It is great to see all our students in full school uniform and I thank parents for your efforts in supporting the school in this regard. While this is an important term for all students, it is effectively the final school term for our Year 12 students. I am confident that students who make a concerted effort this term will reap the rewards later in the year. I wish the Year 12’s and all our students the very best for a productive and successful term. Last week Mr Lilleyman (Deputy Principal) emailed parents alerting you to our concern that a number of our students are hanging around after-school in the area between Garden City and the City of Melville Offices. We take the safety of our students seriously and we work closely with Garden City Security in particular to ensure that our students behave appropriately and are an accurate reflection of the excellent young people from this school. We are concerned some students are gathering in the area outside the library, which is unsupervised and a little isolated in relation to the rest of the shopping centre. There are also some other non-school age young people hanging around in the area. The situation seems to have developed in recent weeks, and we took the view that we would prefer to be proactive in letting parents know of our concerns. We will be meeting with representatives from Garden City, the City of Melville, the Police and other schools to discuss the situation and hopefully develop some common strategies to address this situation. In the meantime, I advise parents to be aware that any large regional shopping centre will present some potential risks to young people. I am sure that parents will take whatever action you consider is necessary to ensure that your child is acting in a safe and responsible manner before and after school. The new Student Centred Funding model was released last week and we are in the process of calculating the impact on our expected funding for 2015. The new model is based on a per student funding allocation which reflects the Teese Report in terms of student need. The model essentially redirects funding from upper secondary (Years 11&12) to the early years (PP-Year 3) and from high socio-economic to low socio-economic and other factors of disadvantage. Year Per Student Funding PP-Year 3 $7,572 Year 4-6 $6,310 Year 7-10 $8,392 Year 11-12 $9,023 Some of the positives of the new model include the Year 7’s being funded the same as other lower secondary students in 2015. It was also pointed out that many of the complexities and inequities of the old model have been removed. A number of the other fears/concerns that were circulating have also proven not to be accurate. Under the new model Applecross SHS will receive a total of approximately $12,416,000 in student funding in 2015 (based on 1450 students). We will also receive $379,000 in additional funding for students with disabilities and English as a Second Language students etc. At this stage it is very difficult to provide an accurate comparison between our 2014 and 2015 funding because the new model is so different from the previous. We will continue to work with the funding model as we commence the timetabling process for 2015. As always, we will ensure that an efficient timetable is developed which provides a high quality curriculum with as wide a choice of subjects and pathways for our students as possible. Finally, a reminder that Friday August 22 is a scheduled School Development Day. Students are not required to attend school on this day, as there are no formal classes scheduled.
