SECRET SUPREME IN GERLING PREIS

The Markus Klug-trained DSCHINGIS SECRET, winner of the Italian St. Leger on his previous start, was an impressive winner of the big race in Germany this weekend, the Group 2 Gerling Preis at Cologne on Sunday.

Under Dutch rider Adrie de Vries, Dschingis Secret powered away from his five rivals in the 70,000 Euro contest for a six length victory over Sirius who repeated his runner up finish in this race last year, with Dschingis Secret’s stablemate Kasalla back in third.

MAGIC MOON IN COLOGNE SUCCESS

SILVERY MOON, arguably the most recognisable racehorse in Europe, secured his fourth career win when showing a superb turn of foot to win the Frühlingspreis der RheinEnergie class 3 handicap at Cologne on Sunday afternoon.

Despite being towards the rear of the eleven strong field for most of the 1850 metre contest, Silvery Moon benefitted from an excellent tactical move from jockey Andrasch Starke, who brought the six year old with a fine run on the far side rails to take the 6,500 Euro contest by 2 ¼ lengths from favourite Atlanta, with Marientaler the same distance back in third.

SUPER SONJA TAKES BREMEN CHASE

SONJA DAROSZEWSKI, the top lady jump jockey in Germany, once again proved her worth when steering the Christine Paraknewitz-Kalla trained TINKERS LANE to victory in the IDEE Kaffee Cup in Bremen on Thursday. Having led from the outset in the 4200 metres contest, Tinkers Lane and Daroszewski had to fend off a strong challenge from Mount Shamsan, making his German debut after switching from English trainer Gary Moore to the Weilerswist stables of Christian von der Recke. However, the pair held on by ½ length with the 14 year old Nuevo Leon back in third.

The second steeplechase at Bremen on Thursday was the IDEE Kaffee Trophy, which went the way of the Elfi Schnakenberg-trained GOOD PRINCE. Under trainer’s son Oliver Schnakenberg, the eight year old Desert Prince gelding was a comfortable eight length winner of the 3400 metre contest from Rosenkoenig, with favourite Storm of Swords back in third. ENGLISH RAIDER TIPPED FOR BERLIN SUCCESS

A maximum field of sixteen runners go to post for the big race in Germany this weekend, the Group 2 Oleander Rennen at the Hoppegarten course near Berlin, with runners from England, Denmark and Poland taking on the best staying horses in Germany.

No less than six of Sunday’s runners met in last month’s Listed Altano Rennen at Hoppegarten, with Polish-trained CACCINI faring best on that occasion, finishing second, ahead of SEISMOS (third), IRAKLION (fourth), ROCK OF ROMANCE (sixth), NIRON (eighth) and SUMMERSHINE (tenth), and although there is 400 metres further to go on Sunday, last year’s Polish Derby winner Caccini does look to be the horse to note from that race.

The aforementioned ROCK OF ROMANCE was fourth in the race last year, just a neck behind third placed BEBE CHERIE. However, both horses have been a shade disappointing recently, where APOLEON put up a career best performance when third at Hoppegarten last time out, and if staying the trip, could go well here at a big price.

Danish raider FIELDS OF ATHENRY had some smart form in England and Ireland when trained by Aidan O’Brien a couple of years ago, but has disappointed for new connections in Scandinavia since, whilst the Andreas Suborics-trainer pair of SAN SALVADOR and SON MACIA try this trip for the first time but are not certain stayers on breeding..

BE FAMOUS ran a terrific race when second at odds of 52-1 in a Listed race at Saint Cloud in March (CARPATHIAN back in sixth),whilst RED CARDINAL was second in the Group 1 Preis von Europa in Cologne last September, and should stay Sunday’s 3200 metres on breeding. NEAR ENGLAND appreciated the step up in distance when winning last year’s German St. Leger at Dortmund in impressive style, and could go close again here., .

However, English raider NEARLY CAUGHT has developed into a top class stayer, winning the Group 2 Prix Kergorlay at Deauville in August last year. Hughie Morrison’s seven year old New Approach gelding followed that up with a fine third in the Prix du Cadran at Chantilly in October, form which makes him the clear tip here.

PREDICTION: NEARLY CAUGHT - NEAR ENGLAND - CACCINI - APOLEON - RED CARDINAL - BE FAMOUS

SPANISH RIDER TIPPED FOR HOME FEGENTRI SUCCESS

The next round of the Longines Fegentri Gentlemen’s World Amateur Championships takes place at the La Zarzuela racecourse in Madrid on Sunday with the Premio Andres Ramos Covarrubias conditions race over 2200 metres. The 10,200 Euro contest has attracted a field of six runners.

Last year’s winner TEQUILA, the mount on Sunday of French jockey Thomas Guineheux, and HISPANICO, who finished fourth in that race, line up again here. However such is the quality of this year’s renewal that both Tequila and Hispanico face a tough task this time around, as does the eleven year old ARGALY, a veteran of over 100 races.

IRON STAR, the mount here of Italian rider Andrea Besana, makes his European debut on Sunday, having raced exclusively in his native Argentina so far in his career. Although the form is difficult to evaluate, there was plenty to like about his last race, getting up to win in a photo in a conditions race at the Palermo racecourse in Buenos Aires in December.

It could be said that the likeable Swedish jockey Elliot Ohgren hasn’t has the best of rides in the last couple of Fegentri races, however that all changes here when he partners the French import MYTHOMANE. A regular runner in Listed races in France last year (a second placed finish in Compiegne arguably being the best on his performances), Mythomane shaped nicely when third in Madrid last time out, giving weight to the first two in that race, and could go very well here.

However, home rider PABLO LABORDE, who took the lead in this year’s Longines Fegentri Gentlemen’s World Amateur Championships after winning the latest round of the series at Düsseldorf in Germany last month, looks set to follow that success up with victory aboard the Guillermo Arizkorreta-trained ALARAZ here. Second in one of Spain’s biggest races, the Gran Premio Nacional back in 2015, Alaraz has been performing consistently well in many top races in Spain, and although a shade disappointing when seventh in the 68,000 Euro Copa d’Oro in san Sebastian last time out, looks to be a class above his rivals here, and looks to be the one to beat.

PREDICTION: ALARAZ - MYTHOMANE - IRON STAR - TEQUILA

GERMAN RAIDER TAKES CZECH GUINEAS

FASHION QUEEN, trained in Dresden by Claudia Barsig, has won the Czech 1000 Guineas, the Jarni Cena Klisen, at the Velka Chuchle course in Prague on Sunday afternoon. Under jockey Rene Piechulek, the Santiago filly wore down Polyanta to take the Listed race by ½ length in a new course record time with Sasa a further 2 ¾ lengths back in third.

ILOIDA TAKES HISTORIC KRASNODAR HURDLE

Last Saturday marked a landmark day in the history of Krasnodar racecourse, as the Russian track re-introduced jumps racing for the first time in many years. A hurdle race, run over 1800 metres, may have only attracted a field of four runners after Gardian was declared a non-runner, however the race developed into a terrific tussle between five year old grey Klassic Li and four year old filly ILOIDA, with Iloida, winner of two of her six flat starts and like the other three runners making her jumps debut, prevailing by a length under a terrific ride from jockey Vyacheslev Koshman from Klassic Li with Fertika a distance back in third.

Krasnodar Racecourse have produced a video of all ten races on Saturday’s card which can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Yse42zRi4s

(The hurdle race was the last contest on the card, and the build up and race can be seen approximately 36:10 into the video).

FIRE TIPPED TO DELIGHT IN GROUP 1 CHASE

A small but very select field of six runners line up for the big race in Milan on Sunday, the Group 1 Premio Grande Steeple Chase di Milano

Three of the six runners met in the 4000 metre Premio Gian Giacomo Durini at Milan last month, with English import RECENTLY ACQUIRED getting the better of DOMINATO by a head with BILLY SILVER falling at the second last when still in touch. However, with neither Recently Acquired or Dominato guaranteed to get the 5000 metre distance on Sunday, Billy Silver, who was third in this very race last year, may prove to be the best of the three here.

As well as Billy Silver, legendary Czech trainer Josef Vana sends the interesting BROUGHTON to Milan. A high class hurdler when trained in England by John Ferguson, Broughton looked very impressive when winning only his second start for his new trainer in a Pisa steeplechase in December, and although the seven year old is another unproven at this distance, it should be noted that he was rated 132 during his career in England, whereas Recently Acquired only reached 98.

French raider SAMSARA has been in good form in claiming steeplechases in his homeland, however is another one unproven at the 5000 metre distance of Sunday’s contest.

However, DELIGHT MY FIRE has won over this distance on three occasions, and was disputing the lead when falling six fences from home over 6000 metres in a Cheltenham cross country race. A proven stayer who has been competing in high class cross country chases in Europe, Radim Bodlak’s seven year old mare looks to be the one to beat here.

PREDICTION: DELIGHT MY FIRE - BROUGHTON - BILLY SILVER - SAMSARA

ZOCK SET TO ROCK IN CZECH GUINEAS

Eleven colts go to post for the Velka Jarni Cena Prazske Plynarenske, the Czech 2000 Guineas, at the Velka Chuchle course in Prague on Sunday.

Five of the eleven runners met in Prague last month for the Vaclav Michal Memorial, one of the main trials for this race. On that occasion, MAMADYSH got the better of ZOCK by a neck with RIVERTON ½ length back in third, and GOLD EVASIVE and DARIEN in fourth and fifth respectively. However, Zock was giving weight to all his rivals that day, and with Helena Blaskova’s Rock of Gibraltar colt having beaten three of Sunday’s rivals in a Listed race at Most back in October, Zock looks the one to beat here.

English jockey JACK MITCHELL, who rides the Dalibor Torok-trained NOBLE CLIFFS in the Velka Jarni Cena Prazske Plynarenske, the Czech 2000 Guineas, at the Velka Chuchle course in Prague on Sunday (Photo copyright Stefanie Ihlenburg / Anglo German Racing).

Several of these have been racing in France recently. The aforementioned Mamadysh and Gold Evasive were both out of the frame in two races each in France, however ULTIMATE FIGHT was an excellent second in a decent conditions race at Fontainebleau in March, and followed that up with third place at Marseille a week later, form which gives him a big chance here. STREET SINGER has been well beaten in three small races in France this year, however although NOBLE CLIFFS was only eighth at Compiegne last time out, the form of that race looks really strong, and with English jockey Jack Mitchell travelling over especially for the ride, Dalibor Torok’s Canford Cliffs colt could be another one to watch on Sunday.

DOMINIQUE was second to Zock last time out, and although having obvious claims on form, hasn’t run since October, whilst DARIEN looks to better at sprint distances and ORSSIO takes a big step up in class, having only competed in class 3 races up to now. The field is completed by SIR SUN, third last time out, and despite another lacking a recent run, may have an each way squeak on his best form.

PREDICTION: ZOCK - ULTIMATE FIGHT - NOBLE CLIFFS - DOMINIQUE - SIR SUN
