TRU Regional Continuing Studies strives to offer top quality skill-based industry training and general interest courses to meet the needs of our communities. Regional offices include 100 Mile House, Ashcroft/Cache Creek, Barriere, Clearwater, Lillooet/Lytton and Williams Lake.

We recognize the importance of acquiring new skills and our courses are designed to offer individuals an excellent learning experience. Within each regional centre, areas of study may include, but are not limited to, arts and culture, computers, first aid, forestry, health and safety, home improvement, horticulture, professional development and trades and technology. Publicly offered courses can also be provided on a contract basis.

Health Care AssistantStudy in your own community to become a Health Care Assistant.

The TRU Health Care Assistant program is now being offered annually in the region. The HCA program will teach you the skills you need to work with children who are physically challenged, as well as older adults in residential care facilities, assisted living facilities and clients’ private homes. Students will learn to provide hands-on care to patients using a person-centered approach. Call or email to have your name placed on an interest list. Accuplacer Assessment testing required.

Meet our local coordinatorMargaret Hohner’s varied career started in Television Broadcasting which included producing educational television programming for the Knowledge Network (Open Learning) in the early 1980’s. Marg transitioned to the post-secondary education field in 1992, building on her strengths in communications, technology and administration. Marg’s career in post-secondary education has included 15 years as the Education Curriculum Resource Centre Coordinator at Okanagan University College. She has been with TRU for the past 14 years in various administrative capacities.

Marg loves living in a small town and is very involved with the community, volunteering for Rotary, Chamber of Commerce and as a Director for Community Futures Sun Country.

Ways to RegisterIn person or by telephone, email, or online at: tru.ca/regional

Cash, debit, cheque, money order, VISA, Mastercard or American Express accepted.

Registration is not complete, and you are not considered admitted, until all fees are paid.

Pre-registration is necessary at your local TRU office.

Our instructors do not handle registrations or fee payments. You must register with our office prior to the first class. This will be strictly adhered to.

Register EarlyRegistering early helps keep your course in the schedule. While every effort is made to deliver the programming as advertised, our courses do require a minimum enrolment to run. We highly recommend that you register early. Thompson Rivers University reserves the right to cancel any course with less than the minimum registrations.

Refund Policy for Continuing StudiesA full refund will be granted if you are registered in a course that is cancelled or if you cancel your registration one week (five business days) before the first class. Once classes have begun, a refund will be issued only for medical reasons. Refunds are processed through TRU in Kamloops and can take four to six weeks. You must provide a doctor’s note within two weeks of the course end date.

FeesAll fees must be paid in full before the course begins. A charge of $25 is levied for NSF cheques.

Continuing Studies Contract TrainingWe work with industry, businesses, community organizations and government agencies to offer contract training. Contract training is often more affordable, particularly if you have 8 to 12 people who need the same course. Some courses can be customized to meet your specific needs. WorkSafeBC Occupational First Aid Level 1 and Transportation Endorsement can be offered together on the days convenient to your company. In response to special requests we can provide:

• Flexible and cost-effective training• Training by knowledgeable and

experienced instructors• Training schedules to suit you and your

employees/clients

Applied Business TechnologyStart taking Applied Business Technology (ABT) courses today! Many ABT courses are now offered through the Lillooet Training and Education Centre. These courses are eligible for credits toward ABT certificate or diploma programs.

Your completion of ABT courses and programs prepares you to work in an office environment within a business, non-profit or government organization. You will develop strong communication, interpersonal and computing skills in small classes, and learn how to work effectively as part of a team.

Learning Choices

Choose between two ABT programs:• Business Fundamentals Certificate (on-campus

or online)• Administrative Assistant Certificate (on-campus)

Choose part or full-time study

Business Fundamentals Certificate (10 credits)The Business Fundamentals Certificate prepares you for some entry-level office administration positions. Further study is recommended for more advanced opportunities and career growth.

To graduate from this program and receive a transferable credit, you need a grade of C or better over all of the courses required for program completion. (See the vocational grading scale on the TRU website.)

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the Business Fundamentals Certificate program, you will be able to: 1. Transcribe data at a keyboarding speed of 50 net

words per minute (nwpm) or more.

2. Write and/or edit grammatical accurate, well-styledbusiness documents.

3. Prepare professional business documents, includingmemorandums, letters and reports.

4. Use spreadsheet software to organize, analyze andpresent operational data.

5. Use data base management software to organize,analyze and present operational data.

6. Use electronic mail and scheduling software toimplement effective time management strategies.

Introduction to Computers • YMCR 5030/ABTS 1200A solid understanding of a computer’s operating system is essential to using a microcomputer effectively. Students are introduced to operating systems at a fundamental level required for using an IBM or compatible microcomputer. Students learn the concepts of the DOS/WIndows operating system (OS) in preparation for further learning, and to manage a computer system.

Word Processing 1 • YMCR 5350/ABTS 1100Students are instructed in Microsoft Word for Windows. Students learn to create, edit and search documents, as well as use many additional extended features available in Word. Students should be prepared to devote additional non-class hours to exercises and project work.

Spreadsheets 1 • YMCR 5140/ABTS 1210Students create and format spreadsheets to analyze and share information and to make informed decisions. This course offers an introduction to basic spreadsheet concepts (basics, file management, ranges, sorting, columns and rows), using Excel. These concepts include Excel’s built-in functions (moving and copying data; formatting a worksheet; printing worksheets; functions and formulas (AutoSum, Inserting functions, Aver, Min and Max functions); referencing and absolutes (consolidating data with 3D references, now and today functions, absolute referencing); charts (creating a chart, selecting, moving, sizing and deleting chart items, preview and printing charts); and advanced built-in functions in Excel (financial function, using range names, split screens and freeze pane, working with clip art).

Prerequisites: YMCR 5030 or computer file-management knowledge

Databases • YMCR 5160/ABTS 1230 This course is designed for students wishing to gain a basic understanding of a relational database software program. Students learn the basic concepts of database structure and design by creating a working model. The course concentrates on the concepts of a database while using the Microsoft Access database for Windows. You should be prepared to devote additional hours of non-class time to exercises and project work.

Prerequisites: YMCR 5030 or computer file-management knowledge and basic bookkeeping skills

Accounting 1 • XBKP 0600/ABTS 1430Students are introduced to manual accounting, with an emphasis on fundamental accounting principles and their application in day-to-day business situations. This course is based on a service business organized as a sole proprietorship. Students practice basic bookkeeping and accounting skills including double-entry general journal entries, posting to the general ledger, preparing a trial balance, recording adjustments in a ten-column worksheet, producing period-end financial statements, closing the temporary accounts, maintaining petty cash and preparing bank reconciliations.

Business English • XWRK 0080/ABTS 1300 Students focus on the correct English usage in a business environment and are provided a comprehensive review of grammar, punctuation and style, as well as business spelling and vocabulary development. The course materials are presented in small, easily manageable learning segments.

Human Relations • XYMS 0400/ABTS 1500 Students concentrate on developing the personal and professional development skills required in today’s workplace. These skills include self-examination and assessment, development of effective communication skills, interpersonal skills, client relations, teamwork, problem solving and an understanding of business ethics.

Outlook • ABTS 1270 Students are introduced to Microsoft Outlook and receive hands-on training in the use of email for online communications, calendar for managing important dates and appointments and contacts for the creation and maintenance of an address database.

Administrative Assistant Certificate

Accounting 2 • XBKP 0610/ABTS 1440Students are exposed to common accounting systems including sales, purchases, federal and provincial taxes, merchandise inventory, payroll and annual reporting of remittances. They also introduced to subsidiary ledgers, specialized journals, combined journals, year-end procedures and worksheets. Financial statements are prepared in detail, including a classified balance sheet and an income statement for a merchandising business.

Prerequisites: ABTS 1430

Computerized Accounting • YMCR 5150/ABTS 1410This course is intended to teach the fundamental features and concepts of the Simply Accounting software program. Students are able to design, establish and manage an accounting system for a small business. This is a very intense, production-oriented course; students must be prepared to devote extra time outside the regularly scheduled lesson and laboratory work to get the most out of the course and to complete all course requirements to acceptable standards. This course is not intended to teach accounting principles.

Business Communications • XWRK 0922/ABTS 1310Students learn how to plan, organize, and correctly write effective reader-friendly business documents appropriate for use in today’s global business environment. Students write business letters, memos, reports and electronic messages.

Word Processing 2 • XYMC 0610/ABTS 1110 Students are provided additional instruction and practice with letter styles, tables, charts and reports. Advanced features of word processing software such as merge, macros, outlines, and graphics, and styles are also demonstrated and applied.

Spreadsheets 2 • XYMC 0600/ABTS 1220 Students acquire a higher-level of proficiency by using Microsoft Excel to create electronic spreadsheets for advanced applications in today’s workplace. Website Design and Maintenance • XPCS 0620/ABTS 1260Students acquire the skills needed to complete routine website maintenance and updates. Using a hands-on, practical approach, learners manipulate hypertext markup language (HTML), tags, tables, images, graphics, hyperlinks, special formatting and forms using text and web authoring programs.

Desktop Publishing • ABTS 1120 Students study desktop publishing functions, including the elements of page design and organizational tools, and the planning, drafting and production process. They learn to apply word processing and desktop publishing software, as well as integration elements, to produce publications such as letterheads, flyers, brochures, business forms and newsletters.

Keyboarding 2 • ABTS 1140 Students further develop their keyboarding skills to reach a minimum speed of 50 net words per minute (nwpm).

Presentation Software • ABTS 1240 Students apply appropriate design concepts to present data and information in a colourful and well-organized format, using PowerPoint presentation software. They are instructed in using design templates, applying various attributes and including a variety of objects to create, modify, save and deliver presentations.

Integrated Project • ABTS 1250 Students extend their word processing, spreadsheet, database, desktop publishing and presentation software knowledge in this capstone course by completing a variety of practical, integrated projects. Decision-making, prioritizing and other administrative skills are also developed.

Job Search • ABTS 1510 Students are provided with techniques to develop successful job search strategies for today’s competitive and changing job market. Topics include self-assessment, employability skill testing, job search strategies and research, using the Internet for job search and career planning, networking, resumés, employment-related communications, application forms, portfolios and interviews.

Practicum • ABTS 1520 Students are provided with the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills to meet the expectations of an employer in a real-work situation during a two-week practicum. They observe and learn daily office routines and assist the host employer by performing tasks as required.

Administrative Procedures • ABTS 1530 Students master essential organizational skills and develop efficient office practices in preparation for entry into the contemporary office. They acquire the ability to communicate effectively, think critically, apply problem-solving skills, and work effectively with other members of the office team. The rapid pace of change demands that office workers have the ability to develop new skills and understand new processes as jobs evolve.

WorkSafe BC Occupational First Aid Level 3 • XOCH 0820 OFA Level 3 courses qualify candidates for certification by WorkSafeBC as first aid attendants in industry. This course has achieved recognition in every province across Canada. This is a significant approval, specifically toward those employees of the oil and gas industry, logging, mining and other similar endeavors in the north. This program enables those employees to secure a first aid certificate recognized in Canada from coast to coast.

Requirements: picture ID. Acceptable photo identification includes driver’s license, student card, recreation centre pass, BCID or passport.

Enform Level 1 Chainsaw Safety • XFOR 0880This three-day Enform certified course is Level 1–Chainsaw/Powersaw Basics. This operational course covers: requirements and conditions for permitted entry; hazard recognition; use of personal protective equipment; entry procedures and precautions and much more. Confined Space & Rescue • XWRK 0880Personnel who enter confined spaces using the permit entry procedure must receive training. This 2-day operational course covers: requirements and conditions for permitted entry; hazard recognition; use of personal protective equipment; entry procedures and precautions and much more. Day 1: Level One is purely classroomDay 2: Level Two/Advanced will require students to wear on their backs a SCBA (and a harness) and to enter and remain (for a minimum of five minutes) and at times crawl on their hands and knees into a Confined Space simulator. When involved with rescue scenario (minimum of 2) they may be required to exert physical strength to pull, slide and or lift a casualty ‘victim’ or dummy in a rescue scenario. The level of light may be altered and smoke added (via a smoke machine) for added effect to the simulation.

If a student does not knowingly possess any medical condition which they believe may be worsened or aggravated by these activities then they are to sign a medical declaration. If they do have a condition such as asthma or a bad back they need to discuss this in private with the instructor before signing the waiver. The instructor has the discretion to allow or to turn away anyone with a medical condition.

2. PPE: Long-sleeve shirts and pants; coveralls preferredAppropriate foot wear; work boots recommended to simulate work requirements (no sandals or open toed),gloves, hard hats.

**We will provide: Confined Space simulator, flash lights, coveralls for use for anyone who doesn’t have them; two-radio communication system; four-point harnesses, SCBA’s and face masks; stretcher, advanced first aid kit.

Ground Disturbance–Level 2 • XWRK 0592Level I is for anyone in construction, mining, petroleum and other industries performing excavation in a non-supervisory role. Students will learn about a code of practice, recognition of hazards, underground structures and emergency procedures. Students must have a solid language competency to cover the extensive material about regulations, variances and emergency response plans for ground disturbance.Valid across Canada for three years.Fee: $150

Fall Restraint/Fall Protection • (OSSA) XOCH 0520The essential elements of this industrial safety program include identifying the location’s fall hazards posed by falling objects, establishing the methods through which the hazards will be controlled, developing a rescue procedure, training you to use the fall protection equipment and comply with the location’s work policies and rescue procedures, and equipment maintenance.

WHMIS • XOCH 0860 Changes to WHMIS

In 2015, WHMIS was updated to align Canada’s system with the US and other major trading partners. WHMIS 1988 is being phased out and by Dec. 1, 2018, only the new WHMIS 2015 will be used.

Transportation of Dangerous Goods • XDRV 0620The Transportation of Dangerous Goods course was developed to protect the public from the dangers of transportation accidents involving dangerous goods. The instructor guides you through the proper procedure for identification, inspection and transportation of these dangerous substances. A must for shippers, receivers, warehouse personnel and especially those who transport dangerous goods.

Traffic Control Certification • XFLG 0610The BCCSA is the WorkSafeBC approved certifier of all high-risk traffic control persons in BC. This two-day standardized course for Traffic Control Persons (TCPs) consists of classroom and practical training. Upon successful completion a three-year record of completion will be issued.

Requirements: CSA safety-toed boots

Fee: $350

NEW! Traffic Control Re-qualificationTCPs whose three year record of completion is about to expire must successfully complete the re-qualification process. The new Traffic Management Manual takes effect December 1, 2019 and the BCCSA needs to educate TCPs who are re-qualifying on the new standards. The 1-day re-qualification course will emphasize safe work practices and further safety in the (high hazard) traffic control industry.

The new 1-day re-qualification course will be mandatory starting on January 1st, 2019. All TCPs in the province of BC will be required to take the 1 day re-qualification course in order to renew their TCP certificate. The option to take the 2 day training course instead of the 1 day refresher will also be available.

Air Brake Certification • XDRV 0610The Air Brake Certification course prepares you for examination by the Insurance Corporation of BC (ICBC) for air endorsement to operate air brake-equipped vehicles on highways and industrial roads. There are 16 hours of classroom (theory) and four hours of practical instruction.

Fee: $325

Forklift Operator Training • XDRV 0500This training program in safety and operations of lift trucks and forklifts includes operations, safety and a driver’s test combined into a 10-hour session. Students are provided with academic training and driving skills to the CSA Standard B335-94 Industrial Lift Truck Operator Training.

Students must bring picture ID to class, as well as steel-toed boots. If a student does not have steel-toed boots, he/she should wear good sturdy footwear.

Small Engine Repair • XMEC 0600Do you have to pull the starter cord on your weed-eater or chainsaw until your arm is rubber? Do you need to remove the air filter on your lawnmower before it will start? Does your fishing boat motor sputter and die the

first time on the water? Do you know what the repair people are talking about when they do a tune-up on your tiller in the spring?

Requirements: bring a small engine (lawn mower, chainsaw, etc.) item to class.

Fee: $250 (plus supplies)

FREE! Community Futures - Business Plan Workshops • XWRK 0960Workshops will provide participants an overview of how and why a business plan needs to be completed. This is for someone who is starting a business or already operating a business. You will be given the tools on how to research and compile a business plan and cash flow. Mentorship will be provided to those who attend.

There is no way to overemphasize the importance of learning even the bare minimum before you travel to a foreign country— a country where you cannot rely on your own language. If you are an independent traveller (especially of the budget variety) or if you just want to mix with the locals as much as possible, you should definitely try to learn the basics before you go.

Conversational Spanish Level 2 • XSPN 0400 Did you enjoy Conversational Spanish Beginner Level 1? This course will take you to the next level. By learning more advanced structures and vocabulary, you will be able to function and make conversation with the locals in Spain and Latin American countries.
