Self harm is something that most people find difficult to understand; they may even not want to know about it at all. Self harm is a destructive impulse that doesn’t seem to make sense to people who do not do it.

Both sufferes and those who care for them sometimes find it hard not to feel critical towards those self-harm, and struggle with feelings of digust about the wounds and the mess self-harm creates.

The reality, however, is that for millions of people in the UK right now, self-harm is something that they doregularly to help them release pressure and cope with feelings that are out of control. Self-harm has increased in frequency in the UK over the last ten years.

Self-harming is addictive to those who practice it, and can take the form of acts of hitting, or punching, or taking substances that cause pain or discomfort. Other forms create a visible wound, such as cutting or burning the skin. This type of self-harm is statisically the most common with around two out of three sufferes saying that they use cutting as their main method. Elsewhere, some people adopt more unnusal practices of self-harm by breaking thei bones or pulling out their hair. Some sufferers may harm specific places on their body, whilst others use anywhere that can be hidden away by clothing.

MASKING YOUR THOUGHTS

Real life accounts of people who haved self-harmed.Nina: I still remember the first time i hurt myself really clearly. It was a spring evening and about 9 months after I’d moved out of home into my own place. Life just felt as if it was getting on top me. I was crying and crying and I couldn’t stop. I felt hopeless, useles and so, so alone. I knelt on the floor, picked up my hairbrush, and hit my leg with it in sheer frustration. I was almost shocked I’d hit my-self; shocked enough to stop me crying for a bit, which was kind of a relief. But I also still hurt so much - inside, in a way I couldn’t really quite describe. So I then hit my arm as hard as i could, again and again. The more i hit my arm, the more it hurt, But it almost felt better to make the pain into something real. I kept hitting , lots of little hits by now mak-ing my arm redder and redder. Somehow it was quite satify-ing. Afterwards I felt awful about it. How could I have done that? Wasn’t that something only weird people did.
