The Tennessee Opioid Crisis andStrategies for Non-Opioid PainManagementDavid A. Edwards, MD PhD and Stephanie G.Vanterpool, MD, MBA

BIO Dr. Edwards practices Pain Medicine atOne Hundred Oaks Interventional Pain Clinicand at Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center. Hetrained in Anesthesiology at the University ofFlorida and in Pain Medicine at MassachusettsGeneral Hospital, Harvard University. Hispractice specialties include the interventionaland medical treatment of pain, including cancerpain, palliative care, pediatric pain, andoperative pain. Dr. Edwards researches thepredictors of chronic pain, the use of opioidsand non-opioid pain medicines, and ways tohelp patients with chronic pain better toleratesurgery. He is the Clinical Chief of the ChronicPain Service at VUMC and leads innovativeefforts to establish Telemedicine consultations forpatients and practitioners around the state.

BIO Dr. Stephanie Vanterpool is the Director ofComprehensive Pain Services at the Universityof Tennessee Medical Center, Knoxville. Agraduate of Duke University School ofMedicine, she completed her Anesthesiologyresidency at UNC Chapel Hill and her painfellowship at Wake forest University, laterreturning to Duke to complete her MBA with acertificate in Health Sector Management. Herclinical and educational efforts focus onrestoring functional pain relief in her patientsthrough accurate diagnosis and targeted,comprehensive treatment of pain.

Supporting Families and Infantswith Neonatal AbstinenceSyndrome (NAS) in the NeonatalIntensive CareKara Boynewicz, PT and Raquel Keithley, PT

BIO Kara earned her Master’s & transitionalDPT in physical therapy degree from GovernorsState University. She was awarded her PCScertification in 2007 and re-certified in 2015.Kara is currently an Assistant Professor ofPhysical Therapy at East Tennessee StateUniversity (ETSU). For the last 14 years, Karahas worked in the NICU and DevelopmentalFollow-up Clinic where she has enjoyedsupporting the development of babies and theirfamilies. She has been trained in developmentalcare, assessment of the term and preterm infantand completed NNNS and TIMP training. Karais currently on the Neonatal AbstinenceSyndrome (NAS) research task-force at ETSU.

BIO Raquel Keithley received her PhysicalTherapy degree from St. Louis University andcompleted her Doctorate in Physical Therapy atthe University of Tennessee Chattanooga. Shealso completed the certificate in pediatricphysical therapy from Texas Women’s University.

She is a pediatric clinical specialist asrecognized by the American Board of PhysicalTherapy Specialties and is recognized by theNational Association of Neonatal Nurses,achieving the Developmental Care Specialist.She is a certified infant massage instructor andspecial needs child passenger safety technician.

Courses

Dr. Keithley is a pediatric physical therapist inthe NICU at The University of Illinois Hospital inChicago Illinois and Early Intervention providerthrough Pediatric Therapy Network. Prior torelocating to Chicago Illinois Dr. Keithley was aPediatric Physical Therapist at Niswonger Children’sHospital in Johnson City, TN. She specializes inproviding examination intervention and consultationin the NICU and the home setting.

Dr. Keithley has received the 5 Star Award andthe Servants Heart Award from Mountain StatesHealth Alliance and a Service Award fromETSU.

Dr. Keithley is a member of APTA, TPTA, IPTAand NANT.

TOPIC An in-depth review of NeonatalAbstinence Syndrome (NAS) and exploration ofresearch of abstinence tools and infantdevelopmental outcome measures to guide non-pharmological management of NAS andtreatment interventions, focusing onneurodevelopmental implications for infants,along with impact on families, health caresystems and communities.

Objectives1. Increase understanding of the scope of theproblem of drug dependent newborns,diagnosis criteria and implication for thehospital and TN community regarding NAS.

2. Increase the understanding of the neonataltherapist in examination of infant’s who aredrug exposed and their motor developmentwhile completing replacement therapy in theNICU

3. Analyze specific motor tests for infantdevelopment which may assist with classificationand treatment of infant with NAS

4. Apply strategies for treatment and whichallow successful implementation of clinicalobservations and scoring for infants with NAS

Intentional Touch: The importanceof Massage for infants withNeonatal Abstinence Syndrome(NAS)Emily Bunn, MOTR/L and Kalyani Garde OTR

BIO Emily Bunn is an occupational therapist inthe NICU at Regional One Health in Memphis,TN. She received her Masters of OccupationalTherapy degree in 2012 at University ofTenneessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) inMemphis. Emily has worked in the NICU atRegional One since she graduated, working herfirst year with the adult acute care populationand then transitioning to full time in the NICU.She also worked a year in early interventionservices. Emily daily sees infants ranging indiagnosis from prematurity to brachial plexusinjury to neonatal absitence syndrome NAS),and she is passionate about educating andempowering parents in the NICU because theyplay a vital role in their infant’s care. The qualityof developmental care in the NICU impactsneonates not only during their stay in thehospital but also for their quality of lives afterdischarge.

BIO Kalyani obtained her Masters inOccupational Therapy from Bombay Universitywith specialty in Pediatric Neurology. Herdissertation topic was “Role of Proximal Control

in gross and fine motor skills in children” .Kalyani has over 17 years of experience in avariety of settings including, acute care,outpatient, Nursing home, early interventionand pediatric private clinic setting. She hasworked with children of all ages most of hercareer however her heart lies with the babies. In the NICU over last year and a half Kalyaniadvocates family centered care with focus onKangaroo care via March of Dimes and infantmassage instruction. She continues to educateabout the role of OT in the NICU to incominginterns and Nursing with focus onNeurodevelopmental approach. She hasexperience taping and fabricating spints forinfants with any congenital anomalies.

Objectives1. Review recent research/literature involvingNeonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) andinfant massage and understand the need forongoing research

2. Describe infant’s sensory behavior withregards to experiencing NAS

3. Promote sensory modulation in preparationfor massage for infant’s with NAS

4. Recognize infant’s cues for initiatingtherapeutic infant massage

5. Identifying mediums and techniques utilizedin therapeutic infant massage

6. Understand the benefits of massage to boththe infant and the caregiver(s)
