Welcome to 2015!

We all managed to see 90ml of rain falling on Bendigo and District over the last week reducing the fire threat and the need for the purchase of water for those out of town.

We are now back into the full swing of our Rotary commitments, starting with the first meeting for 2015 centering on presentations by Mature Members. It was very interesting to see the range and depth of views and information presented by both Max Ellis and Ron Devereaux on their views and involvement with Rotary and the Bendigo South Rotary Club over a number of decades. Congratulations to both members on their presentation that was really enjoyed by members. I was surprised at what has changed in Rotary and what hasn’t changed in Rotary. Basic core values of professional and personal development and friendship and fellowship are reasons why members enjoy and remain involved with Rotary. In addition, Rotary is a basic mechanism of connecting and understanding the community. We will have another Mature Members session in June/ July this year.

The Eppalock Fishing Classic Committee is hard at work with respect to project development and preparation. During January the website and publicity will be fully operational.

We have the Australia Day Barbeque commitment again and therefore there will be no Rotary meeting next Thursday 22nd January to allow members maximum participation.

REGISTRATIONRegistrations will be at the Bendigo Yacht Club on Friday 10th April from 4pm till 8.30pm, and again on Saturday 11th April from 6 am till 11 am sharp including already pre-paid entrants.

ENTRY FEE ENTITLEMENTSEach registered entrant will receive a meal/entry card (which must be carried at all times) for the Saturday night spitroast dinner and the Sunday BBQ lunch. On Sunday 14th December D9800 Youth Exchange Committee held its Final Briefing and Blazer Presentation Dinner for the Outbound Youth Exchange Students for 2015. The venue was International House in Parkville.  It was the final preparation event for 12 young leaders, our D9800 Outbound students and their families prior to the students' mid January departure for 12 months of Exchange as Rotary Ambassadors.  The students will participate in an educational and cultural exchange in their Host Countries.  They have been studying some basic words and phrases to assist them upon arrival in their Host Country.  All students confidently introduced themselves and spoke competently in their new language to 90 or so attendees, consisting of their families, friends, Sponsor Club representatives and the D9800 Youth Exchange Committee at this memorable Rotary annual event.  

Their Host country destinations will be Finland, Germany, Norway, Japan, Denmark, Turkey, Sweden, Brazil, Spain and France.  Much appreciation is extended to the following Sponsor Clubs for supporting and mentoring the 2015 Outbound students: the Rotary Clubs of Kyneton, Yarra Bend, Bendigo Next Generation, Footscray, Bendigo, Keilor East, Bendigo South, Glen Eira, Laverton-Point Cook, Flemington and Eaglehawk.

District Governor Murray Verso, an outstanding supporter of Rotary Youth Exchange, was the keynote speaker at the Blazer Presentation Dinner.  He spoke of the importance and great value of Rotary Youth Exchange, as a significant and much esteemed Rotary Service Program.  He went on to say that there are numerous benefits to clubs and to Host Families when hosting an Inbound student.
