A word from the President...

Hello everyone,

It is my great privilege to step up as President of Willum Warrain on behalf of the Board and

you, our community. With Taneisha Webster now commencing as our Executive Officer/

Women’s Business alongside Peter Aldenhoven Executive Officer/ Men’s Business, a new

era of leadership and growth is assured for our gathering place.

Term 3 has been another successful one with all our programs, Bush

Play Group, Deadly Kids, Women’s and Men’s Group flourishing and,

once again, a number of significant community events

taking place. Highlights included our Community BBQ

(which included Deadly Dogs Day Out and the opening

of our Koorie Plant Trail), a dance workshop for women

and girls with Djirri Djirri dancers, Welcome Baby to

Country (Aunty Dyan Summers and Uncle Shane

Charles from the Bunurong Land Council and CAGES Foundation) and our

inaugural Aboriginal Youth Forum (funded by Willam Buckland Foundation

and supported by the Youth Team at Mornington Peninsula Shire, VACCA’s

Youth team and local DET, KESO’s).

We are looking forward to sharing the story of our last twelve months at our Annual General

Meeting* on Saturday 12th October 10.30-12.00pm followed by a BBQ.

Hope to see you all there.

Jeanette Kaindel President– Willum Warrain

*PS. You will have received a notice of this AGM with a proposed constitutional change in this

mailout – we have grown so large with 390 Full (Aboriginal) members that it is becoming

harder to achieve a quorum of 10% so we are hoping to get endorsement for 30 to be the

new quorum requirement.

A word from the Executive Officers...

Maroomba bigi, (good day in Jandai)

The fellas enjoyed each other’s company last term with Men’s Group numbers steadily grow-

ing through the week on Tuesdays. Highlights included stone-knapping with Craig Turner

one weekend, finishing off the kids’ hut, making stone and seed pod necklaces plus our re-

cent trip to Bushranger’s Bay.

This term, we are continuing with the possum skin project and commencing the re-build of the

Men’s hut. We have commissioned an internal steel structure to provide a more permanent

design.

We have missed the hut us fellas (it was two years in the making)

but more broadly, it has left a gap in our gathering place experi-

ence for visitors. Kids of all sizes go straight to it upon arrival and

many school and community groups have sat inside it hearing sto-

ries about our mob and the importance of place to belonging.
