Principal’s News Congratulations to our students who participated in the Western Swimming Trials in Dubbo last week. Special mention goes to Riley Bollinger, Maisie Harrison and our Open Girls relay – Maisie Harrison, Rianna Reeves, Claire Wright and Julia Wright who have made it to the next level which, due to restrictions, has been postponed to an unknown date. Next Saturday is Harmony Day and this week our school will be acknowledging the cultural diversity of our school community at our morning assembly and through the wearing of orange on Friday this week. Mrs Porter and Mr Goh have been working with our students to promote this positive message and celebration of diversity. This Thursday is “Photo Day” and I encourage everyone to come along in full school uniform and take the opportunity to be part of our school and your Year group’s memory making moments. It is business as usual at Canowindra High School and I encourage parents and caregivers to read the included information related to COVID 19 and how under Departmental advice we are responding to this situation. Please be assured our priority is the health and safety of our students and staff. Congratulations to Beau Howell on being last week’s winner of the Canteen Voucher.

COVID-19 ADVICE As you would have heard through the media the Department, through ongoing consultation with NSW Health, has released operational guidelines for schools to follow to minimise risks for students and staff associated with the spread of COVID-19. In line with this advice, our school has implemented some proactive measures to protect our staff and students while maintaining their access to education. First and foremost Canowindra High School will remain operational unless advised otherwise. If or when school closures become the best way to manage the spread of the virus in NSW, all parents and caregivers will be informed. The information passed onto all students and staff this morning included:

If unwell with respiratory illness, you should remain at home until symptoms resolve and, where appropriate, seek advice from a medical practitioner (and call ahead first). Remember to also clean your hands thoroughly for at least 20-seconds with soap and water and cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze.

If a child becomes unwell whilst at school, parents and carers will be contacted for immediate pick-up as per normal Practice good hygiene, especially hand hygiene. All students and staff bathrooms have an adequate supply of hand

soap which will be checked daily. In addition Science labs, the school farm and TAS classrooms have handwashing facilities and protocols in place as part of regular WHS requirements.

If there is a need to cough and/or sneeze practice appropriate etiquette. Reiteration of the school’s “no touch” policy.

In terms of whole school gatherings and sporting events at this stage these will only occur on a local level. Morning assemblies will continue in an outdoor setting and Wednesday sport will continue as normal. All school excursions outside the local area, including Rural Cup, will be postponed until further notice. If there are any changes to these arrangements the school will notify parents and caregivers. The school also requests that if your child does become ill with the virus that you please seek medical advice and contact the school. I would like to assure parents and caregivers that the Department is working closely with NSW Health to ensure we have access to the latest advice on how to keep our staff and our students safe. We are following their guidance.

State Champion Canowindra High School’s Emily Thomas (Year 8) recently made it to

The National Athletics Championships for her superb hammer

throwing skills. Emily had competed in multiple athletics carnivals to

make her way to the National Championships.

Since September 2019 Emily has thrown 4 times, gaining a top 5 spot

in every competition. Her throws were as follows:

September 2019 All School - 26.19m throw, 5th Place

January 2020 Country Championships, - 31.30m throw, 1st Place

February 2020 ACT Championships - 26.30m throw, 4th Place

After placing first in the State Championships Emily secured a place to

compete in the National Championships. Unfortunately due to current

social distancing regulations the event has been cancelled.

Everyone at Canowindra High School would like to congratulate Emily

on her amazing achievement.

Harmony Day

This year, Harmony day will be celebrated in Australia on Saturday 21st March. It is a day to celebrate and promote diversity, acceptance, inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background. Our cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths and is at the heart of who we are. Some fascinating statistics about Australia's diversity:

Nearly half (49 per cent) of Australians were born overseas or have at least one parent who was

We identify with over 300 ancestries

Since 1945, more than 7.5 million people have migrated to Australia

85 per cent of Australians agree multiculturalism has been good for Australia

Apart from English, the most common languages spoken in Australia are Mandarin, Arabic, Cantonese, Vietnamese,

Italian, Greek, Tagalog/Filipino, Hindi, Spanish and Punjabi

More than 70 Indigenous languages are spoken in Australia

Canowindra High School will celebrate Harmony day on Friday 20th March. Students and staff are encouraged to wear an orange shirt on this day to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia. There will be some action in the JSMH during P2 (approx. 10am-11am). Community members are welcome to attend. The school canteen will also celebrate Harmony Week with a range of foods from various cultures available each day.
