Burn ban was avoided thanks to June rain By ALBERT VILLEGAS [email protected] It looked like Wharton County had been headed to- wards a burn ban from dry conditions as the third week of June began. But, rains quick- ly put a stop to that. The Keetch-Byram Drought Index was 456 in WC on Sunday, June 21, accord- ing to the WC Office of Emer- gency Management (OEM). Once the KBDI level reaches 500, a burn ban is ordered by a county official like County Judge Phillip Spenrath or OEM Coordinator Andy Kirk- land because of extreme dry conditions. However, during a Wharton County Commissioners Court meeting on Monday, June 22, Spenrath read that the KBDI average was 469, acknowledg- ing that a burn ban was close to being declared. He had said that rain was forecast and that it could change the coun- ty’s circumstances. A few days later on Sunday, June 29, the KBDI average was 75 (33 the wettest and 219 the driest). It rained so much that a flash flood watch went into ef- fect on Wednesday, June 24. That same day, Kirkland released rain totals, per the Lower Colorado River Author- ity’s (LCRA) Hydromet. During a 24-hour period, Lane City received 3.49 inches of rain, followed by Wharton (2.18 inches), El Campo 2.03 inches), and Glen Flora (1.99 inches). The following day, June 25, WC received more precipita- tion from a cluster of storms that moved into southeast Texas from the northwest. According to the LCRA in a 24-hour period it rained 1.43 inches in East Bernard, the most of any WC city. Glen Flora received 0.57 inches, El Campo 0.17 inches, and Wharton 0.17 inches. In Colorado County, Garwood re- corded 5.32 inches and Eagle Lake 2.4 inches. Kirkland said some loca- tions that did face the po- tential for flooding included western Rosenberg, El Cam- po, Wharton, Sealy, East Ber- nard, Wallis, Simonton, San Felipe, Beasley, Kendleton, Orchard, Egypt, Hungerford and Louise. Kirkland reported on Mon- day, June 28 that it would be a hot and dry week ahead as residents celebrated Indepen- dence Day on Saturday, July 4. “We’re in Texas, it’s July,” he said. This week on Monday and Tuesday, winds in excess of state limits for outdoor burn- ing were forecast. Kirkland said tropical ac- tivity was affected by the Sa- haran dust last month and into July. “The tropics (were) quiet, partly due to the Saharan dust that (was) over the south- ern Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico (but) no com- plaints here,” said Kirkland, alluding to the dust particles that affect the warm waters from forming a tropical dis- turbance that can lead to a tropical storm and eventually a hurricane.
