Dear Fellow Academicians,

I take this opportunity to sincerely thank all of you, for giving

me an opportunity to serve the Academy in the capacity of

the President IAP 2010. I am aware that each New Year

brings fresh expectations and I am confident that we would

be able to meet them working together.

The year began with a very successful "PEDICON 2010"

at Hyderabad. The state of art venue equipped with latest

technology was an asset to a very well crafted scientific

program. It was only possible because of meticulous

planning, and hard work put in by organizing team. I

congratulate the Organizing Team of Pedicon 2010 and

the Central IAP Office team for excellent coordination to

make this mega event a grand success. It was for the first

time that two International CMEs viz. IAP - RCPCH (Royal

College of Pediatrics and Child Health) and IAP - AAP

(American Academy of Pediatrics) were held pre-

conference. Delegates had the opportunity to interact with

about 25 International speakers and large number of

eminent National speakers. Participation of National and

International Agencies, the American Academy of

Pediatrics (AAP), the Royal College of Pediatrician and

Child Health (RCPCH) and Latter Day Saint Charity(LDSC),

enriched the Conference significantly. Another feature of

Pedicon 2010 was sessions held for Parent Education

simultaneously on all three days. They were very well

appreciated by all those who attended.

IAP has extended its collaboration with other organizations

across the world. Immediate outcome of this is MRCPCH

Examinations (Part I, Part II and Clinical) to be held in India

at five cities viz. Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata and

Mumbai. Now our young students and pediatricians do not

need to travel to UK or any other country to appear in

MRCPCH examinations.

IAP has started the year very well with another program,

the 'Newborn Resuscitation Program' which IAP has

launched as the First Golden Minute this year in partnership

wit AAP and LDSC in 2009, and have taken it to a new level.

We wish to involve all our branches and members in this

program. It is heartening to see that IAP is going very strong

with Ministry of Health, Government of India in conducting

NSSK (Navjat Shishu Suraksha Karyakram). IAP believes

that the program will make a significant impact in reducing

U5 mortality rates and help in achieving the millennium

development goal.

One of my dreams is to take IAP to a global level, both

nationally amongst lay people and internationally amongst

other pediatric societies across the world. IAP has planned

parent education through all means of media. The module

on "Parenting Skills" is almost ready and will be launched

soon. IAP plans to come out with Parent Education sessions

on electronic media and articles on child health issues in

prominent news papers. I foresee that the presence of IAP

will be felt amongst lay people of our country. IAP plans to

share some of its unique activities like IAP Drug Formulary

and IAP Pediatric Software with other pediatric societies in

the world. IAP has decided to take some important issues

with the Government of India on behalf of the children of

our country. Some of these documents are already prepared

and sent to concerned authorities.

IAP has a wide network of over 300 state, district and city

branches. It is through active involvement of these branches

that IAP achieves its objectives. I request you to have

maximum involvement in generating community awareness

and par ticipate in health programs especially parent

education. IAP plans to revive some of the popular programs

like Respiratory Tract Infection - Group Education Module,

Asthma Training Module, Ask IAP very soon. Presently we

are in the process of revising these popular programs. IAP

has decided to start registries in some important illnesses

viz. Kawasaki Disease, Juvenile Diabetes, Obesity,

Hypertension and Cystic Fibrosis. I request members to

contribute to these registries.

Subspecialty chapters have done a commendable job in

helping designing scientific program of Pedicon 2010. I

request all chapters to help in IAP Pediatric Satellite CMEs.

The format for the year is changed and it is no longer a

subspecialty CME, but, a combination of two or three

subspecialties in every CME. Introduction of fellowship

training programs in some of the pediatric subspecialties is

a good step. I request others to follow this to enhance the

pool of trained people in various fields in our country.

IAP has already launched Basic Life Support course for

lay people and para-medicals. IAP plans publications in

the form of books on Clinical Pediatrics, PICU Protocols,

NICU Protocols, Respiratory Medicine, Neonatology,

Nephrology and Endocrinology. The work on all these

books is already started and hopefully will be completed

in the current year only. IAP plans to work on

Universalization of PG Teaching. IAP HOD cell can play a

very vital role in this project.

IAP needs to devote efforts on research to upgrade its

academic base as visualized by my predecessors. IAP has

planned few research activities and I request members to

contribute to this. Presently research in IAP is individual

oriented and mostly comes from large institutions. Members

who are in private practice can contribute in a big way.

IAP has taken one more step this year and that is the

decentralization of some of its prominent activities. In this

direction, the IAP Drug Formulary is shifted to IAP Kochi

Branch; a publication house is started at IAP Gwalior Branch.

IAP plans to involve its state branches directly with UNICEF

state offices in carrying out activities related to Under 5

child mortality.

Communication is the back bone of any organization. We

need to communicate with each other more often. IAP plans

to improve its communication by installing mass sms soon.

I strongly feel that in today's era of electronic communication,

we need to improve our database of contact details. I request

all members to inform their current active email ID to IAP

Secretariat at [email protected].

I find myself fortunate to be surrounded by an efficient group

of 50 executive board members and office bearers. Please

feel free to send your inputs and suggestions to improve

functioning at various levels. Your feedback is very important

for me to understand how we are moving to achieve our

mission: "Commitment for improvement of the health and

well being of children".

Dear Fellow Academicians,

I am overwhelmed by the support given to me by all of you

in the year 2009. Every member whether in metros or in

remote areas takes pride of being an IAPian and put their

best efforts to serve IAP making many personal sacrifices.

IAPs high reputation both Nationally and Internationally is

just because all of us are working hand in hand and moving

forward together.

Highlight of the year 2009 has been MoU between IAP and

Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India for the

Navjaat Shishu Suraksha Karyakram(NSSK) in Public sector

practically in all the States. It is the tremendous efforts of

Dr. Naveen Thacker, National CoOrdinator, Dr. Vineet Saxena,

Dr. Vikas Goyal and many dedicated senior and young

faculty, that IAP would be able to complete all the State

level training courses on NSSK by March 2010. Now, on

the able and dynamic hands of Dr. Deepak Ugra, Dr. Tanmay

and Dr. Sailesh the program in the private sector will go on

full steam. An unprecedented mega support of Ms. Johnson

and Johnson for this program is highly commendable.

IAPians are joining from all corners in this movement of

‘saving the newborns’ and I have no hesitation to say that it

would be akin to ‘Dandi’ march in our quest of facilitating

newborns right to live. IAP is continuing with many other

child survival programs to help achieve MDG4 goals with

the help of district branches to reach the unreached.

All other specialist field of pediatrics is also receiving due

attention through many centrally supported program and

our highly active subspecialty chapters and branches. New

directions in IAP have been to go beyond pediatricians and

collaborate with specialists from other fields like

Obstetricians and also Nursing profession for betterment of

children and adolescent health. Reaching the community

through media exposure is a bold step which current

leadership is working on.

Country is working overtime to make Commonwealth Games

a success; so also IAP to make every child a happy child.

Fellow Academicians,

Very warm greetings from kottayam, the land of letters, lakes

and latex. Let me at the outset Thank all of you for electing

me as the president elect of IAP 2010 and I assure you that,

I shall try my level best to uphold the prestige of this

prestigious organization by all means and I request your

whole hearted support and guidance for all my action plans

for 2011 to make IAP year 2011 a memorable one.

Regarding my little dreams for the next year - I will be mainly

focusing on improving pediatric education in the country.

With this in mind we will be conducting workshops on

“teaching skills” especially for the middle cadre teachers.

There is a lack of research in medical profession – both in

medical colleges and office practices and we will be

conducting research methodology workshops throughout

the country. Another area of interest is making uniformity in

PG and UG teaching. “Enable the disabled” is another theme

in my action plan, to identify the disabilities like deafness

and learning disabilities.

The strength of any association depends on its membership.

Even though our membership strength is more than 17000,

more than the same number of pediatricians are

nonmembers. So let us have a membership drive.

This year under the able guidance of Dr. Deepak Ugra and

Dr. Tanmay Amladi lot of IAP activities are coming up and I

wish them all the best. “WORKING TOGETHER WORKS”.

Now let us keep our hand together, work together, to make

this IAP year epoch making one.

Dear Colleagues,

It is my great privilege that I have been given the opportunity

of serving IAP as its vice-president. I heartily accept my

responsibilities and convey my thanks to you all for choosing

me for the post and wish you all a happy, joyful and

prosperous new year 2010.

With the formation of the new executive body, I feel IAP is

all set ready to reach new heights under the dynamic

leadership of our president Dr Deepak Ugra who has come

out with several innovative initiatives. All of us should join

hands and work with full team spirit to strengthen IAP and

give new dimensions to pediatrics in the country.

Today, it is a matter of pride for all of us that we are the

second largest pediatrics body in the world with the strength

almost reaching 20,000 members. At the same time it is

the unfortunate that IAP has not yet been able to bring all

the pediatricians under its orbit. Hence, I feel the greatest

challenge before us is to enroll all the pediatricians as the

members of IAP through a vigourous membership campaign

and see that the IAP chapters are opened in all the districts

of the country.

As all of you know, IAP has come out with many initiatives

to cater the needs of the growing profession of pediatrics.

One such initiative is conducting MRCPCH in association

of the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health, UK.

Passing this examination will earn the candidates a British

degree, without having to travel all the way to England.

Though the medical education has reached new vistas in

India, this qualification is still a prestigious plus point for

any pediatrician. Hence, all postgraduates are well

advised to make use of this opportunity to earn a MRCPCH

degree.

In addition to the latest developments in the field of pediatrics,

more and more number of sub-specialties are coming up.

This shows that the pediatric profession is maturing day by

day. I strongly feel that we should support development of

new sub-specialities so that pediatrics can develop into a

comprehensive health care system.

This is very important if we have to keep pace with the

rapid advances taking place all over the world. It’s time we

Indians went global in terms of knowledge, skills and

professional standards. IAP has this vision in mind and we

should all work in tandem to make it a reality.

I once again thank you for electing me and express my best

Greetings from Central IAP!

It is an honour and a privilage for me to take up the post of

Honorary Secretary General of IAP in the year 2010. It isalso a pleasure and a matter of pride to present to you the

report of IAP's activities in 2009.

As you might be aware, the Indian Academy of Pediatrics is

today internationally recognized as the key stakeholder forchild health issues in this great subcontinent, and is the

2nd largest professional body of Paediatricians in the worldnext only to AAP.

IAP's mission is child health - not just about being free of

disease, but rather about being holistically healthy - physical,mental and social health. Our organization's daunting

network of 18,000 members, 26 state branches, 284 localbranches and 28 subspecialty chapters and groups provides

the right foundation for promulgating this, through scientificupdation of its members via scientific meetings, publications,

websites and through media like local and national tabloids,TV channels and also through collaboration with other major

stakeholders of child health like UNICEF, WHO, GOI andNGO's.

The year 2009 saw the IAP focus on the following activities:

1. The First Golden Minute, Neonatal Resuscitation Programin collaboration with LDSC - Latter Day Saints' Charities,

and the AAP - American Academy of Pediatrics - twoToT's have been held in Bangalore in 2009 and now in

Hyderabad with faculty members from IAP, LDSC andAAP; meanwhile, 9 district instructor courses, 12

advanced provider courses and 16 basic providercourses were completed successfully all over India in

2009, and totally about 1400 pediatricians as well asanesthesiologists, gynecologists and nurses have been

trained in 2009.

2. The ASOV program was successfully conducted with

M/s Sanofi Pasteur as the sponsor and 1 Nat'lConsultative Meeting, 4 regional ToT's and 16 city level

workshops

3. The IAP Diarrhea & Zn Workshops were conducted

successfully with UNICEF as sponsor, with 1 Nat'lConsultative Meeting, 3 zonal ToT's and 2 state level

workshops; 2 more zonal ToT's and 6 more state levelworkshops will completed before March 2010.

4. The IAP Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) coursesactivity was also in full swing in 2009 with 46 PALS

courses for pediatricians, 6 for nurses and 3 BLS coursesfor school students / UG's being completed last year.

5. The 22nd IAP Quiz for Undergraduates and 3rd IAP Quiz

for Postgraduates - local, divisional and zonal roundswere successfully completed all through last year all over

India and the final rounds will be held during thisconference

6. The IAP has three official publications - The IAP website,the Indian Pediatrics journal and the Indian Journal of

Practical Pediatrics; Indian Pediatrics is the official peerreviewed and indexed journal of the Academy and

occupies the number 1 position among specialtyjournals in India and S Asia. Foreign submissions saw

a ise to almost 50% in 2009 and now the journalincludes overseas reviewers as well. The journal has

under took other projects like Emergencies in Children3rd Ed, Art & Science of Writing a Paper workshop

and a publicaton of a special issue on Immunizationsupported by UNICEF.

7. The Satellite CMEs conducted from Hassan, Karnataka,with help of the ISRO through EduSat, an Indian Satellite

devoted to education, were held with the participationof IAP Sub-specialty Chapters on Neonatology,

Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Adolescent Pediatrics,

Respiratory, and Infectious Diseases, were held with an

overwhelming response.

8. The most important event of IAP - PEDICON - was

conducted successfully at Bangalore on the PalaceGrounds between 22nd to 25th January 2009. The theme

was "Redefining Child Care". It was attended by morethan 6000 delegates from India as well as other countries

with International and distinguished national faculty.

9. Meanwhile all the various branches and subspecialty

chapters and groups organized a awesome number ofCME's, regional and National Subspecialty conferences

in 2009 on various child health issues like Nephrology,Neonatology, Hematology Oncology, Infectious Diseases,

Child Rights Protection, Childhood Disabilities, etc.

10.The Central IAP released the 4th Edition of IAP Textbookof Pediatrics in two volumes, under the dynamic chief

editorship of our senior past President, Dr. A.Parthasarathy. This edition has an illustrious team of

Editors and 230 authors with 55 new chapters included.The IAP Text Book has been acclaimed by the American

Academy of Pediatrics as the 'Best Text Book' publishedby the Pediatric Society of a developing country'. The

Library of American Academy Of Pediatrics at Elk Grovevillage permanently stocks a copy of the book. The

success of IAP TBP have prompted AAP to publish anAtlas titled 'Color Atlas of Tropical Peditrics' in 2009 with

the Editor-in- Chief of IAP TBP as one of the Contributory

editors for the new book by the American Academy of

Pediatrics.

IAP also conducted its administrative activities successfully

as follows:

• Three Executive Board Meetings were held in the year at

Bangalore, Bareilly and Mumbai in January, April-Mayand September respectively.

• The General Body Meeting was held on 23rd January

2009

• The Special General Body meetings were held on 23rd

January 2009 and on 23rd February 2009

• The IAP election was held for this year in 2009 and

Dr T U Sukumaran was elected as President elect 2010;Dr Santosh Soans was elected as Vice President in the

Executive Board Meeting today

• The National Consultative Meeting on Diarrhea and Znand on Art & Science of Vaccination were held in 2009.

So, the year 2009 saw IAP at its helm of activities and willcontinue to carry on the good activities and endeavor to

take further giant strides in the year 2010.

Report of PEDICON'201047th National Conference of Indian Academy of Pediatrics

The 47th National Conference of Indian Academy of

Pediatrics “PEDICON 2010” was recently held at Hyderabad.

The conference was held from January 7th to January 10th,

2010. The organizing committee sincerely thanks the Central

IAP for giving it an opportunity to host the conference. The

Conference was hosted by the A.P.State Chapter of IAP and

the Twin Cities IAP. The venue of the conference was the

prestigious Hyderabad International Convention Centre and

the Hitex Trade and Exhibition Centre, Madhapur, Hyderabad.

The Mission Statement of the conference was Scientific

Temperament. The theme of PEDICON 2010 was “From

care to ————Advocacy”. The core idea of the theme

was to reemphasize to the delegates their role as advocates

in child health. The Conference was organized with a view

to showcase the academic strength of Pediatricians from

Andhra Pradesh and to bring A.P in the academic roadmap

of Academy. The following were the highlights of the

conference.

1. More than 5000 delegates attended the conference. This

was one of the highest attendances of the National

conference held in the recent years. This was also

despite the unstable political climate prevailing in Andhra

Pradesh. Delegates from different parts of the country,

SAARC countries and also from U.S.A, Great Britain,

Canada, and New Zealand par ticipated in the

conference. Representatives of Government of India,

Government of Andhra Pradesh, UNICEF, WHO,

American Academy Of Pediatrics and the Royal College

of Pediatricians and Child Health (RCPCH) participated

in the deliberations.

2. For the first time in the history of Indian Academy of

Pediatrics the conference CME’s were held in

collaboration with the AAP and the RCPCH.

3. The IAP-RCPCH CME was held on 6th January 2010.

The venue was the auditorium of Gandhi Medical

College, Secunderabad. The highlight of this

collaboration was the fruitful interaction of the members

from both these bodies on important issues in child

health. It was also resolved the IAP will collaborate with

RCPCH for the conduct of RCPCH Examinations in India

for the benefit of Medical Students from India.

4. The IAP-AAP CME was held on the 7th January, 2010.

The Venue for the CME was HICC. The highlight of the

CME was that it was an accredited CME of the AAP and

was also recognized for CME Credits.

5. There were preconference workshops. There were 16

workshops held in different hospitals spread across

Hyderabad and Secunderabad. The workshops on

Child abuse was attended by police officers, social

workers in addition to pediatricians. The workshop on

Early Intervention Therapy for Challenged Children was

also attended by social workers, Para medical workers

involved in caring challenged children. The highlight of

workshops was hands on experience and one to one

interaction. Some workshops like the NRP workshop

and the workshop on Critical care had International

faculty. All the delegates were given C.D’s of the lectures

and also informative hand outs.

6. The conference was inaugurated by Sri.C.Rangarajan,

Chairman, Economic reforms Committee to the Prime

Minister of India. The guest of honor was Justice

B.Subhasan Reddy, Chairperson, State Human Rights

Commission, Government of Andhra Pradesh. The

highlight was the informative addresses by the Chief

Guest and Guest of honor. The inauguration was also

the witness for a breathtaking cultural programme. The

star performers of this programme were challenged

children.


7. Books on subspecialties and Parent Education were

released during the inauguration of the conference

8. Best branch awards and Fellowships of the academy

(FIAP) were awarded during the conference

9. The Scientific Deliberations of the conference were held

from 8th January, 2010 to 10th January, 2010. More

than 400 faculty members from India and Abroad

participated in the deliberations. More than 500 papers

were presented during the conference. These also

include the papers selected for poster presentations.

Gold medals were awarded to the best papers presented

in different categories of pediatrics. The highlight was

that the maximum number of Gold medals from any

state went to Andhra Pradesh.

10. The highlight of the Scientific Programme was the

Plenary Sessions. Plenary sessions were addressed by

star faculty in their respective fields. One of the plenary

sessions focused on the A.P experience of Rajiv

Arogyasri Scheme.

11. Eight concurrent session involving more than 200 topics

on pediatrics were held during all the days of the

conference.

12. There were 24 subspeciality symposia with more than

150 scientific deliberations during the conference.

13. For the first time in a National Conference Parent

Education sessions were held. They were held on all

the days of the conference. Common issues on child

health were discussed. In addition to pediatricians these

sessions were addressed by cine stars and social

workers.

14. The other first of the conference was organizing Theme

Lectures. These were public forums. In addition to

Pediatricians, Parents, Child Rights activists, Jurists,

Politicians and the representatives from the print and

visual media participated in the deliberations. These

sessions were addressed by Smt. Shanta Sinha,

Dr.Jayprakash Narayan and others. The focus of these

lectures was on child rights and the role of pediatricians

and advocates for child health.

15. The final rounds of the National Quiz for Undergraduate

and the post Graduates were held during the conference.

16. In addition to the Scientific Deliberations an extensive

Trade and Pharma exhibition was held during the

conference. More than 67 exhibitors participated in the

exhibition. Pharma companies, Vaccine Manufacturers,

Equipment manufacturers and Book Publishers

participated in the exhibition. The Exhibition was held

in Hitex Trade and Exhibition Centre.

17. The Executive Committee meeting of the Central IAP,

meeting of the office bearers of the state branches,

meeting of the subspeciality chapters and meetings with

the HOD’s of Pediatrics from medical colleges across

the country were held during the conference

18. An Orientation Course for National Trainers for the

Neonatal Resuscitation Programme was held on the

sidelines of the conference.

19. The Cultural Evenings of the conference showcased the

Traditional Andhra hospitality and The Hyderabadi

Tehzeeb.

The valedictory function was held on the 10th January, 2010.

Dr.Y.K.Amdekar was the Chief Guest. The delegates were

all in praise for the Organizing Committee. They thanked the

Organizing Committee for the excellent infrastructure and

meticulous planning.

were 7 rounds, as follows- case scenario (round I), followed

by Neonatology (round II), CVS & Intensive care(round-III),

Visual round (round IV), Neurology (round V), Respiratory

& GIT (round VI) & Rapid fire (round VII). At the end of the

The National Round of 22nd IAP Pediatric Quiz for Undergraduates was held on 10th January 2010 at 2.15 pm in the mainhall of the Hyderabad International Convention Centre at Hyderabad at the PEDICON 2010 conference. It was attended bya large number of delegates including the Head of Department and staff members of various institutions. Following werethe various zonal round winners who were participating in the National Round.

The quiz started at 2.15 pm and the participating teamsand the dignitaries occupied the dias. The proceedings werestarted by Dr. Rohit Agarwal, National UG Quiz Coordinator,Dr. Sujata Kanhere, Professor, K.J. Somaiya Medical College& Hospital, Mumbai & Jt. National UG Quiz Coordinator, Dr.Surekha Joshi, Professor & Head Nair Hospital, Mumbai &National PG Coordinator and Dr. Varsha Phadke. The quizmasters were Dr. Sujata Kanhere and Dr. Varsha Phadke.The teams were then asked to introduce themselves andthis was followed by reading of the rules of the quiz.

The score keeper was Ms. Ragendu K.and the timekeeperwas Ms. K. Archana. The score keeping was supervised byDr. Surekha Joshi and Dr. Rohit Agrawal.

There were 7 rounds, as follows - Round I, II, III and IV-were Mixed rounds, Round V was the Case Scenario round,Round VI was the Visual round and Round VII was the RapidFire round.

Guide lines for the Election Process for the Postof Editor-in-Chief of Indian Journal of PracticalPediatrics

1) The candidate should be residing at Chennai (postalcode) and should continue to be in Chennai during his/her term, if he/she gets elected as Editor-in-Chief

2) He/she should have served as member, Editorial board/Associate-Editor/Managing Editor/Executive Editor forIJPP. There should be evidence for this in the form ofdeclaration from the candidate and authorization letterfrom the Editor-in-Chief of IJPP, which are to be producedat the time of filing nomination.

3) In case of two eligible candidates, then electionprocedure is as follows

a) The call for nominations will be done through“Academy Today” in January of the year in whichthe election is due to be held

b) Nominees would be eligible IAP members fromChennai city (Postal Code)

c) Finalization of nominations should be over by April

d) Electing authority will be elected members ofExecutive Board of Central IAP for the year in whichelection is held

Traveling Fellowships Abroad

The Division of Pediatrics of the Royal Australasian Collegeof Physicians, The Malaysian Pediatric Association and theChinese Taipei Pediatric Association awards travelingfellowships ONE EACH through the APPA. The final selectionof the candidates for each fellowship will be done by therespective pediatric societies from amongst the applicationsreceived from the member societies of APPA. Only thosemembers of IAP who are young and at a relatively earlypost-residency stage of his / her carrier may apply. Thevalue of fellowships and the training period varies. Thefellowship is expected to cover traveling expenses and areasonable living allowance. The prescribed application formmay be obtained from Central IAP Office on request. Theduly completed application should be submitted along withdetailed biodata of the applicant in SEVEN COPIES to theCentral IAP Office. The applicants should give a statementin writing along with their application, duly signed by theapplicant, stating that he / she has read the rules for selectionof candidates for these traveling fellowships and that thedecision of the committee appointed by the Executive Boardof IAP with regards to selection of IAP candidates for onwardrecommendations to APPA will be accepted by him / her asfinal and binding on him / her and shall not ask for disclosureof marks of other candidate for the traveling fellowship. Traveling / Research Fellowships in India

The application on prescribed form are invited from themembers of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics for award ofTrainee Fellowships for training in pediatric subspecialties.Age No Bar. The IAP will sponsor the candidates to variousdepartments for training in India. The training shall be for a

period of 4/8 weeks. The IAP will be awarding the TraineeFellowships as follows:

The Executive Board of IAP at its meeting, chaired by IAPPresident 2010 Dr Deepak Ugra, in Hyderabad on January7th 2010 decided to decentralize IAP activities. In accordancewith this policy, The Executive Board passed a resolutionthat the permanent Office of the IAP Drug Formulary beshifted to Cochin. And therefore, as passed and minuted atthe IAP Cochin Branch Executive Committee meeting, theIAP Drug Formulary will now function from the IAP CochinBranch Office in IMA House, Ernakulam.

343 books of the 2nd hard copy edition of the formulary –IAP Drug Formulary 2009 – that was released along theOnline Desktop and PDA version at the inaugural functionof Pedicon 2010 at Hyderabad and 268 CDs of the IAPPediatric Drug Formulary were sold at the IAP Stall inHyderabad. The latest edition of the book, the Web Update2009 (4) – Edition 17 and the searchable and downloadableDesktop and PDA/mobile version contains an IAPRecommendations for Drug Therapy for Pediatric Illnessessection with contributions from 97 specialists from thevarious sub chapters of IAP concerning treatment of 560pediatric illnesses and a Drug Monograph section containingwell researched details of 620 drugs licensed for use inchildren and adolescents.

The latest book also contains a well thought out evidencebased Essential Medicines List for Children (EMLc) adaptedfor India from the WHO Model List of Essential Medicinesfor Children (2007) www.who.int/childmedicines/publications/EMLc%20(2).pdf. WHO SEARO had since theninvited IAP and IAP Drug Formulary for an InformalConsultation on Better Medicines for Children in India,SEARO, NewDelhi to discuss the shortcomings of EMLccreated for 5 states – Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, MadhyaPradesh, Orissa and Uttar Pradesh – and to explore the waysin which IAP could contribute in formulating an EMLc forIndia. Representatives from Indian Pharmacology Societyof India and Dr SuZanne Hill, Dr Kathy Holloway, Dr Lisa ABero and Dr Krisanth Weerasuriya from WHO and Mr Saul SMorris from Bill & Bellinda Gates Foundation participated.IAP was represented by Dr Panna Choudhury, Dr TanmyAmladi, Dr Shyam Kukreja and Dr. Jeeson Unni. Adherence (compliance) may be defined as “the extent to

which, the patient follows a regimen prescribed by health

care professional”.

Compliance is the base of a successful therapy. Even the

most carefully prepared prescription of appropriate

medication with accurate dose and duration will be useless

if patient co-operation is inadequate. Therefore patient

noncompliance is identified as a major hidden factor in

therapeutic failure.

The concept of compliance is difficult to apply in pediatric

field that included very special category of patients (infants

and small children’s). They entirely depend on third party

as a caretaker (mother). Here compliance of attendant is

more important, than compliance of innocent patients.

Compliance may be more difficult or achieve in pediatric

practice than any other medical field, since it involve not

only the parent efforts to follow proper instruction but some

practical matter like measuring errors, non-acceptance, taste

or spelling out of medicines. As this patient group can not

explain their complaints, poly-pharmacy may be prescribed

sometime which has drawback of frequent administration,

drug interactions and adverse events. A part form these

burdens on caretaker up to the extant of forgetfulness,

irregular schedule, expenditure of money and time are other

limitation.

Noncompliance frequently occurs when some medicine like

antimicrobial are prescribe and child may become much

better before total duration. Then parent may not feel there

is any reason to continue same medicine further, if the child

seems to be alright. Some time parents are afraid about

adverse happening in such circumstances. Compliance is

again decline in disorder where events may occur

infrequently (epilepsy) or in chronic disease where

medications are continue for prolonged period

(tuberculosis). Poor compliance is also seen in

neuropsychological disorders (cerebral palsy mental

retardation) or in certain congenital malformations.

In nutshell, good prescribing is not always enough,

“medicine will not effective, until or unless it has to be taken”.

For a successful therapeutic outcome, satisfaction of parent

is essential. Assessment of literacy and economic status of

parent is mandatory. Give precise and clear instruction along

with some demonstration, if needed. The acknowledgement

of culturally mediated health beliefs and their incorporation

into medical care plan, when appropriate may also improve

out-come. Over all, the pediatrician must spend some time

for counseling of caregiver, to clear any doubt regarding to

ongoing management. Satisfaction and faith with health

provider is best predictors of good adherence.

Nature is Natural

“Nature is natural’, It has no bad intention toward human

and distribute their wealth viz air, water, heat and cold etc.

equally to every one regardless of barrier of cast, religion

and status – ‘A Nobel relation of mother to children with full

love and affection’.

The body is made up of “punch tatva”. If we give due respect

by maintaining its natural from then nature will provide good

hygienic and non-polluted environment. Such surrounding

prepares body stronger by enhancing defensive power.

Obviously, a strong body is capable to fight in every setup.

Many diseases are self limiting because nature cures them.

The drugs are rarely necessary (Academy Today – July –

Sept 2007) Just consider impact of nature on different setup.

It a child is close to natural environment since infancy, his

body will develop capabilities of adaptation in every condition

therefore medication rarely needed. While an overprotected

child residing with modern facilities become so sensitive

that any minor deviations usually necessitate medication.

A fresh environment has positive influence on personality

and routine life. Obviously incidence of diseases e.g. air-

born, water-born temperature irregularities etc. may decline

if we make clean, hygienic and non polluted environment,

in life style. Most of the diseases are self limiting and cure

by nature. We should develop a habit to give due respect to

Dr. Anjali Bhatawdekar has written a book named“SANGOPAN” in Marathi. The book, published by AksharPrakashan, is a compilation of articles pertaining to commonproblems encountered by mothers during breastfeeding andabout dietary issues in young children. The book is availableat all major Marathi book stores.

TRUMPPS

In the year 2007 Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Gujarat StateBranch embarked on an innovative project “TRUMPPS” forthe training of untrained medical and paramedical pediatricstaff working in the private sector pediatric clinics & hospitals.Understanding the importance of the project Government ofGujarat associated themselves with this unique project. Incollaboration with the Gujarat State Government the projectwas successfully launched in September 2007 and hascontinued till date as ongoing project of IAP Gujarat. So far1200 paramedics who are working in the private sectorpediatric hospitals have been trained under this project.

A scientific paper on this paramedic training project wasselected for the poster presentation at the 8th InternationalConference of Urban Health, held at Nairobi Kenya during21st-23rd October 2009. Efforts of IAP for the improvementof child health was well appreciated by one and all. Apartfrom representatives of developing countries, even WHOrepresentatives also appreciated innovative approach.


Every year Dr. K. C. Chaudhuri Annual Oration is award to

an eminent pediatrician in India. The award consists of

Rs. 15,000 in cash and a citation. The person selected is

invited to deliver the oration on IJP Foundation Day. So far

I read recently about the sad demise of Prof. David Morley

of the Inst. of Child Health, London. He died on 2nd July

2009, at the ripe old age of eighty six years but what an

eventful life he packed into those momentous years for the

wellbeing of our children! He lived the life of a good

Samaritan, caring intensely for the welfare of the poor and

destitute young ones of this planet.

I first met him in Jan’ 69 at the UNICEF Sponsored WHO Sr.

Teachers Training Course, London-Bombay. He was in

charge, of the course. Since then, for the last four decades,

he has remained the wellspring of inspiration for me and

countless others like me who have had the privilege of

knowing him and working with him. He has had a seminal

influence on our lives.

Reticent, grim of visage, too plainly dressed, he appeared a

man difficult to talk to. But the moment you opened topics

related to the problems of children, his face would light up

and he would get deeply involved in discussing them,

demonstrating his love, determination and hope for solving

the problems of the young. During the twelve months of my

fellowship, I was amazed by the breadth of his understanding

of our problems. As you well know, he developed the Road

to Health Chart, based on his seminal work at Imesi in Africa.

The Underfives Clinic with its nutrition garden, was his brain

child, which in India subsequently morphed into Anganwadis

and Balwadis, totally bereft of the spirit and purpose with

which it was originally conceived. But that wayward mutation

is built in to our cultural D.N.A. Given half a chance, we can

reduce any thing sublime to the ridiculous in no time! He

was a staunch advocate of intermediate technology for use

in medical services and pioneered the use of field spring

balance with a hammock for sitting the child. His O.R.S.

measuring spoon was another fine example of his practical

solution to our day to day problems. He strongly advocated

the use of only essential drugs in practice. His innovative

‘Child-to-Child’ programme was a novel way of involving

the older sibling in the care of his/her younger sibling. He

wrote extensively on topics related to child health and his

‘Pediatric Priorities in the Developing World is a classic in

its own right. His establishment of ‘Teaching Aids At Low

Cost’ (TALC) in London was another example of his ardent

efforts to educate, in the developing world, teachers and

students alike, about pediatric problems at low cost. It was

at his insistence that I and my colleagues brought out the

Marathi version of John Bidulph’s “Child Health for Health

Extension Officers” and D.Werner’s ‘Where There is no

Doctor,’ both published by Govt. of Maharashtra. My

incursions into child health related activities- the Red Cross

Underfives Clinic with Road to Health Charts, Solapur Child

Welfare Trust and Science Centre, Family Planning, the

Navrange orphanage at Pandharpur, the Jhivala school for

mentally challenged in Solapur, child labour welfare activities,

the Remand home, mass immunization campaigns for

children in the city and district, training of Dais and

Anganwadi workers, the many state level Medical Education

Technology Workshops for Senior Medical Teachers, and

even the founding of Ashwini Co-operative Hospital at

Solapur, were all related to the tremendous moral and

intellectual influence he has exerted on me. Unfortunately,

most of the excellent innovations he advocated have been

washed away by the flood of technological advances that

came later, enslaving us and making us forget, in the

process, the role of intermediate technology in health for

millions of our poor country men, who are without any

medical services in their vicinity. The innate resistance to

behavioral change by these poor millions steeped in

suffocating age-old traditions has also added to their woes.

His Senior Teachers Training Course, London-Bombay, run

from mid sixties through mid seventies of the last century,


must remain even today a paradigm for such training courses

for our teachers.

The course started with getting to know your own country’s

problems which you had of course to define yourselves.

These were then discussed by the group in the presence of

Dr Morley. Then we immersed ourselves into such topics

as approach to planning in child health, cost of medical

services, audit of money spent on doctors, how to make

the most of children’s wards, making the most of libraries

and cutting costs at OPD and hematology services, We

discussed possibilities of innovations in hospital equipment

at local level. We heard exper ts on Medical Education

Technology, Statistics and Research Methodology. There

were seminars and group discussions on genetics,

immunology growth & development, nutrition, and common

infectious diseases. Of course the list is not at all complete

and does not include the many productive interactions we

had with the learned faculty. You will surely be surprised to

read the names of our faculty members, all renowned in

their own special fields at that time. Only David under the

masterly leadership of Prof Otto Wolff, the wise and

discerning Director of the Institute, could have mobilized

them — Drs. Cicely Williams, Hugh Jolly, Fred Miller, Tanner,

Paul Barnes, Bruce Chwatt, Eric Stroud, Bette Topley, of

course David himself, and many others. We all senior

Teachers who attended these training courses owe a

precious debt to the course and its directors which we shall

never be able to repay. They taught us what it means to

serve and to wait.

It is said great teachers affect eternity David was one of

them. In his quest for mitigation of human suffering, he was

in the mold of Albert Schweitzer, Florence Nightingale and

Mother Teresa. I understand David was nominated for the

Noble Prize but unfortunately the prize eluded him. I do not

know what must have been his last thoughts about the fruits

of all that he endeavored all his life to achieve for us. May

his soul rest in peace!

The eligible Fellow / Life / Ordinary Member contesting forthe post of President-Elect should have been a member ofthe Society for 10 complete years consecutively as on orbefore 1st January to be eligible to contest for the ensuingelection and should have served on the Executive Board oras Office Bearer or both for a period of 2 complete yearsbefore contesting for the post of President-Elect.

A member contesting for the membership of the ExecutiveBoard should have been a Fellow and/or Life and/or OrdinaryMember of the Society for 5 complete years consecutivelyas on or before 1st January to be eligible to contest for theensuing election. The term of the elected members to theExecutive Board shall be of a period of one year.

All eligible Fellow / Life / Ordinary members may nominate/ vote for the post of President-Elect. The eligible State Fellow/ Life / Ordinary members may nominate / vote for theirrespective State Executive Board Member(s) for the statednumber of vacancies to be filled-up.

Nominations shall be duly proposed and seconded by eligibleFellow and/or Life and/or Ordinary Members and consentedto by the candidates concerned. All the particulars containedin the Nomination form should be correctly filled up. A Formof Nomination Paper is printed herein.

The members may file as many nominations as they desire,however with payment made only once and the photo copyof the payment proof should be attached to all suchnominations. The name of the candidate should bementioned on the nomination as registered with IAP. Noother change in the name will be allowed. The nominationpapers will be scrutinized by the IAP Election Commissionto decide about its validity or otherwise. The geographicalState of the candidates will be determined as per the addressrecorded with the Central IAP as on date of notification of

IAP election. The candidates are required to give thefollowing declaration on the nomination form:

The Chief Election Commissioner shall publish on websiteand forward the list of validly nominated candidates forinformation to the contesting candidates as soon as thescrutiny of the Nomination Papers is over. Membership Privileges

Categories of Membership

(1) Student Member: Applicant who has passed M.B.B.S.

and doing Post Graduation allows the applicant to enrollhimself/herself at 50% of the prevailing rate of life

membership at the time of admission and the balance50% to be paid within 4 years or earlier. On making full

payment, he/she will be entitle to change the “Student”Membership category to either “Associate Life” or “Life”

depending on the graduation / post graduation status.

(2) Associate OR Associate Life Member: Applicant who

has passed M.B.B.S. only, have an option to becomeAnnual Member i.e. “Associate” Member (renewable

every year) OR “Associate Life” Member by paying lifemembership amount in one lumpsum.

(3) Ordinary OR Life Member: Applicant holding M.B.B.S.and Post Graduation (such as D.C.H., M.D. (Ped), D.N.B.

(Ped) or any other degree recognized by the ExecutiveBoard of IAP as equivalent) are eligible to be “Ordinary”

Member (renewable every year) OR “Life” Member bypaying life membership amount in one lumpsum.

How To Apply for Membership

Application should be made on a prescribed form. Alongwith the application for membership of IAP, photo copies of

the following documents should be submitted

(i) Photo copies of the M.B.B.S. & Post Graduation

Certificates as (as per degrees listed by you in yourapplication).

(ii) Photo copies of the degrees registration certificates withState Medical Council OR Medical Council of India (as

the case may be).

(iii) Certificate from the HOD stating that the applicant isthe bonafide student of his/her Medical College (if the

application is for “Student” Membership).

Dear delegate,

The Asia Pacific Pediatric Association has granted its

prestigious event, the Vaccinology Update 2010, to Indian

Academy of Pediatrics, and the Central IAP office has asked

IAP Mumbai and Navi Mumbai to host the event under IAP

Vision 2010. While all of us may profess to know nearly

everything there is to know about vaccines, thanks to the

various vaccine related CMEs and Symposia that are

frequently organized by IAP, and by vaccine producing

pharmaceuticals, there is always something that we still

need to learn, whether it is the basic immunology of a new

vaccine or the revised dosage schedule of an old vaccine.

Practicing pediatricians are forever looking for ‘updates’ to

their knowledge and this is exactly what the organizers of

APPA Vaccinology Update 2010 intend to do.

Through two complete days of vaccine science that will be

formatted interestingly into panel dialogues, key pad

sessions, ‘you ask, experts answer’ sessions, focused

lectures, and debates, delegates will be taken on a roller

coaster yet sedate ride through the entire field of Vaccinology,

from basics of immunology thru’ to the latest vaccines on

the anvil. In addition to renowned National faculty, we will

have several respected International faculty who will share

their knowledge with you. The concerns and queries of

delegate will be the uppermost in the conference agenda
