1 Read the text and underline all the words that begin with f.

You don’t have to be a professional paleontologist to collect fossils. Anybody can do it. All you need is some basic information, a good place, and a lot of patience. Just follow these suggestions:

Check what kind of rocks you need to fi nd. Most fossils hide in sedimentary rock. This forms when tiny bits of rocks and minerals join together over millions of years. Plants and animals between layers of sediment become fossils.

Look for fossils in places where wind and water erosion expose old rock.

Wrap your fossils in toilet paper. Then use plastic bags to protect them. A backpack is a good place to keep your fossils.

Use a pen to write notes about your adventures in a little notebook.

So you are ready to go fossil hunting. Make sure that you go to a placewhere it is OK to collect fossils. Check with an adult if you’re not sure. Remember: never go alone or into dangerous areas.

Aesop was a Greek storyteller. He lived around 2,500 years ago. Some say he was a slave.

His master liked his stories so much that he decidedto give Aesop his freedom. The Greeks were like that: they appreciated talent.

There are no records to prove that Aesop ever wrote anything down. Fortunately, many years after his death, people started to write down these fables to share them easily. The ancient Greeks were a very organized society. Everybody had specifi c tasks. Men spent a lot of time away from home. They were sailors, hunters, businessmen, government offi cials or farmers. For fun, the men enjoyed parties, wrestling,

The word tsunami comes from two Japanese

words: tsu, which means “harbor,” and nami, which means “wave.” A tsunami isa series of huge waves. It happens after there is movement of the earth under the sea—because of an earthquake, a volcanic eruption, or the impact of a large meteorite. It is similar to what happens when you throw a rock in the water: the waves travel in all directions. In a tsunami, the waves can travel as fast as 800 km/h. The big waves grow when they are closer to the beach. They can be as high as 30 m. They can destroy buildings and houses.

On September 29, 2009, an earthquake caused a tsunami on the islands of Samoa. Samoa is in the Pacifi c Ocean, between New Zealand and Hawaii.

The tsunami destroyed many villages and a lot of people died. Do you remember this or other tsunamis?

Do you know what a greenhouse is? It looks like a small glass house. Greenhouses are used

to grow plants, especially in the winter. The glass panels let in light but do not let heat escape. This keeps the plants warm enough to live in the winter.

On Earth, the gases in the atmosphere work

like a greenhouse. They collect solar energy and make the planet warm. Some rays escape and go back into space. Without the greenhouse gases, the Earth would be very cold. Greenhouse gases are good in small quantities. In large quantities, the Earth becomes too warm.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a greenhouse gas.

Humans create it when power plants, cars, trucks and airplanes burn fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas). More CO2 means that the atmosphere collects

Teenagers and sports are an incredibly healthy mix. Physical activity has amazing benefi ts for both mind and body. So why not get off that couch and onto the playing fi eld this summer?

Doing activities in groups is fun, and sports are no exception. Team sports help develop strength and coordination; they also build leadership and other social skills. In addition, team sports are a great way to learn to manage stress better. The most popular team sports for teenagers are football, volleyball, and basketball.

If you don’t like the idea of joining a team, there are other sports for individual participation. These sports are a good option if you prefer to progress at your own pace. Life sports give you the physical workout your body needs regularly. They include swimming, squash, gymnastics, karate, and skateboarding.

It doesn’t matter whether you choose a team sport or a life sport. The key is to fi nd a sport that interests you. It will help you stay active and fi t while you have fun.
