INTRODUCTION
These guidelines deal with landscaping in terms of tangible design, giving the municipality a vision and design for specific sites within the CBD, e.g. Murchison Pedestrianisation and the Rail Station Public Square. They also deal with landscaping as per the
concept, communicating design intentions for the rest of the CBD. This will give the user direction as to how to landscape individual sites, so a cohesive overall landscaping vision is maintained.
OBJECTIVES
To enhance the historical and to create public open spaces, reminiscent of Victorian design, through the use of formal elements such as clipped box hedges, topiaries, formalized public circulation, treed avenues and water features.
To create an ordered green environment within the CBD, placing importance on greening as an integral part of the town.
Unify the urban fabric through the use of landscaping.
Pedestrian presence should take precedence over vehicular presence in public spaces; creating safe, communal space where the town can meet, play, entertain and informally trade.
To establish open lawns within public spaces, if space allows, with street furniture/benches as resting places.

CONCEPT
The greening concept for the town is to give emphasis to the historical through the use of formal greening elements and to give Historical/ Public Spaces an identity that is unmistakable within the urban fabric of the town. Historical/ Public Spaces are:
All buildings of historical significance.
All government buildings.
All proposed public spaces and parks.
The intention is to landscape spaces surrounding these significant buildings by using a specific planting palette, strong form and specific streetscaping elements to create sites throughout the town that have a common appearance. An emphasis on formal
Victorian design is to be considered and adhered to on all Historical/ Public Spaces. Geometry should form an important part of the design of these sites, taking into account building entrances, sight lines and circulation. These axes should form the
foundation for all formal design. Geometric shapes should be used in both the design of planting beds and paved surfaces. Patterns should be established in the paving in areas surrounding these sites, using different paving materials and geometric shapes
to produce formal paving designs. Vertical elements such as conifer species should be used to frame buildings, areas of importance and circulation routes. Hedges should be established at all formal gardens, for bordering and backdrops. Internal planting
bed spaces should be planted ‘en masse’ with flowering perennials and annuals. Water features are encouraged within these Historical/ Public Spaces, and should be designed and constructed in a fashion that adheres to formal design principles.
These Historical/ Public Spaces will form important nodes throughout the CBD, and will be linked by Regular Zones and simple streetscaping intervention. Regular Zones are to be landscaped using the same or similar plant species to those used in the
Historical/ Public Spaces, with the exclusion of specific plant species as outlined in the planting list. So as not to conflict or dilute the emphasis and distinction that should be established at the Historical/ Public Spaces, Regular Zones should make use
of more informal lines and curves taking on a more informal design approach. Indigenous plant species not listed are permitted within the regular zone. It should be noted that all plants of an invasive nature and those deemed unfit by the local parks
department, should not be considered in planning and not be used in the implementation of any greening scheme.
Ladysmith is rich in history and has a story to tell and lessons to teach. Our concept for the landscaping is to celebrate and focus on this historical value, both for the visitor and the local community. Landscaping should play an integral part in the general
streetscaping, greening the streets using trees and planters to soften current architecture and to define both vehicular and pedestrian spaces. This greening is intended link all buildings and spaces of significance, as mentioned above, and to focus views
and open views at significant places in the CBD. Refer to the figures below and on the following page.

PLANTING LIST - COMPREHENSIVE
European plant species contribute to making our historical towns what they are, so in keeping with the vision to restore and celebrate the historical nature of the town in these nodes, it is only fitting to use and reintroduce European species that are fit for
Ladysmith’s location and that pose no threat to local endemic indigenous species. Also included are indigenous species that are suitable for the design direction of the concept. Planting should be approached simply, with an emphasis on form, structure and
‘en masse’ planting. The overuse of multiple species in one area should be avoided.
Large shade trees are to line streets where possible, or to be planted in center islands i.e. greening of streets within spatial limitations. Stately trees and planting with strong form to be used in public space, visually opening these spaces and placing
emphasis on significant buildings by framing and drawing the eye to them.

REHABILITATION/ RIVER ZONE
Due to CBD’s topography and situation in a river basin, mention must be made and a potential strategy outlined for the rehabilitation and general maintenance of the stretch of the Klip River that borders the CBD. It would be advisable that a thorough
environmental survey and report be compiled to determine endemic planting and methods to rehabilitate the river bank, and combat against the effects of floods and the reintroduction of alien invader species.
Both local municipality and property owners along the river, could partner together for the establishment and maintenance of a ‘River/Heritage Walk’. This walk would be a route starting from the park at the intersection of Settlers Drive and King Street.
This route would then travel south along the river edge, finally finishing at the end of Alexandra Street on the east of the CBD. The intention is that the ‘River Walk’ would connect to the pedestrian activity within CBD, providing a space for recreation, family
activities whilst taking advantage of the beautiful natural surroundings that border the CBD.
Rehabilitation Objectives
To eradicate all alien invader species from the riverbanks and demarcated MOSS space.
To stabilise the riverbank and combat against erosion during floods.
To reinstitute endemic indigenous trees and shrubs, and to rehabilitate this green belt as a space rich with flora and fauna diversity.
To create a ‘River Walk’ along this green belt, making it accessible to the community for recreation. Picnic sites to be established along the ‘River Walk’ and intersection nodes to link pedestrian routes within the CBD to this green belt.

PARKING
A planter including a shade tree, every 6 parking bays.
20% - 30% of the total area of the allocated parking space to be demarcated for landscaping.
Planting of shade trees, shrubs and groundcovers to be planted on perimeter, and at entry and exit points of parking facilities.
Screening of vehicles, through landscaping is strongly encouraged.
HIGHLY VISUAL SITES
Care to be taken in the design of highly visual sites. Landscaping should accentuate architectural detail and design.
Landscaping should not compromise public visibility through these sites or obstruct traffic in anyway.
SAFETY AND SURVEILLANCE
The landscaping should enhance both safety and natural surveillance of a site, and should in no way limit a person’s surveillance of an adjacent property when within a site, or surveillance of the site from outside of it.
Attention should be given in design to ensure potentially unsafe areas are made safe and visible at all times.
BOUNDARIES
When landscaping of a site interfaces with any neighboring development or streetscape, it should integrate as best as possible both at design phase and implementation. A good understanding of the landscaping master plan is advised, so that
design and integration of a site with neighboring sites and the public realm can be achieved. How a developer intends to integrate their site must be shown in their design proposal.
A partnership between the government and the private sector can be achieved where a developer takes responsibility for a section of public land interfacing with their site and either agrees to implement or maintain that stretch of streetscape, in
accordance with the master plan.
GENERAL NOTES
The developer will be responsible for the maintenance of its site and any portion of street with which its site interfaces.
The developer shall request a maintenance schedule from the landscape contractor, making reference to month-to-month maintenance requirements and methodologies. It is recommended that the developer enters into a maintenance contract with
the landscaper for at least a year, in order to manicure the garden according to the initial design intentions.
Irrigation and the council of an irrigation specialist to be considered in the maintenance of a site. Grey water methods and rain water reservoirs are encouraged as environmentally friendly solutions to the water needs of a site.
