March 10, 2016

Please enjoy this most recent edition of the PTO Newsletter. In it you will find important information about the 2016-2017 PTO Board Positions available, volunteer opportunities, Social and Raffle information, and so much more! Thank you for taking the time to read and staying connected with the PTO.

The PTO is still looking for individuals to step up and become

part of our 2016-2017 PTO Board!

We ask you to consider fulfilling one of the open positions so that we can

continue to provide the school, students, and staff with the many areas of

support from the PTO. You may already be familiar with some of the ways the

PTO supports our school, while others you may not know. The PTO is an integral

part of the school, and we hope to shed some light on all that the organization, and its

volunteers and supporters do to help the students, staff and community of Cooper

Mountain.

The PTO funds classroom field trips each year for students. This not only

covers the fees incurred at each location, but transportation as well.

The PTO provides teachers with funds for each student in their

classroom. This enables teachers some of the necessary classroom enhancements needed

for the school year.

The PTO provides funds for each child for classroom parties. Classroom

party coordinators are reimbursed $8.50 per child/per year for each class party.

The PTO raises funds through various events, such as the social and

raffle/auction to fund important improvements to the school. Past projects have

included updating the gym with fresh paint and murals, new playground equipment, as well

as upgraded technology and equipment.

The PTO organizes and facilitates Family Nights throughout the school

year. These have included Harvest Festival, Gingerbread Night, as well as Literacy Night.

The PTO provides a forum for parents to discuss issues impacting the

Cooper Mountain Elementary community. The PTO also provides various ways to

communicate necessary information to families. These include bi-weekly newsletters, e-

mail blasts, the PTO website, as well as Facebook updates.

The PTO facilitates and provides necessary funds towards enrichment

activities for your children. Examples include our wonderful Art Literacy program,

Science Fair, as well as the One Book/One School program.

Please read on to learn more about the open positions available for the

2016-2017 PTO Board and help us continue all of these areas of support!

2016-2017 PTO BOARD

Interested in helping out with Teacher and Staff

Appreciation week? Have any ideas on how we can show

our thanks and gratitude to the wonderful staff at

Cooper Mountain? Please e-mail Rebecca Stein at

[email protected] with any

thoughts/suggestions, or to volunteer to help.

The Production Team has lost a few volunteers and we are down to just two people now. Any help would be appreciated on Monday, Wednesday or Fridays. Volunteer 30 minutes, an hour or two, whatever you have available to help the teachers stay in their classrooms and out of the copy room.

At this point any help is welcome, and does not have to be a weekly commitment if that is too much. I will provide training on the machines if needed. Anyone interested in helping out can reach out to me at [email protected] or call me at 503-816-9000.

back and relax, all you need is a book.”

Hooray for Books and Hooray for You! Our Book Fair was a huge success thanks to the support of our wonderful Cooper Mountain community! We grossed $8,772 in sales! Hats off to all who stopped by to support reading and our school library! Mrs. Paul was extremely grateful for all those who purchased books for the library from her wish list, and all those who donated money! You are all shining STARS!! Look for many NEW books to appear soon on our library shelves! Of course, the Book Fair wouldn't have been a success without all of our dedicated volunteers. We would like to thank: Melissa Hallnor, Lauren Pearson, Sandy Raff, Holly Stanfill, Renae Nylander, Vicki Monthei, Cheryl Rowley, Lisa Boyle, Sudha Narayanan, Diya Khothule, Rebecca Stein, Rhonda Carnell, Maria Medley, Kelli Lisonbee and Kim Brandt. We couldn't have pulled this off without your help!! Thanks, Krissa Ferguson and Jennifer Hoffman

CHESS CLUB

Students from our Advanced group and a

few from the Intermediate group

competed in the K-5 Regional

Tournament at the end of February. The

team took fourth place overall and faced

very tough competition. Annika Patil

finished in the 3rd place among all 5th

graders with 3 wins and has qualified for

the state tournament in the individual

bracket. Evan O'Malley and Ryan Lu led

the team with 3.5 points (3 wins, 1 loss &

1 draw) and may still have an outside

chance of being invited. Daniel Zhang

showed an incredible act of

sportsmanship by offering a draw in a

winning game to an inconsolable

opponent. The director mentioned him

by name during the trophy presentation.

The Chess Club also finished its first Intra-

Club Tournament in February and will host a

second tournament in April. We're so proud of

all our players!

Congratulations to our trophy winners!

SCRIP BOX TOPS AND

LABELS FOR EDUCATION

Please keep collecting your Box Tops and Labels for Education. A few reminders: • We can't turn in expired Box Tops. When clipping Box Tops, please don't clip off the expiration date. If a mistake is made, you can always tape it back together. • Go online at www.boxtops4education.com/ to find out more ways to earn Box Tops credit for our school. It's worth checking out and it really adds up! • Although "Labels For Education" (Campbells Soup, Pepperidge Farm, etc.) is not the same program as "Box Tops For Education", we will be collecting those labels too. They MUST include the UPC code (barcode) to count.
