The 2014/15 Continuing Education Program Guide contains program and certificate details to help get you on the path that’s right for you. Other resources available include:

Course Schedules contain specific course details including dates, times, fees, and delivery methods and are produced three times per year (fall, winter and spring). Choosefromclassroom,blendedandonlineformats. Courses are available in a variety of formats to suit your schedule, learning style and location. Course delivery options include:

• Classroom.Classes are held evenings and weekends during the day at the U of M’s Fort Garry and Bannatyne campuses as well as the U of M’s Massey Building (294 William Ave.) You can find course location information online at umanitoba.ca/extended/coned. Click on the Find Courses link for details.

• Online.Many courses are available online. After you register you will receive a password and ID to access your online course at umanitoba.ca/D2L

• Blended. A combination of in-class and online learning activities. Your instructor will provide you with a schedule for classroom and online participation.

*Please refer to course descriptions online to confirm individual delivery methods available.

Consideryourlearninghistoryandjobexperience. You may be closer to earning a certificate or a degree than you think.

• Recognitionofpriorlearning.If you can demonstrate that the prior learning you gained outside any of our programs is equivalent to the specific courses in a program we offer, you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning credit towards one of our certificates to a maximum of 50% of the total program hours.

• Transfercreditsandexemptions. You may be able to transfer up to 50% of completed post-secondary courses towards your certificate program.

• Plannowtogetadegreelater. You may be able to use credit from your certificate towards a future degree. Several U of M faculties as well as other universities grant degree credit for many of our certificate programs.

aPPlied counselling certificateThe ACC program offers you a hands-on supportive environment in which to develop and enhance your counselling knowledge and skills. Learn effective counselling strategies to help your clients and the skills required to apply them in the workplace.

Overview:

The Applied Counselling Program provides both theoretical and practical knowledge of the counselling process. Both professional and paraprofessional counsellors will benefit from the program because it focuses on the sequential development of practical counselling strategies.

PrOgram DescriPtiOn:

Students choose to specialize in one of two program streams:

• The General Stream consists of 210 hours of required courses and 100 hours of elective courses.

• The Addictions Specialization Stream consists of 210 hours of required courses in the Applied Counselling Certificate Program and 100 hours of Addictions Studies courses taken through the Addictions Foundations of Manitoba.

Take courses at your own pace, but all courses must be completed within five years from initial registration.

aDmissiOn requirements:

Submit a Self Declaration of an Adult Criminal Record form, a Self Declaration of a Child Abuse Registry form, along with the Program Application form (found at umanitoba.ca/faculties/coned/coned/forms/index.html) Eligibility does not necessarily mean that admission to the program will be granted.

AreA Book SectionCertifiCate Programs

Overview:

With the emphasis on lifelong learning in a global economy, there is a demand for adult educators and trainers who can facilitate the educational process and take a leadership role in the field of adult education.

The CACE program is for adult educators and trainers who help adults learn in the private or public sector, including those who:

• Instruct or train adults in classroom or other settings • Develop, facilitate or co-ordinate training or education

programs in business, industry, institutions or community organizations

• Provide support services to adult education • Design educational materials for adults

PrOgram DescriPtiOn:

This program will develop and enrich your knowledge and skills in the practice of adult education through:

• A comprehensive and practical foundation for excellence in adult education and training

• Interactive learning • Broad and varied perspectives on adult

education and training • Classmates with a diversity of experience • Knowledgeable and respected instructors who excite

your learning potential

The program consists of 150 hours of required courses and 100 hours of elective courses for a total of 250 hours.

Take courses at your own pace, but all courses must be completed within five years from initial registration.

aDmissiOn requirements:

We recommend that you have at least one year of experience as an instructor, facilitator, developer, program planner or administrator of adult and continuing education, whether in a paid or volunteer position. Applications to the program are accepted throughout the year.

The four core courses in the CACE program are cross-listed as undergraduate courses in the Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba:

• EDUA 1560 Adult Learning and Development• EDUA 1570 Foundations of Adult Education• EDUA 1580 Program Planning in Adult Education• EDUA 1590 Facilitating Adult Learning

These four courses may count as credit towards the complementary course requirements in the Bachelor of Education and Post Baccalaureate Diploma (PBDE) offered through the Faculty of Education.

If you have completed the four core courses as degree credit and subsequently apply to enter the Certificate in Adult and Continuing Education Program (CACE), please submit, with your application, the Certificate Course Credit Request Form (available online) to transfer the four courses into the certificate program.

The completed CACE Program may also be considered as 15 credit hours towards the fourth year requirement for admittance to a Master’s of Education degree program in the Faculty of Education for individuals who have a three-year undergraduate degree.

Upon enrollment in this program, you are eligible for student membership with Canadian Society of Training & Development (CSTD), and graduates are given a credit of one year towards the work experience requirement of the Certified Training and Development Professional (CTDP) designation.

canadian institute of management certificate Program in management and administrationThe CIM Program provides individuals in the public and private sectors with opportunities to develop their managerial knowledge and skills through a coordinated, intensive management development program.

Overview:

The CIM program is for supervisors, managers or other professionals that have experience in a management environment and are looking to receive a professional designation.

The program is offered in proud partnership with the Canadian Institute of Management. With over 700 members the CIM Winnipeg Branch is the largest in Canada.

Theprogramprovides:

• Development and enhancement of your leadership and communication skills

• An opportunity to demonstrate to employers that you have both the practical skills and the knowledge to contribute in the workplace

• Career excellence with transferable knowledge, skills and competencies

To be eligible for admission, you must have a minimum of two years of supervisory experience, four years of work experience or a combination of the two in a management environment. You will learn about various case management models, principles of social and physical rehabilitation and functional and psycho-social theories in rehabilitation.

This comprehensive program provides you with knowledge of client systems in the rehabilitation environment and the role of a rehabilitation team in achieving desired outcomes for the client and the client system.

You will learn competencies in communication and problem solving skills as part of a rehabilitation team, skills in marketing and negotiating rehabilitation plans for the client, the service system and service funders.

Overview:

The Certificate in General Case Management and Certificate in Rehabilitation Case Management programs provide training and preparation to work in rehabilitation programs such as medical, social and physical services, claims management and long-term care.

The programs are for individuals with experience in client services and are, or expect to be, working in a position that requires a comprehensive knowledge of case management concepts and skills.

In addition to completing the Program Application, you must submit a Letter of Intent that describes your reasons for seeking admission to either of the certificate programs. Please comment on how your personal goals and career objectives relate to the program. The letter of intent should be one page.

LetterofAppraisal

If you are applying as an individual, you require a letter of appraisal written by a current or former employer or volunteer work supervisor who is familiar with your experience and interest in client services.

Provide the person writing the letter with the description of the program. The letter should refer specifically to your work or volunteer experience. It should comment on your written and oral communication skills, planning and analytical skills, intellectual abilities and demonstrated interest in Case Management Education.

Letters of appraisal are also accepted for group applicants sponsored by a single employer.

certificate in manitoba municiPal administrationThe CMMA program will provide individuals with an essential body of knowledge required to assume administrative responsibilities within small to mid-sized municipalities.

Overview:

Individuals interested in entering this field or advancing their careers in municipal affairs, including administrators, elected officials and those interested in running for municipal office, will benefit from this program.

PrOgram DescriPtiOn:

The program consists of five required courses and one elective course.

Upon completion of this certificate, students achieving an overall grade point average of “3.8” or higher will be eligible to receive a certificate “with distinction”. In order to pass a course, you must score at least 50% on the final exam and achieve a minimum overall course grade of “C” (60%).

Take courses at your own pace, but all courses must be completed within five years from initial registration.

aDmissiOn requirements:

Those employed or wishing to be employed in the municipal field are invited to apply. There are no formal educational requirements for this program.

The FMA certificate program is for individuals who wish to enter the field of accounting, further their career, or work towards a professional designation.

PrOgram DescriPtiOn:

This certificate program provides you comprehensive coverage of financial and management accounting topics to an intermediate level and consists of nine required courses, offered in the evening on a part-time basis.

Take courses at your own pace, but all courses must be completed within eight years from initial registration.

aDmissiOn requirements:

To be eligible for admission, you should have a high school diploma, including 40-level mathematics. Consideration may be given on an individual basis to mature students who do not meet these minimum requirements.

Overview:

Human Resource Management requires leadership, teamwork, communication and strategic planning. Individuals will develop an understanding of the complete life cycle of an aerospace system—from initial identification of system requirements; to the design, manufacturing and marketing; to ongoing employment and maintenance.

PrOgram DescriPtiOn

This certificate program, consisting of 234 contact hours, is composed of six courses and one, three-day workshop and can be completed in as little as 10 months or up to a maximum of three years, depending on your needs. Courses are delivered in and around the Winnipeg airport in a dynamic classroom setting. Instructors use a variety of learning tools, including case studies, exercises, seminar discussions, lectures, guest speakers and company visits.
