Board of Trustees Board of Trustees

These times are unprecedented for the system of supports and services for persons with In-tellectual/Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) in Kansas. As of February, 2014, services for persons with I/DD have been rolled into the managed care system called KanCare. We strongly advocated for our system to not be put into KanCare. But, since the change has occurred, we will work diligently to see that those persons we support continue to receive the services that were promised to them. We will be vigilant in our oversight of the system that so many worked so hard to establish. And we will continue to look for creative ways to provide opportunities for those who look to Cottonwood to assist them to live the life they choose. Our mission remains strong—to help people with disabilities shape their own future.I hope you enjoy this issue of the Contact. We thank the many people who have joined with us in supporting the lives of persons with I/DD in Douglas and Jefferson counties for over 40 years. Please enjoy this opportunity to “be in touch with all things Cottonwood!”

Gary Rexroad joined the Cottonwood Inc. Board of Trustees in March. Gary and his family have lived in Lawrence for 15 years. He works for Micro-soft during the day and he and his wife, Angie, have a start-up pet food business called “Love

Grub”. Gary has a real passion for becoming in-volved in the community—he is active in local government, the United Way, Cadre Lawrence, Chamber of Commerce and the Leadership Law-rence Advisory Board. Gary is on the Cottonwood Business Advisory Task Force and is actually us-ing Cottonwood to label and warehouse his new pet food packages. He and his wife have 5 grown children.

The Cottonwood Foundation would like to sincerely thank you for your generous gift to our 2013 Annual Fund Drive. This

year we are focusing on replacing our ancient phone system so that we can all stay “in touch” and continue to provide quality

supports and services to persons with disabilities. Your contribution ensures the success of our mission—to help people with disabilities shape their own future.

The phone system is being installed and should be up and running by early June 2014.

Day at the Capitol

6

Wednesday, March 12, was designated “Day at the Capitol” to talk with legislators about issues important to those we support with developmental disabilities. Melissa had never been to the state capitol building and she had a great time meeting the folks who represent Douglas and Jefferson Counties in the legislature and seeing all the newly finished

renovations . It was a great day!

Melissa and her mother, Sue Zupancic, will be traveling to Washington, DC in June to speak with members of our Kan-sas delegation about services for persons with I/DD and the many issues that are impacting those services. They will be attending the National Grassroots Advocacy Conference sponsored by SourceAmerica. Participants will learn individual

skills to influence how their services back home are delivered. Melissa loved her visit to Topeka—and she is eager to acquire more tools to help her be more independent and articulate her wants and needs to others.

VOLUNTEERS

Some members of Boston Financial and of the 2014 Leadership Lawrence class came to Cottonwood to work side-by-side with

persons with disabilities working on a variety of contracts. One of the class members said “I had no idea the extent of work that these folks are doing at Cottonwood. I love that every part of the work

is checked for quality!” One of the ladies from Boston Financial had such a good time she

brought lunch for everyone in Building 3!

Opportunities to shape the futureThe Cottonwood Foundation is a separate but affiliated 501 (c) (3) non –profit organization established to facilitate the contribution of funds for the benefit of Cottonwood, Inc. The Cottonwood Foundation plays a key role in providing fund-ing for the organization by helping to provide for some of the special needs of individuals served by Cottonwood, Inc.

With increased competition for limited philanthropic funds, gifts have become even more critical to helping ensure a long, healthy future for Cottonwood, Inc.

Contributions to the Cottonwood Foundation can be made in a number of ways, including cash, securities, real estate and personal property, life insurance, retirement plans, in-kind gifts, and planned gifts through a will or trust. Each contribu-tion makes a difference and helps ensure the future of Cottonwood. The Cottonwood Foundation is a charitable organiza-tion, and gifts are tax deductible.

To learn more about how you can have an impact on the lives of individuals with de-velopmental disabilities by making a donation to the Cottonwood Foundation, contact Peggy Wallert, Director of Community Relations and Development at (785) 842-0550. Some choir members share their thoughts

about the choir.

In late March, television reporter, Kevin Boughton, with Kansas First News, fea-tured a story about our Cottonwood Choir. He had heard them when he visited earlier in the year and was so impressed that he wanted to do a feature about them. Our choir has grown to approximately 40 persons. They love to sing and perform—so, if you would like an extra-special program for your civic or church

group just Peggy a call at 785-842-0550!

JobLink

Within its goal of self-sufficiency and employment, the United Way is sponsoring Cottonwood’s JobLink partnership with the Lawrence School District's Project SEARCH- specifically to help funding a full-time employment consultant working with student interns at The University of Kansas and Lawrence Me-

morial Hospital.

Project SEARCH is a one year, high school transition program which provides training and education leading to employment for students with disabilities. The program occurs on-site at a high status community business. Project SEARCH serves as a workforce alternative for students in their last year of high school. Each student applies to the program and is accepted through a Selection Committee.

Project SEARCH was developed in 1996 by Erin Riehle, then Direc-tor of the Emergency room at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medi-cal Center. She was in need of a reliable worker to stock supplies. She approached a local school district. They selected Annie Sublett, who has Downs Syndrome to work in the emergency department. Annie now works full time at Children’s Hospital 15 room Dental Clinic where she sterilizes and sorts instruments and is very suc-cessful. Due to her success and a desire to expand this opportunity, they developed a training program so that youth with disabilities would have career experiences and learn employability skills. Cin-cinnati Children’s Hospital now employs over 60 individuals with disabilities in a variety of non traditional positions as a result of this program. The program had gained regional, statewide and in-ternational attention and has been replicated throughout the United States, as well as the United Kingdom and Australia. Other industry sectors where Project SEARCH programs have been replicated are:City/County/ Federal Government - Banks - Insurance Companies - Retirement Communities - Universities/ Community Colleges.

JobLink

A.J. has worked at the Douglas Co. Appraisers office for 6 months. He does data entry. His favorite task is using the APEX system to make architectural sketches. He loves the job because of the people he works with, making money, and making sure county real estate information is correct. Advice he would like to give to other workers is to work hard. A.J. says working with his coworkers is a dream come true.

Congratulations to the JobLink Employees of the Month!

Scott has worked at Pizza Hut in Baldwin for 10 months. He cleans tables, windows, folds boxes, does dishes, and takes drinks to customers. Scott says helping the cus-tomers is his favorite task to do at work. He likes his job because of the people he works for. When asked what advice he can give about being a good employee, Scott says to be on time and work hard.

March

April

Sheryl has worked at Arterra Event Gallery for 9 months. She cleans windows, takes out the trash, stocks bathroom supplies, vacuums and cleans the VIP room. Sheryl likes get-ting the fingerprints off the mirrors and making them sparkling clean for people to use. She likes her job because the bosses are nice and it’s a safe place to work. Also, the chef talks nice to her! Sheryl’s advice about being a good employee is to stay happy and have a good attitude, be friendly to your co-workers and don’t sass your boss.

May

These Employers of the Month share their thoughts about JobLink

APRIL - Pizza Hut (6th St)Fabian says the employees always have a positive attitude and are great to work with. They are very dependable and fun to be around. He has had an employee from JobLink working at his restaurant since 1999.

MARCH - Salty IguanaLeAnn hires persons with disabilities because they usually really want a job. She likes to give them the opportunity to succeed. LeAnn has the same expectations for employees with disabilities as she does with her other employees; work hard. LeAnn likes her partnership with

JobLink so much she recently hired another person through them.

FEBRUARY - Scotch CleanersLaurie says it makes sense to work with a local group in their hiring efforts. She receives regular phone calls from JobLink to check the progress of the individual. The individuals they employ are hard working and conscientious. They have been able to meet or exceed the job requirements and therefore have been pretty

successful.

MAY - Set ‘Em Up JacksClint said their interactions with JobLink have been so positive

they keep giving opportunities to more people. JobLink has been great with staffing and training. The people they have hired are all depend-able, hard workers, who are fun to be around. They would recommend

using JobLink to other businesses- it’s a win-win situation.

JANUARY - Beauty BrandsJessica says the individual she hired has opened peo-ples eyes and educated and provided awareness. Her employee has a great attitude and never has to ask her twice to do anything. She said she is an inspiration to all. Jessica says she recommends JobLink, it will be

more beneficial than you think.

Recent Graduates

Andrew, Susan, Greg and Alison are the most recent graduates of the

Job Connect Club. The club is a joint effort between JobLink and

Cottonwood Industries to support those looking for

community employment and is partially funded through a grant with

UnitedHealthcare.

We believe that people with disabilities need to have different options avail-able to them to earn a paycheck. You have read about our JobLink commu-nity employment program. There is also a very vibrant on-site work center at Cottonwood that offers work options for people with disabilities fulfilling contracts with other businesses. Cottonwood Industries offers companies the opportunity to have their products collated, packaged, shrink-wrapped and delivered with a very high rate of quality and on-time delivery. Give our folks a try! Contact Robert Bierberle, Cottonwood Industries Busi-ness Development Manager, at 785-842-0550 or at [email protected].

RETIREMENT

Many of the retirees over age 65 had the honor of entering their original pieces in Art is Age-less at the Presbyterian Manor art show. Four of our seven entries were awarded ribbons by vote of those attending the show. Vera was awarded

first place for her print, Fanciful Flight!

Retirement Enrichment Services enjoyed a beautiful spring day on the farm. They covered their ears when they cranked up the circa 1950s bottle washer, and learned that drinking Iwig milk is good for their bodies and for the planet since the glass bottles don’t contain harmful chemicals and are reused. Iwig’s process only removes the cream fat, but keeps all of the body, texture and flavor. They have a contraption that spins the cream out. The milk is pasteurized at lower than commercial temperatures

(150 for 30 minutes) to kill the bacteria.

The low heat makes the milk more digestible. The cows eat grass and alfalfa which is aug-mented with the ‘leftovers’ from a local micro-brewery and apple orchard, so the girls get a lot of nutrients and calo-ries to make milk. The tour in-cluded a milk tasting and they

all agreed, Iwig tastes good!
