Principal’s News

The first week of term has now passed and, despite the heat, it is great to be able to say that it was a very positive start to another school year. Our students and staff have returned eager to get on with our core business of learning, all classes are now settled and the students look fantastic in their uniforms. A big thank you to parents and carers for helping us set the standard for the year ahead. A big thank you and congratulations to our Year 7 students on a very successful start to high school. For many students this can be an anxious time and it was pleasing to see that the students settled in well and were very supportive of each other. A reminder to our new parents that if any issue does arise please feel free to contact the school as we are happy to work with you to make the next six years an enjoyable time for your child. Late last week I was informed that the new walkway should be finished within the next three weeks and, at that time, the work on the new COLA should also be well underway. This Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday the installation of our new state of the art stage lighting will happen and the new sound system should not be much later. These projects have or will cause some disruption to our timetable and I would like to thank both the students and staff who have been effected for their understanding. Last week we welcomed our new canteen manager, Cindy Walker, to the school. Cindy has hit the ground running but is excited about moving the canteen to being a full healthy canteen as is now required by the Department of Education. I have also had preliminary discussions with Cindy about working together to continue our daily breakfast program. I would like to thank Sue Townsend for helping Cindy transition into this role and our volunteers for their support and advice. I would also like to extend an invitation to any interested parents and community members who would be interested in helping out as a volunteer at our canteen, even if just for a couple of hours, to please contact P&C President Ash Wright on 0427 448480. Have a fantastic week.

Canowindra High School

Swimming Carnival 2019 Canowindra High School’s annual swimming carnival will be held on Wednesday 13th February at the Canowindra Pool. Students are to go straight to the pool as roll

marking will be held at 9.00am. Please note that for students, attendance is compulsory, as it is a “normal school day”. Bus travellers will need to exit the buses at the Primary School and walk to the pool. Non season ticket holders will be required to pay $3.20 to enter.

Students can bring their own lunch and are encouraged to bring plenty of water to drink throughout the day. For those wishing to purchase food, there will be a number of items, including hot food, ice creams, drinks and sweets, available from the pools kiosk which will be open throughout the carnival. Students are encouraged to wear house colours (Hall-blue; Gilbert-green; Gardiner-red) however NO inappropriate dress, including singlet tops, will be accepted. During all stages of the carnival it is strongly recommended that students have a hat, shirt and sunscreen on. Shade tents will be placed up and around the grass area and students may bring their own if concerned about the sun exposure. At the end of the carnival, students who catch a bus will be dismissed at 3.00pm so they can board their bus from the primary school. It is important that all other students stay until 3.24pm as this is a school day and all the normal school rules and conditions apply. We are all looking forward to a great day!

Parents and Citizens (P&C) News The Canowindra High School P & C welcomes new families, and returning families in 2019. ROLE: The role of the P & C is to promote the interests of the school by bringing parents, citizens, students and teaching staff into close co-operation, and to assist in providing facilities and equipment for the school, and as well as promoting the recreation needs and welfare of the students at school. One of the main functions of our P & C is to manage the CHS canteen ‘The Hub’. This year we welcome Cindy Walker as the new canteen manager. The canteen is currently open five days a week, and is staffed by Cindy and a band of volunteers. They serve a wide variety of fresh food and drinks, and have a range of tempting daily specials. Please support our canteen over the year. It is an ongoing challenge to remain viable while keeping prices reasonable for everyone. In 2018 the P & C donated $10,000 towards the hall curtain upgrade, funded the purchase and installation of a 2nd water cooler, purchased stickers for the bins to encourage recycling, and helped with excursion costs for extracurricular activities. The P & C has also organised the annual Canowindra Debutant Ball for Year 11 students, and The Canowindra Open Gardens Day. This year’s Deb Ball will be held the end of term 1. NEXT MEETING: The P & C meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month during school terms, new members are always welcome. The next P & C Meeting will be held on Tuesday 25th February 2019 starting at 5pm in the CHS staffroom. MEMBERS NEEDED: The AGM will be held on March 26th at 5pm in the staffroom. Many of the current committee members are resigning from their positions and after many years of involvement are not keen to be continue on the committee, so we are looking for new members so the P & C can continue its role. Without the P & C committee there will

not be a school canteen, so please think about getting involved and come to our next meeting. CONTACT: Please contact Ash Wright (P & C President) on 0427 448480 if

you have any queries about the P & C, or if you would like to volunteer

your time to help on the Committee, with fundraising, or in the Canteen.
