School District and Jeff Gregorich- Superintendent of Hayden- Winkelman School District. “I was born and raised in the Hayden com-munity,” said CVIT’s superintendent Pete Guzman. “It is a pleasure to see Hayden and Ray High Schools coming together and pooling resources. We all work hard to bring children of our rural communities the best opportunities for a great future. This internship will breach a gap between school and gainful employment. It will give our children something to look forward to in the summer after graduation and beyond. We are very excited about our new partner-ship with ASARCO and hoping we can work together on growing home town employees ready to start their careers in manufactur-ing/mining field.”

Ray senior softball player Janae Ruiz will continue her academic and athletic career at the next level after recently signing her Letter of Intent to MidAmerica Nazarene University, an NAIA liberal arts college located in Olathe, Kansas, and a member of the Heart of America Athletic Conference.Ruiz, a four-year varsity middle infielder for the Lady Cats, considered several offers before making her decision. “Having the ability to choose where I wanted to go to school, this choice was easy to make,” said Ruiz, who will study Business in pursuit of a Business Administration degree. “When I went for my visit I knew this was the place for me. I loved the campus, and Coach Wade made me feel at home.” The opportunity to compete at the next level is the culmination of hard work and determination for Ruiz, who started playing softball when she was 10 years old. Under the direction of a private hitting coach and her father, James, Ruiz learned to become an accomplished slapper – a left-handed hitter who runs toward a pitched ball with the goal of putting the ball in play to the left side of the infield, utilizing her speed to get on base and put pressure on the defense. “Janae moved to the left side to become a slapper when she was playing 12U,” James Ruiz told Copper Basin News. “I took her to a left handed hitting coach every other weekend for about a year. During this time, I was also working with her several times a week on her hitting as a slapper. “To this day I have continued to fine tune her slapping skills. There is a special reward coaching your kid and seeing their potential fully develop as they grow.” A member of back-to-back state championship teams in 2016 and 2017, Ruiz was a Division V All-Section V 2nd Team selection as a sophomore. She earned All-Conference First Team, All-Region First Team and Region Defensive Player of the Year as a junior. So far, in her final year, she’s been named All-Region First Team with All-Conference voting still ongoing. When she’s not competing for the Lady Cats, Ruiz plays club softball as a member of the Arizona Hotshots. “I am a strong believer that to be the best, you must play the best,” she said. “Being a Hotshot, I have been fortunate to play against some of the best teams at some of the best fields all over the country.” Ruiz is a career .593 hitter for the Lady Cats, including a .605 batting average this year. Other career stats include 191 hits, 182 runs, 87 RBI, 24 doubles, 14 triples, 6 homeruns, and a 1.483 OPS. Perhaps her greatest stat: 33 strikeouts in 399 high school career plate appearances. “Playing all these years has taught me that having a hard work ethic, dedication, perseverance, great coaches, and the support of my family, I can take my softball career to the next level,” she said. Ruiz credits her experience as a student-athlete at Ray for learning “maintain my GPA and the importance of education while being a student-athlete.” “Playing club ball year-round also taught me how to

balance my education, the sport and friends,” she added. What will Ruiz miss about Arizona, or Kearny specifically? “When I move I will miss my family and friends, they have been my support system through my journey,” she answered. “I will also miss Arizona sunsets with the mountains. Kansas is so flat, it makes me appreciate Arizona’s landscape.” James and Kristina Ruiz acknowledged their oldest daughter “has worked hard and sacrificed a lot of ‘normal’ high school events and things to make this chapter of her life happen.” “We are so proud of her and excited for her next step

on her softball journey,” James said. “She is so fortunate to be able to go play college ball while earning an undergraduate degree.” Janae’s parents are looking forward to making trips to Kansas to watch her play. She’s looking forward to a few things too. “I am looking forward to earning my degree while continuing to play the sport I love,” Janae said. “I am also looking forward to being in a new environment, meeting new people, and creating new memories.” Added James: “To say we are super proud parents is an understatement.” The Kearny community is “super proud” as well, for sure.

21 Eagle One Veteran Outreach to Visit

The Eagle One Veteran Outreach Center will be at the VFW in Superior on Thursday, June 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visit them online at hohp4heroes.org. Eagle One provides veterans a place to learn about and apply for all services available to them.

The Town of Kearny Public Works Department is placing stop signs at the intersection of Fairhaven Road and Victoria Circle and at the intersection of Hartford Road and Victoria Circle. These two intersections will now be four-way stops.

The Superior Justice Court will be closed and temporarily moved to Kearny while the Superior office is being remodeled. The Superior office will reopen later and become the hub office for the JP district.

Please be courteous to the people who like to walk and exercise around town by picking up the scooters and basketball hoops from the sidewalks. Also, please remember to take your garbage can off of the sidewalk. The Town has received several complaints from people who walk in the early morning or late evening and they are tripping over the scooters, basketball hoops and garbage cans. Town of Hayden ArizonaPublic Hearing Regarding Use of CDBG Funds

The Town/City/County is expected to receive approximately $417,333 in FY2018 federal CDBG funds from the Arizona Department of Housing Regional Account (RA). The Town may also apply for $300,000 in FY2018 CDBG funds from the State Special Projects (SSP) account. CDBG funds must be used to benefi t low-income persons and areas, alleviate slum and blight or address urgent need. Based on citizen input as well as local and state planning objectives several potential projects have been selected to be forwarded to the State of Arizona with a request for funding. A public hearing will be held at the regular Town Council meeting at 5:30 pm on May 21, 2018 at the Town of Hayden Council chambers to discuss the potential projects. It is expected that the Town Council will select the fi nal projects at this hearing and adopt applicable resolutions. The Town of Hayden has 662 residents with 57% reported as in low to moderate income households, 377 qualifi ed benefi ciaries. The potential CDBG projects are named and described as follows: 1. Replacement of water lines and fi re hydrants: $360,000 to replace units as prioritized

by the town including lateral lines, control valves, and related equipment providing the town’s potable water.

2. Upgrading the Wastewater Treatment Plant: Insuffi cient information to defi ne this project.

3. Repairing Streets, curbs and adding street lights: Insuffi cient information to defi ne this project.

4. Demolition of abandoned and burnt homes: $360,000 to Evaluate, abate, and remove residential structures. Would address approximately 36 buildings to remove hazards to the community.
