Club members are required to bring an adult chaperone with them to all meetings. Registration form is included in this month’s newsletter. Holiday Bake Off Join us for the 1st Annual Meade County 4-H Holiday Bake-Off on December 12, 2016. Entries can be dropped off from 8:30 am - 10:30 am and the awards program will begin at 5:30 pm. Categories include: cakes, cupcakes, pies, candies, cookies, brownies/bar cookies, breads, gingerbread cookies, and specialty items (such as Gingerbread House) and are open to ages: Clover Buds (ages 5-8), Junior 4-H’er (ages 9-13), Senior 4-H’er (ages 14-18) The purpose of the Holiday Bake-Off is to encourage adults and youth to work

together on a project. This is not a traditional 4-H contest where a 4-H member must do all the work themselves. Mixes, pre-cooked, and non-cooked items may be used in the finished product. Work should be done by the youth with supervision, directions and help of an adult. Entries must have a festive holiday appearance. NO LIVE PLANT MATERIAL (SUCH AS HOLLY, POINSETTIA, BOXWOOD, ETC.) MAY BE USED!! PRODUCT WILL BE DISQUALIFIED. Completed entry form MUST accompany your entry item. The complete informational packet and entry form can be picked up at the Extension Office or downloaded from our website: https://meade.ca.uky.edu/files/2016_bake_off_reg_packet.pdf. One recipe for each entry must be submitted so that everyone may sample the product after the awards presentation.

4-H Poster Contest “WHAT DOES 4-H MEAN TO YOU?” This is the theme for this year’s District 5 4-H poster contest. Put on your thinking cap and get busy creating your poster! Here are the rules:

RULES: 1. Poster must have 4-H in the title and it should display what 4-H means to the 4-H’er or what 4-H provides for boys and girls.

2. Age categories are Grades 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9-12. 3. Copyrighted characters cannot be used such as Peanuts, Charlie Brown and Mickey Mouse.

Digitally designed art is accepted, but must be the 4-H’ers original work.

4. Posters must be designed on poster board 14”x22” (1/2 of a regular poster board). Posters may be produced by any medium such as water color, ink, crayon, pencil, paint, but cannot be three dimensional. NO GLITTER, or other art supplies that may fall off or stain other projects

5. All posters must have a completed title form. Affix the form on upper left hand corner on the

back of poster. Forms may be pick up at our office. 6. NO sharing posters. Posters are individual. 7. Deadline to turn in poster is March 17, 2017.

District 5 4-H Teen Council Attention High School 4-H Members … you are invited to attend the D5 4-H Teen Council meetings and events! Meetings are held at the Taylor County Extension office and meet every other month. Please contact Deana if you are interested in learning more about these teen meetings.

4-H Cooking School In November, Cooking School Club members practiced their measuring skills and learned to make a homemade hot cocoa recipe. Officer nominations were made and elections will be held at our December meeting. Take a look at the cocoa recipe below and make a jar full for your family and friends. Ingredients Order of Work 4 cups instant non-fat dry milk 1. Measure all ingredients carefully. 3/4 to 1 cup cocoa 2. Mix ingredients together in the food contaier or 3/4 to 1 cup granulated sugar bag. 3. Put the lid on the container. Store at room temperature. 4. To make cocoa from mix: Stir mix. Use 1/2 cup mix for each cup of water.

Rules and Information

* Junior Class – Open to any youth, age 9-13 (age as of 1/1/17) * Senior Class – Open to any youth, age 14-18 (age as of 1/1/17) * Each writing piece must be original. * Entries are due 4:00 pm on Friday, February 17, 2017. Entries may be scanned and emailed to

[email protected] or may mail (or drop off) a hard copy. * All entries are to be on 8 1/2” x 11” paper, with entrant’s class, name and county on cover page

and last name on every page. Please include scoring guide and entry form at the back of the piece.

* Entries are to be double-spaced, typed with size 12 font on white paper. Songs may be single spaced within verses, chorus and bridge and double spaced between each item.

* Winners will be invited to showcase at the Kentucky State Fair, date TBD. * Song writing, poetry, press release and public service announcement lessons can be found in

national 4-H curriculum, “Picking Up the Pieces” and “Putting It Together.” Monologue lesson can be found in national 4-H curriculum “Play the Role.”

Holiday Closing Dates The Meade County Extension Office will be closed for the holiday

4-H Volunteers NEEDED … Could it be YOU? Become a 4-H Volunteer today and help create life-changing experiences for youth in Meade County! We are currently seeking 4-H Volunteers to fill the following roles: Sewing Club leader(s), Needlework Club leader(s), Quilting Club leader(s), and Fine Arts Club leader(s). All volunteers must complete a volunteer application and successfully pass all background checks. Please contact the Extension Office to receive an application and to talk to Deana about volunteering.

4-H Council Did you know that as a 4-H parent you are welcome to attend the 4-H Council meetings? Well, you are and we welcome any new faces for the upcoming program year. The 4-H Council is made up of 4-H parents and volunteers who provide guidance and support for the overall Meade County 4-H Youth Development program. Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday, Janaury 23, 2017 at 6:00 pm at the Extension Office. Please JOIN US and become an active adult volunteer for the program!

Winter Weather Notice This fall has been an unusually warm; however, Mother Nature can be very tricky this time of year!! Please remember that if SCHOOL is CANCELLED due to bad weather conditions (FULL OR PARTIAL DAY), ALL 4-H CLUB MEETINGS, ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS ARE CANCELLED AS WELL. In the event that school is not closed but

threatening weather conditions exist, please contact the Extension Office, 270-422-4958 or check our Facebook page for cancellation announcements.

2017 National 4-H Beekeeping Essay Contest This year’s topic is “How can MP3 (Managed Pollinator Protection Plan) more effectively protect honey bees from pesticide exposure?” Those interested in taking part in this contest should submit a typed or computer generated, double spaced, 12 pt font, 750-1000 word essay. Essays are judged on scope of research, accuracy, creativity, conciseness, and logical topic development. Essays should be turned into the Extension Office by Wednesday, February 1, 2017, for judging and selection of county winner.
