Lead Safety for Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Initial Training (8 Hours)

The Environment Protection Agency’s 2008 regu-lation of lead-safe practices requires contrac-tors working in homes built before 1978 where children under six or pregnant women reside, to take the proper precautions to work lead-safe. These precautions include minimizing dust, con-taining the work area, and conducting a thor-ough clean up to reduce the potential exposure associated with disturbing lead-based paint.

The Federal Government banned lead-based paint for residential use in 1978 but many homes in the U.S. still contain it. Renovation activities that disturb lead-based paint can create lead hazards that have wide-ranging effects on health, from behavioral problems and learning disabilities, to seizures and even death. Those most at risk are children under six years old.

This 8 hour initial training is for contractors whose work on a pre-1978 structure disturbs more than six square feet of interior painted sur-face or 20 square feet of exterior surface. Pre-registration is required. Contact Vic McCormick at 209-2595 for more information.

All classes are held at the Cleveland Center

TEACHER ASSISTANT CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

Johnston Community College, in cooperation with the Johnston County Board of Education, offers a certificate program for those currently employed by JCS as a teacher assistant. Three plans are designed to qualify persons to receive this certificate.

Plan A consists of 198 contact hours in spe-cific, non-credit continuing education courses in the areas of reading/writing, technology or education and completion of the WorkKeys® assessments of Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics, and Writing.

Plan B consists of 18 semester credit hours completed in the Associate in Arts or Associate in Sciences programs.

Plan C consists of 13 semester credit hours completed in the Early Childhood Certificate program.

Upon completion of any of these options, it is the responsibility of the teacher assistant to notify the Continuing education Division at Johnston Community College to receive a certifi-cate verifying their completion. This certificate may then be taken to the Personnel Office at the Board of Education for the pay increment to be processed (Pay increases as the budget allows).
